I honestly cant remember the last time i saw a video on youtube that was so informative and noteworthy. This guy not only seems like an incredible human being, and passionate to a fault, but this HAS TO BE the most valuable source of info on the web in (LAMENS TERMS) available to the public wanting to learn about housing anemones. Thanks bro!
Was just about to try and say the exact same thing , but you nailed it . I'm subbing and checking out your other stuff . I wish there was more content like this on TH-cam :) keep it up fella !
Really happy these videos hang around. This one is 8 years old, but I'm just now getting ready for a saltwater tank (40 gallon) and the running of this video works great for me. Specifically want a couple clowns and if course their wiggly hosts. Thanks
Thank you for such a great informative video. It has been a while since I have been in the hobby and I have forgotten how big these guys get. Thank you for taking a stand on cutting these creatures they should never be cut
not exactly correct, mine was bubbled when bought then around 5 months become fairly and last 4 month that clown hosting it become bubble again for no reason nothing changed in the tank
Thanks for sharing the story with us. I just bought one today for my tank and hopefully it will live and thrive for a very long time. All the best...Borin
Hi Melevsreef, I love your videos and they are very informational and I have similar story how I got into saltwater tank. I had 10 gallon freshwater tank and I bought few fishes from petco and fishes died and I took them back to store for credit and I started asking questions for saltwater 12 gallon bio cube they had in the store from one of the workers in that department and he said I can't keep freshwater fish alive I should not think about saltwater.. It felt bad and I kind of took that as a challenge and I started 30 gallon tank with live rock now I own 250 gallon display with 2 - 75 gallons sumps and 40 gallon frag tank and best part is that whole setup is built by me and buddy of mine with plywood..
just come across your channel via this video and boy am I glad I did.I have a 120 litre which is 26 imperial gallons nano tank with sump etc.I was thinking of getting a bubble tip anemone for my 2 existing normal clown fish to host but after seeing your video I think I better wait til I get my big 5x2x30in high tank with sump.so for now I will have to wait for my torch coral to grow and hope they host that.great video I look forward to watching more of yours as iv just subscribedpeter from London uk
Beautiful anenome tank which has actually convinced me not to add one as I am concerned about it stinging my corals. My clowns live in a large leather coral so I will live with that. Great videos.
I learned that I need to learn more about anemones, like are there any that remain small. I do not want one that will kill the coral or fish. I become too attached.
I have an unofficial rule… I don’t watch YT videos longer than 3 to 5 minutes. It has to be a topic I am really interested in to go 5 minutes. I just watched your 20+ minute video on an organism I don’t plan to have. You offered a one minute video at the end and I was like: “Yeah! Yeah!” Great video.! I am a new subscriber and hope one day to get my dream tank. I started with a ten gallon nano because I knew nothing about it and thought keeping something alive that was already thriving should be possible. I learned after buying it that you don’t start small! For several months I had the most wonderful time getting to know all the little people and their schedules. I loved each one like a family member. Then Hurricane Florence made a direct hit on my community. I had had to evacuate. No electric for five days. No generator. I knew what to expect when I came back but it didn’t make it easier. I won’t even go in that part of the house. I have been shopping for a house with the right room for the hobby. And a bodacious generator! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. M.
Thanks for the well thought-out reply. I do have some shorter videos on my channel, but most knowledge requires time to absorb information that you can then use, so the video is longer than your personal desire. You might try binging the Reef Diary series I made. Average time per episode is about 4 minutes. Or tackle the bigger topics addressed in the livestreams. Those look long, but the first portion tends to be the topic, and the latter half I spend answering audience questions from the live chat. What size is your dream tank? Good luck making that happen.
@@melevsreef I was so engrossed in the video I did not want it to end! Now I am investigating what anemones live near me on the NC coast. (I am a 30 minute drive to the ocean.) I have snorkeled in our sounds (what Northerners call “bays”) but I have never seen an anemone. I have spent many, many hours snorkeling (it’s a lifelong passion) throughout the Florida Keys, Bahamas and Caribbean. I have never seen a seahorse or octopus. It hasn’t been for lack of trying. Apparently we do have all three in NC! I grew up in Key West, FL so have seen beautiful anemones. I certainly was not expecting to find anything like that in my area! My desire for a marine aquarium comes from my longing to live in a tropical area where I can snorkel year round. Wouldn’t need an aquarium then. I literally spent the majority of my childhood in water up to my knees watching sea life. Moving from Key West was heartbreaking. Once I was able to afford it, I spent my vacations snorkeling. I no longer travel due to my health and age so a marine aquarium is as close as I will get to the tropics. My dream tank? Oh my, I am guessing 600 gallons. Fat chance of that happening! I have already purchased a 30 gallon, again before doing any homework. I know better now. It will probably serve as a support tank for corals or other sea life. I will be thrilled to have a 100 gallon. I have only scanned the titles of your other videos so far but saw there were many regarding Hawaii. My father was in the US Navy and was stationed in Oahu when I was 1 to 3.5 yo. I still remember it. That’s how we came to be in Key West. I had the life every kid should have until he died as a result of service. We then moved to NC where both of my parents were from. Thankfully, they were from a state on the ocean. I can not move more than an hour away. No matter where I have lived, there had to be water close by. 😊. The only thing I have ever seen in this area that I was tempted to collect were some sea squirts. Made me remember the sea cucumbers that were plentiful in Key West. As it turns out, there are sea squirts on every post sticking up from the sand. Once, on a very small rock jetty, on one of the Outer Banks islands, I saw a small purple and gold damsel fish. Up until that point, I honestly did not believe we have tropical reef fishes 60 feet down off of our coast. Just doesn’t seem possible! Since you love anemones you should watch a video of anemones posted on YT from South Africa. I had no idea anemones came in such colors. The video is of excellent quality as are all of his videos. I haven’t watched all of them yet but the ones from Cape Town and the Red Sea are simply unbelievable! His channel name is Life’s too Short and the video is: Kalkbay Harbour Wall Cape Town th-cam.com/video/ES-9v695jEY/w-d-xo.html. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. I truly appreciated your kindness when discussing the care and division of the anemones. (I do not think people understood why losing the creatures in my tank was so devastating to me. Some people do not place a high value on life. I got my undergraduate degree in Biology because I am the opposite. I also chose research in the pharmaceutical industry for my career, particularly in development of anti-cancer and anti-viral drugs.) I know I will learn a lot from you. Merk
The other choice is more expensive, get SCUBA certified and visit the reefs around the world. :) Glad you are enjoying some of this via my channel though.
I believe when bta is stretched instead of bubbled they're looking for food or light. if I keep mine fed well it stays bubbly when it gets hungry it seems to start stretching
Yes, please give a recap. I'm planning on creating a reef tank in about a year and I want to gain as much knowledge as possible. Knowing time frames for how things grow and change can help greatly in choosing the right species, tank size, etc. Thank you for the info sir.
I would love to see a one minute recap at the end of each video showing what is going on in one of your tanks! This was a really helpful video - TH-cam suggested it and I’m subscribed to your channel now! Thanks for the really helpful information and tips!!
Wow, something special you have there. I’m a freshie but my wife said “you can spend what you like on your ‘FISH’ hobby but at some point I’d like a marine tank with clowns and an anemone“ well my first thought was well there goes my hobby 😜 meaning I’ll never be able to do that! However this video makes it seem possible with research and solid practices. Thank you Regards Duzzy 🇦🇺
Enjoy your vids; thanks for all the info. I believe the answer to your question regarding, long and stretched v. bulbous is there is a bit too much light. They bubble, adding more surface area, to compensate for lower light and lower photosynthesis.
I like the way you think. People would say "he's one of those animal loving dude". But I'd say you're a great individual. Awesome anemone tank by the way haha!
Really informative videos. I'd like to hear personal tank updates as well. I think seeing things in action is the best way to learn and improve. Thanks
Hi I just want to say thank you for excellent videos Melev. You share your experience with everyone. This is what I love about this hobby. People helping each other. Thanks again!!! John (England UK)
I love the recaps. Its great to see what else you have. I actually especially look for updates. Its great to see how it grew from a couple of years ago.
Melev, love your videos. I used to be a saltwater aquarist back when undergravel filters was a thing. I had to quit the hobby in 2004 to be mobile. Your vids keep my hobbyist spirit alive so that I'll be ready to return to this hobby.
My clowns hosted after showing them videos on my phone. It happened over night. I propped the phone up and started a playlist. The list of videos I picked were clowns that looked like mine, hosting an anenome that looked like mine. I ran about an hour of videos. They reacted to the video. Moving away and watching. Then they showed interest in the anemone. The next day they were hosting.
Hey, almost all my bubble tip anemones keep their bubbles and I have around 40 anemones in the tank. Moderate current, moderate lighting, 10 ppm of nitrates, .1-2 phosphates, lots of fish and its mostly a softie/lps tank. 350 gallons.
I love your tanks!I think I am addicted to your channel! There is soooo much info and I have learned a Ton just from watching your videos and reading your blogs.I look forward to surfing your site!Take care, tom.
Man you take good care of your pets. That’s admirable......the whole fact of the guy giving you the facts of newbie mistakes and you proved him wrong. I bet he was happy that someone new finally nailed it! #RockOn
I added my first BTA to my 120 gal SW tank. You were just the person I needed to hear. I did not know what signs to look for when he poops. I thought maybe it was something bad, but in every other way he looks great and has a beautiful florescent green glow about him. He found a spot in a cavernous area where the water has the circulation he was looking for I guess. He can go into his cavern from the back or the front of the reef. I look forward to more of your videos.
melevsreef Just got my first White Carpet Anemone. I got it 5-22-2015 Getting a Maroon Clownfish tomorrow to go with it ... It has got really big and seems to like its spot it went from 3 inch when it came and is now 9 inchs maybe a foot around.. and everyone is telling me to take it out and put in hosp tank.. It is doing great and it is in a tank that has been up for 6 years almost .. then I have another one yelling at me that I am getting a Maroon Clownfish to go in it .. saying that it wont host in it but yet I see them in them all the time .. . Stuff like that . And telling me my Carpet Anemone is going to die.. . I have lots of things in my tank that are expert only fish and I have not lost one yet .. Love your movie will be looking to here more .. I got a rose bubble and clowns killed it that is why I am getting a carpet
Julie Kenney Maroon clownfish are hard on anemones, period. Carpet anemones aren't a good choice for that species of clown. Have you checked the compatibility charts? It's possible for an odd pairing, but I would aim for what is know to go together. Here's a good article with recommended homes. www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_3/cav3i1/Clown_anemone/Clown_anemone.htm
Hi there! I am just now starting up my first reef tank after years of success in both fresh and marine fish only setups. I stumble upon you while looking for info on my new bubble tip. Definitely subscribing....not to inflate your ego or anything, but you seem to know some stuff! Keep up the helpful and amazing work!
Great video dude and Awesome Tank! I was a bit worry with mine because Ive been staying away from them but I received a Rose BTA on a trade that couldn't resist and placed her on one of my tanks... People kept saying that if the BTA dies can kill the entire system and that worried me and also the fact that she can sting other corals. But I plan on redistributing some of the corals to give her space I think she is got the spot and the female Ocellaris has been quite curious staying in front of it.. it is small at this time so that's why I am assuming that will do fine for some time on the 65G tank, i've been feeding her with Frozen (Bryne Shrimp, Mysis and Phytoplankton) for a couple of weeks now but will go and get the Big Shrimp to slice a piece as you recommended. I am still hesitant to put her on the 100G Display, but I am impressed on how well you keep anemones on REEF Tank, I guess the Key it is as the mayor part on this hobby "Observation" and some Risks..., :D thanks a lot again for sharing, info videos like this is what encourage people to stay active on this hobby and hey off course the entire video I kept looking the background trying to get a look at the Tank, so I vote for the including of quick video updates of your display every time..
I’m a bit late to the party, but just stumbled across this video and it’s great! Thank you! I recently got my first nem and received similar negativity from a keyboard warrior. Hopefully I can be as successful as you have been and I’ll see my bta thrive!
This is a little late but I've gotta say thankyou! By far the most helpful aquarist youtuber out there! Getting a greet bta and 2 nigripe clowns in 2 days and this video definitely helps out!
melevsreef Hi,yea 100% agree with u about fragin those beautiful animals wish animal cruelty covered them!!! I work with blair animal wildlife rehabilitation ran tha reptiles and bird rooms I was tha go to guy,but Great video my friend and great info to help people whom choose to spend tha money to have these.I do have a question for u,do u have or get fertile BTA eggs that u would sale or give me???Ive been in tha water sport as I call in for 27 years, saltwater 13 years, but qhen u said about that I was like crap Ive finally found someone, been lookin for a very long time,or do u have some babies 1/2 inch to 3 inchs u want to part withwould like 3 to 4 or 1 lol if thats all u got to get rid of... but thanks and Ill sub cause ur a good person and give solid info out. blessed be...
Brilliant video. I've just got a rose bubble tip , it's been in my tank for just over 3 month now and is doing great. Very bright and a great addition. Thanks for your advise via the video. Neil
I have my black widows splitting a lot on me with very stable water parameters 😀. I started with one like 3 years back and had over 30 so far (sold some of course) I even got a nano cube to be like an overflow for anemones in my 75. I think it is because I give them strong light (400-450 par) and a specific food I feed them (proprietary and you will not find it in the reefing hobby lol). Happy reefing and happy new year.
Your obsessuon with this majestic Cnadaria is intertaining. The things that pique our intrests in life are as diverse as our personalities. Thank you for this learning experience - I have read anemonies utilize both photosynthesis and digestion? How alien and bizarre that seems, very cool as well
Yes, that is correct. They don't need to capture big meaty foods and can subsist of particulates in the water, or whatever the clownfish bring back to their 'home' - lighting also plays a role in their survival, providing a different type of nutrition.
I have the exact same sizes and quantities of those same anemones as you do in my 75 gallon reef. I started with two a few years ago. I use two T5 HO lamps on my tank. I also have two clownfish that live in them. I see bubble tips on them every once in a while when they shrink down. Our stories are very similar.
Thanks for the info! I literally just moved my first bubble tip sea anemone to a live rock. When I released it, it was in a sandy area and it was inactive for hours. Hopefully it'll show some sign of life soon. I just started my very first saltwater tank recently and I'm documenting my journey on TH-cam.
Good luck with your new acquisition. Your tank is very young, so you will have to stay on top of keeping water parameters perfect for that anemone, as well as the rest of the livestock. And make sure any powerheads you have in the tank have a foam/sponge cover to keep the anemone out of the propeller blades. Lots of people report deaths due to uncovered pump intakes.
Bubble tips loose there swelling due to lack of algae in the water. Its the water changes &/or the skimmer. They swell as they absorb free floating algae from the water. #water type pokemon master FTW
Kaul Watson I find this super hard to believe. I have five bubble tips and they are as massive as the ones in his tank. I also have a huge green hair algae problem. I've been removing it for the past year or so. There has never been a shortage of algae in my tank.
If you Bubble Tips are swollen then it is possible they have all ready taken in as much algea as thay can. If they are not swollen then your water would be very clean with no floating algea in the water for the the Bubble Tips asorb.
The tentacles stretch out and lose the bubbles when they are hungry and or don't have adequate lighting. Feed them or increase the lights and the tentacles should retract back and regain the bubble tips.
Robin Haselden I find that hard to believe. I feed mine all the time and they still remain stretched out. They even refuse food at times when they're stringy lie that. And my lighting is way more than enough for my tank.
Lies.. No one knows why they lose and form bubbles in the tips not even scientists, just a bunch of theories. I've seen them in low flow/light and high flow/light with bulbs and in pristine clean tanks and dirty tanks with and without bulbs on their tips.
Really nice tank. Love your choice of live stock & your honest sharing of your experience. I'm waiting on 6 freshwater fish to die of old age before I retool for saltwater reefing again.
Great video. I really like it when you kick back and share your experience. Very enjoyable. I love BTA's and have a few types. I noticed that some bubble tips stay smaller splitting more often while others get larger and split less. It may be genetics in some cases.
Hey Man! Cool video. I have had the same experience with Anemones than you. I wanted to drop you a line because people do actually know about bubble expression in BTAs and honestly, its pretty easy to find. Basically, the brighter the light, the more bubbles they will express while the deeper and darker, the longer and less bubbly the nem.
From my experience It's best not to feed anemones unless you are willing to do it indefinitely because they become dependent on it. Interestingly enough from what I'v experienced these BTAs like water which reasonably high nutrients. They tend to split a lot more in it. I'v got a rose and green BTA and my rose has the most amazing bubbles but my green only has bubbles on a few of its tentacles. I believe that weather or not you anemone gets bubbles on its tip is due to genetics as well as lighting and water quality. Try using LEDs or some other light that has a colour temp of about 10 to 15 thousand kelvin as well as some blue and royal blue. That brings out the best in my BTAs. Also make sure you Kh is good, that's essential. Thanks for posting the video, really enjoyed it.
Love the new tank. I have two 92 gallon corner tanks and my rbta's took over one of them. You can control them walking in a display but you do have to give them their own island with lots of space they don't seem to walk over sand and you can kinda control where they reach with flow. I started with one 6 years ago now have 8 mine tend to split when I changed bulbs each year.
Stressors seem to cause splitting, to be sure. I've seen anemones inflate and blow around like a beach ball. I love the island idea, if you have enough space to pull it off. I bet with 8 of them, that island is full now. :)
I'm setting up a saltwater 29-gallon aquarium I decide not to get an anemone after watching this video it would cost too much do you think it would be okay to get a fake anemone
Great video, very helpful and informative. i just got a small BTA, about the size of a 50p, doubled in size since i got it, about the size of a 1p coin. your BTA tank is stunning, keep up the great videos and look forward to seeing more vids of your reef.
In the small amount of time I've been enduring the hobby I've observed that high flow results in tentacles, low flow leads to bubbles. Just my own observation, nothing more.
I suppose a 1 min recap would be nice at the end of some videos, with quick mentions of any new stock added. Something that came to mind when listening to the "advice" you received years back: when it comes to any technical aspect in the hobby, it appears to me that there are many people who are all too eager to claim what can't be done, but very few who can give information on why they think that to be the case. Understanding how and why something works will go further in building ones understanding of the aquarium hobby than just being told "don't do it". Your videos do a good job of relaying helpful first hand experience.
I have got 3 different anemones, from my friends tank. In his tank, they were long tentacles. In my tank, they are stunning Bubble tips. The only thing i put it to, is hi intensity Halide lighting. I have 3 greens and 2 reds bta's. I have a video inside the reef. Check it out when you get time. Subbed. Thank you for posting your video, i enjoyed it very much.
The light source & flow has a lot to do w the tips & size of the anemone. Obviously they are happy, healthy, large & colorful so I wouldn't worry about their tips. Beautiful display!
I was totally engrossed w/ the GORGEOUS anemone next to you here....Was like listening to someone giving you important info while watching a puppy do flips in the background. Amazing how your brain quickly says "watch the puppy". LOL. Thanks for sharing this -
Oh, YES, indeed! I don't currently have any tanks set up, but have had many in the past (long story). HOWEVER, I've never been brave enough to even attempt a salt tank - Didn't want to kill everything in the tank due to some silly mistake I'd made! To be honest, what little knowledge of Anemones (ies??) I have mostly came from a "before his time" type of Science teacher & also from watching 'Finding Nemo'. Yeah, I admit it. But they totally fascinate me. I literally cringed when you mentioned that people "split" them in order to make more sales! I have to say that sounds completely horrendous! Honestly, humans never cease to amaze me w/ the repulsive things they think up to do, especially to other living creatures. While watching your video, I could see how healthy your entire reef looked....was clear the TLC you've put into it....and into maintaining it (key)! Many people may not realize that with a set-up such as yours, it must be monitored....You can't just take a vaca on a whim...You have to have a trusted person to tend to it during any absence. Even then, you just KNOW they're not doing it right! LOL.
Darn, this absolutely the goal, I love my rose bubbletip nems but I don't want them in my main tank so I'm contemplating building a nem tank just for them ❤
Anemones tend to keep their bubble tips when they are disturbed by predation (angels picking at the tips can do it) or some water quality parameters that are suboptimal. I used to cut these anemones for sale, and often after I cut, they would bubble up for a little while. As they healed, the tentacles would relax and the bubble tips went away.
I'm pretty new to a reef tank, so take anything I say with a grain of salt:) So, first of all, thanks for the video. I'm so worried that my BTA close up and spew brown mucus pretty much daily. I worry even more when it does that in the middle of broad day light. I feed the tank, I don't target feed anything. Though I may start target feeding the mandarin. I never see him eat anything. So here is my story on the BTA. When I had a 5W LED and a 50W halogen on it, it opened up. I thought it was beautiful with slightly green spaghetti looking tentacles. One day my 165W LED light arrived from amazon (I'm sure it's one of those chinese lights that these guys just happen to have stock in california). An hour after i turn this thing on at 40% power (on whites), the tips all bubbled up. It has kept those big bubbles ever since. It still deflates everyday. I'm still stressed every time I see it deflate and spewing brown mucus. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
***** The brown stringy stuff coming out of its mouth is excess zooxanthellae, more than likely. You can google that. Corals (and anemones) will do this if they have too much, OR if they are stressed... they can expel all of it to the point the subject looks bleached, but if yours still retains most of the normal color then what you are seeing is normal and okay. Zooxanthellae is a symbiotic algae that lives within the tissue of the host subject, making the anemone brown, green, or reddish. If the anemone becomes very pale or looks mostly white now, it has ejected the algae. It would need to be fed every few days until it can regrow new to replace what it got rid of. Regarding feeding mandarins, here's my article showing a method that worked great for me: melevsreef.com/node/720
yup, there is a bit of it...size of a nickle....not getting stringy....I literally increased the light by 1600%. Although it's the light level others have used, I'm going to scale way back to get the bta acclimated. It's just my observation that more light = bigger bubble tip:) Now I just need to find the right starting point and ramp it up so I don't stress this thing out too much.
Thanks for the info! I also love clownfish and anemones. I tried to put my RBTA and clownfish in a little breeder box and see what would happen. One of the clowns was in it and looks like he loved it. But, when I opened the breeder box into the tank, the clownfish both swam out and never looked back! Now, I recently bought an H. Magnifica to see if the clowns will eventually get hosted by it!
love the video as always. The two dwarf eels are looking as cute as ever. Just wanted to weigh in on the recap. I personally don't like recaps all that much. I would rather leave that time for more info. These videos are usually so short (even a 30 min video is really just a small look into someone's week) that I don't think it's needed at the end of the video. But again, great video sharing your experience with nems...I love mine and hope I never lose it. So far so good at 8 years of owning the same one. I look forward to your next videos.
Thanks Dave. 30-60 seconds to recap anything is tough. I tried it in this week's video. Have to really stay on topic - which is tough for a conversational person like myself. ;)
Great video. I haven't had good luck with BTA. I've tried twice. Both have turned white. They didn't look alive, but they didn't look dead and they would retract into the rock work when I tried to remove them. In regards to a recap at the end of your videos... That's a great idea!
When an anemone bleaches out, it's either water quality or lighting, but usually lighting. Either too much light for too longer per day, or not nearly enough to sustain the symbiotic zooxanthellae within. What size tank was it in, under what lighting?
Great video! Sadly I've lost two anemonies. The first one lasted about six months, the second about nine. My maroon clown goes orgasmic almost as soon as I put them in the tank. I look at your tank and think WOW, that's a lot of flow, but now I'm thinking that the reason I lost my previous two is because of low flow in my tank. I'm going to step up the flow, and use your tank as a visual guide to set mine up. Thank you!! I think a recap would be great.
+c h Sorry to hear about the anemone losses. Maroon clownfish are hard on them, seriously. I would be sure you get a big one so the clown can't overwhelm it.
How funny that this is todays topic. I just got a $100 ticket in the mail today, for a RBTA that I picked up (purchased) from a fellow reefer last week! It's so beautiful that even with the ticket I consider myself lucky to have her. By the way, I vote--recap!!
Thanks bro!
oonauq Thank you for the very nice words, they are appreciated.
Was just about to try and say the exact same thing , but you nailed it . I'm subbing and checking out your other stuff . I wish there was more content like this on TH-cam :) keep it up fella !
Reach down by the changing elements band. People like you who decide to have passion are what this new song I wrote is about
oonauq I have to agree good vibe comes from this guy seems like a cool dude 👍

Really happy these videos hang around. This one is 8 years old, but I'm just now getting ready for a saltwater tank (40 gallon) and the running of this video works great for me. Specifically want a couple clowns and if course their wiggly hosts. Thanks
2020 and still one of my top 3 favorite species only tank!! Just love the BTA action going on in there.
One of the best anemone related videos on TH-cam in 2023
This is the best most in-depth TH-cam video on anenomes that I have ever seen. Thanks Marc!
Thank you for such a great informative video. It has been a while since I have been in the hobby and I have forgotten how big these guys get. Thank you for taking a stand on cutting these creatures they should never be cut
The bubbles go away because of flow.. high flow stretches the tentacles, low flow will keep them bubbly 👍🏼
not exactly correct, mine was bubbled when bought then around 5 months become fairly and last 4 month that clown hosting it become bubble again for no reason nothing changed in the tank
I can attest to this theory, I ramped up a powerhead 1k gph and my BTA lost its bulbs and when I lowered the flow to 750 gph it regained its bulbs.
Ive had same experience with my nems
This makes total sense. If the flow is low, they inflate (bubbles) to help keep their tentacles up and flowing.
I’m going to try I think this is true
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
just come across your channel via this video and boy am I glad I did.I have a 120 litre which is 26 imperial gallons nano tank with sump etc.I was thinking of getting a bubble tip anemone for my 2 existing normal clown fish to host but after seeing your video I think I better wait til I get my big 5x2x30in high tank with sump.so for now I will have to wait for my torch coral to grow and hope they host that.great video I look forward to watching more of yours as iv just subscribedpeter from London uk
Merk
The "basics" he says. I don't think moon light triggered BTA spawning is a basic. Super informative. Amazing channel! Keep 'em comin
I'm pretty sure I never needed to know this, this hobby is amazing but beyond my comfort and patience levels but I still love to be an observer
Thank you
Regards Duzzy 🇦🇺
I just bought my first red bubble tip annemoe I’m so very excited to watch it grow your video was helpful
How is it now
Ya update
Enjoy your vids; thanks for all the info. I believe the answer to your question regarding, long and stretched v. bulbous is there is a bit too much light. They bubble, adding more surface area, to compensate for lower light and lower photosynthesis.
One minute recap sounds nice. It'll keep us updated on how your reef is doing!
I like the way you think. People would say "he's one of those animal loving dude".
But I'd say you're a great individual.
Awesome anemone tank by the way haha!
Vo Zi You'd be right! :)
Really informative videos. I'd like to hear personal tank updates as well. I think seeing things in action is the best way to learn and improve. Thanks
Hi
I just want to say thank you for excellent videos Melev. You share your experience with everyone. This is what I love about this hobby. People helping each other. Thanks again!!! John (England UK)
Thank you for the nice comment. You're welcome.
Andreu Ahn No more UGF any more, we've moved past that stage a long time ago. ;)
Or the difference in light during the night scared them to the point of hosting😖😑
theboxmodder are you serious
That’s fantastic!!
I’m literally about to try this. I will let everyone know. I’m curious as fuck honestly.
Hmmm???
Hey, almost all my bubble tip anemones keep their bubbles and I have around 40 anemones in the tank. Moderate current, moderate lighting, 10 ppm of nitrates, .1-2 phosphates, lots of fish and its mostly a softie/lps tank. 350 gallons.
I love your tanks!I think I am addicted to your channel! There is soooo much info and I have learned a Ton just from watching your videos and reading your blogs.I look forward to surfing your site!Take care, tom.
Thanks Tom. Lots of information on melevsreef.com and reefaddicts.com
Man you take good care of your pets. That’s admirable......the whole fact of the guy giving you the facts of newbie mistakes and you proved him wrong. I bet he was happy that someone new finally nailed it! #RockOn
You’re a very smart guy! I love your information.
I'm brand new to the hobby and getting my first bta in two days. I can't wait!! Thank you for your vid!
What a beautiful display, and so much great information
I added my first BTA to my 120 gal SW tank. You were just the person I needed to hear. I did not know what signs to look for when he poops. I thought maybe it was something bad, but in every other way he looks great and has a beautiful florescent green glow about him. He found a spot in a cavernous area where the water has the circulation he was looking for I guess. He can go into his cavern from the back or the front of the reef. I look forward to more of your videos.
Thanks Cathy.
OMG you are so right already going through this right now with people with my carpet anemones. Love you saying what I am feeling
Julie Kenney Which part specifically? I said a lot. lol
melevsreef
Just got my first White Carpet Anemone.
I got it 5-22-2015
Getting a Maroon Clownfish tomorrow to go with it ...
Hi Heath. Lots of helpful videos on my channel, hope they help answer your many questions. :)
Interesting that they sting you. I handle mine without any type of sting being felt or evident. Cool video, I love the anemones.
I did that with my BTA too, till one day I handled my Condy.. It wrapped around my fingers and kept stinging till I blistered. Never say never lol
+Ashley L Fair enough!
Well 9 years later, I’m enjoying all of this information because I’m about to get an anemone for the first time!
This is a little late but I've gotta say thankyou! By far the most helpful aquarist youtuber out there! Getting a greet bta and 2 nigripe clowns in 2 days and this video definitely helps out!
+FishNerd2000 Congrats on the new acquisitions. :)
Haha, Thanks!
melevsreef Hi,yea 100% agree with u about fragin those beautiful animals wish animal cruelty covered them!!!
Neil
neil bryan Congrats Neil! I'm glad it's doing well, and appreciate you taking the time to write a few words to me. :)
Sharing is caring! I just got a BW
Loved this video! I am starting a Clown Harem Tank (I am documenting it on youtube) and this information was amazing!
Whenever I feed my anemones, they will change from strings form to bubble tIps the next day.
I've noticed that too but not next day..withing minutes after it finishes and opens back up the bubbles start forming.
The best BTA /clownfish tank I have seen on YT!
I'm hoping to add these to my new build... people are strange everywhere.
Kaul Watson
I find this super hard to believe.
I'm waiting on 6 freshwater fish to die of old age before I retool for saltwater reefing again.
lol - that's funny... and I like your plan.
im so glad ive found your channel. thanks man!
Great video. I really like it when you kick back and share your experience. Very enjoyable. I love BTA's and have a few types. I noticed that some bubble tips stay smaller splitting more often while others get larger and split less. It may be genetics in some cases.
I'd love to know the real reason. We need some science to find out. :)
just going by experience with bta, I found they tend to lose their bubbles under strong flow
I am an educator, and you sound like one as well. Wonderful presentation! Thank you for all info.
+Omer Hadzic Thank you very much.
Good to see a video that isn't just ego driven. Great vid.
Hey Man! Cool video. I have had the same experience with Anemones than you. I wanted to drop you a line because people do actually know about bubble expression in BTAs and honestly, its pretty easy to find. Basically, the brighter the light, the more bubbles they will express while the deeper and darker, the longer and less bubbly the nem.
I can definitely go for more videos like this on anenomes. Maybe a video on general care of anenomes or something? Killer tank!
+mike splatterblast More to come, I promise. :)
Have ofcourse seen the anemonetank alot before but my god it is gorgeous.
Enjoy your vids keep them up :)
And now i watched it fully, i vote for quick recap of the reef, aslong as you also keep a "next week is about..." :)
I would just get something else that is alive, maybe in the LPS coral family.
Thank you this was helpful
i subscribed
Great video, very helpful and informative. i just got a small BTA, about the size of a 50p, doubled in size since i got it, about the size of a 1p coin. your BTA tank is stunning, keep up the great videos and look forward to seeing more vids of your reef.
In the small amount of time I've been enduring the hobby I've observed that high flow results in tentacles, low flow leads to bubbles. Just my own observation, nothing more.
does your high flow time include more volume going thru the filter?
ie do you think more algae is in the water during low flow periods?
I suppose a 1 min recap would be nice at the end of some videos, with quick mentions of any new stock added.
Something that came to mind when listening to the "advice" you received years back: when it comes to any technical aspect in the hobby, it appears to me that there are many people who are all too eager to claim what can't be done, but very few who can give information on why they think that to be the case. Understanding how and why something works will go further in building ones understanding of the aquarium hobby than just being told "don't do it". Your videos do a good job of relaying helpful first hand experience.
+billforigno Thank you! That's good to hear because I really do try to provide helpful information anyone can apply to their own hobby experience.
Is that an eel in there too?
It looks like a dwarf golden moray to me
Melev you are a legend, thank you for sharing everything and creating such a great community 🙏
Happy to help others, and I'm glad you find it useful. :)
wow, very informative! BIG HELP! post some more please!
Bravo on the beautiful anemone tank. Your specimens look so incredibly healthy and vibrant.
+Justin Srisuk Thanks. Here's a current picture. melevsreef.com/pics/15/12/fisheye_60g.jpg
+Garry Thomas i want to see your video,
I do to. We want to see!
Garry Thomas I have 7 Rbta and all of them are bubbly under my Radion led. Go figure
Upload away. Instructions plus a visual for when I get to that point is always helpful
t5 lighting :) works mint for explosive bubble tips
It’s so much fun to sit and watch a reef tank. I had an arrow crab years ago that was the star of the tank plus it was a Bristol worm eating machine.
Going have to buy one have some worms need to get rid of
I think a 30 sec recap would be cool. I ended up fragging a nem, blame it on BRS. Lol, but once I started, I had to finish. Nice name for your NEM
30 seconds is impossible. lol I talk too much. But I tried in the latest video. ;)
Back again after all these years! Still a great video
I wish I could have such a beautiful anemone
The light source & flow has a lot to do w the tips & size of the anemone. Obviously they are happy, healthy, large & colorful so I wouldn't worry about their tips. Beautiful display!
Yes on the recaps.
I was totally engrossed w/ the GORGEOUS anemone next to you here....Was like listening to someone giving you important info while watching a puppy do flips in the background. Amazing how your brain quickly says "watch the puppy". LOL. Thanks for sharing this -
hehehe - so living creatures are quite interesting, I get it. ;)
LOL.
DO A VIDEO, ON A BEGINNER TANK
I’ve done some over the years. I think some are still on my channel.
Thanks for sharing .. I'm actually setting up a 40 g tank just for anemones !! Another thing u look great!! A lot younger and very builded .
:) When I got my hair cut recently, I told the woman she better do a good job because I have a TH-cam channel. lol
She did a great job ! Ur arms look nice too
Crap, I might sell my bta after watching this video, cus it's in a 29 and I'm afraid it'll get too big... :(
+orangutran I had mine in a 29g for several years, but yes they can take a lot of space. It's a good reason to upgrade. :)
If it ever gets to take up too much space I'll take him XD
Darn, this absolutely the goal, I love my rose bubbletip nems but I don't want them in my main tank so I'm contemplating building a nem tank just for them ❤
+Hawra Dhanerawala This is a 60g aquarium.
That means 24*24*24 inches in dimensions
+Hawra Dhanerawala Yes, 24" x 24" x 24" is correct.
+melevsreef
Sorry but I'm theiving your concept and idea. And building similar anemone tank. :)
+Hawra Dhanerawala Have fun! :)
+melevsreef
Thx melev
Ill keep you updated
I watched this video about 5 times and just love it. I’m confused about the difference types. I like these flowing long tentacles types.
beautiful!
I think a 1 minute recap would be pretty cool
I'm pretty new to a reef tank, so take anything I say with a grain of salt:)
So, first of all, thanks for the video.
Nice tank, and nice video.
Thank you.
Awesome video... Never been a RBTA fan but very informative! Keep up the with the quality videos!
You have to much direct flow, you only need a slight flow, with a slight flow they will stay in bubble form.
Looks like to me he knows exactly what he is doing, They look healthy to me :)

+Ron Atienza Clowns can be goofy like that.
Wow, this is so mesmerizing.....
love the video as always.
Have to really stay on topic - which is tough for a conversational person like myself. ;)
That tank in the background looks like the one in my living room, it's awesome
Love the purple tang
Nice! I love my reef.
Booo on that ticket! But I've gotten tickets in the past as well, and it was aquarium-related naturally. lol
