So had to get a shot in my knee so watching winter driving videos. For a nail biter check out Riding Shotgun " Nice easy drive over the Rockies NOT" start at the 30 min mark or so. That's how I'm spending my afternoon, while Alice trucks east maybe.
You for letting me travel along with your adventures, but I caught two things in this video, first the loops of your cross members on your chains need to be on the outside (doesn't dig into your tires this way), second me last job of 18 years had us running across the Blue Mountains in OR a lot had 35mph chained up thanks again for the ride a long
So glad Y'all made it home safely. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone putting chains on. It's quite an ordeal. Alice I agree 💯 with you. And Martin. It's like people are blind to what's going on right in front of them. People not getting over is a huge problem. And a sad one.
When I was trucking over Donners my biggest worry was picking up pieces of broken chain and getting flat tires. One trip from Verdi to the west end of restrictions I had 3 tires loosing air due to broken chain links. I almost thought it was better to wait a day or several hours so someone else could gather up the loose links for me.
Oh my gosh. I couldn’t watch your videos going up the mountain I would watch then close my eyes. I got nausea from watching. I was on my edge of my chair. I was so worried about you two. Be safe out there.
Lol yeah I use to have a pair of 3 railers, once I realized Donner doesn’t care they went in the corner of the shop. They are a pain to put on sometimes.
Martin for 4 years I ran from Reno to the Bay Area every night so I understand what you are saying about chaining up. I you are very right about the speed when running chains.
Martin..... isn't that the coolest feeling blowing those train horns in the tunnel!!!! I used to love that when I could!! Truck em easy guys... Stack em n pack em .... Benji's that is!! Sh#t storms a comin
Pelosi did the honorable thing and stepped down. Step in the right direction 😂 It is I’m a very immature person if you ask my wife so I do stupid s#it all the time. 😂
Good morning, only other outfit I watch that puts chains on is RIDING SHOTGUN and we just get to see the chains on. Pretty hard to film and chain at the same time. All we get to hear is the hum. Thanks for the video. Never heard of drag chains until I watched his videos. Only in CA. So. You start another week, be safe. SEE YA
I think Colorado makes you throw trailer chains on too, I’m not 100% sure though I’ll have to check. Yes sir we’re east bound and down! Have a good day Jack and don’t work to hard.
Woke up in snow here ! first snow and it looks like a mini snowstorm with the wind but it s not cold it s not blowing i=on the ground it s sticky snow ! it has Started ! the winter just got here ! 🥶
That was a nice trip. I can't believe that while you were doing 25 MPH with chains a FedEx guy blew by you like you were standing still. Kike some others mentioned it's good to see both of you made it home safely. Fancy got you through now give him a good bath. BTW they are calling for up to 6 feet of snow in Buffalo NY. Next time you see Phil and Paul bring them some blankets. I'm sure they must get cold out there. LOL Love you guys and stay safe.
6 feet???? Dang!! They get all the lake effect snow there. FedEx drivers don’t care, fedex gives them free chains and his contractor will replace the tires or the fenders he rips off.
@@TruckingTogether yes they had lake effect snow. I-90 was shut down. The cops just hearded trucks in to the rest stops. They had no place to go. Packed in like sardines. Mutha Trucker Alex posted that somme drivers were put out of service.
Just throwing this out. I carry about 8. 2x4 about one foot long. I pull up on them on the inside duals. This makes it so I can wrap the chains completely around the tire with out rolling onto the chains. I only run singles I’m not a fan of the 3 rail chains.
Hey Martin, nice to see you got those cam locks down tight. I ran over hwy 88 from Carson City Nv to San Andreas Ca for 3 years with my transfer truck n trailer. When that pass would close we would use hwy 50 through Tahoe to Placerville and down 49 to San Andreas to the cement plant there. Always maxed on weight at 79,900 or better. Had numerous times of huge iceballs ripping the wiring out on the trailer lights, not to mention all the stuff broken cross links would tear up! Had to dump alcohol in the brake lines to the trailer every trip or the brake lines and air tanks would freeze up and not work at all. It was a real struggle to make a living driving in the snow country. As soon as the 4 wheelers hit snow, they would roll the window down a couple of inches and throw their license out cause you don't need a license to drive in the snow right? Lots of fun running around in the Sierra mountains!!!
As some one who runs 88 quite a bit out of San Andreas/Jackson (we live in the next town over from San Andreas) in the winter time I tip my hat to you sir. That road is sketchy enough with 80k on dry pavement.
You are 100% correct that other drivers & a big majority of 4 wheeler drivers don't give a crap. They forget who brings every single thing we use . Be safe
I’m a retired firefighter and now Motorsports truckie. Worked that pass for 30 years. Thank you for respecting the mountain. That pass is cursed. You can’t be careful enough. Shame on those lazy stupid drivers who go all the way up to the control point and then park!
Oh they’re terrible for doing that! Thanks!they almost had the whole road blocked climbing out of truckee. I’m surprised CHP wasn’t out there ticketing them. Yea agreed on the mountain definitely being cursed, for not being nowhere near as high as colorado they sure get their snow.
Best thing that was instituted was the GRAPEVINE, it is either open or closed. No chains on the GRAPEVINE. Cannot cite how many trucks, lives or accidents it has saved. The only bad side is the delay factor. This day and age, it is okay to slow down a bit.
I won’t park, missing out on to much money and home time doing that. I mean there’s a time and a place for everything I guess but I’ve yet to sit on Donner unless the highway is closed.
@Trucking Together I understand but with hazmat material I rather be safe than sorry . Plus wife and myself just like taking it easy our kids are grown . Besafe guys maybe run into yall soon .
Close drivers are a hazard for sure, we had a crew working on a state highway cleaning manholes with a vac truck yesterday. They got in the truck and a semi was so close it took off the mirror. We even had temporary traffic control barricades.
Hi Alice and Martin I'm glad that you made it back home safe. Some Driver's out there really don't know how to put chains on. I was driving with a team member who said that he has been driving for 30 years. But he didn't know how to put chains on. So I put them on. There was another trucking company in front of us. He was from Texas. He had his chains on backwards. So I showed him how they go on. I also told him that he needed a drag chain on his trailer. Now this is really the funny part. He put the chain on the D.O.T. bumper in the back. I also told him that he needed to tighten his chains with a tool. He brought out a wrench. They need to know how to put chains on before they get on the road.
Fancy had a rough work week getting that dirty. Glad you guys had a safe trip. The lack of courtesy/ respect people have for other when they are on the side of the road . It's one of my pet peeves. Stay safe the next go around.
ok over here on the east cost its not needed like out west and if you need more than that its time to take a break until they get things cleaned up glad to see you guys out there and most importantly being safe God bless keep up tje good work
In regards to your remark about people just driving by . I used to walk my dog and when I crossed streets I would almost get hit by cars all the time because people simply don’t care ! I had 1 dipstick tell me to hurry up when I was in a crosswalk and walking with crutches !
4 years ago I screwed up big time on Donner pass. There was a big storm that dumped 5’ of snow and high winds. It was on my first run with a company out of Utah to Modesto. Chained the tractor & trailer up. Road was closed at the big pull over in Truckee. So rather than go back to Boomtown or Reno, I went a couple of exits back. Then parked on an on ramp heading west. Stayed the rest of the day & all night. Got my hours back at 3am, went to leave. Snow was almost to the top step on the truck. Cop came by, gave me a lecture. Luckily, a Caltrans motor grader came by 30 minutes later, plowed the ramp around my truck. Then pushed me out. This Silt Colorado mountain boy got schooled on Donner pass snow !! It really dumps up there !!
Yeah! Winter definitely is rearing it’s ugly head early down there for you guys! I remember last year we didn’t even worry about it much yet and this year it’s been every week for the last month.
CalTrans can be ridiculous about chaining up. I can understand when they want the big trucks to chop up the ice with their chains, it helps with snow and ice removal, but when they want you to drive long distances on wet roads, that's nuts. It also creates a severe safety concern, the chains get eaten up and fall apart. You can see busted-up chain links all over I 80 and those broken links cause flat tires. It's a safety hazard and sometimes it is only because the "chain checkers" don't want to move their checkpoint down the highway 5 miles.
I don’t know if you guys got a pressure washer at home or not but if you do, you should check out Chem-X touchless wash, I use it in between scrub washes it does a really good job at keeping the truck looking its best, he has a TH-cam channel if you just type it in and you can check it out
Gather they didn't want a surprise snow dump, or road freezing, to block the highway. Someone who has the Sand contract is very happy - wow, that is a lot of sand on the truck.
Alice tell Martin he needs to polish his chains 😉and he’ll everyone uses chains in the rain 🙈🤫😂😂😎Rickster 👍 y’all keep on 🤠🤠 I blew my horn in a pretty long underpass coming out of Dallas and cardboard boxes went flying from the top of the underpass 🙈 woke up all the homeless people up there sleeping there life’s away 😔😎😎Rickster
Which apps do you use for your truck routing, checking wind and chain requirements? I need help, lol I’m going to actually start using technology. I would really appreciate it. As always great video. You two and Schmitt are the only ones I watch
This is what I use for Wyoming www.wyoroad.info/pls/Browse/WRR.STATIC5?SelectedDistrict=1 for ca I use the CARR app, Utah I use the Utah DOT app, Colorado maps.cotrip.org/event/COSEG-242739/@-104.96803,40.32335,9?show=roadWork,winterDriving,roadReports,chainLaws and use MyRadar radar app for current conditions, as far as winds and stuff I just google the hourly weather for cities.
just wondering where do you guys keep your chains since your are always swapping out trailers and do you have enough chains for your drives plus the trailer or just the outside trailer tires
We carry six total chains in the tool box between the fuel tank and drive axles on the driver side. Six singles is enough for any situation out here on the highways.
I 100% agree on that steer, fix the problem and put a new set of steers on and if you're that tight throw them old steers on a trailer. And you know he doesn't do a proper pre-trip because every one of those lug nuts had streaks and weren't tight. Alice I agree that there's a lot of driver's that don't know what they're doing and if the state is worried about it then maybe they shouldn't have given them a license. They should've been pulling over and ticketing driver's that didn't slow down and move over instead of babysitting making sure that everyone had chains, after they hand out some high dollar tickets maybe people would move over! Too many people are killed because of others laziness of not moving over!
The absolute disregard for folks on the shoulder is definitely getting worse..i wish law enforcement would crackdown more on this to send a msg to knock it off and move over.
I agree! I think they have enforcement at times, seen a 4 wheeler not move over for a state trooper and he left his catch and went after him. Just needs to happen more often.
i was watching you guys fit the snow chains, and i do apologise, but all i could think of was how would the owner of the hell cat deal with this case scenario i will answer that for you all, this means WORK, and trucking knowledge. he has not got it and never will have it lazy lazy lazy i am not digging him out, i am just making comparisons
Lazy people parking on the road like that are a big time safety hazard. I've seen lately on Snoqualmie I-90 the troopers are ticketing those that are parking in the chain areas and just chillin waiting for chains to be lifted.
I'm taking Lumber to Sparks Nevada Reno. I'd get to the summit change is quiet pull up and chain area them guys get off and be staring like crazy 15 minutes later. Did put the sign on no chains I went all the way across her doing that. Passing the charter bus going down coming into Nevada do a donut. Cuz he got a little bit too hard on the brakes. I just want to run kept going. Got to where I was going untart my load unloaded. Wanted the 76 Truck Stop and stayed there for a day or two. Because of pass was closed Going Back to Cali.. yeah don't back home. Had to get back to Northern Cal. To hook up the set of doubles with 3x of the gold whole turkey from Oregon down to Turlock Butterball. In the winter . It was a joke. Yeah I'll take it and be safe.🙋🏽♂️😊😎.
There is no more people that really care out there if them come to close to you when your on the side of the. Road. Common decency is gone out the window. Our society is getting worse everyday. Our world is headed in the wrong direction. You can tell Martin knows what he’s doing when it comes to chaining up. A lot of drivers don’t have a clue. I remember once having to chain up in Northern Quebec on the ice roads. The other driver was not thinking and tried to go up an ice hill to slow. I was so pissed off as it was so cold out. We got chained up and got up over the hill. Chaining up is part of trucking , it’s like part of eating you got to do the dishes afterwards. Great video showing better to give in and chain up from the get go. All those drivers actually parked on at he highway should have been given a good stuff fine. I know the stated called for chains to early on this one but the law is the law. I don’t get it guys with chains just a movin down the line. Well Alice and Snow Bunny, another great video, have a great and a safe day, happy trails, 🐇
So ALL those trucks were pulled over and restricting all but one lane on I-80 prior to Donner because they didn't have chains? WTF? And I thought drivers in MN winter were morons!
AGREED PPL ARE JUST IGNORANT ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COME TO courtesy of the road I think a lot of these people got their driver's license out of Cracker Jacks box.
To properly blast your train horns in a tunnel you must follow proper train etiquette with two Longs followed by a short😆 Do you guys know that you can look at live camera's on Donner (when they are working) Any camera that has a + can be viewed live cwwp2.dot.ca.gov/vm/map.htm One more thing 22 years as a tow truck operator I can honestly say that working on the side of the freeway hooking up a car doing a recovery it absolutely sucks trucks don't move over people don't move over and the only thing between me and them is a white line and I did this in all kinds of weather I feel you it makes me cringe to watch you guys on the side of the road because I've been there done that it's one of those things in life that scared the 💩 out of me Lost a few friends that way Stay safe
Yes sir Lee. Always check the cameras on Donner when it’s snowing, I always move over. If I can’t I’ll slow way down but it’s just new breed of people and drivers…… just don’t care.
“He’s going pretty fast for his chains”. Gotta love two day free shipping. I am glad to see that you two take the time to be safe and compliant!
Now those two are professional drivers----Kudos to you Martin and Alice---THE DYNAMIC DUO!!!!! Good job keeping the greasy side down!!!!
Safe travels trucking
Great video Martin and Alice
I can totally relate to 'rude' drivers, both 4 wheel and semi. What can it hurt to SLOW down and/or move left. One of my most pet peeves.
Yep, new breed of foreign drivers. They just don’t care.
You guys are truly professional but when working outside in these conditions you and Martin should have a HIVIS fluorescent vest and gloves to help improve your visibility, flashers help folks see the truck but the Safety equipment helps protect you.

Yes, I’ve had that happen in the past. Got lucky this time. They break off because people drive 40+mph on dry road.
Had it happen over cabbage to myself and another truck. I had half a link in my drive the other truck had the other half. Matched up.
I had a whole link go through a almost brand new Bridgestone M726EL back in the day, ruined the tire. That was a bad day.
Hi kids!! Great video!! Thanks for putting the time in so we can ride along and be part of your family!! Have a good weekend
Martin- I can't believe how easily you chained up. It was a false alarm but still a pain. Be safe.......JM
Practice makes perfect lol. When you get good you can have the truck chained in 30 minutes. Thanks James stay safe.
Winter winter, no chicken dinner , enjoy cleaning that truck. Good video. Other drivers are unpredictable and dangerous
I enjoyed it being clean for one whole day 🙄 it’s filthy again! Hit all that snow in Denver today.

Some states post "move over or slow down for stopped vehicles"
I think majority of the states have that law now, but no one listens.
Martin that looks like a giant pain in the ass. I’ve never ran where we had to.
Not really, the chaining is the easy part. Dealing with everyone on the road is what sucks. That’s why I choose to do it at night.
That makes perfect sense Martin
4 years ago I screwed up big time on Donner pass. There was a big storm that dumped 5’ of snow and high winds.
It was on my first run with a company out of Utah to Modesto.

Yeah when that snow gets bad it dumps! They’re not to bad out there though, the caltrans boys are always willing to give a push.
Chain up with those road conditions ridiculous basically on wet pavement
Yep. That’s California for ya.
Massachusetts has the move over law. It doesn't get enforced. I've been out there changing flats and the staties zoom past just inches from you.
Yep because they have to start enforcing it. Then people will learn.

See when Colorado has chain laws it's no joke but that right there is just more like black ice I could say
There was no ice at all.
Gather they didn't want a surprise snow dump, or road freezing, to block the highway. Someone who has the Sand contract is very happy - wow, that is a lot of sand on the truck.
Could have built my own dune tract to go 4 wheeling 😂😂
Alice tell Martin he needs to polish his chains 😉and he’ll everyone uses chains in the rain 🙈🤫😂😂😎Rickster 👍 y’all keep on 🤠🤠 I blew my horn in a pretty long underpass coming out of Dallas and cardboard boxes went flying from the top of the underpass 🙈 woke up all the homeless people up there sleeping there life’s away 😔😎😎Rickster
😂😂😂😂
Fancy is dirty.
Fancy was so disgusting it’s like he was a little piggy. Took a while to get him cleaned up at home but he’s shinning now.
@@TruckingTogether That's one Awesome W 9
Hello Hey Hi and Howdy my Heroes..... ✌️ 💚 & 18 Wheels
Hey Al!
@@TruckingTogether I'll be watchin for yuns in Denver... Im starting a new job.. Gonna run Dedicated to Denver outta Dalton Ga..
Lol keep your eyes peeled
Wow lazy people can’t believe that Be careful out there 💪🏻☮️🙏🏻❤️👍
Will do. Thanks Skippy.
I'm just here to improve the algorithm
Excellent job Driver enjoyed the video looked mostly just wet by the video probably some black ice as well. Thanks for sharing
No ice, tiny bit of slush and mostly wet roads. Thank you!
A few cinders on the road?
Cinders? As in grit? Yes lots
How long does it take you to chain up?
that took about 30 minutes
Don't understand why Donner gets all the headlines...what about Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Blitzer and Rudolph? 😉
😂😂😂😂
@@TruckingTogether I really appreciate it
You need walkie-talkie for chaining
How many wheels are required to be chained up?
Minimum on Donner is 2 wheels on tractor and 2 on trailer. Maximum is 4 on tractor and 2 trailer.
I worked for a company who got free test tires they would refuse to change them I no longer work there as I have no desire to be a test tire driver.
just wondering where do you guys keep your chains since your are always swapping out trailers and do you have enough chains for your drives plus the trailer or just the outside trailer tires
We carry six total chains in the tool box between the fuel tank and drive axles on the driver side. Six singles is enough for any situation out here on the highways.
Do they not allow snow socks
They do, but I feel they suck. Get it? Lol. They don’t do much for traction when it gets bad from research.
That steer was so bad it belonged in a dumpster, I wouldn’t put that on a trailer even. I hear ya on the peoples laziness Clyde!
👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Question why don't Alice have a key to Fancy Hawk???
Alice does
@@TruckingTogether ok. We see you always use yours. That's wht I ask. Glad y'all made it home safely 😊😊😊
i was watching you guys fit the snow chains, and i do apologise, but all i could think of was
how would the owner of the hell cat deal with this case scenario
i will answer that for you all,
this means WORK, and trucking knowledge.
he has not got it and never will have it
lazy lazy lazy
i am not digging him out,
i am just making comparisons
He would make a TH-cam video “teaching” how to do it without actually doing it to make money off of 😂
Lazy people parking on the road like that are a big time safety hazard.
That’s quite the run chief!
You forgot to tell everyone about the chain monkey's people that will chain you for money
They were MIA that night.
Yeah I hope chp was out there later writing tickets. This was the aftermath to a storm.
1/2 of the drivers r new r from other countries,an getting worst
I’d say more than half Robert, they just don’t get it.
So ALL those trucks were pulled over and restricting all but one lane on I-80 prior to Donner because they didn't have chains? WTF? And I thought drivers in MN winter were morons!
Oh no! These guys here are the worst lol! Yes they probably had chains just didn’t wanna use them.
Does Alice come up out of the bunk and yell at you for waking her up when you blow the train horns in the tunnel lol
Alice was filming that scene
AGREED PPL ARE JUST IGNORANT ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COME TO courtesy of the road I think a lot of these people got their driver's license out of Cracker Jacks box.
I say that on almost a daily basis when we’re home driving around our little town.
To properly blast your train horns in a tunnel you must follow proper train etiquette with two Longs followed by a short😆
Do you guys know that you can look at live camera's on Donner (when they are working)
Any camera that has a + can be viewed live
cwwp2.dot.ca.gov/vm/map.htm
One more thing 22 years as a tow truck operator I can honestly say that working on the side of the freeway hooking up a car doing a recovery it absolutely sucks trucks don't move over people don't move over and the only thing between me and them is a white line and I did this in all kinds of weather I feel you it makes me cringe to watch you guys on the side of the road because I've been there done that it's one of those things in life that scared the 💩 out of me
Lost a few friends that way
Stay safe
Yes sir Lee. Always check the cameras on Donner when it’s snowing, I always move over. If I can’t I’ll slow way down but it’s just new breed of people and drivers…… just don’t care.
This is my 19th winter running 48 and never put chains lol ran many many years without chains in the box too. I hate hauling chain weight around!
You’re missing out lol. It’s a experience every driver should go through in my opinion.
