    Thanks to you I understood that I can't connect a Korg Volca to an Arturia MicroBrute because of this simple, yet very well hidden detail. THANK YOU! This saved me hours and perhaps days of struggling!

      Update: actually everyone seems to be connecting them, not via 5-pin MIDI, but via sync out/gate in (with a patch cable). I think I didn‘t say that I‘d like to SYNC their clock, which seems to be a different thing because no 5-pin MIDI cable is needed. (I thought I do need one, though, because I‘m yet a greenhorn.) Thanks anyway, your video was one of the puzzle tiles to finding the solution!

      Exactly - there's a move away from using DIN with manufacturers now. So the 3.5mm jacks are the way they're going. The best situation is if they all use the Type-A wiring setup. I recently purchased an Akai Force which also uses the 3.5mm MIDI connectors - so this is getting very popular.
      By the way: I did 3 prototypes with this set of videos - I personally liked the box version the most: th-cam.com/video/WdGZm1qFMZo/w-d-xo.html
      Retrokits do a nice little workaround with this also.

    TRS type a to midi are like gold dust in the UK for some reason. I have had to order mine from Germany. Thanks for this video. I will definitely be making a couple of these 😁

    Hi ranzee. I just bought a midi din cable with a trs on the other end of the cable. Is it possible to sync the alesis sr16 drum machine via its midi with the TD3? The TD3 has trs sync in input. Because i noticed a bit of latency when syncing the sr16 with the TD3 via midi only on both machines. Thanks

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sync port on the TD3 is a control voltage (CV) sync type connection which usually takes a PPQN 2 pulse wave. The cable in this video is to use with MIDI (digital) connectivity - there are many devices now that ship with a TRS MIDI style connection. The TD3 already has a MIDI DIN connection. Confusing I know - but they're both two different connection types completely.

    Ask what type of cable is used to build a homemade midi cable? or what is the type of cable called? could the canon XRL cable work? or some other? Since 3 of the 5 pins are used?

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any cable - preferrably stranded wire - low DC voltage only required.

    • @ranzee

      You might find the TRS output on your drums is not MIDI? Doublecheck first, then come back to me :)

    would it be possible to get a stereo mini jack cable and just cut and cross it to make A TO B without a switch?

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kinda yes (you'd have to know the wire colors) BTW: That was my first prototype - I ended up making 3 different versions. I think the 3rd one was the best as I did a box and you can just use existing TRS and MIDI DIN cables with it - check it out here: th-cam.com/video/WdGZm1qFMZo/w-d-xo.html

      @ranzee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Markus, check out the followup videos - this worked at the time - it was a prototype - the better version is on this video: th-cam.com/video/WdGZm1qFMZo/w-d-xo.html AND may I also be so bold and suggest you check out the Retrokits version: www.retrokits.com/shop/rk-minimidi/ (tell them Ranzee sent you!)

  • @stefanie_m466
    @stefanie_m466 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    about the cable, ring and tip must be twisted wire and sleeve must be a shielded mesh around it?

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi stefaan, you can do that - it is only 3 wires needed - so you can use an old 3.5mm audio cable like I did in the 2nd video of the series. The best solution is the 3rd video - where you just wire up in a little box and use existing cables.
