  • 🐝 In this video, I explain how to use the Varro heat map.
🐝 Varroa are on the march in NSW & spreading rapidly, aided by beekeeper movements.
🐝 It is really important that you go out & inspect your bees for the presence of Varroa
🐝 Varroa is notifiable in New South Wales, and you must notify the DPI if you detect it in your hives.

I am in SE QLD and far from smug in relation to the varroa situation. Thankful that my alcohol washes have been negative at this time and planning how as an amateur beekeeper I will incorporate IPM into my beekeeping not if but when they arrive. 🐝

Good to hear you are on the ball LIndsay. IPM will be a key strategy particularly at the recreational level.

I'm in Central Victoria and I wish it was warm enough to check my 3 backyard hives. The thought of having to wait for another month or more for the weather to get back above 15°c is frustrating. I know the next almond season will spread the mites throughout Victoria.

The advantage you have at the moment is brood production is low & low mite reproduction follows. Yes I think almonds will definitely introduce Varroa into Vic.

Thanks for showing us this. Is there any restrictions against beekeepers bringing hives to Almond pollination if they know they have mites? Or can you more hives around nsw with no restrictions?

The only obligation around Varroa is to notify when you find them & to manage the infestation. There are no movement restrictions within NSW, so yes, a beekeeper who knowingly has mites could move them to the almonds. Not sure about border restrictions into Vic or SA
