Yeah, never thought about that, but it makes sense. The way Warlocks are always described is that they’re a 1-to-1 match against a Sharlin (ignoring the fact that there are only 50 Warlocks and thousands of Sharlins).
The Sharlin was made to form a Phalanx against Shadow Battlecrabs. That's what the front main beam is for, it's a pike. The Sharlin has less survivability then EA ships once you bypass the targeting disruptor. EA interceptor grids and EA Nova, Omega, Warlock and others were exceedingly powerful. Minbari War leaders knew to stay away from earth ships, carving them up at long range. They called the Novas 'hammer' in their language and actually respected them. Unfortunately there were to few Nova class Dreadnoughts to make up for their severely limited effective weapons range. Overall the Sharlin is a great ship, lacking in point defense, but the latest Warlock designs were already competitive.
Yes, in the few occasions that the Novas survived enough time to get near the minbari ships they were able to inflict severe damage. The real problem with the alliance was that there's really no way to protect effectively against the minbari beams weapons...the magnetic shielding of earth alliance ships can deal with charged particle beam but are useless agains neutrons...the situation is even worse considering that those are antimatter neutrons.
Later the mimbari came up with the shargoti. And the war class had their own versions of the white star then there was the svoid seekers whose ships we're even more powerful.
"See you in hell!" **BOOM!!** Yeah, an epic scene we all remember. The Sharlin is real nightmare. Those neutron beams are deadly. There's a quick scene in Babylon 5 that displays the Sharlin's full weapons layout for a few seconds. EM guns, neutron guns, neutron beams, and tractor beams. I forgot what episode it's in, but thinks it's the one where a Sharlin attacks a renegade Sharlin near the end.
I always thought it was rather odd that no one really seemed to develop any sort of energy shielding technology (deflector shields) not even the Vorlons or the Shadows. The only ships that possessed that sort of technology seemed to be the thirdspace vessels.
The Vorlons did have some capacity to do this. In the episode where Sheridan persuades Kosh and the Vorlons to engage the shadows a shawdow vessel fires its pink beam directly at the Vorlon dreadnaught. The 4 forward facing tenticals create and energy disruption that nullifies the Shadow beam. However while this is clearly depicted in this one instance, its never show again or referenced. Look at the 35 second mark in the linked video. th-cam.com/video/WR2nXCjvs0s/w-d-xo.html
@Mike Vasquez Energy shields are a high tier technology in Babylon 5. The Earth alliance has a very basic type o shield too, based on magnetic fields. The ships hull posses lots of emitters that create a grid of magnetic field. That mitigate the effects of plasma bolts and particle weapons since both are compose of charged particles. Unfortunately that does not work agains minbari weapons since they are base on particle beams of neutrons and anti neutrons. The Minbari have gravitic shields that basicaly use gravity fields to warp space near the hull of a ship. That also mitigate the effect of weapons in the ships hull. In the battle the Vorlon dreadnought was clealy protected by an energy shield. th-cam.com/video/6b8rVy9_MCM/w-d-xo.html The best example was the gate built by the vorlons, in the movie Thridspace. That gate was protected by a very powerfull energy shield. th-cam.com/video/F0A8xgn6r88/w-d-xo.html
@@RenBR I see what you mean, but the shielding shown on the Vorlon dreadnought and thirdspace gate seemed like outliers. I'm talking about a full on deflector shield(ray, em, particle, gravitic, the works a cohesive shield bubble per se). Such a thing should have been well within the capabilities of the Shadows, Vorlons, Mimbari and maybe even the Centauri.
Don't mean to nitpick, but should have noted that the minbari have been suspected of incorporating organic based tech into their constructs which would explain some of the design features of this and other ships in their fleet.
In the TV show they speculate that the minbari may have bio tech on there ships..but...the only minbari ship that we know have bio tech is the White Star since they have Vorlon bio-armor.
Pax Deorum fact that the minbari were able to readily incorporate the vorlon tech may lend more credence to this suspicion. The minbari probably already had the necessary infrastructure already in place.
Too bad ...the series got axed for good . For all intent and purposes ...this is most realistic ( closest atleast ) to the reality scifi series i ever blessed to watch . I wish it was could be remastered in Blue-ray DVD quality so we could appreciates more on the finer detail of B5 universe .
I don't think JMS has any plans to remaster it. I don't know why. The fans would buy it up in a heart beat. I know I would love to see it all again in stunning Blu-Ray quality, even the ending scene with the station... well, you know. Break my heart all over again why don't they?
Daniel Parkison in short ?? Money or greed ...between B5 and startrek based series who were in broader fans based ... You know the rest ... It was never about the originality or in story depth or sounded vision ....it all goes to ...
Oh, I know. Star Trek has the wider fan base. It's older, and thus more established. Personally I'd love to see Deep Space Nine remastered as well. But Star Trek has its problems now. The new movies aren't up to par with the older ones. They're more sci-fi action flicks rather than actual Star Trek. They'll pack full a cinema house, but us older Trekkies will shake our heads. Star Trek: Discovery is heretical. Star Trek: Enterprise had huge amounts of promise in Seasons Three and Four, but by then the damage had been done and they were being canceled. I'd love to see a return of it with a fifth season, but alas, I don't see that happening. Star Trek Axanar, the fan-made film had huge, and I mean HUGE, promise until the lawyers got involved. Too bad. That was actually Star Trek and promised to be better than what was being made by the big money production houses. Maybe that's why they got sued.
As i said before ...it was never about the originality or vision or in depth story ... Never ... !! And JMS's hands were tied on this...he would only get a shot in a wider screen but , let be honest here ...who's going to financed it ??
Unless some mass fan-based crowd sourcing comes through I don't see anybody throwing that kind of cash at a remastering project for B5. But even if all the B5 fans in the world come together to crowd source it I don't think they can raise the capital necessary to make such a project a reality. It's a pipe dream at best.
I love that concluding statement about how the measure of any vessel's capabilities is to simply match it against a Sharlin!
Yeah, never thought about that, but it makes sense. The way Warlocks are always described is that they’re a 1-to-1 match against a Sharlin (ignoring the fact that there are only 50 Warlocks and thousands of Sharlins).
Just surviving a battle against this is a victory.
Keep it coming, these are awesome.
That one and the Vorlon ships were always my favorites on the show. Well done.
Looks like a fish. A very, very, very, very mean fish.

QuantumNova
Pretty sure it's anti neutron according to tech manual
James Jordan, you're correct. I thought so but I wasn't sure.
These antimatter neutrons are produced by the Quantum Singularity reactor.

@@lengthyounarther oh yeah. I remember that. It was more like active armor than a dedicated shield though. Still, it was cool.

When you have energy dissipating armour, you don't really need a shield because the armour is accomplishing the same thing.

I didn't know they were that well armed and had 30' of armor.

I don't care, the content is good and i just happy that someone is showing some love for babylon 5. I love this show.
