Tiny Collages & Collage Paper Sorting

  • I've been talking about re-sorting my collage scraps for weeks, so I finally did it... and then spent some time using the tiniest scraps in tiny collages on paint chips. It was fun to use such a small scale and resulted in unexpected compositions. This exercise can be used on its own as a collage warm up, a way to try out new combinations of colors/patterns, as an art journal page, and/or as a mixed media painting starter.
    Materials used: paint chips, collage paper & gloss medium.

    i have a huge box of scraps i'm working through right now to make tiny collages, so when i saw you had a video about them that I'd missed, I wanted to watch! (sidenote: i'll take your scraps you throw out hahaha.) actually, what would be super fun is like if a bunch of us collage artists got together and started sharing our 'i hate these' scraps with each other to see what they'd make when recontextualized in someone else's work or with someone else's paperstash they already have. i guess some artists already do this with happy mail, but i feel like that's usually papers people like - i want everyone's refuse hahaha - i get a good feeling from turning something that would have gone to the trash into something aesthetically pleasing or artistically meaningful to myself
    I love these collages being on paint samples! What a great use for them. I have some squirreled away from when we painted the bathroom that I should dig out. I've also considered using house paint. I'd love to get a second garage studio set up where i could do large scale paintings with house paint. Maybe eventually. :)

      I love the idea of a community collage scrap swap - other people always have fascinating scraps, don’t they? Do you think it’s because we each tend to gather collage papers from the same sources again and again, so other people’s scraps feel exotic and exciting? 🤩 I’ve thought about house paint too - it’s the storage part that gets me. I’m sure it’d be easy to work around, but I can’t see to wrap my mind around it. YET. 😆

    FYI: House paint comes in sample sizes - about 4 bucks a jar. Nice wide openings (like Nova paints) and a gazillion colors. Sometimes Lowe’s has them at 50% off!!

    Oh you’re not alone, I am a paper hoarder too lol. I feel so much better knowing you’re out there doing the same types of storage and sorting attempts with tiny scraps and with the same levels of moderate success. 😂😂 So I too just start gluing them down and adding paint and marks and stuff. Soooo much fun. There must be hundreds of thousands of us out there😊

    I use paint chips all the time. Remember you can get paint small samples for around $5 in any color. I use them for painting mats for my prints and photos. Also, paint stirrers are free, if you need wood for anything.

    Just a word of caution about the latex house paint. I made the mistake to pour the jar with my brushes with the paint down the kitchen sink...honeyyy it cost me $500 to unclog my drain. Had to call the plumber. Latex sticks together but I thought it was like acrylic paint. Nope. Be careful please. I love your paint chip art. Beautiful!

The flowers are multi media practiced, and the reverse side became additional swatch pages for new or old tools, so now ii have dual sided flowers and the fussy remainders...which ii then glued into my real swatch book in blank spaces as 'tiny collages'...and then you show up with this confirmation....

For example, perhaps your main computer volume is up high, but your volume on TH-cam is very low? 🤞

  • @karinea3982
    @karinea3982 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Jackie! I've got am almost idententical system of storing my paper scraps! I also try to sort black and white scraps separately... But you know, sometimes that huge pile of papers that tend to fly all over my room (I've got no dedicated sudio, unfortunately) makes me anxious, I have no energy to sort it or to dig into it, and then I just say to myself - oh well, today I'll do something else because I can't deal with this mess. How do you deal with such situation as I am sure you face it too, from time to time.

    • @jackieschomburgart
      @jackieschomburgart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, I deal with it basically every day 😂😂😂 - the chaos/mess anyway. I’m thankful to have a dedicated space for my art, but collage materials have a way of spreading out to (over)fill any space. Sooner or later, I end up shoving the scraps into bins without sorting them and then once a year (or two…) I’ll re-sort them like I did here. All I know is that it’s worth the chaos in the end. Good for you for carving out space to make art - keep showing up! ❤️❤️❤️
