I did this as soon as you did this episode, saw a Flysky 35mHz for £9 new, bought the FrSky telemetry screen add on. Soldered it all in with a 3 pos switch, so I can still use the 35mHz receiver, FrSky and middle is no transmitter so the battery lasts longer when used with Computer simulator. Works perfect with ms Swift 2. Thanks Guys
I have the DIY in my JR 2610 and 9303 , the have given flawless operation for over 18 months , some of the meets have had over 100 pilots and this sytem held up well and was better than Spektrum dsm2 .
I just gotta say I love these videos that you do. They put great information into the most entertaining format possible. Hobby King was smart to sponsor you, you basically have me sold on those simple delta wing planes, and I built my own bomb drop today.
When are you guys or David upload a video on how to actually do it? I have a very old Kraft and a very old Futaba that I would love to modify to 2.4Ghz PLEASE PLEASE!!
I just switched my old Hi-Tec Flash Five, and it was totally easy. Three solders on to the trainer board, and instant hack! Just tested it on my DLG today...easy peasy lemon squeasy.
Something you might want to mention is that some of the 2.4 ghz moduals don't come with a range test function where the power of the modual can be reduced. Some flying events etc. won't allow you to fly with a modual that cannot be range checked.
It's true that I miss a lot of what you're saying because of the distraction of the music, but I don't think you said anything about the available range with any transmitter / receiver pair. I know that a lot of people can mentally "tune out" the music - but I just can't.
Putting the switch that allows going between 72MHz and 2.4GHz in such an exposed location on the Futaba T7CHP transmitter seems risky. Bump that switch while in flight and you will lose control of your aircraft. I made this conversion on the same model Futaba using the Corona CT8Z DIY module and used a recessed slide switch, much like the power switch, installed on the back of the unit. No possibility of an accident. For people that think leaving both the 72MHz and 2.4GHz transmitters on at the same time, consider that you may forget to warn others that are still using 72MHz and shoot down their aircraft unintentionally. Also, operating both transmitters will drain the battery faster.
@simio1337 They did not really switch to 72Mhz. This was just to stop the 2.4 module from transmitting. With the switch at 72MHz position, the 2.4 receiver would not get any signal. As soon as they switch back, the 2.4 module would reboot, and reconnect. Some other 2.4 systems are pretty slow to re-bind. The FrSky is one of the best 2.4 systems available.... for the ones interested in modding your 9X transmitter.... do a google on ER9X firmware
I've been using the FrSky module for my JR XP8103 for several months now. I gotta say, it works great! Although I still have no idea how it's pronounced...
When my dad bought his 2.4ghz DSX9 he had his old 9XII (same thing just 36mhz version) I was lucky enough to get it off him and throw a spektrum module in it, however $220 later and its a bit late to be looking at the cheaper Frksy stuff... oh well, im happy. :)
I have exactly the same Futaba T7 CAP and I want to upgrade to 2.4 Ghz , and at the same time keep also old functionality of old radio . The video is great , but how what kind of kit , how to install , , any instruction ??? Any details , where to buy it, installed ????
I have the same Tx, and would love to do this upgrade, however these units aren't available in the US only thru Hobbyking in Hong Kong, don't want to wait, any other options?
I have this radio (without throttle ratchet) and I love it more than my dx8. I just ordered the hack module because the old futaba keeps going as the dx8 craps out
Ahaha I understand what he was saying at 4:30 - he was saying that its so simple to solder red to red black to black etc yet so many people muck it up and solder negative to positive and blow out their systems...
Hey guys, I can't find the tutorial or the step-by-step video mentioned in the description, am I missing it? I have an old 6CH, JR Circus Series 72.550MHz that I would like to convert over instead of just throwing it away. It was my father's from years ago. Thanks fellas.
ever get around to range check? I picked up the basic module to convert a very old 4 ch tx similar to that single stick tx, figured retro would be interesting to try...
So all you need to do is to cut the wire that goes in to de turnigy 9x module and just plug the frsky module in? Whats the difference between V1 and V2?
Why does that wire need to be cut? I have a Futaba 9CHP, if I get the module, do I have to cut anything? I don't need to solder either right? It's just a module you plug in.
Bought a futaba t7c a while ago, before i know what i know today. Is there any workaround the channel3 failsafe only.Or do i have to buy another RC radio for fpv. Ty for your uploads.
Hello I added a switch to have 2.4 and also stock 72mhz module options in my FUTABA 7CAP radio. Frsky works perfect I think, but now wanted to try some old models in 72Mhz, and servos jitters and range is crap!!!! what can I do to correct my problems? what should i pay attention to (soldering, routing cables, the frsky is located inside the radio underneath the stock 72mhz module) thanks in advance!
It looks like the Frsky DIY upgrade is no longer available. is there another substitute ? I would like to upgrade my old radio to 2.4ghz as its almost brand new !
Hello I have a few little rc cars that I got going again and I’m tired of the crystals and short range but I want to keep the radio’s because they are high quality and match my cars could someone please help me figure this out it’s for the pro pulse 1/18 race cars
Wow, I knew the ban on 72 was coming but I never paid much attention. Guess it sucks for all those AMA and club members out there. Don't get me wrong I fly 2.4 Spek and Futaba, however I also fly my 72MHz (have for over 20 yrs) on my larger balsa models and always will. 72 is more reliable. Every plane I have lost that was not pilot error was caused by 2.4 Spektrum/JR crap radio systems. Brown outs causing a reboot=crash, Thanks 2.4. Versus a glitch on 72 and your back instantly. Thanks but no.
make a video discosing how to choos a corect engine for a acroatical trainer or a worburd plane how to choos the ESC and the batery and servo for the control surfises this wood help every scrach builder like me and every who wants to upgrade their plane
Well I am thinking of getting the that 9 channel frysky flysky what ever it is through nitroplanes I guess since the hobby king Turnigy is always out. Same radio correct? Just different firmware from what I have read. You seem to like it like many others. If there is any info that I should know maybe between the nitroplanes version and Turnigy and you have time please stop by my page. 20 year pilot here and I fly 72, and 2.4. I can tell you know your stuff by thinking the same as I. Thanks wilco
Can someone tell me if the Futaba 4YF 2.4GHz -NOT the FM one- remote has a nice range? (At least 600 ft) I don't know anything about remotes, so if all 2.4 remotes have like a mile, then I'm sorry. :P Just on the side, if it isn't a good remote, what is a 4 channel one for $100 or less? Thanks.
That switch - it's a bad idea. It can be switched accidentally during flight, or loose contact over time. Having less switches in RC and power circuits is always better and SAFER
krum4o55555 there is no difference in futaba to airtronics its still connects the same power .ground an ppm connection an your done .. Use the corona dig kit
I did this as soon as you did this episode, saw a Flysky 35mHz for £9 new, bought the FrSky telemetry screen add on. the nostalgia hits hard
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Unfortunately the camera man did a bad recording. He was supposed to focus on the transmitter and not the talking.
@keek1997 The plane only had the 2.4ghz RX. We were just switching it off, and then back on to check the re-link time.
I have the DIY in my JR 2610 and 9303 , the have given flawless operation for over 18 months , some of the meets have had over 100 pilots and this sytem held up well and was better than Spektrum dsm2 .

I will never fly anything other than Frsky stuff... The tx modules and receivers made by them are the best Ive ever had.

Mike Hammer I still fly with my old futaba fg gold an I wanna convert that to 2.4

Plz do an episode for josh and upgrade that dinosaur of a receiver. And make him fly it. Art since he is the fashionable one
This is 8 years old! How did i not know?
When my dad bought his 2.4ghz DSX9 he had his old 9XII (same thing just 36mhz version) I was lucky enough to get it off him and throw a spektrum module in it, however $220 later and its a bit late to be looking at the cheaper Frksy stuff... oh well, im happy. :)
With the 9X, xjet (Bruce Simpson) did a FRSky mod and put the module inside the radio, so it looked normal.
yay josh flew, thanks man I knew he could fly, awesome
I have exactly the same Futaba T7 CAP and I want to upgrade to 2.4 Ghz , and at the same time keep also old functionality of old radio . The video is great , but how what kind of kit , how to install , , any instruction ??? Any details , where to buy it, installed ????
Great upgrade. Thx for the vid guys!
Great tip!! Thanks guys
I have the same Tx, and would love to do this upgrade, however these units aren't available in the US only thru Hobbyking in Hong Kong, don't want to wait, any other options?
@FinalFrag Can you get a screen shot of that? It needs to be on the forum's "Captions" thread!
Awesome show, Happy new year to the crew :-)
Great Video Guys!!
will you do an range test ? pleas ? :) happy new year to the crew !
@keek1997 its a diversity receiver which should increase the range
I have this radio (without throttle ratchet) and I love it more than my dx8. I just ordered the hack module because the old futaba keeps going as the dx8 craps out
This is awesome! Where's the link?

Spektrum DSMX or JR is the way to go.
ever get around to range check? I picked up the basic module to convert a very old 4 ch tx similar to that single stick tx, figured retro would be interesting to try...
For kraft which is the signal wire?
So all you need to do is to cut the wire that goes in to de turnigy 9x module and just plug the frsky module in?
Whats the difference between V1 and V2?
Nice...Thanks guy's...
What?!? David left for home a couple of weeks ago... he's back already???
Look the 72Mhz was retracted when they switched to it.
Yea! They let Josh fly!!! ;)
Where are those links, guys?
i am on the fence if i should get this. i have a futaba T7CHP and have had frsky before
Ok, they talk about several hundred dollar 72 Mhz transmitter. I've got a 10 euro 35 Mhz transmitter. :)
where there 2 receiver in the plane? one for the 72mHz mode and another for 2.4Ghz?
Why does that wire need to be cut? I have a Futaba 9CHP, if I get the module, do I have to cut anything? I don't need to solder either right? It's just a module you plug in.

Ty for your uploads.
Wow scot this is poldest radio I ever seen
Don't listen too em josh... dat thang got more moves than ELVIS! :>)

i purchased a transmitter 3s lipo 8C 2200mah for my futaba 72Mhz radio that took 8 AA batteries with new lipo it reads 12 volts will this be OK
This was very informative but I would like to find out if my old futaba 5 channel is upgradable to 2.4ghz
Is it possible?
Funny I just did this upgrade on my T7CHP! What are you guys using for a battery on it, it look small is it a 3s 850?
Where is David's link? I don't see it below.
How about a transmitter on a chip? The size of say a ps3 controller...
Wow, I knew the ban on 72 was coming but I never paid much attention. Guess it sucks for all those AMA and club members out there. Can you still buy this mod?
what about assan?
@jasser222
also possible, but old system
FrSky is far superior
How is it creepy? It's just David talking about how to solder the wires.
any way for Futaba T9 to 2.4Ghz?
4:30 is pretty creepy :D
That switch - it's a bad idea. It can be switched accidentally during flight, or loose contact over time. Having less switches in RC and power circuits is always better and SAFER
David looks like okay face :D
I thought it was Fry Sky
Will work on quads?
FindmeKicksUK its the transmitter so yeah. but there isnt much reason for it unless you do have a 72mhz radio that you wish to upgrade.
I enjoy these videos a lot, but I find little Josh to be quite annoying.
colours are a little flat
i did the same 2 years ago lool!
"I'm Josh and this is Josh. HI!" ugh...
@halo001ify Hey guys look! The freaky video game nerd knows about tx brands! How he was able to leave his basement dungeon is beyond me.
0:20
Just wanted to see where the the 3 connections were on the Futaba. Instead what a mess up this video is.
That's not as creepy as 9:47
uhf.....
