Installing the FrSky 2.4GHz DIY kit in a HobbyKing Turnigy 9X radio

  • If you want to upgrade the standard Turnigy 9X version 2 radio from Hobby King to the more resilient FrSky system then here's how it can be done, by installing a DIY kit.
    The FrSky offers a number of benefits over the standard Turnigy (FlySky) system including:
    * user-definable failsafes
    * a wider range (4, 6, 7, 8-channel) of receivers
    * more resilience to interference
    * longer range
    * receiver antenna diversity on all 6+ channel units
    My apologies for the bad audio in parts of this video.
    If you have any questions or comments, you can ask them here, or in the RCModelReviews forums.
    And don't forget to visit www.rcmodelrevi...

    Dear Bearded King of all DIY. I just received my TG9X with the FrSky DIY module, and within the hour it was working. It wouldn't have worked without your video guide. Thank you very much!

    I have to admit that when I got the kit, I had no idea as to what the instructions were telling you to do. How you figured it out, I can't imagine.
    Congrats on a great YT channel, one of the best from the point of view of those of us not afraid to tinker.
    Many thanks.

    Bruce that would be really great. (a DIY demonstration on how to fit the FrSky DHT into the Turnigy 9X)
    Of course we all have our own ideas on how to do it, but if you get the time to show your plan of attack it might ignite ideas that we haven't thought of.

    Though I don't need to convert my transmitter to FrSky, I enjoyed your video. You did a great job of explaining what you were doing and demonstrating proper soldering techniques. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Thanks much! Just ordered the DIY kit from HobbyKing along with an extra 8 channel receiver. Also, like an idiot, I ordered Frsky JR module with receiver. Tried to change it, but oh well... $20 mistake on my part since I don't need the module for the 9x conversion. I did get an extra receiver out of the deal, but no need for the JR module..

    Can I tell you, having fiddled around with soldering irons for I-don't-know-how-long, the thing you did where you held the wire in two fingers with the solder between your thumb and index finger... that's gold.

    Bruce,
    I tried your mod on a FlySky 9x w/the FrSky V8HT & V8R7-SP receivers. I had no problem binding & servos worked great the first time around + activated & tested FailSafe. I put the small LED & Switch on the back using some hot glue as cushion for the board and strapped it to the bk case w/ the screw from the blk stub which is screwed to the case.

    I agree with the Q.C. It doesn't take much effort or cost to spend that little extra time and care to make a quality product. Relying on a percentage of reject because of cheapness isn't acceptable. Thanks xjet for your contributions and entertainment.

    Have to learn to pay attention more closely. I read your review of the Turnigy 9X from some years ago and didn't think about the date. I was mainly interested in the reasonable price. I thought I was getting a deal with the combo price including the RX. First I added the backlight kit and as soon as I started programing I noticed the Fail Safe didn't work. Now after more research of your videos I have ordered a FrSky DIY kit and a D8R-XP servo. Now up to approximately $154 I could have put toward a Taranis or some other radio. The good thing is I'm learning as I always have the hard and costly way. :)

      +Lloyd Prunier I have been flying all sizes of quads with 9x and 9x with Open tx since this vid came out and 3 of the 4 are still working great. I just use the 4th for spares like gimbals etc and recalibrate after replacing them. I have Futabas I cant fix as easy and are easier to break.

    another option could be using the frsky module in the back and plug it to the transmitter antenna using a cable instead of installing the diy kit, in that way I could easily swap modules in the back and keep using the originals turnigy receivers (of course connecting the antenna to which module I'll be using)... anyway very nice review I'm a fan of your videos!!!

I wished you would have stated this before since i ordered this system from Hobby king after watching your video on installing and testing it and everything seemed fine. luckily i have not put this receiver in my system without this piece of important information. I hope you make this information known to your viewers before they did what i did without the knowledge of a better choice. (I enjoy your channel)

    from doing a little more reading, there are two versions of the 9x. if the antenna comes out of a little box in the back, and not the transmitter itself, its an easy pop in, if not, and your antenna comes out of the transmitter, you have to follow his steps in the video, so the box will be default when clipped in.

    Nice video. I did something similar only I went a step further and mounted the original Turnigy antenna directly to the plug in module. Now I can use it or my Corona plug in module (yuck) or soon my own FrSky module.
    Love my 9x radio and I think I will like it even more with the FrSky module.

    A small tip for putting the screws back. The screws are a bit too snug and can strip the holes, so to make their way easier put some soap on them. Hard soap, not the hand washing liquid thing Also it doesn't matter if it's Dove, Palmolive or the cheapest around. You can tighten the screws fairly easy now and it will hold just fine.

  • @koo2299
    @koo2299 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I ordered the one you stick in the back 2 weeks ago and should get it within 2 days. I think the biggest advantage of it is that you can swap between Frsky and Flysky so you can still use hobbyking or turnigy receivers with the old module.

    If anyone need a transmitter for conversion, Turnigy 9X costing $53 is natural choice. 9X programing capability is superb, better than other 9ch brands.

    @RCModelReviews Thanks for the reply Bruce. my big plan was to reflash the firmware with the improved ER9X from erazz. i have to wait for the pogo board for eprom flash to come off of back order first. in the past with my 72mhz systems i ran dual recievers splitting the arplane down the middle. i reiciever for 1 ele, 1 ail and one of the rudder servos. and the othere reciever for 1 ele , 1 ail ,1 rudder and the throttle . i've had recievers fail and the dual setup saved my but twice now.

I know I can bind the V929 to it as well, I just need to google more.

  • @roboteernat

    @nitrovice the brand and wattage doesnt matter. The rating on the soldering iron just means higher the watts, quicker it heats up. A 16 watt soldering iron will be as good as a 30watt one for this application. It matters when you start soldering thicker wires / traces etc.
    IMO stay away from 5£/$ cheapo ones, and get a Antex make, 16 watt or 18watt. These are better and have different tips available. a standard chisel tip will be fine (these are standard on this wattage)
    LEAD FREE!!

    @gtrguy32 i was more or less unsure if you could run two recievers bound the the same radio without any issues of being erratic or range issues. From what everbody online says about the 9x , with good firmware and the frsky module it is capable of being a very good radio. the er9x firmware makes the radio more fluent to program and gives better mixes with better 5/9 point curve adjustments.plus you get a nice little EL backlight with the pogo kit. thanks for such a quick response :D

    Ken, I don't think the radio is approved by the MAAA (but HK does show "** C-Ticked & certified for the Australian market" for the 9X).
    This probably means you cant use it at MAAA affiliated clubs. My local is about $200/yr (+ working) bugger that for a joke, I think I will stick to parks and reserves. The actual TX list is very small and probably fixed to suite the importers cartel. (my opinion only). Have a look at the MAAA site. Changing the module probably wont make it compliant (for them).

    I have enjoyed your videos over the last year. Thank you for providing good stuff. I do have 2 questions about the Turnigy 9x. In this vid you mention one of the benefits of switching to frsky is to get fail safe option. However, on my Stock Turnigy 9x under Settings options on the 1/2 screen on the bottom right it has" fail saf" and when you click it you go to option to set fail safe parameters i think. Never used the radio yet so I don't know if that is what it is for or not.

Though i'm starting to wonder, by the time i take the T9X, the DHT and the D8R reciever (or perhaps the v2 of that) i'd probably have the equivalent of a $150 dollar radio with a decent 2.4 ghz system with fail safes and what not. Would it be better to purchase another radio for that cost or would this be a practical modification.

Apparently, according to an old post on rcgroups, the old plug in modules used to get over-volted and could fail because "the 9x drives the ppm signal to the module direct from the atmel processor.... driving a 5V signal into a 3.3V processor input."
    Is this still an issue or now fixed on 9x/9xr? Cheers

    Hey Bruce, I haven't looked through all the comments but did you know that you can bind the hobbyking 3ch and 4ch rx's to the 9x? Although the FrSky is really a great upgrade it's a nice option for anyone that just wants the standard 9x for smaller models.
    Peace from Oz.

    I love your videos.
    Can you tell me the part number for this FrSky system? And I'm assuming that it is from Hobbyking. I've looked but cannot find it.
    As far as I can see there isn't even a plug in system for the Turnigy 9X transmitter. There is for other makes but not the Turnigy.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards

    Is there an easy modification i could make to the receiver that will allow the fail safe to be "persistent"? or should i just replace the Corona system with the FrSky system? I do not want to cause someone harm because i forgot to set the failsafe in the Corona system. Thanks for the timely response you have been making to my comments.

    Hi Bruce ~ Great video as usual ! ! ! Can you help with a small aerial problem please ?
    I need to re-connect my Turnigy Module to the original aerial wire to sell the 9x as I've upgraded my Tx. The co-ax wire is micro thin and I can't easily see the connections to the Module even with a magnifying glass ! Any help would be most appreciated Bruce.
    Kind Regards from Eddie in the U K.

    Bruce, would these instructions also be applicable to the FR SKY DHT telemetry diy kit?
    The only apparent difference appears to be the extra compaibility three way switch.
    Thanks in anticipation. Phillip

    Honestly thanks a lot for making this video. My new T9x is now outfitted with FrSky, it seems to work great thus far, and this vid made it a quick job with nothing left to figure out.
    And LOL - "little chinese ladies with their big manly hands" :)

    Bruce:
    How would you go about finding out which wires and where they are in trying to install one of these kits on a Airtronics rds8000 radio? Would you need to remove some part of the transmitter? If you did not, wouldn't it still transmit on the original2.4 and the Frsky 2.4? Would using a lipo effect the frsky negatively? Still waiting for HK to bring out the 9xr! Have you heard anything about changes in that radio or when available?
    Thanks for your videos.

    Why didn't you take out the old transmitter parts on module and replace it with the new transmitter parts? Then you could have put your antenna out the back of the module like a FrSky transmitter by drilling a hole out the back of the module. Just wanted to know.
