- I take my 2022 Yamaha XSR900 motorcycle out for a ride to test the fuel tank range, we go through some great country roads to finally find out how much fuel is in the reserve on this motorcycle!
I've been wanting to do this ever since I got mine. Thank you Sir.
It took me far to long to get this one organized but glad it's done, very valuable to know.
I just got done on a long road trip in FL, crossing "alligator alley" and just cruised at 60-65 with -1 on the front sprocket. Got over 50 mpg EASILY not being super conservative. Could have done more. Also have full exhaust, intake, and Vcyclenut flash.
It’s helpful to use the fuel consumed feature instead of the fuel gauge. It takes all the mystery out.

Mine got about 130 miles on the highway. I didn't make any attempts to be fuel efficient until it started flashing at the end. I didn't run it fully out but it started flashing at around 120mi and when I got home at 128mi from a trip. I very carefully and lightly rode to the gas station about 2 miles away the next morning and didn't have any stutters. I wish I recorded how much gas I put in but I do remember it was definitely pretty empty.

Cool stuff. I got a tracer 900 gt that’s stripped down to resemble my old Fz09, but now with longer range, cruise and better ergos. In theory it could get a little more than 200 miles (us). My xsr probably could do 150, maybe, but not the way I ride it. Like the video, fun experiment. 👍🤪🇨🇦
Thanks, I thought it gives a good idea of things, basically no matter how you ride if you look at it that if you take your range when you hit reserve and multiply it by 1.37 it's gonna be ballpark your out of gas point. For me I still would only go to about 250km max I think but nice to know I don't need to stress like I would at 230 or 240km before.
Yeah, I've cried about Yamaha using 14L tanks on all the MT/XSR bikes from the beginning. They should be 17L like most bikes were for at least 20 years.
a bit bigger tank would be nice but I think I can work within the range comfortably enough. I'm looking to get another bike for touring on longer trips, mainly for better luggage and comfort.
@@LindseyExplores Most of these naked sports bikes are pretty comfortable as they are, but a bit more leg stretch and some wind block would be nice. Put a set of crashbars on the sides, attach some foldable highway pegs to them.
@Lifted_Above I'd rather keep the xsr900 as it is for the shorter fun stuff and get a pan america or tiger 1200 for the long distance riding, they are way more comfortable position for my plans. I'm looking at my north island 800 video when I'm talking about time and distance for comfort.
@@LindseyExplores Yeah, distance really highlights where the fatigue happens. I did 4450 miles or so in 2 weeks once, on an FZ1. Custom seat on it, sheepskin, fully uncorked engine, otherwise pretty much factory for the rest of it. Wasn't bad at all, but I sure was done riding for a little while after returning home.

This is such a cool video. I've never actually thought about doing a proper range test on any of my bikes ... I wonder how much the range decreases if you ride the bike in a more spirited fission.
Thanks, appreciate that. It changes quite a bit, if I push consistently throughout a whole ride reserve kicks in at 190km so that's a 20km loss right there. If you use the numbers from this video, makes reserve come on with 25% of the tank to go roughly. Say your reserve comes on at 190km, possibly looking at an out of gas point of 250km potentially. I had never thought about doing this video until I did my distance riding challenge of 800km in 12 hours.
After a flash my r1 was getting about 200 to a tank so this is actually pretty impressive. I assume with a flash this will still get 150 miles which isn't great but I guess acceptable

Getting around 230 km from a mt-09sp driven at around 110km but if i drive her like she deserve, got around 140km lol!
14 liters is about 3.7 gallons. Yesterday, I filled up with about 11 miles on the fuel light. It took 2.9 gallons, which means the fuel light comes on at 2.7 gallons consumed. So, there's about 1 gallon or 50 miles of reserve to go when the fuel light comes on. Somewhere I had read that there's only 2.1 liters of reserve. Can anyone weigh in with their experience/knowledge?
The gallon seems logical, I mean Yamaha wouldn't give you only 20 miles left..right ? 50 yes.
I recently picked up a 2023 and when the fuel light began flashing, I went straight to the fuel station-about 1 mile away. Filled up 2.7 gallons too. So seems like the light flashes when you have 1 gallon remaining. I'm getting 36mpg or so which puts me at 133 miles a tank, theoretically. Better gas and under 3500rpm would help but not sure I could squeeze another 40 miles.
I don’t think anyone who purchased this bike would ride this way, defeats the purpose of owning it. You gotta get on it at least 3 times per tank 😂
I did stop a couple of times, just not relevant to the purpose of the video. Normally a stop every 150 to 200km is adequate for me on my XSR900.
Haven’t watched the whole video yet so I’d say 145miles based on the experience with mine so far.

I'm confused, Have I missed something ? You're trying to work out reserve capacity and range, but you rode around in 4th gear, reducing mileage , Why ?
I rode as I normally ride, If I did this test going into higher gears purposefully trying to get every extra meter possible then the information is useless to me on my every day riding. 4th gear at 100km/h is more than adequate and keeps the rev range (5000 to 5500) at a point where engine braking aswell as acceleration power is a nice balance. Occasionally 3rd gear at just over 7000rpm is fun place to be aswell. This was not a hypermile test.
@@LindseyExplores That still makes no sense, why do you ride around at 100K's in 4th ? I've been riding high powered motorcycles, with far more power than the XSR , for over 40 years, top gear at 100/110 is far more economical than riding around in 4th, It just makes no sense what so ever, ESPECIALLY when you're on reserve and trying to squeeze out the last Kilometer {i'm in Australia and have been in this situation a few times}. You been riding long ? Not trying to be a smart arse, but it seems pointless doing what you did in this video, riding "normally" would produce completely different results... I guarantee you that 99.9% of people that watch this video ride in top gear on the highway....

@@MickH60 Calm down. He performed the test for his own knowledge about his own riding style. He said in the video and in the comment above that it's not a hyper mile test. Now he knows he can go at least that many ks/miles on a tank. Of course he can go further if he keeps the revs down, but that's not how he rides. I don't even own this bike, but I enjoyed watching the experiment. If you didn't like it, just click off and watch something else. Nobody needs your approval or understanding before performing an experiment that is relevant to them.

You got some good power there and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video of you sending it, and using it for what it’s made for. All respect but it’s so boring just watching someone ride slowly everywhere
Most of the time I have my wife who is a beginner rider or a group with me, I also would not put a video out of anything crazy as youtube videos have been used by police locally. My main aim with this channel is more like a photo album for me in my old age to look back on what I got up to, lost far to many people in the past year and realised we don't take enough photos or videos of ourselves for memories sake. Views are just a bonus.
I find it entirely fascinating how you would feel the need to leave that little critique. "What it's made for" is to enjoy, be free and have fun. Not everyone feels the need to show off their big penis to the internet by uploading videos of themselves treating the public road like a racetrack however, sadly you may be an exception

@@Hellothere-xc5ph These bikes are fantastic commuter bikes. Excellent mapping, amazing throttle response, and even a mode to restrict full power. Maybe he prefers the smoother, more well put-together feel of a bigger bike...who knows? Im excited to see one of these out on NZ roads regardless of whether he's riding fast or slow. He gives some good info as he goes along too
