  • Walk through at @look_nungubon gym in Ubon Ratchathani, deep in Isaan. Beautiful gym, open air, simple but relaxing accommodation, and above all: stellar instruction by Golden Age great Neung Ubon. He's the only man in all of the world to have fought both Karuhat and Saenchai, taking a belt off of defeating the latter. Beat Kompayak Singmanee for his first belt at 105 lb; defeated Langsuan for the 112 lb title; took out Yodsiam for 115 lb title; and beat Saenchai for the 118 lb Lumpinee belt.
Contact on Instagram @look_nungubon or FB for training and booking.

I trained here for a few days in 2009. Super nice man. He had lots of pictures on the wall of golden era fighters. I asked him about Karuhat. He said he fought him 3 times, 1 win each and 1 was something like the ref stopped it because they weren’t fighting properly (I think). I may have misunderstood this but I didn’t want to press him on it.
Nuengtrakan Por Muangubon was also a trainer there at that time. He was a big Thai. Fought the likes of JWP, Ole Laursen etc. Spoke very good English and was a great trainer.
My first day, Nungubon took me on his motorbike to the park for a jog before training. I noticed he had a slight limp when running. He said he had fought the night before and had taken a few low kicks. I didn’t even know he was still fighting at this point. Probably just the odd local festival. He said he wouldn’t have been running because he was hurt but wanted to show me his city. What a guy. He was very proud of where he came from. He said it was the same park where he and Orono used to run. It was a bit surreal running in this park with Nungubon telling me this is where they used to run.
Must be surreal for you as well Sylvie training with all these legends. Keep up the good work.

I heard you say the word 'kuti' and it's the same word-concept in Hindi so it brought me a bit of a smile! this gym seems like really good vibes; really pleasant to see^

Thailand's Buddhism is Theravada and the language roots are Pali-Sanskrit, so a LOT of the words you'd be familiar with. Like ruup (rupa).

I stayed and trained here in 2003. Brings back nice memories. Great to see the gym is still going. NU is a gent and very accommodating. Is the ring surface still really soft and sunken 😂?
