    Incredibly insightful commentary as usual Damien. Completely agree on the location of the panels, they clearly were not a priority when it came down to panels vs celebrity access.
    It was great to see Steranko again but sorry you had to endure a Spanish Inquisition 😂

    Pablo Marcos is kind of an amazing, if undiscussed, guy in comics. There's at least one decent interview in an old issue of Comic Book Artist and he seems to have done everything for everybody at one time or another.
    He's Peruvian; one of his first comics jobs was drawing the James Bond newspaper strip in Spanish. He ended up in the big comics scene in Mexico; I remember seeing some of his Spanish language comics when I lived in South Florida. From there he jumped to Warren and Skywald. When Brodsky went back to Marvel, Marcos assisted for a while, putting together reprint packages for the UK, before he became an inker and eventually a penciller for Marvel and DC, as well as that short stint drawing Iron Jaw at Atlas.
    He got so busy, he eventually opened a Mexican-based studio that assisted his output. He drew the Conan newspaper strip, Star Trek comics, did stories for Heavy Metal and art for Sports Illustrated. You've got to admire his hustle,. My favorite work of his is Tales from the Zombie, very weirdly written by Steve Gerber. I believe any success it had was attributable more to Marcos' consistent work and the painted covers by his friend Boris Vallejo.
    Marcos still has a web page, where you can buy original art and he also accepts commissions (pretty decent prices too) but the guy is getting on in years...

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suspect my first awareness of him was on Iron Jaw. I remember being fascinated and disturbed by the art style, as a 12 year old…
      I think he might have recently done some Edgar Rice Burroughs work with Roy Thomas, initially published on line. I’ll have to dig around and see if I have that issue of Back Issue and look for his website!

  • @betaraybrad91
    @betaraybrad91 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I thought the con was a mess. I've been going to this con since the beginning really, and normally its fantastic. There was a multitude of problems from overcrowding, too many guests, not enough things to do outside of celebrity's (could have renamed it line-con), A LOT of miscommunication between staff. Nobody knew anything about anything, and by how frazzled the staff were, they seemed completely unprepared, understaffed and overworked.
    Panels were atrocious. There were mods that really shouldn't have been on stage. No Charisma, poorly planned, Hocking their personal projects, and the main stage/barn/tent needing separate passes (that attendees were unaware of unless the were lucky enough to stumble upon the pass table) was ridiculous. I over heard ming chen (who normally is a great moderator) was just told at the last minutes that so and so didnt show up and was asked to fill in. So here he is with no notes and is expected to run a panel.
    But worst of all was how the comics guests were treated. They all seemed out of the loop, and were shoved into that tiny stuffy room, with a terrible sound system, that was filled to the brim with the loud star trek meet and greet overflow line.
    I saw Mark Waid at the end of the show and he seemed so disappointed after he saw the coke a cola stage, and that it was OUTSIDE.
    I was angry at how the comics guests seemed to be treated as an afterthought. I mean comic cons exist because of them.

    • @sleepyreader666

      Perhaps the con has grown too quickly? I didn't make it previous years. Or maybe they are just following the money?

      @@sleepyreader666 I spoke to some staff and i was told they cast a wide net in regards to celebrity invites, expecting that they wouldn't be able to get everyone, but everyone said yes. And then that caused other people to schedule an appearance.
      I get it. I mean if I was in their position, how could i say "sorry entire next gen crew, we overbooked and don't have the space for you, maybe next year"
      But i feel they flew too close to the sun this year.

    I'll never understand why comic book companies don't want the creators to talk about their comics. Though I suspect it's that the company thinks they have some brilliant marketing plan that's going to make their comic a big hit and they don't want the creators ruining their plan.
