Yes, Overlay For a fighting game is a MUST IMO. Not so much for the other games, but it really detracts from how the current Fighting Game Community expects to play these games
Many people complained about the higher pricing of recent cabinets from Arcade1up like Killer Instinct, X-Men, etc. so Arcade1up obviously made sacrifices such as the screen quality to get the price a bit lower on these new cabs. In my opinion, had they used a higher quality screen and driven the price to $550-$600 then more people would have complained.
Yes, I agree it was a balance of getting these back to sub $500 for the majority of attracting new customer base. Most casual fans won't care about the monitor IMO
@@KongsRUs I had the original MK2 cab which was probably the same monitor and it never bothered me. As long as it plays good and the online play is smooth then that is all I care about. That and the design and quality of the cab itself.

Lol. I love when people who don’t really know how to play both games declare one better than the other. Great video though, very in depth. Thanks And if you learn the 6-7 hit combos and learn to use the run button in MK3 and UMK3 I think it will come close to changing your mind about SF being better. Just my two cents. But once you have all the tools working I find I can really flow in MK but SF not as much.
Thorough review Kongs! That's great that you can upgrade the monitor, taking a look at the monitor today it didn't look that washed out and the glare wasn't bad but it's surprising that Arcade 1Up regressed on the monitor issue. They clearly should have used better monitors compared to generation 1 monitors, especially for the cost of the cabinet.
@@one_point21_gigawatts inventory and availability is definitely the top reason they had to switch back to the lower quality monitor. Hope this means once more inventory comes back, future cabs will go back to the BOE
@@KongsRUs I hope so too bro, but it won't affect my decision to buy another one. I have Centipede incoming but had to pass on this MK. I prefer the original legacy, and personally didn't feel the need to change. 😊, great video by the way, as always!
@@one_point21_gigawatts That's definitely two good reasons why Arcade 1Up used a lesser quality screen. With the war heating up and escalating in Europe and tensions rising in the Far East part inventory across the board for electronic products will most likely become scarce as priorities shift towards weapons of war, unfortunately.
A1up should update this with an option to turn on/off the overlay, spectator and lobby system as I like the idea of not knowing how good an opponent is as in a real arcade enviornment. I think they targeted this cab for the casual gamers first.. but perhaps will do an update later for the lobby system if the demand shows up since there is no point in providing the extra programming if there's no audience for it.. at least not yet.
yes, you make a good point. It does mimic the real arcade experience to have someone random come up to you and not know how good they are. But it's hard to replicate that feeling online
Most reviews I've seen: "the monitor is fine except it's trash. If you're used to playing the game at a 15 degree angle with your back against the side panel, you're gonna see some discoloration which is ridiculous. Absolute garbage. When I main scorpion and have my back against the right side of the cabinet and reach my arms around the front like I always play, it ruins the gameplay." "I put on scanlines, and there were LINES across my already trash monitor. All I saw when my back was leaned against the right side of the cabinet was discoloration.. divided by LINES! I HATE DISCOLORATION DIVIDED BY LINES!" reviewers need to chill. This cabinet is badass
I'm sorry but I think a lot of people want the truest arcade experience and overlays would just muck it up. And it does keep track! They would have to reprogram a lot to get it to do what you want especially for the first one.
Sure, people will want different things. On the other cabs, if you play local games, there are no overlays for game play. Online Play especially in fighting games usually have an Overlay as a standard practice
Noo! I mean definitely buttons are very suggestive... But on this Competition Fightng Cab, You have to Recommend Happ Competition Buttons over Heavier Happ Concave button and be able to say why... So someone who wants American Buttons can then decide why they want hem for... Nostalgia, or Hardcore Gaming. That way you could explain enough for a user to make an informed decision on whether they are going American, Or Japanese button, But when going American, they can make a choice based on Nostalgia and get Happ Concave Buttons or IL Concave Buttons. Or make a choice based on Competitive play and go Happ Competition Buttons or IL Convex Buttons. EVEN THEN! Like I mentioned Happ Concave have a heavier Spring than Happ Competition Buttons (Which are Convex) which makes it a bit harder to press system even when using the same Microswitches. Now, IL Concave have a Softer Spring than Happ Concave, But Heavier than Happ Competition. IL Convex is as soft on the spring as Happ Competition, but the button Plunger sits Lower than a Happ Competition giving it a lower profile. The difference being with w Happ Competition you can hit the button sooner at the top, but IL Convex having an Opposite approach of feeling lower and being able to bottom out faster, but it's just a different approach for the same result. But I hope I explained it well enough that I don't come off as attacking you, as much as trying to help you help others .. I could see non Savvy people buying Happ Concave Buttons and crying about how trashy and heavy American buttons are when they bought a button system that is more effective for general arcade play... When people get owed online, the will blame it on Anything! So as long as you say enough for people to make a right choice, there should be less unhappy people
@@KongsRUs That wasn't my point. My point was that there are a wider selection of options and reasons for those options that people have Available to them. It was half finished. For you to sit here and only suggest Concave Buttons is a handicap to a player that could play better with Competition or Concave buttons from respective Happ and IL because th springs are softer than Concave. But maybe it doesn't matter for some, at least hey would have enough knowledge to make that choice.
Kongs, Great balanced look at the cab and I like that you pulled no punches. I feel SO FORTUNATE that Arcade1up was able to put out a Midway Legacy Edition in a look that appealed to me, a Defender! That Joust looks pretty sweet as well, BUT... I won't support the lackluster step back in quality and pay more for an unacceptable (to me) picture downgrade monitor. Been there, done that. I love Arcade1up, don't get me wrong, but they've become the "just good enough to get the job done partially," company. My dream was, after they brought out the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING Star Wars cabinet, that they'd keep that standard of excellence and keep striving for better. Nope. Every time I've gotten a new Arcade1up cabinet, the first thing I ask myself is, "What did they skimp this time?" What an awful feeling to have after spending one's hard earned money. Thanks to reviews like this, you just saved me a ton :) vgv
Kongs, Me also :) The ability to play 4 player Gauntlet and 3 player Rampage is what I was hoping for with these new Midway Legacies. Now that we know they can do it, I hope we see it again in a better quality iteration of a Midway Legacy. Fingers crossed for next year :) vgv
There are some real high points, and low points to this cabinet. I am a capcom player, but TBH I'd buy other stuff if the community was right... which does include all the things for online you mentioned. I know Code Mystics had a lobby system in some other games they did not for 1up. I also understand this cabinet has leased features from Code Mystics but was programmed by someone else. So I don't know if they can do anything with this with an update or not.
I was interested in getting my Star Wars Arcade 1 up upgraded to play Star Wars Trilogy but do I have to have a PC to make this happen. I watched a video in the past and u trick the deck out. But… Message me and I’m very interested.
i can understand the reason as to why people do not accept arcade 1 up selling these cabs with downgrade monitors, but, strangely enough, from what i have seen on this video the monitor is not that cheap, i would dare say i would even buy this cab if i could.
Kong shoot me straight....if i already have UMK3 do i need to upgrade to this? I own GTXL and switched out crap monitor...instantly improving it....is there a monitor swap thats possible with this pcb??
Honestly, the Sam’s Club UMK3 looks really nice, but I like the control panel, viewing angles, coin door, marquee, and WiFi of MK30th. If it had a BOE monitor it would be a top 3 cabinet so far by A1up. A friend has the MK2 legacy and I can’t see the top 1/3 of the screen standing up, horrible design with a great monitor and games list.
@@daviddeming1916 it really depends if you want online play or leaderboards. That's the biggest upg difference besides the looks, but if you don't care about online functions at all, UMK3 seems like the best non online MK cab
scan lines look better on 90s games with complex graphics. they don't look good on old games that have large areas of single colors. examples: use them on mk, ki, but not on rampage, shinobi.
Thanks for the detailed review. Crazy how A1UP cares so little about their products. So many mistakes between the artwork, button colors, monitor, and software. This $200 cabinet being sold at $500 is robbery. The joysticks and buttons alone are the worst you can get. Sucks you pay way too much and still need to pump more money in to upgrade just so it’s playable. At the end of the day, MK is worth $25, so not sure where A1UP is pulling this msrp from… maybe this is how they get the licenses… $300 license fee per cabinet.
nice review! However, I'm tired of Arcade1ups.. what you should do kong is get a modded MK arcade machine with at least 200 to 300 MK video games and all these MK games can be mugen MK games apart from the original. MK Mugen games seem to be more fun than original!
@@KongsRUs of course, if you youtube search Mortal kombat mugen, you will see alot of interesting MK games with so much more playable characters and beautiful background levels. I'm tired of Arcade1up because now they are just cash grabbing. They first released mk 2 arcade one up, then they released mk 2 legacy edition, then mk 2 supreme ( the red mk 2 arcade 1up machine) and now they have the so called "30th anniversay" MK arcade machine with pretty much the same games. For the price of these machines, they should at least put 100 games or more on it. I do own the first mk2 arcade 1up machine, bought it in 2019 ( just right before the pandemic) and got it brand new from walmart for $50. It was put on clearance along with the street fighter II machine, however space is limited in my house; so this is why I only bought one at the time!
@@KongsRUs In comparison to the MSHCE it's worse control-wise, monitor-wise, Price-wise etc. It's the "ever-green" model and isn't suppose to be the same tier of either MSHCE or Big-Blue, yet the price point keeps tipping upwards even on the ever-green models.
A1UP low balls on the displays to an absolute fault. Even worse, 17" displays on this and especially on lightgun games is criminal. Buying these simply enables A1UP to continue poor practices.

Nice video . So since there are no lobbies , you can’t play with a friend but just random people ?
you can add people to your Favorites list and find your friends to play with, not just the random folks that are available to play online
@@KongsRUs That’s good to know ! I have a question for you since you seem like you know everything ! I have a modded Namco and midway legacy. I’m only missing the trackball and spinner games and want to mod my tempest cab. Without a joystick , is this possible ? Like to control the menus with the trackball or buttons ? Any thoughts are appreciated. 😃 I don’t wanted to add or drill holes etc and did not alter my other 2 cab and they work great 😊
Depends on what front end you use, but you could use a spinner or track ball to navigate menus if you set them
@@KongsRUs so it should be possible without adding any hardware then. I would probably use a pie 3 with a Wolfanoz retropie build or something similar . I thought I could possibly even have just one favourites menu so I only need to scroll up and down and keep navigation simple . I have a friend who helps me since I’m not talented In modding department but I’m
Super happy with Glen’s 4/8 way gate switcher and would buy the GRS spinner and trackball to do the mod. It seems to be a less common cab to mod but so many great classics that arcade 1up may never release …….Arkanoid , Star Castle, Omega race , etc . I appreciate any thoughts you have ! Do you know anyone that has done this mod ?
@@petermacnab1871 I haven't done it and I'm not that versed in Pi mods. I usually use a PC with LaunchBox as my main front end if choice
I really enjoyed this review 👍 You’ve Convinced me to order one, but it might be for a little bit (Hope it’s still in stock)🙏
Thanks for watching!
Awesome review, but man that screen looks so washed out even in the front, or might be how it comes out through the vid cam. Sad 1up went this way for such a cool cab.
Great review - thanks for sharing! Good luck keeping your high score in Bubbles, ha!
Lol, it's already gone 😅. At least I have some evidence I was #1 and some point in time!
Super helpful as I am debating purchasing
Lol. I love when people who don’t really know how to play both games declare one better than the other. Great video though, very in depth. Thanks
And if you learn the 6-7 hit combos and learn to use the run button in MK3 and UMK3 I think it will come close to changing your mind about SF being better. Just my two cents. But once you have all the tools working I find I can really flow in MK but SF not as much.
You should definitely make a sticker that says “#It’s Playable!”
Lol, thanks Al!! I need to design a Sticker or tshirt, 😆
I've been holding off on buying any MK cab because I really wanted online. A bit disappointed to see it's not running as smooth as it should be
The online play improved, but you'll find casual matches here and there for MK players.
@@KongsRUs good to know. I'll still pick it up and enjoy it. Big Blue purchase after that!
1 step forward, 2 steps back. Digging the marquee at least!
Marquee is beautiful!!
I think inflation and part inventory could of played a part in why they had to go cheaper.
Monitor upgrade capability should definitely be a thing with all these cabinets going forward people want to mod there stuff and make it they’re own
yea, i'm still debating if i want to go through the trouble to upg the monitor on mine
When I main scorpion and have my back against the right side of the cabinet and reach my arms around the front like I always play, it ruins the gameplay."
"I put on scanlines, and there were LINES across my already trash monitor. All I saw when my back was leaned against the right side of the cabinet was discoloration.. divided by LINES! I HATE DISCOLORATION DIVIDED BY LINES!"
reviewers need to chill.
Hard pass for me but visually it’s def nice but big blue to me was done with more care and much more functional
Great points Ritualdelo! Appreciate you
So as long as you say enough for people to make a right choice, there should be less unhappy people
I appreciate the extra insight. Buttons and sticks come down to preference honestly tho
@@KongsRUs
That wasn't my point.
Kongs,
Great balanced look at the cab and I like that you pulled no punches. Thanks to reviews like this, you just saved me a ton :)

Thanks! Glad people can decide what they value and make that decision about their future purchases.
Kongs,
Me also :) The ability to play 4 player Gauntlet and 3 player Rampage is what I was hoping for with these new Midway Legacies. Now that we know they can do it, I hope we see it again in a better quality iteration of a Midway Legacy. Fingers crossed for next year :)

Thanks Steps!! 😄 SF > MK!!
"666" Subscribers? Oh boy!😈 LOL! Thanks man!😂👍
Lol, quick! I need more subs!! 😄
I was interested in getting my Star Wars Arcade 1 up upgraded to play Star Wars Trilogy but do I have to have a PC to make this happen.
I watched a video in the past and u trick the deck out.
But…
Message me and I’m very interested.
yes, Star Wars Trilogy runs on Sega Model 3 emulator and that currently only runs with a PC
i can understand the reason as to why people do not accept arcade 1 up selling these cabs with downgrade monitors, but, strangely enough, from what i have seen on this video the monitor is not that cheap, i would dare say i would even buy this cab if i could.
The monitor quality is definitely worse than cabs with 17" BOE, BUT it's not as bad as some folks say IMO. It looks much better and playable in person
Sams Club UMK3 is the Best version of this cab!
Think so? You might not be wrong honestly !
Good video thanks for sharing.
So the cab itself looks real
Nice but that’s it’s.
Will stick with my gen 1 mk2.
If you're happy with it, no need to upg!
scan lines look better on 90s games with complex graphics. they don't look good on old games that have large areas of single colors. examples: use them on mk, ki, but not on rampage, shinobi.
great point
14:41 *Spits out heresy*
To the Gulag with you.
It would be cool if they had MK4 just to complete the arcade series. In fact, I rather it had MK games only.
True, but this gives the cab more variety
❤️❤️👍 I just want to know- WHERE IS ALLLL THE PRO CABS Arcade1up said we will have??? They said- SEVERAL PRO LINE CABS!!!! When??????
#Soon
Awesome Video man
ARCADE1UP4LIFE
I really hope the yoga flame and shin shoryuken dont have this monitor
Me too! *crosses fingers*
these new monitors could very well be worse than gen 1 monitors.
i tested the MK30th PCB on a gen 1 monitor and the quality looks the same IMO.
Funny how you never see people that show you they actually know how mortal kombat complaining about these cabinets!
So mdf is good, artwork is good, lcd screen is not great, controllers are sub par. Noted, thanks for the review
Check check check!
Love your channel! You both rock!
Thank you!
Block button should’ve been white for authenticity points 😤
Definitely agree with this
@@KongsRUs guess you can just swap em. Everything else is really nice!!
Great video Bee!!
Thanks Sherlock fuggin holmes! I need you to get to the bottom of why we are getting these cheaper monitors!
@@KongsRUs 🤣🤣
Thanks for the detailed review. Crazy how A1UP cares so little about their products. So many mistakes between the artwork, button colors, monitor, and software. This $200 cabinet being sold at $500 is robbery. The joysticks and buttons alone are the worst you can get. Sucks you pay way too much and still need to pump more money in to upgrade just so it’s playable. At the end of the day, MK is worth $25, so not sure where A1UP is pulling this msrp from… maybe this is how they get the licenses… $300 license fee per cabinet.
I love ya Kong don't get me wrong but SF over MK? That's just wrong. MK > SF by a landslide.
Lol, to each their own! 😀
Shoulda said the art and design was absolutely FLAWLESS
nice review! However, I'm tired of Arcade1ups.. what you should do kong is get a modded MK arcade machine with at least 200 to 300 MK video games and all these MK games can be mugen MK games apart from the original. MK Mugen games seem to be more fun than original!
That's a lot of MK to try!
Worse parts, higher prices.
some worse parts, some better parts. $499 price point for a cab isn't as high as when Big Blue came out.
MK is awesome. Play it
i like mk 1, mk 2 and sf 2. i have always said sf 2 has better fighting gameplay, but mk games are cooler.
MK definitely changed the fighting game genre to be more gritty!
How cheeze is the the cpu tho? Lol
A1UP low balls on the displays to an absolute fault. Even worse, 17" displays on this and especially on lightgun games is criminal. Buying these simply enables A1UP to continue poor practices.
It ws better only the Mortal Kombat 1 game on it
washed out screen i'll wait for the Pro-series
Audio is low, so you get a dislike.
Thanks! You get a dislike too 😀
