As a VGK fan, I really don’t think Vegas outplayed Toronto that badly through the first 40. The Leafs had more high danger chances, and the defensive sticks and blocked shots from TOR were fantastic. As for the Whitecloud hit, I agree it isn’t obvious and your suggestion on the pod and this video with videos from the NHL explaining rulings for not-suspensions. Either way, GGs. It’s refreshing seeing such a defensive stalwart game from the Leafs, including blocking shots while not screening their goalie.

I was gifted 2nd row platinum seats to last night's game and to my surprise, the seats surrounding mine were filled with genuine leafs fans (not suits). The energy after minten's goal was high, and after the hit on knies, the building was as loud as it gets during the playoffs. it was a super exciting game to be at!
I think Steve to make it super easy for the league on what hits to pick it should just be anytime the officials have a review session that’s the indication that the league should post how and why the officials came to their conclusion. Which didn’t they use to do this with goal reviews regardless if the call in the ice was overturned or not?
I disagree with the Leafs being the worse team through the first 40 minutes. I think they were clearly dominant most of the game, but especially so after the Knies hit. They were generating more dangerous offensive chances than Vegas all game and their defensive game was likewise superior.
He didnt leave his feet. But what he DID do was go from a position of a hipcheck to a stand up position with upward motion. If thats not intent to hit high on purpose i dont know what is. And it should be the same rule of IIHF, if you aim high and hit the head, you know that was a possibilty and you get a major. Period. End of discussion. Come on nhl change this.
He didn't leave his feet. After the hit the Vegas player lost balance so it gave the impression of him leaving his feet. He didn't jump to make the hit
@@alexanderh.999 I gotta agree with this. People focusing on Whitecloud leaving his feet are looking at the wrong thing. Players leave their feet all the time after delivering a heavy check, it doesn't mean they are jumping into the check. The head-first portion of the play is where people need to zero in on. It's inexcusable there was no penalty on the play. It wasn't as bad as the Reaves hit, not sure it was suspension worthy, but 5 mins minimum. Maybe even the game.
I really hope Knies is okay, but I hope the discourse about this game doesn’t become solely about this hit instead of the fact the Leafs shut out a quality Vegas team and are now first in the Atlantic for the time being.
I was at this game. Everyone in the building was in it and it felt SO GRITTY. I felt like they came out strong and kept it on all game. A lot of passion on the ice and with the fans. I loved it!
The key difference between Reeve's hit and Whitecloud's is Reeve's hit was a miscalculation; Whitecloud's was exactly as he intended. Neither hit belongs in the game.
You know, it's tough because I understand why hockey fans want to limit the amount of reviewing that happens in the modern era of hockey. But, regarding dirty hits, I think it's a worthwhile and important security measure and investement. I agree with Steve on this. Careers can be affected, the trajectory a player takes can be entirely contingent upon a dirty headshot. Who knows what could happen to Knies, you know? All we DO know is this kid was having a career year. People were legitimately talking about Treliving making a HUGE offer now, before the season ends and he's a rookie with 35-40G and a similar number of assists. And the kid is a powerhouse who works hard, goes into corner, and plays HARD in front of the net. A 7 or 8M dollar contract is NOT out of the realm of possibility for a developing player like Matthew Knies. But a hit like this has the potential to destroy that dream (for Knies himself, but for the Leafs organization, and for fans who want this club to succeed). Having said all that, I absolutely hate the hit. I am willing to accept that I am probably as biased as it gets, and therefore this is not an objectively fair assessment. But because he's SO young, and even after these last 2 years, we have no idea how high this kid's ceiling is, I hate the hit. I think it was clear, just from replays alone, that the primary point of contact was the head. If that's true, what more needs to be said? I repeat: if the primary point of contact was the head, then what else can be concluded? I don't understand anything other than that conclusion. Thanks if you read my non-fiction shorty story ;)
The Leafs have injuries...Vegas has "injuries". Also, sure Grebenkin hit him from behind but maybe just maybe players should stop purposely turning their backs to the incoming opponent 1 second before contact...this happens way too much. Pasta did it the last time the Leafs played Boston. It is ridiculous.

Great game. I was there. Go to every game and thought it was a very entertaining game. Positive vibes. But to be a little negative, can we keep one of these younger guys and dump Robertson. If you just watch him durning the game he just flys around the ice doing a lot of nothing. Is is too weak and that might be acceptable if he actually scores, but he does not score either. If we want to be deep for playoffs we can’t be real with him the way he is playing this year. Otherwise, love this team
I thought they only out these performances together on Prime!!! This is how you play boys. Looks like a playoff team for the first time in 10 years. Well done Berube!!!
That was an incredibly not rival, rivalry game. I kept thinking, "i love that we're fighting back, but why is the hatred here!? We play these guys like twice a year!" But the refs... they screw everything up.. Edit- this league has no real rules, completely insane!
One of the draws that the Leafs have when attracting UFA's has been their medical staff and medical facilities. I've heard many times how they have the best in the league and it attracts players with recurring injuries or is a reason that certain players will be interested in the Leafs. Their trainers are good at helping players recover and get back on the ice, and when they can't they provide top noch care that you can't get anywhere else while you sit on Robidas Island. Over the past few years the following has happened: Matthews: Injured with something that they can't figure out/fix. Sent overseas to a professional at whatever the injury is (They won't tell us) Nylander: Reoccurring blinding migraines that are so bad he misses playoff games (if it wasn't just a concussion they lied about and let him play with after game 3) Matt Murray: Injured playing with the Leafs, out for a year and hasn't played in the NHL since. Joseph Woll: Has played a total of 42 NHL games and has been injured at least 3 times causing him to miss time. Klingberg: Injury, then flew on a plane which aggravated this injury to the point where he hasn't played in the NHL since. Pacioretty: Played 13 games and looked good, before going down. We haven't seen him since and its looking like we wont see him for a while. This list isn't including Jarnkrok, Kase, Muzzin. We can assume with ALL THESE PLAYERS that the medical staff did everything they could to get these guys healthy again and playing again, but if they can't do it then that Advantage the Leafs had with drawing players is drying up.
Matthew his head down like Nurse did. One of them got it wrong. If Reaves had hit Nurse clean it still would have been charging/boarding. He took several strides before the delivery. Robertson was pretty good checking. Also, I agree, Steve is special fan.
@@craigharrison5406 Demko may be one of the best (assuming he comes back from injury as the same goalie), but Lankinens is nothing to write home about tbh
You’re correct, Steve. I make videos for TH-cam on multiple channels. They already have all the content and would only need the explanation. It would garner views for them and help grow the league. It would be good examples for both adults and kids. AND they ought to love this, views will also gain them money. They have everything they need, but choose poorly. They also don’t realize that publishing old games on their TH-cam would actively grow the sport AND earn he league more money. But that’s another issue entirely.
They have so many Forwards out of the lineup now. They finally have depth in defense but now we're running out if bodies who can play forward. Maybe they should try putting Morgan Rielly up front and try him on the wing until we get a few of these guys back. I think they have enough depth at D to let Morgan try being a forward.
Any reviewed call could be easy for them to make videos from. I say this because when the Hockey NCAA does a review the program I use automatically makes the video edit for the officials on the ice to review. It is then uploaded to league safety board and officiating board either during review or at end of night.
Was at this one. Scotia center sounds mostly like just everyone is having a conversation through out the game. Until Minten scored, it erupted. Then when Knies got hit, it really erupted, and then when they called no penalty, you could have confused the roar of the crowd's bemoan for an earthquake. There was a guy beside me talking about how he thought it was a good hit, but then joined in the "Ref you suck" chants, and I said "Hey, you can't participate in this, you said it was a clean hit", lol. He laughed and said he still wanted the ref to suffer, lol. Definitely looked like that hit deserved a penalty to me.
There are so many variables that go into these sorts of calls and part of it is where the hit is in relation to refs, the puck, and the other players. If the refs are screened, they have a bad viewing angle, or even if the hit is away from the puck, they have to make judgment calls on the ice. It's hard to make a penalty out of a no-call and you can't review a two-minute minor. There are always going to be inconsistencies, but I think acknowledging them and doing those reviews will help referees be more consistent in their calls as they will see the same videos, but it will also give them the ability to explain the situation and not knowing is what makes us all the angriest.
My one worry about the "why this wasn't a penalty" videos is if there's a high-profile hit that the refs *incorrectly* say isn't dirty, its absence from the weekly roundup will be noticed and Conclusions Will Be Drawn. I'm not sure the league wants to go down that road.
The league does not need to make weekly videos as the standards are pretty clear. Illegal Hit - Any Leafs player hitting any opponet with a questionable hit. Penalty shall always be a 5 min major followed by a 3 to 5+ game suspension. Legal Hit - Any players hitting and injuring a Leafs player with a questionable hit is immediately deemed a good hockey play.
My son and I were at the game. 3 rows from the ice near the tunnel where the Leafs came out/went in. I felt like for the most part the Leafs were outplayed, but they were on the PK a lot during the first two periods. My son said that he saw Knies pretty much fall off of the Leafs bench after the hit by Whitecloud before heading to the dressing room. All of the callups seemed to play well, and Woll was pretty solid. I wasn't impressed by Nick Robertson's play at all, he seemed pretty meh. It was good to see some feistiness and fight in the Leafs after the hit on Knies. I was really impressed with OEL's mean streak and Tavares getting into the rough stuff. It really looked like the game was going to get out of hand quickly after the Knies hit. SBA went nuts booing when there was no penalty called, and the Leafs ended up on the PK. It was good to see the Leafs not lose total control and actually lock it down in the 3rd period. It was my son's first game at SBA and it's an awesome memory for both of us!
So idk who’s going to see this but I have Frazier Minten in my leafs rebuild on NHL 24 I can confirm he’s a dawg and I’m in year like 2038 or something crazy
Steve after this game im trying so hard to find the Podcast after the florida series when bennett drilled knies into the ice and you called parros "a F#$%ing Goon" i need to make that my ringtone after this
Yes, release a video on every hit. Put it in a public-access library. Increase credibility. For those that go to review, explain the decision. For those that don't, just share the video.
If it looks like its between shoulders and the head, and then Knies goes down holding his head, I think its safe to assume there was enough head contact for a penalty. Most importantly think of why these rules are made... player safety. That was not a safe hit. Was not difficult for Whitecloud to keep it lower and safer
i watched the game last night, when i saw the hit i said right away if reeves is 5 this is 2 for sure. you got alot of young talent that is going to keep this team good for a long time
That was a game of violence and victory that you'd expect to see from Tampa Bay vs Florida in the playoffs. The referees made the Leafs angry and I don't think I've ever seen them play like this, since the days of Gilmour and Tucker. It's not an easy thing to play a hard, physical game that puts Vegas on their back skate. The Leafs were lucky they didn't put themselves in a bad spot, because they spent most of the game after that trying to clobber Vegas, who seemed kind of surprised.
I got to go to the game tonight from NS seats were awesome second ever game first was last year against Tampa we won that night 4-1 and tonight what a game 3-0 wooo sad I heard Knies is now hurt too ugh !! I would say this game was great their PK I feel is one if not the best I’ve seen ..
It's wild that the NHL has all these ways to get calls right and they still manage to make the complete wrong decision every time. Best sport in the world, run by the worst people in the world. If only there was legitimate competition for this league to finally get them to wake up.
Folks at home may have picked up on it, and the folks there most definitely heard the "REFS YOU SUCK" chant that happened to be started by my good friend...he may have also accompanied it with a coupla hand gestures 😅😂💙
I think that the NHL should release a video explanation of every 5 minute major penalty thats reviewed, whether it’s upheld or not. It might be many videos one week, and few the next, but I feel it would be a pretty good overview of plays the NHL already feels they need to look at more than once. I’d give it to the head of officiating to script it, I think? Since it’s the referees that do the on ice review.
So apparently, the hit to the head rule applies when the hit to the head is the only (principle) point of contact. If you hit anything else, in addition to the head, the hit is good.
the league will never do that because they love the grey area where the refs can decide the calls based off w.e the hell they want instead of the rulebook. if a teams winning by 5 goals and their player gets a dirty head hit the refs will use the grey area to not call it a major and even it up so the team winning by 5 goals doesn't get a pp
I would at least like to see video explanations for rulings on 5min major reviews. If they're using the major call reviews rule as a tool to make sure they get calls right, they should be held accountable in explaining the final decision, just as they do with suspensions. Hits that don't get called at all and end up being a missed call like the Grebenkin one don't need to be explained IMO. It's probably just a missed call, no need to explain human error to us.
What did YOU think of the hit?

If you were listening to the radio, can you please maybe recommend how I can best listen to the radio streaming online from Pennsylvania? I love listening to them on the radio, but more than half the games on Sportnet 590 or TSN 1050 say they have the game and it’s something else.
@@chuck2967Yes. I wan’t some “Holy Mackinaw” on the tv broadcast.
As a vegas AND Toronto fan I was having an existential crisis watching this. Big fan of both you and Steve
Regardless it was more close than the score said or was
@@NexusO2-Golden_Knight u can’t be a fan of 2 teams. ur just not a fan of any team

I was there as well, arena was quiet until knies hit. After the hit arena comes alive, Leafs come alive. I think that’s where Vegas lost the game. Loved the way leafs responded. Definitely a different team, leafs started taking pens, killed them then scored goals. What a night. Woll is amazing
Leafs needed backbone for years and years. Berube reminded them they have one. This team is fun.
It was Shanny when he was in the NHL player safety who did exactly what you'd like to see.
He described the hit as he saw it and would describe it honestly and then release to public. It worked!!! Imagine !!! Lol
Not this time
the culture shift under berube is actually insane... i was hopeful, but it's next level. it's like pat quinn era, if quinn had a skilled roster.
yeah i didn't like the call for the hit, but i was LOVING how the leafs responded. its incredible to witness
If Quinn had a skilled roster? lol what? The 1999, 01 and 02 Leafs were pretty skilled.
Like you can argue there is more talent now offensively, but they were great, deep teams that played every situation well.
@@07foxmulder bruh that was an era of the Leafs effectively having zero depth and never had a winger for Sundin. Their skill was primarily old, end of career players with big names ie. Roberts, Mogilny, etc.
I think people forget how entirely dependent those teams were on goaltending
@@beebaebabybee Bruh the 01/02 Leafs had the third best goals for stat in the league. The 98/99 team had *the best* GF stat. Saying they weren’t skilled and making them sound like the Sabres of the 90s is pure revisionism.
I don't expect Knies will be out at all, _unless_ mandatory concussion protocol demands it.
Can't wait to see you in Dartmouth this weekend. Welcome to the East Coast.
Whitecloud left his feet. Look at the size. If whitecloud was a leaf it would be 5 and a game / suspension
Correctomundo. I like Whitecloud, but not as much as I did yesterday
@@anthonyfaccaro7118watch again, maybe in slowmo. His feet come about a foot off the ice and its not debatable
@a18yearoldonyoutubeluigi 1st in the Atlantic with a few Marlies in the line up
YEAH IT IS
I was at this game.
Can I suggest that it’s not that weird Matthews is seeing a doctor in Germany? He played a year in the Swiss pro league
GG's Steve you deserved this one well done.
Leafs are starting to look like a serious threat. Hoping the Knies hit (which was charging, by the way) doesn't derail the run.
We’re finally gonna be able to see the incredible depth the leafs organization has that’s good at least
Are we going to ask if Vegas should be embarrassed about being shut out by the Marlies?
That was no Marlies team. That’s was our kids maturing and transitioning to the big leagues. Great depth. Buh bye Robertson

Explanation of the Whitecloud hit and why it wasn't a major.
Knies was wearing a Leaf jersey. Whitecloud was not.
I caught that on the replay too.
I am so happy with the goaltending this year
Parros has the opportunity to be a comedian, and silence the Leafs DoPS conspiracy by suspending Whitecloud anyway
Except Parros is corrupt and biased
Leafs made the Knights defend and then they dominated behind their net. Simple strategy that worked against a defensive monster. Leafs looked like they had a game plan?
When Shanahan was in the NHL safety department, he used video to explain fines and expulsions
I spit my coffee out to the JT “engage in fisticuffs” comment 😂
I think OEL got the 2nd assist on the Nylander to Minten goal, not Holmberg according to the stadium announcement and ESPN.
I thought they only out these performances together on Prime!!! This is how you play boys. Looks like a playoff team for the first time in 10 years. Well done Berube!!!
Thar was a true 'character win' from the buds.

I love the coach letting the 4 lines just roll 🥐🥖 what a game 🎯
I loved what I saw of Grebenkin.

So cool you're going to halifax and Dartmouth. God i wish I could make this, 4 hour drive and stuck at work. Come back east soon!!!
That was an incredibly not rival, rivalry game. I kept thinking, "i love that we're fighting back, but why is the hatred here!? We play these guys like twice a year!" But the refs... they screw everything up..
Edit- this league has no real rules, completely insane!
Grebenkin will get a $2500 fine for his hit on Theodore.
Whitecloud, no fine.
what a joke of a league... best players in the world...worst officiating
It would suck to get a fine every time you delivered a hard clean hit.
Over the past few years the following has happened:
Matthews: Injured with something that they can't figure out/fix. Sent overseas to a professional at whatever the injury is (They won't tell us)
Nylander: Reoccurring blinding migraines that are so bad he misses playoff games (if it wasn't just a concussion they lied about and let him play with after game 3)
Matt Murray: Injured playing with the Leafs, out for a year and hasn't played in the NHL since.
If Woll stays healthy, the Leafs might have the best goalie tandem in the league

The ultimate assist: Make a pass, go to the bench, have a drink, grab an iPad to watch a replay of your pass, react to the goal you assisted on live.
Holy mackinaw Steve that hit review idea went right to my veins, atta guy!
Woll & Stolarz. Leafs are Blessed.
Except a lot of injuries this year.
He went to go film commercials in Germany.
I was at this game... probably the second best game ive ever been too (first was Matthews' 60th in 21-22)
just went to check for this video

There should be a special term for a bench assist where the person who replaces you gets a point, especially the goal.

“Give it to us tight and right” feel like I’ve heard that before
Yes, release a video on every hit. Put it in a public-access library. Increase credibility. For those that go to review, explain the decision. For those that don't, just share the video.
Wouldn’t it be the leafiest thing ever for them to lose brutally to a mid team as soon as Auston Mathew’s comes back?
If it looks like its between shoulders and the head, and then Knies goes down holding his head, I think its safe to assume there was enough head contact for a penalty.
Most importantly think of why these rules are made... player safety. That was not a safe hit. Was not difficult for Whitecloud to keep it lower and safer
i watched the game last night, when i saw the hit i said right away if reeves is 5 this is 2 for sure. you got alot of young talent that is going to keep this team good for a long time
The hit to Knies has the hallmarks of a playoff non-call and some serious favouritism from the league for Vegas.
@SteveDangle , if you get a chance in Halifax, go to Midtown Tavern (next to the Scotia Bank Arena - Metro Center). And have the steak.
If only there was legitimate competition for this league to finally get them to wake up.
for the first time in the modern era, this team is good and you're not wrong to think they could really go deep.

See if it’s like Ontario. With all those Gaundo & Rundy. Thanks Dude
I was at the game last night and it was wild but it was fun
