My husband has worked for a restoration company for 20 years and occasionally they get calls like this for people who have passed, committed suicide or were murdered. He has to go look at it and come up with a plan to clean and estimate. It completely effects him. Even though the body has been removed, the smell and body fluids/pieces are still there. He always says a prayer before walking in and then again when walking out. It's an extremely traumatizing experience.
it doesn't, at least for me. I'm not cleaning the places, but I deal with the bodies from those places (occasionally, usually its just old dead people in retirement homes). I'm a student, so at the moment it's just for the money, but after a case like this you go take a shower and usually its out of my thought by then. I usually just deal with the bodies, the talks with the relatives does someone else, but it changes things when you first come in contact with their grieving loved ones. but usually i can just dissasociate, it's just "dead organic matter", nothing behind it. As someone who has smelled a decomposed body before, imagine a very poorly kept outhouse in the hot summer, mixed with rotten fish, ammonia, and sewer gas. The smell is so overwhelming and intense that it feels almost impossible to breathe.
Putrefaction, yeah. There's nothing quite like it. It's essentially a chemical burn to your senses. Only thing I've smelled worse is a rotting whale carcass that had exploded, then baked in the sun. That was heinous.
You never forget the smell of decomposition... when you smell it you know instantly what it is. Having volunteered in a mortuary it's so hard to get the smell of your skin when you've been around it.
@@kayleet8370 Another smell that comes fairly close to being just as bad as putrefaction, is homemade nettle fertilizer. Take some nettle leaves, put them in a bucket of water, then put a lid on the bucket and leave for 2 months. Open it, give it a whiff...... It smells like the gates of hell, but will work miracles on plants.
I had to clean up a dead chicken and that was the most putrid shit I’ve ever done, the smell was so horrendous it literally stunned me. I couldn’t even imagine what a decomposed person would smell like.
As a Funeral Director, now retired, I attended many similar scenes Ben describes. It was fascinating to hear you speak Ben. We were often second or third on the scene after the Ambulance service and the Police and would remove the deceased. I never really thought about who would clean up afterwards, so thank you for your insight. I have great respect for yourself and your colleagues and for all the services that do such a difficult and ultimately rewarding job.
This man is a beautiful example of taking the ugliest parts of society and finding a way to find a light. He wants to help those who survive a tragedy, he’s inspired to spread love and positivity. He’s inspired myself and hopefully others to be a better family member or friend. God bless him and those he touches.
These folks are a different breed. As a cop, I attended many suicides. One, in particular, a fellow had wrapped his lips around a .303 Lee Enfield and pulled the trigger. He was sitting up against a wall and nothing was left of his head except for his lower jaw, which looked as if it was made of play-doo and seemed to have stretched out 18 inches wide. Anyhow, a suicide note was found (girlfriend dumped him) and the Medical Examiners office had cleared the scene after confirming it was an unsuspicious suicide, and I was left waiting for the cleanup crew. They arrived in button-up shirts and ties! Put on gloves and proceeded to walk around and collect up the dozens of pieces of skull, brain and skin as nonchalantly as if they there were picking up cigarette butts from their front yard....and the pieces were upstairs, downstairs...everywhere...as the head exploded with massive force and the parts ricocheted off of everything. Afterwards, they brought a stretcher in, loaded the poor guy, and were done. In and out in 30 minutes. This was about 04:00 in the morning. I asked these guys what they got paid, expecting it to be in the thousands....Like, seriously, who would willingly wake up in the middle of the night to perform such a task for less than 4 figures? The answer was about $100 (20 years ago)....they said they made the same for this type of job as they would if they had simply recovered a deceased from a nursing home....that they had to take the good with the bad to retain the government contract. Thereafter, whenever I thought my job was sucking, I remembered these two chaps. One-in-a-hundred thousand..... Gosh bless them.
Bless them indeed! I can't even imagine having to do that job, seriously, even if offered one MILLION quid or dollars....seriously (Although, I WOULD, however outsource it to someone who would happily do it for a couple thousand, lol)

@@katiesimpson4514 Yes very true. For one to figure out why this has come to be, one should understand that systems and laws have and are purposefully being implemented to breakdown the human experience, to fragment it and cause it to deteriorated and become unproductive. FINALLY!! Hats off to YOU!! *I am a former crime scene photographer* and it is not an easy burden on families (especially with suicides), when they realize that the police do not clean it up for them. Back in those days, I dated a man who's maternal uncle committed suicide. Yes the county coroner removed his uncle, but that was it. Cleaning up fell on the family and no one wants to do that. At least I was able to give them several names to call.

Listen to this man describe such horrific and gruesome scenes is honestly so fascinating, but not in a million years would I be able to actually witness what he so gracefully described for us. Honestly the man could write a book and even if he were to mention how someone washed their dishes, it wouldn't be a boring read.
These people really are quite exceptional beings. Years ago I had a fire at home and whilst the only injury was to a friend who gashed his arm helping my two young children to safety we learned the clean-team sent by the insurers were the same people who also clean up really gruesome situations. They didn’t say too much but what they did describe was pretty stomach churning. And from that day forth I’ve always held all cleaners in the highest regard. Very skilled. And very, very respected 🙏🏻
He kind of looks like Gordon Ramsey. On a more serious note, I haven't been this captivated listening to someone tell their story in a really long time. He is a great narrator and his experiences are certainly unique. I would love to hear more from him.
Absolutely ..I see his facial resemblance to Ramsey very strongly ! This guy is so.zen like ,calm and pilute he could do old Gordon the power of good ...watched that Kitchen Nightmare show last night and he acts like a sociopathic brat ! 😂
I have a close friend who's dad is a firefighter and some of the things he has witnessed are so horrific its unbearable to think about but despite what hes seen he is the most down to earth kind genuine guy you would ever meet and this bloke is another example of that it must be that people who witness such terrible sights appreciate life more and embrace all the good things that go on around rather than focusing on the negatives
Same, I know someone who's a firefighter who's had to pull people out of rivers and their skin has peeled off. The worst though he said was when it's children you find in burnt buildings. They must surely get support from counselling or something you would think.
This guy is so respectful of how he talks about places he has cleaned. I read a lot of thrillers and have always wondered how people become crime scene cleaners. Very interesting.
I’d started watching crime scene cleanups on TH-cam a few years ago when unfortunately a good friend passed in my home. After being through the apartment & just being shaken with the situation, I cannot express enough thanks to people who do this. My FIL worked as a surgical tech & cleaned the apartment for me luckily, but to clean it myself would’ve been intensely traumatic to be very fucking honest!!!
Thank you for your dedication to helping home owners/families after such traumatic events. I have an ileostomy so hearing the beginning of this was a struggle. But it takes certain personality to be able to do this so my utmost respect to you and colleagues.
I remember in my first year of uni I heard about a kid throwing himself out his dorm window, then after the summer visiting my friend in their dorm and they were upset that their windows didn’t open fully anymore and I had to explain why. It’s heartbreaking stuff, but being a kid so stressed with uni work I can definitely see why someone would think in the moment it was their only out. I’m relieved it sounds like it’s worked, and is a successful preventative measure. Mad respect for this guy.
What a man. Dealing with bodies is one thing. Seeing the trauma and the emotions with a family. I wouldn't dream of then having to clean it. What an thankless job.
Excellent video, top to bottom. He seems so genuinely human and respectful in regards to what he’s talking about, and the questions asked were absolutely spot on. You’ve done it again, Lad.
He seems like he really cares, considering how he wanted it for quick cash, and now he can speak, but speaks so respectfully about it all, incredible guy.
As a true crime fanatic, this is incredibly eye-opening for me. We should definitely highlight the contribution of such people in the aftermath of a tradegy.
I’ve done this job. I was in the army reserves as a medic and as messed up as it is, I wanted experience around carnage just in case we deployed. Medic training is top notch, but nothing is as real as real life. Most of my jobs were suicides. It was sad to see people from the poorest to wealthy in a place where the ended their lives. RIP
Having worked for an Emergency service I attended many many scenes where someone had been dead for a while. I could handle some of the horrendous things I saw, but there was no way I could of coped with the cleaning process. Full of admiration for this man.
Social media is one of the major factors, as well as the overall system of being forced into education more times than not into a subject you didn’t know existed when you were a kid with dreams
This is exceptional professionalism coupled with nerves of steel!!! Considering even the fact that he can talk about those experiences, in such a calm manner is absolutely unfathomable!
It takes a special person to do these kinds of things and I’m so grateful. My grandpa committed suicide but he was a coroner and mortician himself in his earlier years. So when he took the 🔫 to himself he covered himself up and put a pillow over his head on his bed and my parents found him couple hours later. After the coroner took his body I seen some of the aftermath and I’ll never forget the amount of blood on his bed and the chunks of skull everywhere even though he tried to prevent that by covering himself.
The utmost of respect to this man and the job he does ✌🏻 If the crime scene cleaning career ever ceases, he can always narrate audible books. Such a calming voice, and therapeutic
He is so right. You never know what you're next call will be and every call is so different and unique in it's own way. Each call is as memorable as the next. I'm sure you would become desensitised fairly quickly
it doesn't, at least for me. Sounds cruel, i know, but I guess that's how I cope with it anyways.
@@-max-4920 I used to be this way until experiencing the traumatic death of a loved one, then I lost that ability, my empathy came too far to the front and now I always meet their loved ones in my mind and it's hard to switch off.

Gosh bless them.
hope they get paid more nowadays... i wouldnt bat an eye if they can earn thousands from a clean up. they SHOULD earn more...

Sadly, agreed. The very fabric of society has been eroding for many years now. Not just in our own back yards, but globally too.
@@katiesimpson4514 Yes very true.
For one to figure out why this has come to be, one should understand that systems and laws have and are purposefully being implemented to breakdown the human experience, to fragment it and cause it to deteriorated and become unproductive.
