    People call out the name of God as an expression of amazement or anger. I find this a far more disturbing and hurtful than hearing the S and F words.

      zaida rodriguez Being infinitely resourced precludes a capacity for offence. If you found out that one of your gut bacteria referred to you in an offensive manner to a fellow gut bacteria, would you really care? And this is a weak analogy. The difference between you and God is considerably greater. You can't have a God that is both omnipotent and is capable of getting angry- it's oxymoronic.

    Question: "Is it a sin to cuss / swear / curse?"
    Answer: It is definitely a sin to swear (curse, cuss, etc.). The Bible makes this abundantly clear. Ephesians 4:29 tells us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." First Peter 3:10 declares, "For, whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech." James 3:9-12 summarizes the issue: "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water."
    James makes it clear that the lives of Christians-the “brothers”-should not be characterized by evil speech. By making the analogy of both salt water and fresh water coming from the same spring (which is uncharacteristic of springs), he makes the point that it is uncharacteristic for a believer to have both praise and cursing come from his/her mouth. Nor is it characteristic for us to praise God on one hand and curse our brothers on the other. This, too, is uncharacteristic of a true believer.
    Jesus explained that what comes out of our mouths is that which fills our hearts. Sooner or later, the evil in the heart comes out through the mouth in curses and swearing. But when our hearts are filled with the goodness of God, praise for Him and love for others will pour forth. Our speech will always indicate what is in our hearts. “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). Why is it a sin to cuss / swear / curse? Sin is a condition of the heart, the mind, and “the inner man” (Romans 7:22), which is manifested in our thoughts, actions and words. When we swear and curse, we are giving evidence of the polluting sin in our hearts that must be confessed and repented of. Thankfully, our great God is “faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). When this happens, we receive a new nature from God (2 Corinthians 5:17), our hearts are transformed, and our speech reflects the new nature God has created within us.

      Abdown Adad not really. Is fuck really "evil speech"? I see a lot of people confused on this. It depends on the context the cuss word is used in. Let's take the word Satan, for example. Is saying "We must not believe Satan" bad, because you said the word Satan? No! But it IS bad if you said "Satan is a good person". It's the same with cuss words. How is saying "You're fucking awesome!" Bad? You're complimenting someone! All in all, cuss words are the same as other words, but just more extreme and offensive to some people. Whether they are 'bad' or not, however, depends on the context they are used in

      I agree with you. People in the church and the society have not recognized that some words are absolutely wrong and how to differentiate what society tries to play off as appropriate based on context. The "f" word is one of the largest examples. Christians who keep their mind on God can easily see this.
      There are good words that can be made bad as well.
      If people will always remember and think of Jesus is beside them, and if they come to terms and say that they would communicate with Jesus with the "f" word or think Jesus would use the "f" word, then mi no tink mi an dem a read di same Bible at all at all.

    OK so saying "shit" when something doesn't go your way isn't against the bible, calling someone a "badass" is actually bringing them up, and saying "fuck" when surprised or angry is the same is saying "wow" or "dang it". "Swear words" or "cuss words" are words with meaning just like every other word in the dictionary. They're just stronger, more harsh, and offensive. I honestly don't understand why people ever considered this a sin. If used offensively for insulting etc. then yes it is a sin but when used in some cases, it doesn't violate any law in the bible. It's about how you use the word that makes it a sin or not. Not the word directly.
    I don't use the words all too often and I don't use them when talking to someone I know isn't Christian because it isn't Christian-like speech. (according yo the social norms) But I'm not going to lie to you and say that I don't swear on a daily basis. I do it when talking to a select group of friends quite often but only to describe things or when I'm surprised. I don't use it to offend people or sin at all.
    Remember to do your research before you start running your mouth and claim things are sin when you have no biblical proof. Don't just go with whatever the crowd says. Do the research yourself. From what I've researched, swearing in a lot of cases, isn't a sin
    Nevertheless great video!!!

      just wanted to challenge you on what you said. But how is swearing building or edifying to anyone? why would you want to be offensive and harsh? and you mentioned that he didnt do his research, but he quoted tons of verses including the one about giving an account to Jesus for every word we say? so if you believe in all that then how come you still swear?

    • @ContraRoma

      Regardless if it's a sin or not, why use those words? Isn't there better words to use in the vocabulary than those? I always think, if you have to resort to using cuss words, then you struggle with a weak vocabulary. We represent our King as Christians, and why should we be like this filthy world with filthy words? I'm not saying that you will go to hell for cussing but I'm begging the question as to why should we resort to those words rather than choosing better ones.
      P.S. I use to cuss like a sailor so I understand the struggle, been there, done that.

      ***** I didn't mean HE SPECIFICALLY I just meant that like in general people do that. Not everything people say is to build up. Jesus told Judas that it'd be better if he were never alive. Doesn't sound like much building up to me. Jesus also made a lot of just general statements like we always do. Sometimes I swear when making general statements. "What the fuck?", "Holy shit!!!" or "Damn that really hurt" are just general statements/questions I could see myself saying. I don't want to be offensive or harsh and I don't use those words in that way either. (Btw I actually barely cuss I just don't see the problem)

      +Paul Uponi So true how you say something makes it a curse word not the word you the only reason we say shit is a bad word is because our parents teach us it is and because society looks differently to it but saying its on my butt or its on my ass absolutely no different

  • @ContraRoma
    @ContraRoma 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There's so much spiritual power that comes into the words we say. There's a reason why curse words are called curse words. When you are a busybody, speaking bad things, and throwing curse words at someone, you lay upon them a spiritual bondage. Basically using curse words or speaking bad about others is a subtle form of witchcraft. The Bible says in Ephesians 6 that we are in a spiritual battle therefore put on your spiritual minds in Christ Jesus. I think Jeffery hit the point home in this video. Thanks!

      From my understanding (I'm assuming you've figured this out by now lol) that's fine. While its unneccessary and could lead to using it as a curse, it's not vile or a sin in anyway. Just as saying the f word during sex wouldn't be a sin. From my understanding, its only a sin if you're cursing someone with it, or letting it take over your life. In brief:
    You can swear/cuss, but don't do it to someone or as anything offensive.
    Btw, swearing isn't really cool, so I see why many adults think that we are cursing which int true(I don't think I phrased that right)
    Words are words, nothing is good or bad..
    But I need to agree that it's better to use better vocabulary to replace those words(don't worry, you won't be bullied or called weird, tell them to mind their business😑)
    Just dont do it wrong, fight, offend 😒
    This is my opinion, not a fact.

    I think what's most important is how people view the words. Cussing like f*** has no intrinsic wrong meaning but people have placed a hurtful meaning to the word so if a Christian does cuss they have a bad view of the Christian and ultimately God. So yes, cussing is a sin because it reflects God badly.

That is the key for our salvation. You can try as hard as you can to not say wrong things, think wrong doings, or do wrong, but you can never be perfect, you alone will always fail. I feel the video lacks casual usage perspective of "swearing" My stance has always been is conversation curse words are literally just another word If i were to say my butt hurts today is exactly the same as if I said my a## hurts today the only reason we put such negative ungodly meaning to these words is just because our parents teach us they are "bad" words. It all has to do with how you say something not what you say. Kind of like Jeff says if you are saying it to put someone down its sinful but they aren't limited to the few "curse" words they are any words. Anyone disagree?

    As Christians we must make sure that everything that comes out of our mouth is helpful and beneficial to help others. They way I look at it is that our mouths can built or destroy, it can corrupt our entire body and testimony. We're all created in the image of God, we're our father's representative, and it's almost impossible to bring glory to God when what comes out of our mouth is foul words.

    Okay let me first say this. "swear" is not a curse word. "swear" in the bible means a vow or a oath or a promise. vain babbling is considered cussing or inconvenient talk, foolishness jesting. James chapter 5 states not to "swear" hope to die stick a needle in my eye" brings condemnation. Jews used to have to swear to get people to believe them. if you swear by the Temple it was unbinding. if You swear to GOD then it was binding. James states say yes or no only cause your word is enough. be a person of integrity.

I feel sometimes swearing is appropriate. its apart of who I am. I'm not a bad guy. I don't talk about people, judge people and I'm treat everyone as if they are special no matter who they are. BUT I didn't get this from Christianity. and I guess as a I, in a way represent Jesus' followers. but to be honest I don't feel like I do. When people tell me really nice things about me I don't straight up say its because I'm a Christian. its because I build my foundation on love. love is all I look to give. • @Stephen2.0
      @Stephen2.0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I wouldn't ever swear to deliberately hurt anyone. you're right its all said jokingly, but like what Jeff said about corruption coming out from the mouth. I wouldn't (I don't think anyone would really?) swear to an innocent child, or around them, why? well, because they have innocents, and if swearing is corrupt, that would mean I would be spoiling that innocents. so swearing is corrupt? which is wrong ? its a difficult one..

    • @LightningSonic
      @LightningSonic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Stephen Butler Stephen, don't believe people who tell you cussing is not sinning. Using the f or s words can damn our souls straight to hell. There's a simple test to determine whether or not something is a sin: Would you do said thing in front of little children without being ashamed? Then, consider the fact that Jesus said: "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3)
      Another test is to ask yourself: "Would Jesus or any of the Apostles do this act?"
      The obvious answer to the question of whether or not using curse/cuss words is a sin is a BIG FAT YES!
      It has the potential of dragging us straight to hell. So we must repent and live holy.

    • @LightningSonic
      @LightningSonic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Noted. Rereading my original comment, I notice intensity and possible inaccuracy/untruthfulness in my comment. The only verse from Scripture that could possibly back up my written opinion above is James 1:26 and Matthew 5:22.
      _If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this person's religion is worthless._ (James 1:26)
      Then there's Ephesians 4:29,
      _Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear._
      In Matthew 5:22 and 15:11 Jesus speaks on the issue also.
      Surely cursing is sinning. Can it drag a Christian to hell? I think it's possible, at least if it's directed at a fellow brother:
      _But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire._ (Matthew 5:22)
      Thanks for your response and time.
      God help us and sanctify us all.
      God bless

    This is a very strong conviction to have as not everybody thinks like this, especially Christians. Most times they just religiously say a particular word is just the "devil's word", when in fact it's about how a word is used; to build up or to be destructive.
    One does not have to say a swear word in order to be destructive with their speech and vice versa. If someone isn't confortable with you using particular words then don't use it. Be mindful of your audience

    Colossians 3:8 "But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth."
    You can pick and choose and itemize what you THINK is a bad word or not and justify it all you want to(including Jefferson), but the underlying issue is, what is the root cause of you questioning the scripture in the first place?
    Is the Word not absolute? Or are you not absolute in your belief of it?
    All of the comments around here scream more of people trying to justify their human actions in obvious conflict with God's word, than following Gods word to correct/overcome their human fleshly nature.
    It's dangerous, as a Christian, to chase context as a justification for your "modern beliefs." Anything can be excused with context. If you follow that logic, then where do you draw the line? Is everything going to fall into moral relativism? Each person's morality is their own interpretation? Why is there even a need for the God of the Bible at all, if you're only going to adjust the rules to make yourself feel better?
    This can tread dangerously into the "do what thou wilt" mantra. If you don't already know, one can Google where that phrase comes from, and the god that refers to. Not the God of the Bible.
    You're making God fit into your life, than you fit into God's word.
    If that point doesn't make sense to you, then the rest of this is just useless debate.
    Tats, included.(not just swearing).
    2Timothy 4:3-4 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
    4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."

    • @GamingandFrightened
      @GamingandFrightened 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure who that is. Anyway, on to your question. Not everything falls under moral relativism. But this isn’t even a case of that. What people who say cussing is wrong are doing is placing a moral context to some words and not others. (despite whatever the sentence context is) Without context these words mean nothing…this is how language works. Context is vital for language.
      If you say Shit or replace it with Shoot you are saying the exact same thing because the context of the language remains the same. You can’t have words without context. You can’t use an emphasizer (which is what words like shit or shoot or darn are) with a meaning if it has no sentence to pull from to obtain that meaning)
      This is where your question is in error…you asked if each person’s mortality is their own interpretation…but that’s not what this is about. It’s about how language works. Context is a part of language structure…if you take out context you have NO language. What are words? They are sounds we make until they are given meaning…what is meaning? Meaning is given from context. This is how language works.

    Christian or not, I don't like swearing and I don't like to hear other people swear because A. it's not how I was raised B. it's not necessary in any way, shape or form. Those who say "I only do it when it's needed" I strongly disagree because there are many and I mean MANY other words you could use in the moment. And C. it, in my eyes, just makes you look that much more inappropriate, ignorant, and childish. Take what you will from that and have a nice day :)

    • @GamingandFrightened
      @GamingandFrightened 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually...cussing is necessary. If emphasizers (which is what cuss words are) were not needed in language we wouldn't try to make up alternative words to replace those other words.

    • @candicehoneycutt4318
      @candicehoneycutt4318 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How exactly is cursing ignorant and childish? Personally, I like my sentence enhancers.

    • @emberguard5009
      @emberguard5009 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cussing isn't necessary. It's essentially a misuse of the words. You only think it's necessary because that's how you've learnt to speak. I wasn't brought up that way and I do fine without swearing. It's only when I've been in a environment where swearing is more frequent that I've found myself being more inclined to want to use those words or alternatives for those words, but that doesn't make it necessary or right.
      I have yet to see a sentence with the F word or with a equivalent word that actually needed the swear word. You don't need to emphasize something through swearing anymore then you need to buy the latest iphone. You can use your voice to emphasize, you can use language without misusing words to emphasize. Perhaps repeat a word. You don't /have/ to swear.

    • @GamingandFrightened
      @GamingandFrightened 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually cussing is a natural part of language. It's why people use "darn" or "shoot" because language needs emphasis. The only difference between "Darn" and "fuck" is your cultural upbringing. The words themselves are neither good or bad. They are just words society arbitrarily decided were "bad" And that changes over time.

    • @candicehoneycutt4318
      @candicehoneycutt4318 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Emberguard No, you don't have to swear. It's a choice, and certainly not a misuse.
      The fun thing about English is that we have all kinds of things to emphasize what we're saying. A pause before the word, the pitch, the amount of stress you put on it, a synonym before, etc. You only think those words are bad because that's what you've learned from society, see how that works?
      Adding a curse word to a sentence gives it a little extra oomph. It may not be necessary, but that "shit" is like paprika for your sentences. Just a little extra flavor that's all

      If you're amongst those that are used to that kind of language then it probably would. But as someone who isn't used to that it would have the opposite effect.
      The majority of the time when the F word is used if you took it out of the sentence it'd still be a coherent sentence. It's rarely adding any new info and there are plenty of other ways to add emphasis if that's what you want.

    Swearing is a sin. It is a black and white. When someone cusses they dont do so with good feeling but bad ones.

      Not necessarily. When you stub your toe, what you say is in pain. When you need to emphasize something in their argument, that isn't a bad feeling, even if a better word could've been used.

      I also believe 100% that cussing/swearing in any manner is a sin.

      Sin is as real a concept as the air you breathe. Mirander Black Sin is all around us and everyone innately knows this because God's moral law is written in all of our hearts.

    CUSSING IS SINNING. If you feel convicted while cussing around little kids it's a sin. Check out what Jesus had to say in Matthew 18:3.
    and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven._
