@@jessicapeyton5444 usually you can tell but if its not immediately obvious you calm them down the best you can and send officers if they're in immediate danger. occasionally they will call from mental hospitals and the dispatcher will contact the facility to inform them of the situation. (my mom has been a dispatcher for over 20 years and ive talked to her at length about her job because i was considering it for a long time as a career)
LITTLE STORY: My mom used to be a 911 dispatcher and once she received the first call for a bridge that collapsed in the city. She called a construction company so that they could remove the part of the road that fell and find survivors. The guy on the phone told her they didnt have any (forgot the word) left so when she asked for another company's number (it was in the 90's google didnt exist yet) and the guy told her he couldnt give her another number cuz of the competition. After arguing, the guy agreed to giveit to her... That shows a lot about society, where business comes before people's lives. btw im not a native english speaker so my english is kinda funny

Queenie they just explained that I had called and they told me who they were and stuff and to call back if it was an emergency since they heard screaming. But if they were able to see my location at all they would’ve saw I was at an amusement park.
I wished I would have known the lady who answered my call when I tried to commit suicide. She was one of the biggest blessings of that night as well as the women who picked me up in the ambulance, they were wonderful and really supported me in my darkest time. They truly do deserve praise.
TW: death, heart attack I had a similar experience when my dad had a heart attack and died at home, me and my brothers were home and my mom had to rush home from work. I'm not sure if she played any role before coming to our house but this woman (I don't know what her job title was) came along with the other first responders, and the way she comforted us as we were bawling our eyes out, drove us to my mom's friend's place for the night and all that. For how traumatic it was for us she really did everything right to make the best of that situation. Really gave me a ton of respect for the people who deal with these situations on the daily. Funny thing too, years later I took a psychology course and she was the prof for it, really good teacher.
Imagine answering a call from someone who wants to commit suicide and not being able to stop that person... This job is incredibly hard! I really admire these people
They talk to them for a while and try to convince them not to commit suicide, that or they talk to them for a while and try to take their mind away from the topic until an officer arrives at their house so they can handle the situation in a calmly manner.
So basically what I’m hearing is ... the dispatchers get more training and are held to a higher standard than the officers who are given guns and also sometimes have to give medical attention to people in the field👀... (also I love that he decided to have a episode focused on these first responders, they do so much for people. Thank you !!!)

When I was in 5th grade, my class went to the local police department and we went into the room with the dispatcher and as we walked in there, they got called for a car flipping over on a highway nearby. The dispatchers were looking at the 8 to 10 screens they have and focusing and I was so confused how they could do it, because they were so calm to be answering stuff like that. I want to say, to all dispatchers out there, you deserve so much more recognition for what you do. Keep staying strong like you are

Yes there's so much misinformation about OCD. The amount of people who say "I'm so ocd my house is spotless" like yes some people with OCD compulsively clean but just because your tidy you do not have OCD .. my son has ocd and people say oh at least his room is tidy. Like no, just no..
Oh my god yes! I myself have the disorder (not severe at all so for me it’s pretty easy to cope with) and the amount of misinformation that his spread of the media pisses me off
Agreed. Same with me. People often think OCD is only being a perfectionist and washing hands over and over again. But there is so much more to this mental illness. I hate it when my friends say they have OCD because they check twice whether they closed the door or not.
One of my sisters friends was a dispatcher and got a call from her own house about her brother who committed suicide.... imagine how horrid that would be
My brother committed suicide too. I can't imagine finding out that way. I was the first so find out but I left for work shortly after to get it off my mind. I was fortunate that I didn't have to hear my mom's screams when my dad told her because I was at work. If I had, I don't think I could handle it.
This is one job I don’t think I could ever do. I can’t imagine being on the other side of the phone hearing screams and not being able to physically be there to help 😭 Therapy should be offered and shouldn’t be frowned upon. It’s so important to express your emotions and not suppress them ;~;
I’ve been doing dispatching for almost two years and just recently started therapy. I think it’s important to get the stigma off of therapy in general. ♥️
As a former EMT who took 14 years to admit I needed help with my PTSD, it broke my heart to hear how these dispatchers are treaded. They are our guardian angels and should be respected as such!
First thing I’d suggest for Anthony’s parenting is that he changes his home. I think having Marshall live on Marshall way made him think he’s in charge
I’m so happy you covered this topic. My dad is a retiring firefighter of 21 years who frequently was a 911 dispatcher. I was so young at the time that I didn’t understand the weight of people’s lives potentially being at stake and how emotionally taxing it must have been for him. Thanks for bringing these unsung heroes to light.
@@jimmycodmw2 Such is the struggle of journalistic endeavours. how much of the hosts personalities *should* be interwoven in the fabric of the work? I think the input Anthony brings adds more value, just by actually having less linear conversations with people and being an interesting and charismatic person himself. If you don't feel that way, I'm sure you can find other, more dull interviews with each type of people/ group Anthony has interviewed. But it probably won't be as engaging, funny, or insightful as his version of those interviews are, so good luck.

I remember when I was little my mom worked for the 911 dispatch for a while and I remember her coming home sometimes crying her eyes out and holding me and my siblings. It's a tough job and I'll always appreciate the people doing this because it's really mentally draining. So thanks for bringing awareness to this!

As a person who calls 911 often for my kid’s weird seizures, I love that they are always there for me. Even after the fact that the first responders get there, they always ask me is they want to stay there longer after the fact, I 100% appreciate them being there for me.
They are literally, *literally* the definition of first responders. I applied for a dispatcher at a huge, popular State University. Passed the tests and simulations, went through 3 rounds of interviews and was offered the position. I realized that as much as I love helping, and was suited for the role in many ways....it would have been too detrimental to my emotional well-being. I still think about that job and wonder if I should have tried.
I feel like that's something that drastically needs change. Many people are probably affected by this in a negative way. Officers and the people they interact with (the mental state of the officer can cause bad reactions). It's kind of like in the past quite some plane crashes used to happen because it was frowned upon to challenge your captains opinion as a first officer or other flight crew.
At this point the whole pizza thing shouldn't be a thing of "having a code" imo, just them picking up on someone OBVIOUSLY not accidentally dialing 911 instead of a fakin pizza place...
I’m a dispatcher and you’d be surprised or asking for the number, I’ve had a lady call me thinking I was Macy’s customer service.... But as they stated you can tell in voices if something just isn’t right. Also they are trying to get texting to 911 centers, so once that starts it’ll be a game changer for sure.
My boyfriend is a prison officer, and that could be a really good topic to touch on. He broke down at least once a week, came home with bruises and cuts. He also put out fires, riots and talked people down from all sorts of traumatic experiences. I think there's a lot more than people think when it comes to prison officers. Love the videos :)
@@catttyun There are many misconception about many things, people keep forgetting they are all humans at the end. Police Officer, Prison Officer even the "enemy" in a war, they are all humans who probably have family, wifes and children back home, but specially in the army they are basically forced to not think about it or they couldn't do their job. Which is sad, but understandable. But about the police? I will never understand the dehumanization treatment some gave them.

People used to actually called it 9 11 when it was first made, and alot of people died when in housefires because they we're stressed and not thinking straight and they were actually looking for the number 11.
Nomm 14 nope. 911 was chosen because it was short and easy to remember. plus, it was a number sequence that had never been designated for an office code, area code or service code. so like they basically wanted a unique number that was easy to remember

kristin has this air of professionalism and being very experienced (as expected since she's worked 20 yrs) while melissa kind of has a mom feel the type that'll call u sweetie, she's like very calm and soothing but overall i love both their of energy! theyre really strong and amazing women i cant imagine how difficult and stressful their job can be

It sucks, I try to go to sleep at 9:30 (yes ik it’s early) and don’t get to sleep until 3 am. Every single night. Oh, and I get nightmares all the time too. So no sleep for me.
I know someone who called the emergency line. Then after they gave their address. The dispatcher took 10 minutes to finally say "How do you spell that, I don't think it's a real place". In the end the victim found someone who could drive them to the hospital. Then the dispatcher in question was fired after an investigation.
I appreciate so much seeing my profession presented here. 911 dispatching is SO much more than secretarial work. I'm lucky enough to live in Texas where, quite recently, we were finally recognized as first responders. I truly hope the rest of the US follows suit. The ladies spoke of what we do and there's so much more involved that they weren't able to touch base on here. Unlike Kristin, I do more than police. I dispatch for police, fire, and EMS. There is so much we listen to at once and we must put that into a certain priority of response in a moment's notice. I also wanted to comment about getting calls from a car break-in to a parent calling because they can't control their children are so true! I can't tell you how many times a week we get those types of calls. It just baffles me! That made me cackle to see how many similar things we deal with on a daily basis!
@@Bellachris75 largely depends on the policies of the police department but typically the call doesn't even get entered or if it does get entered likely not dispatched. Only exception for my area is if the child is commiting a crime (assault, destruction of property etc) There are alot of people who call 911 for things that are not police issues. I think some people wish to absolve themselves of responsibility to be honest. Hard to tell sometimes.
SherbertLime the 911 dispatcher I called stayed on the phone with me and walked me through CPR the entire time, counting with me and staying on the phone until the emt’s stepped through my door. Seriously you guys are amazing thank you so much for everything you do!!
@@christie8493 Thank you! I would love to be able to do that. My agency is quite small so they don't allow us to become certified for that type of dispatching. Rest assured though it's because the response time is typically 3-5 minutes anywhere in the city. I plan to move to a bigger agency so I can become both medical and fire certified dispatch. Having those type of certifications under our belts greatly enhances our ability to assist callers whenever there's an emergency happening, much like the dispatcher who helped you. I'm so glad you had such a wonderful dispatcher help you through such a trying event.

Vicarious trauma is a real danger for profession that deal with other peoples trauma, like 911 dispatchers, nurses and doctors, counsellor and many more. Self care and reflection is so so important to ensure that the caretaker is in the right place to actually help others. Burnout and depression are such a risk for professions like this if they don’t take care of themselves. It should be mandatory for all people who work with others people traumas to go to their own therapy sessions to work through the things they are exposed to.
This was such a sweet episode! In Czechia there's an app called Záchranka (Ambulance) through which you can call emergency services, you can also preset your name, medicine you take, age, weight, your close people's phone numbers etc. When calling, the dispatcher sees your exact location, your preset info and there are buttons for "Can't talk" and "Mountain rescue service", which makes the process of calling a dispatcher much easier. There are also first aid tips for various scenarios like bleeding, choking but also electricity shock, unconsciousness etc. The language can be changed to English and German so some people outside of Czechia might find it useful as well! Stay safe folks :)
When she said “over time you just kinda put it behind you” It’s so sad because a career path like this or like the medial field you are eventually numbed out by everything you hear or see. BUT, it’s for the better of our personal mental health because some stuff you see or hear can truly scar someone for a while and it helps them move on and continue doing their job to help others.
just found this, thank you for doing this...im a 911 dispatcher in texas, the first to become first responders! and they are absolutely right. the job is nothing like you see on tv (though i do like the show 9-1-1, lol) i've been doing this job for 10 years now. we have a quiet room too, with a reclining chair, massage chair, and sofa to relax at. we just got those things a few years ago though
The dispatcher I got when I called 911 after my sister’s suicide attempt was amazing. She stayed in with me and was so gentle and reassuring while I fell apart. They do amazing work.

I worked for FEMA during Hurricane Ida. Hearing people cry, scream and despair for 12 hours, 7 days a week was so mentally draining my depression resurfaced with all the strength in the world and I had to be institutionalized. I can't even imagine how these calls are.

My god mother used to be a 911 dispatcher before she retired and I have so much respect for her. While she never talks about the kind of calls she received, I can imagine that not all of them were pranks, butt dials, or your typical bar fight. It's a job that's not for the faint of heart. I also had to call 911 before unfortunately and the dispatcher was seriously such a sweetheart and really helped keep me calm and talking. All the love to the dispatchers out there
Actually, I don’t know for how many countries this is true but I am from Germany and I know in the Netherlands it’s the same: dialing the number 911 actually works because American movies are so popular that in an emergency situation it can be the only thing that comes to mind and not Germany’s emergency number. Apparently they activated it at some point and found out that a lot of people call it. So it’s kind of Universal just not to the dispatchers in America.
@@kazbekki It still isn't universal just because another few countries use the same number. In the UK it is 999 or 111 for lesser emergencies and in Italy there are a bunch of different numbers depending on what you need: 112, 113 for police, 118 for ambulance and 115 for firefighters
I was the one who called 911 when my fiance tried to kill himself. I was screaming about "he's trying to kill himself he's got a gun please send someone I don't know if he's still alive." Two of my friends were in the house with him and the gun kept jamming but he was putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger over and over. I couldn't imagine what that operator was feeling considering how all of us felt while we were there.

They talk to them for a while and try to convince them not to commit suicide, that or they talk to them for a while and try to take their mind away from the topic until an officer arrives at their house so they can handle the situation in a calmly manner.
So basically what I’m hearing is ... the dispatchers get more training and are held to a higher standard than the officers who are given guns and also sometimes have to give medical attention to people in the field👀... (also I love that he decided to have a episode focused on these first responders, they do so much for people. Thank you !!!)

When I was in 5th grade, my class went to the local police department and we went into the room with the dispatcher and as we walked in there, they got called for a car flipping over on a highway nearby. The dispatchers were looking at the 8 to 10 screens they have and focusing and I was so confused how they could do it, because they were so calm to be answering stuff like that. I want to say, to all dispatchers out there, you deserve so much more recognition for what you do. Keep staying strong like you are

One of my sisters friends was a dispatcher and got a call from her own house about her brother who committed suicide.... imagine how horrid that would be
My brother committed suicide too. I can't imagine finding out that way. I was the first so find out but I left for work shortly after to get it off my mind. I was fortunate that I didn't have to hear my mom's screams when my dad told her because I was at work. If I had, I don't think I could handle it.

I’m so happy you covered this topic. My dad is a retiring firefighter of 21 years who frequently was a 911 dispatcher. I was so young at the time that I didn’t understand the weight of people’s lives potentially being at stake and how emotionally taxing it must have been for him. Thanks for bringing these unsung heroes to light.

As a person who calls 911 often for my kid’s weird seizures, I love that they are always there for me. Even after the fact that the first responders get there, they always ask me is they want to stay there longer after the fact, I 100% appreciate them being there for me.

I applied for a dispatcher at a huge, popular State University. Passed the tests and simulations, went through 3 rounds of interviews and was offered the position. I realized that as much as I love helping, and was suited for the role in many ways....it would have been too detrimental to my emotional well-being. I still think about that job and wonder if I should have tried.

I feel like that's something that drastically needs change. Many people are probably affected by this in a negative way. Officers and the people they interact with (the mental state of the officer can cause bad reactions). It's kind of like in the past quite some plane crashes used to happen because it was frowned upon to challenge your captains opinion as a first officer or other flight crew.

I’m a dispatcher and you’d be surprised or asking for the number, I’ve had a lady call me thinking I was Macy’s customer service.... But as they stated you can tell in voices if something just isn’t right. Also they are trying to get texting to 911 centers, so once that starts it’ll be a game changer for sure.

When I was younger I thought the suicide hotline was a phone number to ask how to commit suicide.
My boyfriend is a prison officer, and that could be a really good topic to touch on. He broke down at least once a week, came home with bruises and cuts. He also put out fires, riots and talked people down from all sorts of traumatic experiences. I think there's a lot more than people think when it comes to prison officers. Love the videos :)

Police Officer, Prison Officer even the "enemy" in a war, they are all humans who probably have family, wifes and children back home, but specially in the army they are basically forced to not think about it or they couldn't do their job.

I know someone who called the emergency line. Then after they gave their address. The dispatcher took 10 minutes to finally say "How do you spell that, I don't think it's a real place".
In the end the victim found someone who could drive them to the hospital. Then the dispatcher in question was fired after an investigation.

I appreciate so much seeing my profession presented here. 911 dispatching is SO much more than secretarial work. I'm lucky enough to live in Texas where, quite recently, we were finally recognized as first responders. I truly hope the rest of the US follows suit. The ladies spoke of what we do and there's so much more involved that they weren't able to touch base on here. Unlike Kristin, I do more than police. I dispatch for police, fire, and EMS. There is so much we listen to at once and we must put that into a certain priority of response in a moment's notice.
I also wanted to comment about getting calls from a car break-in to a parent calling because they can't control their children are so true! I can't tell you how many times a week we get those types of calls. It just baffles me! That made me cackle to see how many similar things we deal with on a daily basis!

@@Bellachris75 largely depends on the policies of the police department but typically the call doesn't even get entered or if it does get entered likely not dispatched. Only exception for my area is if the child is commiting a crime (assault, destruction of property etc)
There are alot of people who call 911 for things that are not police issues. I think some people wish to absolve themselves of responsibility to be honest. Hard to tell sometimes.
SherbertLime the 911 dispatcher I called stayed on the phone with me and walked me through CPR the entire time, counting with me and staying on the phone until the emt’s stepped through my door. Seriously you guys are amazing thank you so much for everything you do!!
@@christie8493 Thank you! I would love to be able to do that. My agency is quite small so they don't allow us to become certified for that type of dispatching. Rest assured though it's because the response time is typically 3-5 minutes anywhere in the city. I plan to move to a bigger agency so I can become both medical and fire certified dispatch. Having those type of certifications under our belts greatly enhances our ability to assist callers whenever there's an emergency happening, much like the dispatcher who helped you. I'm so glad you had such a wonderful dispatcher help you through such a trying event.
Thank you for making this video and enlightening people on the job. I'm a dispatcher and I find it very rewarding, not to say there aren't days I go home crying. It is a very hard and demanding job.

Vicarious trauma is a real danger for profession that deal with other peoples trauma, like 911 dispatchers, nurses and doctors, counsellor and many more. Self care and reflection is so so important to ensure that the caretaker is in the right place to actually help others. Burnout and depression are such a risk for professions like this if they don’t take care of themselves. It should be mandatory for all people who work with others people traumas to go to their own therapy sessions to work through the things they are exposed to.
I love Anthony. This series is honestly the best entertainment TH-cam has to offer.

In Czechia there's an app called Záchranka (Ambulance) through which you can call emergency services, you can also preset your name, medicine you take, age, weight, your close people's phone numbers etc. When calling, the dispatcher sees your exact location, your preset info and there are buttons for "Can't talk" and "Mountain rescue service", which makes the process of calling a dispatcher much easier. There are also first aid tips for various scenarios like bleeding, choking but also electricity shock, unconsciousness etc.
The language can be changed to English and German so some people outside of Czechia might find it useful as well!

just found this, thank you for doing this...im a 911 dispatcher in texas, the first to become first responders! and they are absolutely right. the job is nothing like you see on tv (though i do like the show 9-1-1, lol) i've been doing this job for 10 years now. we have a quiet room too, with a reclining chair, massage chair, and sofa to relax at. we just got those things a few years ago though
The dispatcher I got when I called 911 after my sister’s suicide attempt was amazing. She stayed in with me and was so gentle and reassuring while I fell apart. They do amazing work.

There are some interesting ones, you tend to forget those though and mostly just remember the really bad ones.

I worked for FEMA during Hurricane Ida. Hearing people cry, scream and despair for 12 hours, 7 days a week was so mentally draining my depression resurfaced with all the strength in the world and I had to be institutionalized. I can't even imagine how these calls are.
"You could never forget the screams you hear." That hit hard. It takes an amazing person to stay calm and handle this and help people and sometimes they are beyond help. Thank you for doing what you do Anthony to bring light to this subject i would have never thought twice about💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
These women have hard jobs. I can’t imagine what they are going through. My aunt committed suicide two years ago and the dispatchers were amazing. Thank you for putting these ladies on your channel, they deserve more recognition!
My god mother used to be a 911 dispatcher before she retired and I have so much respect for her. While she never talks about the kind of calls she received, I can imagine that not all of them were pranks, butt dials, or your typical bar fight. It's a job that's not for the faint of heart. I also had to call 911 before unfortunately and the dispatcher was seriously such a sweetheart and really helped keep me calm and talking. All the love to the dispatchers out there

Actually, I don’t know for how many countries this is true but I am from Germany and I know in the Netherlands it’s the same: dialing the number 911 actually works because American movies are so popular that in an emergency situation it can be the only thing that comes to mind and not Germany’s emergency number. Apparently they activated it at some point and found out that a lot of people call it. So it’s kind of Universal just not to the dispatchers in America.
@@kazbekki It still isn't universal just because another few countries use the same number. In the UK it is 999 or 111 for lesser emergencies and in Italy there are a bunch of different numbers depending on what you need: 112, 113 for police, 118 for ambulance and 115 for firefighters

I’m not from the U.S. but I’m incredibly thankful for these ladies!! Along with ALL emergency dispatchers across the world!
I was the one who called 911 when my fiance tried to kill himself. I was screaming about "he's trying to kill himself he's got a gun please send someone I don't know if he's still alive." Two of my friends were in the house with him and the gun kept jamming but he was putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger over and over. I couldn't imagine what that operator was feeling considering how all of us felt while we were there.

i mean, i'm not a non-american so I'm not sure i'm qualified to answer, but i do know that if i'm reading like an article or something and it will randomly throw in this fact or statistic or whatever that's specific to like the UK and then just continue on like nothing happened, i'll be like, "that's not very helpful" 😂 so i can only imagine that's what it's like for you
