The paint snobs are amusing. Someone with your eye for colour and skill could make a piece using wax crayons look good. The cheaper you can buy your paint, the more paintings you can create and hey, it's all about creating something beautiful in the end.
It's rare to see some one render a work so fearlessly. A great pleasure to watch!
Always amazing how this comes together. All paintings go through the muddy phase, but everytime I think HOW is he going to make it work here. Then at the end it magically appears out of the paint. Great work!
I really like how your gestures are quick and to the point, and also, your genuine appreciation of nature while on locations . Montana is pretty special, too.

The great thing is that oil paints in general have very great lightfastness, regardless of its "student grade" quality.

Man, how you enjoyed painting that one. Your enthusiasm and love for your craft surely gets passed on to anyone who watches your videos, it does to me anyway. Thank you for sharing. Your comments on paints and other artist materials are most appropriate, there is plenty of good quality paints and materials around now without spending a fortune . I started painting 60 years ago, there was no choice then, just Artist or Student quality paints and the difference was considerable. Brushes were incredibly expensive. Alternatively it was said, 'you never have to worry about wearing a cheap brush out, the bristles will fall out as soon as you start to use it, you will never wear it out'.

Since almost all paint manufactures are using the same binding oil, the only real difference is "pure pigments." For most of the more common pigments the cheap brands are also using "pure pigments," especially when they are cheap or in demand. eg lamp black is pure carbon (cheap) and true cobalt is in such demand that everyone keeps it. EXCEPTIONS: Some of the turqouses, blues, reds, oranges and yellows that are uncomon/expencive...cheap brands have colors that mimic some of the colors out of the tube, but loose vibrancy when mixed or differ in transparency. The only way to know is looking at the color code. Depending on your painting style and kind of painting your doing these subtle qualities might be really important. Generally, differences seem to go away the thicker one paints. Congrats on finding a niche and working it! Really enjoying watching you paint.

I absolutely love your intro on the paints you use. I have to admit, I was always looking for more expensive paints, because subconsciously I believed, or I was hoping, it would make me a better painter. Anyway, I have immediately felt in love with your style and you are a great inspiration to me. Thank you sharing your videos and I would love to see more - how to videos from you on how you mix the paint, etc. I believe you would be able to explain the basics very well.

I think there is truth in the quote which you quoted ("Buy the best products that you can afford") as well as in what you said. Because the part "that you can afford" could mean that you are actually not able or willing to spend too much. And one could add "and which suit your needs". :-)
of course everyone has their own thoughts. For wealthy folks learning to paint, I see no reason in them buying the finest quality paint, as I've seen happen many many times

Don't let the paint snobs get to you EVER! I no a woman who buys the expensive oil paints, she buys the most expensive canvases and brushes, and her husband built her an art studio separate from the house that has heat and air conditioning in it, and she sucks at painting. LOL art has nothing to do with the paints we use! Jackson Pollock used house paints. 😎 Andy Warhol used acrylic paints and for some of his paintings instead of using water on the surface, he pissed on them. LOL your paintings are beautiful, Turner! Keep doing what you're doing and don't listen to the art snobs. ❤️

I 100% agree with the paint thing. I started out with the cheapest I could find. I wanted to know if I even liked it at all and I’m so glad I did. Because as a learner, I would hate to “waste” expensive paint on a bad painting or just learning to blend colors and whatnot. And it goes for brushes and panels and easels. All of it. Try it out first with something cheap but usable and go from there.

Turner, you are so right on the paint. I tried an expensive brand and was just too stingy with the amount. Thanks for the recommendation on paint brands. I just bought a stock of Blick.

I agree, Turner. There is no reason to let people shame you into spending more money on supplies than you need to. There is an English painter, Alwyn Crenshaw, (I think that's how he spells his name), somewhere in his 70s maybe, only paints with student grade paints. Works for him just like yours work for you. I use a "lesser quality, student grade paint". Works for me. Keep painting, be safe.

Your philosophy regarding paint quality and cost is correct. Generally the artist is mixing grays so that beautiful color straight from the tube is a waste especially for beginner and intermediate artists.
You’re blessed with an eye for color and surrounded by absolutely gorgeous landscapes! A lot of us should buy less expensive paint, including me!

There are a lot of artist snobs out there. Some wouldn't even think of using cheap brushes. I'd like to know who could tell if you used a $1 brush or a $80 one? Or the paint for that matter. I've quit watching certain artists on YT because they just annoy me this way. Besides I can't used oil. But I watch oil painters because you lot fascinate me. I love what you say about what you should focus on (learning to paint, draw, values, color mixing) and not spending all your money on the most expensive materials and gear, in the end if you understand how to paint poetry on canvas it won't matter what you use (Ex: Van Gogh)

Do your pieces sell after youre done with your adventure? I love the mess making out in the wild with little restraint to detail. Livin the life. I just worry that I would have large canvases piling up.

The technique you use to put in trunks is helpful to me. I'm going to try! Holding brush upper midway and giving a long stroke....allows more control! Cool!

Ya on the paint I use mostly Golden artist quality and occasional cheaper white. I do use quality gesso as the cheap stuff is horrible to blend with. Recently, I stopped using gesso as a paint and just use white. Gesso artist quality is a must though... the other quality is just horrible. All the best.
I have a French easelThat I bought brand new for $50 there is a painter on TH-cam it keeps telling me that if I don’t have a Julian and it’s a piece of crap and it will break I’ve had my French easel for 30 years and it’s never broken And I love the van Gogh paints I love the Soho paints I love the Masters touch paints they all work very well for what I do

Could I ask what your drying times are like using so much paint? Do you use Liquin or anything to speed it up? If you varnish how long do you wait?
I'm not using liquin or anything like that, and in the summer a painting could easily be dry to the touch in just a few days. But in the winter, it can easily be a few weeks or more before it's just dry to the touch

beautiful colors and values, love it...Ive waffled on the paint quality choice over the years, I agree with using more paint and not letting cost get in the way of the artistic process and training, especially with this style, you can't skimp on paint....lately ive gone back toward more "value" based paint brands, thanks again...

Looks like you are out in the middle of nature but the highway noise and truck back up beeps say you are in or near some kind of heavy work zone. Interesting contrast between sight and sounds.
No highway noise but new construction is all over the valley
I use a lot of Winton oils. But I recently learned that any zinc in an oil paint makes a weak bond and will eventually cause it to cleave. The strongest bond is lead, and it strengthens everything thing because it leaches. BUT, plein aire, it’s best to keep lead out of the landscape. You can use Titanium White, PW6. Never PW4 (zinc). It is the only color I will pay more for, because I don’t want it to come apart years later. If it’s cheap and pigments aren’t labeled, you can be sure there is zinc in there. Zinc is fine in water based media, just not in oils. I found this out after 35 years. Ouch. I have seen one of my early pieces and it was cleaving.

Yo Turner,,I buy big tubes of Utrecht oils,,, Keep my palette limited and its been working out for me for over 30 years,,I will buy smaller tubes of certain colors but I'm with you,,, Keep up the good work!

I use artist quality and student quality and I find it the same. But in a 100 years who knows. If you paint alot you need alot of moola if you are going to use the best paints so student paints I find are awesome. Beautiful work Turner🎨🎨

well, as I was learning I definitely wasn't able to paint this way, but I was trained in a very direct style of painting. so it's all lead me to where I am now

When you use cheap quality paints, the pigments are much more present and will last for eternity. Cheap paint won’t last with time. The reason why the paintings of the old masters lasted it’s because they were using the best quality of pigments. The point in oil painting is to use as less as possible the white. The best white you can buy is a white that dry fast.
Your thoughts on the paint you use are right on. I buy on sale or with discounts. I tell my students the same advice.

First, I love your painting style. Every stroke has purpose. I have a question regarding “material you can afford.” I have only used canvas, but watching other artist they seem to always use linen. It’s pricey! Can I ask what you use and if you think linen is essential for an oil painter?
thank you, Ann. I started out only using cotton canvas, and then bounced back and forth using some linen for years. I am mostly using linen now, but I do not at all feel that is essential. I have a love of Russian Impressionism and am using a similar style linen to what they used. But I do not at all feel this is necessary
What size is your canvas? Interesting perspective on the paint. I care more about the texture then the brand.
