  • Today, I'm posting a more personal video, reviewing my father's everyday carry gear, and reflecting a bit on the lessons I've taken from his life. It's a bit heavy, so if you're just in it for the gear, you might skip over this one, but hey, I've gotta be real.

Nick, wonderful video. One of the hardest things a man can do is acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly in his father, and acknowledge that many of those same things are in himself. I'm in awe that you can do it publicly. I hope your fiance appreciates the quality of man that she has.

The best thing you can do is accept your father as a human being and realize he probably tried to do his best, from his perspective. I had to forgive YEARS of abuse I endured as a child and make peace with my father. I was incredibly cathartic.

You guys are the epitome of what we mean when we talk about "knife people" or "gun people".

Really, down to earth- nice folks!

It's funny how we don't really see the good, the bad and the ugly of our parents until later in life. As a child, my Dad was either all good or all ugly. He just passed away in Oct at age 83. Brilliant man who designed missles for Raytheon. However, a lot of hidden ugly in my family. Alcoholism effected everyone in one way or another. I inherited the demons early on in life.
Great and heartfelt tribute to your Dad. You have a way of connecting with people. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure what to say, Nick. This is very moving. Nothing I can add other than what you said resonates with me. The older I get the more I realize how much of me is my father. I try to live up to his "good" but my own "bad" and "ugly" often disappoint me. Thanks for sharing.

"The unexamined life is not worth living." ~ Socrates.
Sharing perspective borne of love, pain and introspection is a valuable gift to those open to receiving it. Thanks, Nick, for taking the "risk" intimacy demands. I feel sorry for the viewer who felt compelled to give a "thumbs-down." Hopefully one day they'll understand.

Glad you enjoyed, of sorts, and I appreciate the Socrates. And don't worry about the downvote. Somebody hate-subscribes, I get one down-vote within 45 minutes of every video going live. You'd think Ernest Emerson would have better things to do.

Thanks Nick, that was amazing. Of all the knives I own, the one that matters most is the Old Timer that I gave my dad for Father's Day the first year I was old enough to legally buy one. He was still carrying it the day he died, and I've carried it on every important day in my life since then. All these years later, he's still with me on every busted knuckle, thrown tool and procrastinated chore, but he's also the co-owner of every time I manage to triumph over a machine. Thanks again for the reminder.

I've got something similar from my great uncle. it's a stockman knife made by kutmaster, best I can tell it's from the 1940s. he didn't have any kids himself, so when he passed he gave it to his brother, who eventually passed it on to me. he used to sharpen it on a bench grinder, so it had an ugly edge, but he didn't ruin the temper and with about 45 minutes on a set of oil stones and a bit of stropping it became three of the sharpest blades in my collection. he might have even inadvertently improved the temper, that thing holds an edge damn near as good as some of my stuff in way more modern steels. I don't carry it every day since I'm pretty good at losing things and it has no provisions for a pocket clip or lanyard, and you need both hands to open it, but whenever I get a hankering to carry a traditional its my first choice.

Nick, SOG warranties all of their knifes for life. I know that the paratool is not one of your favorites but for the cost of return postage you can send it in to them and they will rebuild it to factor new. I have had one as my EDC for 25+ years now and still use it every day and have had it rebuilt a few times over the years.

In this segment you have show me & your loyal fans & groupies who you really are as a person. You're not just a knives freak but a knives connoisseur and evidently a person with a heart. Nick I’ve only been subscribed to your channel for only a few weeks. I am so impressed with your channel, your reviews, and just you as a person. When I first started watching I at first thought you might be some sort of knife snob but then I watched the vid where you were talking about some guy showing off his collection of 2 knives that wasn’t the most expensive knives or best and how he was ashamed of his collection, or maybe it was you using it as an example and wasn’t factual but anyways it made me rethink a lot of things about my collection and just about life in general and about how the important thing is things that bring me joy regardless of the price. Now I watch this vid and wow powerful stuff. Just wanted to thank you for being real and giving me the motivation to rethink things. Keep on putting out the great content

I've been watching your videos for a few months now, but don't think I've commented on any of them. Thanks for posting this. The EDC aspect reminds me of my grandpa, who has been gone for almost a year. He always had a pocket knife, pencil, pad of paper, change purse, 22lr naa. Christmas is hard this year without him. Alzheimer's is the worst. The deeper and darker part of the video and our lives, reminds me of my dad who has been gone since 95. Took me a long time to let go of the darkness of him and just acknowledge that he was a broken man like all of us.

Bravo. There is a little good, bad, and ugly in pretty much everything and everyone and it's a great lifeskill to recognize those facts and to be able to evaluate those proportions to find the people and things you want to surround yourself with in this life.

That moment when the video you are watching on TH-cam somehow perfectly synchronizes with your personal life and time stops. Thank you, Nick, I needed to hear this today.

I'm 58. When I heard my father died I think I said "oh...would you please pass the salt"...My Mother died 8 years ago and I still suffer. Thanks for that Nick. That was awesome, can't wait to share it.

Just came across this by accident even though I have been enjoying your reviews for about a week. Never cried after watching a u tube video until today. In fact the last time I shed a tear was when the dog was very ill.
You woke a few paternal demons of my own. Time to review them and look in the mirror.
Of all the things I've seen on the internet this "takes the cake ".
    Thank you from my heart.

So many of us have so much in common personally...
not much of it seen on TH-cam or content of any kind...
    So it's easy to forget...
    or maybe never even know...
that in many cases and ways...
we're more alike than it seems.
    Thanks Nick.
I literally laugh from you (in a good way) at least once during every vid I've seen.
I smiled during this one. 🤙✌️

Great video. You got me thinking about my Dad. He was a mechanic when they actually fixed things, not just swapped out parts. He always carried a 2 bladed Barlow knife, a small pair of pliers, and miscellaneous bolts and washers. He always managed to break his pliers. He was a great guy. I haven't thought about him in a while. Thanks.

Haven't seen this video until now, a great video and I like your analysis of of the honest human being. Won't go further into it, but it touches something who many human beings are running away from using others as a buffer against acknowledgement.

I lost my Dad nearly three years ago Nick. I appreciate how much courage it must have taken on your part to share this. Posting about something unique to your own father (his EDC kit) must have been massively difficult. You have my respect. God bless ya dude.....

I feel like little things like what you showed in this video that are passed on are some of the most invaluable and most meaningful items you can have. To even have anything to remember someone you loved so much is something you just can't put a price on. "which is a beautiful thing"

Nick, thanks for taking the time to make this video. It reminded me of my own father and brought me to tears. As time passes, the good memories remain and the ugly ones will fade away. If anything, my father taught me to not be like him. Nick, please know that you are a great person and you are loved my friend. Now, go do what you do best and tell us what you really think about the Norseman!
