  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 Toyota Tundra Pickup is built to tow. But is it better than the Ram 1500 We decided to find out by putting both pickups up against each other in a Mega Mashup Sequel. Once again both trucks tow the old Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond in the Rough up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Toyota Tundra up to the task of towing a over 7,000 pounds up to the top of the tunnel?
    In fact according to Toyota this pickup can tow up to 9,600 pounds. That's enough weight to need a commercial truckers license in most states. In this first TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we test the truck up the Ike Gauntlet see how fast it will tow around 7,200 pounds of old American Luxury car plus people and gear 8 miles up a 7 percent grade to the Eisenhower tunnel with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

    It's funny how the stop watch was started on the traffic sign on the left side of the on ramp on the Tundra. The Ford and Ram was start on the sign on the right side which is further down the on ramp. That makes it a real fair test...right. It does not matter which brand you drive, if you are happy with your truck thats all that matters. But make it a fair and proper reveiw and comparision. I love all trucks, I hate when companies lie and reviewers change things to throw a test. Consumers deserve fair and accurate reveiws and information. We don't care about opinions and comments because you like only one brand more than others. Talk to a mechanic who works on them and knows which one breaks down more and cost more to fix. He can give you a better reveiw them this video..

    First of all, great video's Guy's. It's great to see real world testing by an unbiased party. I was amazed how easy it was for the F-150 in your last video's to pull that trailer with a 3:73 ratio. It would be great to see you do it again in the cooler weather with the Ecoboost but this time with the optional 4:10 ratio available in the FX4. I think it would be by far the best. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more test's and reviews.

    If you guys did any research or had half of a clue these videos might actually be informative. Roman- the oil gauge on the dash is oil pressure not temperature. And the tundras direct drive gear is 4th not 5th 5th gear is 0.728 and 6th is 0.588. Also for the love of god turn off your cell phones or put them in airplane mode while you are recording the video and then you wont get that annoying noise in your videos

    They are pointing to air temp to be the reason for the change in time, but when they tested the 2013 they actually let off just a bit at one point due to traffic (which would account for a few of the seconds being argued over). The issue with the eco-boost, even with its trailer braking being built in is the brakes were ~450 degrees. I'll give up the few seconds for the safer brakes.

  • @shanemulvaney16
    @shanemulvaney16 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video guys. I have recently purchased the 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew 4x4 with the 3.92 gear. During your braking session, you guys retested because you forgot to set the trailer brake gain, however, after adjusting the temps were about the same.
    In the settings on the 8.4" touch screen, you have the option to set the intensity of the trailer brake, whether light electric over hydrolic or light electric or heavy electric, etc.
    I am wondering if any of these changes were made prior to towing or if you were going strictly off the trailer brake controller.
    Perhaps a different outcome with a little hotter trailer brakes if not, but with that said, it shows the Dodge can handle a heavy load, on a steep downgrade all on its own.

  • @headcas620
    @headcas620 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep. i'd say the ecoboost is competitive with the bigger, optional motors on the other guys. And definitely better at high altitude.

    Went to the RV dealer with a neighbor in his Tundra, (nice truck too), who wanted to buy a 40' travel trailer/ toy hauler. When he asked about installing the 5th wheel, the service dept. guy laughed and said it would tow better with a dually Ford or Dodge due to the large mass. When he said "yeah but these things towed a space shuttle!" the RV guys laughed even harder! One of my trucks is a ten year old Ram 1500 Hemi Sport with about 150000 miles on it and it's been a good daily driver for years but just like my neighbor, I'd have to rethink pulling something that massive with a 1/2 ton single rear wheel vehicle. One must size the truck to the job at hand.

    Direct drive is actually in 4th on the Tundra. 5th and 6th are BOTH overdrives. That's why the V6 model only has a 5-speed automatic. They essentially are the same transmissions with an additional overdrive gear in the 6-speed.

    Why are they so upset tundra does not have an integrated brake controller (IBC)?? Maybe some people don't tow.? Not sure about Dodge and Ford but the GM IBC's act up all the time and even if any codes are set like harmless emissions codes you suddenly loose ALL trailer braking- maybe on a long hill in the mountains? Also it can cause sway control to randomly kick in without a trailer in tow which can lead to loss of vehicle control. The fix? Disconnect the IBC and install a stand-alone brake controller. Check it out its crazy!!

    I'd be interested to see you guys do a quick payload breakdown. Trucks are rated to tow a ton these days, but payloads are going down for ride quality. With ~700lbs of people and 15% of that trailer as tongue weight, you're probably over the advertised payload (and GVWR) of 1410lbs by 3-400lbs.

    Not, too crazy with the 2014-2015 Tundra's front end & rear end taillights tailgate looks good. my 2009 is a decent looking pickup, wish i had the 2015 tailgate on it but w/e.

      +spitfiremark14 do you know if it is possible to get the tailgate? I have a 2010 and like the look of the tailgate

      I, have no Idea best thing to do would be to consult the Toyota Dealer Technicians and Toyota Forums I'm betting they didn't change much as far as the functioning of the tailgate.

      I agree! The dished tailgate and curvilinear fenders on the ‘07-‘13 Tundras was a prettier body style. That’s the same reason that some folks say the Dodge is the prettiest truck on the road. But, guys seem to like trucks that look beefy. Toyota was probably just responding to what the domestic truck manufacturers were doing with their styling.

    Carguychris is right on. '04 Titan pioneered the assisted tailgate. As well as locking in-bed storage, in-bed lighting, moveable tie-downs... But it's the Rodney Dangerfield of half tons. No respect...

    The car manufacturers' websites show gallery pics of exterior and interior shots. If you want to see images of the trucks, go there. Just a thought.

    I wish someone would comment on that the regular cab 8' box, double Cab 6'5" box and crewmax 5'5" box Tundra all have the same wheelbase. So if you want the longer 6'5" bed you get a super short ugly cab. But if you want a full cab you get a short bed.

    I realize you didn't push the EcoBoost as hard as you could have because it would throw off the fuel economy data, but I would love to see what time you could have achieved with it. Please retest it with the pedal to the floor! :)

    But you have to take in mind that Mr. Truck is a Ford guy. He says so in the 2015 Ford F-450 release video I believe. Roman and Nathan are more blunt and show no sign of bias in ANY of there car/truck videos. I would like to see either Roman or Nathan drive the Ford up Ike Gauntlet, preferably Roman IMO.

    Hi guy's......If you had a choice between a Toyota Tundra and a Nissan Titan what one would you recommend?

  • @MrBlurberries
    @MrBlurberries 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The Tundra has 4.30s while the Ram has the 8 speed and 3.92s, how is it power to the Tundra? 1st gear of the Tundra is 3.33 and the Ram has a 4.70 1st gear. Final drive of 1st gear is Tundra 14.32 vs Ram 18.42. Power to the Ram!

      it's because the rear diff on the tundra is 4.6 giving it more power

      the Asus pro Mac is a lie Its 4.30, but I understand you wouldn't know since you can't read anyway.

      By your line of reasoning a Tundra outpulls a Volvo tractor with 600hp D16, since you can spec them with 2.43 rear ends.

    but you also need to consdier the time it takes the turbos to spool, the 5.3 is going to make a better power band since its natural aspiration. the 5.3 would be a hell of a lot better in a long haul considering when turbos get to hot they like to blow up, or cease up, and the 5.3 will just last longer towing hard, sure it doesn't make as much power as the eco boost, but id rather have the 5.3 for towing
