2013 Toyota Tundra takes on Ford, Chevy & the Ike Gauntlet Mashup Towing Test ( Episode 1 )

  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2013 Toyota Tundra Pickup is built to tow. But is it better than the Ford F-150 and the brand new Chevy Silverado? We decided to find out by putting all three pickups up against each other in a Mega Mashup by having them tow the old Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond in the Rough up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Toyota Tundra up to the task of towing a over 7,000 pounds up to the top of the tunnel?
In fact according to Toyota this pickup can tow up to 9,000 pounds. That's enough weight to need a commercial truckers license in most states. In this first TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we test the truck up the Ike Gauntlet see how fast it will tow over 7,000 pounds of old American Luxury car 8 miles up a 7 percent grade to the Eisenhower tunnel with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

1-800-beatdown .....we got our first tundra 2 years ago. We own and operate a construction business. Today, we now have 3 tundras in our family. We have gotten rid of every other vehicle. I drive a 2013 crewmax 5.7, my son drive a 2012 extended cab 5.7, wife drives a 2017 crewmax 5.7.
Fantastic trucks. And we have literally owned every other brand....gmc, chevy, ford, nissan, ram. My second favorite after tundra was the ram

Added K&N filter and Gibson exhaust to my 2011 5.7 4×4 crewmax. Touched 22.5 mpg with 1500lbs of people and cargo. Averaged 19.8 for the trip showing off for my Dad. It is the finest machine I have ever owned and driven! It's a powerhouse, super sweet ride and not a day goes by I regret buying this truck. With a heavy load on it the limited it came factory with adjustable headlight toggle to raise and lower them inside the cab.

Most people that talk shit about Toyota have either never driven one or just assume because the logo is from Japan. Chevy is very much overrated. Ford is decent compared to Chevy. Through my experience, Toyota has it all the way. The fuel efficiency isn't the greatest but most people who buy a truck wouldn't really care. It has a perfect balance of horsepower and a surprising amount of torque with a beautiful ride. If ya want something real... Get a Toyota.

My dad owns a 2008 Tundra and my truck is his old F-150 and it's only got about 200 HP. First time I drove the Tundra, with 381 HP, I thought I was gonna die from that enormous torque. Almost literally scared the shit out of me.

FMChimera Well I think you should run for office somewhere and you have done it all, no disrespect. My experience in engineering and construction for half ton work the toyota has personally done better then chevy and ford, which I owned. By dollars of maintenance and repair (other then my fault) has been extremely lower then both previous. The 4x4 and towing feel/power is extremely better. My company leases fords because they are cheap and like you said much bigger trucks. They do the job yes, would I ever personally own on again? maybe but my tundra has been the "best" by trial so far. My father was a ford man, no matter what, I learned how to work on motors and trucks because of ford. I have nothing against them all they are all getting very nice. I do have 113,000 k miles on a 2009 and am not looking into a new truck like previous

The only thing l've change is the engine oil, battery, starter, spark plugs and fuel filter. Every thing is else is still original, and still running strong. l don't baby this truck either. l always do better than my brothers when we go hunting. 1 ownes a Chevy and the other a Ford. l also have a Tacoma 4x4 w/ 268,000 miles and it still has original parts. Planning on buying a Tundra. Toyota all the way for me.

Hi Brian, Thanks for your comment. Just to be clear only the Ford F-150 was able to maintain the 60 MPH speed limit. Pulling over 8000 pounds at over 10,0000 feet above sea level up a 7 percent grade is not easy. The other trucks struggled and took different amounts of time to finish the Ike Gauntlet. Perhaps you missed this important fact and the entire point of the series and the Gauntlet.

Maybe I missed it, but how did the engine/trans temps do on the Tundra? I know you discussed brake temps, but going up hill, brake temps aren't really an issue. I just recently sold my silverado in favor of a Tundra because I couldn't keep the trans cool hauling approx. 6500 lbs up a 6% grade for about 6 miles. I love my Tundra, we pull a 6,000 + lbs camp-trailer setup, living in north west mountains. We've pulled in high winds, treacherous storms, ugly 4x4 dirt roads and 85 mph when passing semi trucks pulling scarey triples in the flatlands. It's been awesome small package and we goes where most people can't get a camp trailer. Yup, I'm getting to trust my Tundra Pro more more on every trip we take. But I still need's three 5 gallon gas cans in the back of the truck, lol.
It's been a blast and we are thinking about getting a newer Tundra or a 3/4 ton, it's a dam hard choices to make...

My only gripe with the Tundra is its lack of a turbocharged/intercooled diesel engine. You can get a Ford F250 with a diesel engine, and you can get a Chevy C2500 with a Duramax turbo diesel. But no Tundra with a diesel, not at any price.

Tundra's have headlight leveling controls. I never tow, but it's still cool. Little roller switch that lets you lower the lights for towing. Has like 5 levels I think.

I use to be a Chevy guy but after my fuel pump failed twice on my 08 1500 I've traded up to Toyota and love it! My 97 Silverado my 2001 Silverado all had to have the fuel pumps replaced and all three left me stranded. What is it with GM and their fuel pumps? I expect at least 200,000 trouble free miles out of this Toyota.

Look at the wiring that chevy uses, then look at the wiring toyota uses. The quality is on another level. I lost all faith in american vehicles and trucks after my 2004 trailblazer which was a good truck but it got totaled so we got the money and bought a 2004 toyota 4runner....the trailblazer had a slipping transmission, back windows didnt work, the left turn signal would go out every other week (would carry spares) Headlights would go out for no apparent reason, keyless entry would stop working because the security unit would short out, and most of the buttons on the stereo and hvac were falling off or wouldnt work.
The 4runner on the other hand had 0 issues everything worked and it worked flawlessly. Also had 50k more miles and ran like it was new. I say GM, and Chrysler need to go under for making such shit vehicles, fords are decent but no where near the toyotas. Im in the market for a used tundra and hopefully I buy one in the next few weeks. TOYOTA all the way.

just today i tested 3 2014/15 Toyota Tundras one base model 5.7, base 4.6 and a 4.6 with a cat back exhaust and cone filter from K&N, there trucks weigh in at 12500 pounds because they are armored, breaks wise they preform alot better than the 2015 Ford F550 armored as well i can give the 0-60 average time that i got from doing 6 runs on each truck and the numbers are alot better than we got with the ford but the ford is 4000 pounds heavier but its a 550 and this is a tundra.... so 5.7 did 13.76 the stock 4.6 17.98 and 4.6 with mods 16.68 the ford is around 21 seconds and the breaks start showing major fatigue after the 3 run where the Toyota did show any even after the 6th, also keep in mind the toyota right now is 4500 pounds over GVWR and the ford is 3000 pounds under..... so yes the Toyota is a better truck.....

Java a tocoma is far from better than modern day 1500 trucks. The new trucks are faster, better on gas, way more power for towing, more capable, ride better, much larger etc. The tocoma is just a little toy truck for playing off road. Might as well get a jeep.

What were the numbers for the engine coolant temp, oil temp, and transmission temp going up the pass when you checked them with the computer? For the temps (especially the trans) to remain "normal" in those conditions is not "normal," as there is a lot of energy going through that drivetrain, and a lot of stock and modified pickups have had to sit it out on the side of that grade waiting for a tow back down to replace the trans.

So you guys are babying the tundra as if it is a childs toy?? Yet toyota has been one of the most reliable vehicles for years. The tundra also pulled the space shuttleEndeavour that was 155000-pound. Give them a true test of pulling -- pull until a certain sp eed and test how fast it can come to a complete stop after 70 MPH with 7500lbs behind it. The driver here seems to not have any idea how to drive at all.

Brand loyalty is a big thing for many people. Many shout over you, if you say anything against their brand, and refuse to listen to anything that does not conform to their beliefs. I see a lot of comments here that prove my point.
The fact is that the various trucks are very different. Being familiar with the various iterations of the Tundra, Silversdo, and F-150, as well as the Titan, Avalanche, Ridgeline, and Ram 1500, I have enough seat time for some perspective. One of the things I have noticed, is that the quality of the various trucks has changed over the years. People seem to get stuck on a particular make, based on a few years' experience, or by reputation/hearsay. In my experience, past models, reputation, and hearsay do not tow much today. I'm all about function, durability, and value. If I can't get that from a given make today, I'll try a different make that can.
Since 1980, I have noticed a disturbing trend, of the function being diminished, in favor of glitz and bling. It's a truck. I do not care about those things. They do not help me do what I want to do. Trucks with automatics. Oh, my. The reason they had manual transmissions was so thry could be used for work. Now, they're designed so that a child can drive them. The trucks now have great big specs, but usually those specs do not seem to mean much, in the real world. Not only do the trucks seem to be less ccapable, so do the drivers. Drivers expect the vehicle to do the thinking for them, and act accordingly.
Over the years, some trucks were great, one year, and terrible the next. People who got a bad year from one manufacturer judged all years according to that experience, and jumped to another manufacturer. Similarly, people judge all years of one make by a good experience.
One of my pet peeves is the refusal of many people to objectively listen to the issues, and try to get to a fix. Some of the vehicles I had were just terrible. So terrible, that the dealers swapped out the vehicles, and eventually refunded my money. The issues i had remain unfixed, and are on all of those vehicles. The issues are flaws, but apparently very few people encounter these issues. The manufacturer deemed it better to refund the customers' money than to try to fix the issues. Unfortunately for me, this process took almost 5 years to resolve, so that I could have a usable truck, basically, taking the refunded money to buy a different make of truck. In that 5 years, the manufacturer refused to honor my warranty, refused to lemon the vehicle, and basically blamed everything on me. The dealer swapped out the truck, several times. Eventually, the mechanics were forced to report the same issues. Then more than 100 people across the country had the issues. People died, because of the issues. Still, toyota did nothing. Then one of the company executives experienced the issues, and I was told to return my truck for a full refund, plus some cash, but with a small provision.
While all the problems were going on, I joined a forum to get help from other owners. As bad as the dealer and the manufacturer had been, the other owners were far worse. I was called names, my posts were deleted, and I was eventually kicked off the forum. The fellow users and the moderators refused to allow anyone to even ask about a problem. These issues were repeatable, and potentially fatal, but their viewpoint was apparently more important. So, I have experience with the delusional opinions of many truck owners.
I found the same issues with honda and nissan. The honda ATV forums being slightly worse than the toyota tundra and honda ridgeline forums. Meanwhile, I noticed that, if I posted the same issues on Silverado, Avalanche, or F-150 forums, I got help--even though I was asking about Tundras, Titans, Ridgelines. Eventually, I realized that the problems with certain vehicles would never end, that the support forums for those vehicles would never be helpful, or anything other than hostile, that I had basically come to hate those vehicles, and that the problem was the things they had in common.
While those vehicles were in the shop, I drove rental vehicles. This gave me the opportunity to try other makes, and I took that opportunity. One thing that I found, is that there is no perfect truck for everyone--or even anyone. I wish I could mix and match the features I like, and get rid of the other half of the features.
I see a lot of posts here, where people seem to be either pushing an agenda, or trying to make themselves feel better about their purchase decision, by getting other people to make the same decision. If you are regretting your purchase decision, you probably won't help your case by inflicting it on others.
The fact is that each of the trucks has pros and cons. Whichever truck you choose, you have to live with the cons of that truck. personally, I try to choose the truck that is the closest to a full work package. Basically, which has the fewest impediments to doing what I want to do.

Mr Truck, the axle ratio is just half of it. The transmission ratio of the gear you are in is the other half & multiplied together they make up the final overall ratio.
