I think it should also be mentioned that for the Movie ‘Cannonball Run’ and the real life race of the same name, said race is going from New York (or Connecticut) to California, where the Steel Ball Run race is going in the reverse direction, which I find fascinating.
The Cannonball Run was an unoffical automobiles race, while Steel Ball Run was an offical, international (technically) horse race. The Steel Ball Run also features automobiles, but they broke down shortly after the race started, which I find even more interesting. Araki seemingly made the Steel Ball Run the opposite of Cannonball Run

araki did a good job with the indiana jones reference, bc when i was playing Eyes Of Heaven my brother in law walked in the room and saw joseph on the screen and said "woah, who is this indiana jones guy??"
You missed this: Johnny and the Steel Ball Run are references to the protagonist and race of the horse race film Hidalgo And the Zeppeli of that part is a reference of Silence from the spaghetti western movie The great silence. Giving his life in term to save her girlfriend. Diego might be the antagonist of that movie, Loco.
I got most of these references despite alot of them being decades before my time (even the one in stone ocean about the movie Picnic with William Holden). I didn't have cable and internet when I was really little so yeah my interests are very eclectic. I even got to meet Sting in person for free at my previous job, I was thinking of you Noriaki
I think in the Part 5, where Mista’s revolver got broken by King Crimson is a reference to the Goodfellas scene where Tommy whacks Billy Batts with his revolver. And when Tommy tries to shot billy’s mouth, Jimmy Conway prevents him by putting tommy’s gun away with forces, leaving his revolver broken in similar condition as Mista’s one
Ok, so this is pure speculation on my part but I believe that Will's design might be a reference to the Weekly Shonen Champion's "mascot". WSC was the publisher of Babel II, one of Araki's favorite manga, and a huge influence for him.
A possible reference I noticed is that the last part of Phantom Blood's storyline is likely based on the film "Re-Animator" (The main villain has his head cut off but continues to live due to being undead and then ambushes the heroes with an army of zombies.)
This technically doesn't count as a reference since the movie was released after part 4 (might have been based on the novel, I'm not sure) but Partrick Bateman from American Psycho is incredibly similar to Kira Yoshikage, both are psychopaths and have similar monologues about their daily lives (Norman explaining his daily routine near the beginning of the movie and Kira as well when shegechi confronts him
I think Kira is a reference to two Suskind's novel characters: Grenouille (Perfume:The Story of a Murderer) and Jonathan Noel (The Pigeon). They are both very similar to him in terms of personality.
American Psycho is a novel... a very good one... who's been published in 1991 so yes, some aspects of Kira's personnality could be based on Patrick Bateman.
@@Hemassy Well, he does have a reference to American Psycho. At one point when his coworkers ask if he'd like to join them for lunch, Kira responds with "I can't, I have to deliver some video tapes" which is a line lifted from American Psycho.
The final story from Part 5, Sleeping Slaves, has some references to the first Godfather. The arc begins with a man asking the gang to avenge her daughter by dealing with her ex-boyfriend, like in the beginning of the movie. The ending of part 5 mirrors as well the ending of the movie, with both Giorno and Michael becoming the boss of the organization.
I think the N'doul fight is very similar to the movie Tremors, where his stand attacks very similar to the Tremors from that movie. it attacks based on sound, takes place in a desert etc. I immediately thought of Tremors when I read it.
I like how the whole introduction of stands have become less horror oriented and become action oriented then eventually puzzle oriented, like even Stand introductions are influenced by film. Kakyoin's Hierophant Green was treated like some scary horror creature possesing people then at the end DIO's stand was slowly building up intensity from Nukesaku's death to the eventual reveal of it's ability then Golden Wind has the character be like "yeah this is my stand ability" and just fight. eventually JoJolion has fights set up to be like "yeah this is the problem now solve it", horror is still present in both of these but used only sparingly .
that makes sense though. As time goes on, you become desensitized. A new stand intro is always cool don't get me wrong but when they become as common as pokemon it loses a good chunk of its impact.
Great video! I think you missed two references to the Godfather. The end of part 5 in the sleeping slaves arc, there's the old man who asks Bruno to get revenge for his daughter. This is similar to the scene at the start of the Godfather. In part 7, Wekapipo's backstory involves his friend marrying his sister but then is shown to be abusive to her, so he fights him. This is similar to Connie's husband being abusive and her brother Sonny finding out and fighting him.
That scene after Diavolo get hit by golden experience requiem where he is on a operation table but can move or speak is a direct reference to the 1971 italian movie Short Night of Glass Dolls. Its really good, check it out.
The lovers fight kind of reminds me of an episode of Ultraseven, where the monster in the episode is an alien parasite that makes its host vampiric. Not only does the main hero need to shrink down to size, but the monster itself is visually an arthropod, similar to Lovers’ scorpion-like body.
3:23 I’d say it’s all but officially confirmed that Stroheim draws from Erich Von Stroheim, because Von Stroheim’s character in the film “The Grand Illusion” is a clear model for Cyborg Stroheim, as he is a German major with a metal chin piece thing and a monocle
D4C may be a reference to the character of Harvey from the film Harvey. Both are have rabbit designs and D4C' ability to go to different parallel universe is similar to Harvey's ability to take people to the places of their dreams.
Another mention is the father of Scolippi's girlfriend and his plot in general, strongly inspired by the plot of Amerigo Bonasera in The Godfather. Also I should read it again, but I have no doubt that part 7 is full of spaghetti western influences. The same name "Ringo" by Ringo Roadagain was the name of a recurring spaghetti western character played by actor Giuliano Gemma. The clash against Magent Magent and Uecapipo instead always reminded me a bit of The big silence, a western film set in a completely snowy climate.
There is a panel in the fight against Urban Guerilla that reminds me of the poster for The Evil Dead, but I'm not sure whether the scene is directly referencing it or not. For me it's mostly the stylized drawing of the hand and how it pops up out of the ground to grab a woman's (in this case Yasuho's) throat.
What about "the outsiders"? -narancia resembles ralph macchio in the film -the themesong has the phrase "stay gold" -giorno and ponyboy were both originally brunettes who became blonde later on
@@Professor-fc7vc well considering i mentioned ralph macchio, it would specifically be a movie reference. And the movie came out in 1983 while phantom blood was first written in 1987. This is likely an intentional reference since the likeness of Kira is based on David Bowie, who plays Thomas Jerome Newton in the movie.
You point out the scene of Devo falling and disappearing as being a reference to the end of Halloween, but I would think Dio's transformation scene in p1 matches that closer. He gets shot multiple times before going out the window, before disappearing similarly. Additionally, the Geb fight might be a reference to the film Tremors, in which people in the desert must keep still and quiet to avoid detection from the graboids below. The scene of the car being pulled underground is reminiscent of a similar scene in the film.
I don't see you reference it but ill say it just in case. The idea of the characters getting attacked by dead people surrounded by mist during the justice fight really reminds me of the John Carpenters the fog, by steven king I think.
In Part 4, Kira references American Psycho twice by complete accident. Well past Hamon Beat, we have another reference in Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe, and it's the most recent one too. Drip Painting Style's plots seems to be inspired by the 2020 film Unhinged, it's Japanese title is referenced when Mitsuki is being tailgated. Also, on a side note, I'd like to see a video game references in Jojo. And if your unable to find much references then it's safe to make a "others" reference video,
The novel Firestarter features a half blind sniper who is an agent of an organization hunting a psychic father and daughter. Later in the novel after they're captured, the sniper named John Rainbird disguises as a regular employee of the base (janitor) to blend in and get close to the pyrokinetic daughter. Seeing how Araki is clearly a big fan of Stephen King I think he took inspiration from all that for Jongalli A and The Visitor arc in general. Edit: I should have commented this in book references, even though there are two movies for that book now.
King Crimson's design is earily similar to Eva Unit-1 without armor, right down to the fact Eva has spherical shape on her forehead with two dots, and of course the piercing eyes. Before King Crimson adapts his more cubical headshape, it's head shape is also similar to Unit-1.
I like reference because the person who make these kinds of thing if things are gone inspiring of or love to watch or read of things to reference or inspired
Here's another fun reference for you that you may have missed. The part of Narancha's backstory where Fugo brings him into the diner, pleading for the others to feed him spaghetti is a reference to the original book version of The Godafather, where Sonny introduces Hagen to the family the same way in a flashback. Both even had eye infections that would have been lethal if left untreated. This bit of backstory is not explicitly mentioned in the movies, but it's in the book.
I can't wait for stone ocean anime adaptation & the release of jojo lands, just for the references, because I love the fact that Araki is a movie and music lover like myself.

12:29 Also just before this fight Abachio, Mista and Narancia suspected some random guy of being an enemy stand user, beat him down to the floor, and kicked him on the ground relentlessly in a way that much resembles a scene in Shawshank Redemption (ironically before part 6 was released).

Id be intrested in references to jojo in other media such as tv and anime and ither mediums, i think it would be cool to see jojo referenced as we see lots of reference, homages and such in jojo
Like Guile from street fighter
Paw patrol has an episode with actual jojo poses
Girls: Ew, she has the same costume as me.
Boys: 3:54
Jojo... The most American Japanese manga.
Any contenders? Even stuff like green bag set entirely in America don't feel as American as steel ball run

Araki: "The dichotomy between Jonathon and Dio is almost exactly the same as Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla."
"Can you elaborate?"
"No."
in Ajin series the characters can summon shadow figure like stand, as JoJo fan I recommended to watch Ajin anime season 1 and 2. very worth to watch, even you're not getting used to see anime in 3D.
Feels like home, been a fat minute since I had my extra sweet JoJo dose.
*AND THEN FROM THE KAMEN RIDER GAME NAMED MEMORIES HEROEZ THE ANTAGONIST OF THE GAME VOICE ACTOR IS THE SAME ACTOR THAT VOICES DIO* and also that 2 series (kabuto and ex aid) the antagonist can stop time
