    I know people who always say gnosticism is a "heresy." I've never been convinced that there is a one-size-fits-all gnosticism.

      My only problem is how he is saying Gnostics are all alike as if a unified system they was as varied as the reformation churches today. the followers of the thomas path was wildly different from the johanites

    Eye opening indeed! Many thanks. Please do more on the Christian tradition (loosely speaking). Like Jung said, be you believer or not you have to make peace with your own religious tradition somehow. After all it gets battered and scared into most of use when we are young I think.

      Both of these guys are NOT Gnostic. god-gods do not exist anymore. To use the word god to represent the divine source(Superconscious invisible MIND) Father Holy is an insult. God means archon ruler(devil). Gnositcs know our body(material flesh) was made by god. But our light water eternal souls were created by Christ. MAN! is greater than god. MAN is the name of the Holy Spirit. "I AM THE SON OF MAN(words of Christ)." "The Gnostic Truth, The Sacred Secret". th-cam.com/video/CO9v3OIFnxM/w-d-xo.html Peace.

    3:56 Talk about a four years long riddle. I think he said "dhyana" sanskrit equivalent for pali "jhana" both of which you can translate to "meditation". These descend from proto indo-european "dhya" - to contemplate, meditate, think.
    gnosis however can be traced back to "gneh" - to know, and this is where my lead ends because both of these come from an older form maybe "dheie" - to look, but proto indo-european is a reconstructed language and I have no access to the original tables (which are nearly speculative in nature), and no versions exist in the internet, and to make matters worse I think conventions have changed and these are now written differently, so looking for example at The Oxford Introduction for Proto-Indo-European yielded no results for either of these roots :PPP
    If you use an online dictionary like Oxford's or Wiktionary theres a suggestion that "dheie" became the greek "sima" - omen from the gods, sign, also root word for english "sign" and "sow", but I am pretty sure this is wrong and the word is a cognate with the Sanskrit term, or even more messy, the roots are cognates in PIE with different origins.
    Also to note sanskrit "jnana" - knowledge, is very much a daughter of PIE "gneh", just like greek "gnosis". but I dont know if "dhyana" and "jnana" are ultimately related, I cant even google because I'd need to know Devanagari.
    So the short answer is no, theres probably no direct relation between sanskrit "dhyana" and greek "gnosis".

    Didn't hear it mentioned - Blake's "Urizen" also implies "your reason", i.e., the analytical, deconstructive aspect of the mind (vs. the capacity for holistic perception).

    The greater and lesser temptations; we live in the shadow of perception.
    The lesser temptation is near the edges of the shadow, which is an
    infinite fractal boundary, and believe this is all there is, thus
    placing all of your hope in the information coming to you from your five
    senses. The greater temptation is darkness masquerading as light,
    believing that you understand the light, because if you were to behold
    the light, whole and complete, in one moment in time, you would cease to
    be.

    There is nothing wrong with the orthodox Christian church. The teachings within the church still stand with the early Apostolic Fathers teachings and is still effective but is not out in the open for just anyone to diminish. You have to search for the teaching and you will find it.

    I was told that the word Hugeunots came from Eidgenossenschaft for Swiss Confederacy. This is possible.
    But then I came across another idea for the origin as Hu-Gnosticorum.
    And looked up Calvin and found that Calvin was in the very least accused of being a Gnostic. Whether he was or not I don't know yet.
    But it makes me wonder as to the real origins of Calvinist Protestantism and the possibility that it could have been a contemporary Gnosticism.
    The Hugeunots became master paper makers and printers and publishers in England and William Blake started his career as an engraver for a press and absorbed all the ancient symbolic language ideas while duplicating printing plates. His wife was descended from Hugeunots. Blake taught his wife how to have visions.
    So I am speculating that there was a esoteric tradition being taught within the printing trade itself that may have had deeper ancient origins.

    Richard forgets that the apostles could not have had different understandings of the teaching. Perhaps they each had different aspects they focused on but the apostles all received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. This common experience taught them the full truth as Jesus said that “I will send you the Holy Spirit and He will remind you of all these things that I have said”. The apostles didn’t have different understandings. Their disciples solid off into various sects. Never the less the apostolic succession preserved much of the original teaching. As well as can be expected back then.
    The sects were not born out of the apostles. The Holy Catholic Orthodox Church is what remain of this teaching today.

    I'm pretty sure psychedelics also played a role in the Gnostic traditions; likely still. They've been well known for tens of thousands of years and found all over Europe. Far more effective than starving yourself.

    • @Kasino973
      @Kasino973 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really that wasn't part of the pure understanding of gnosticism but some believed this to help just like some believed fasting helped. It was all about preference

    • @remnant174
      @remnant174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using psychedelics to gain knowledge is like using steroids to gain strength. They both work but one has undesirable side effects and the other does not.

    At first when I heard you say that there was an etymological connection between gnosis and the Buddhist (sanskrit)word yana, I thought, the poor guy is very confused. Yana means vehicle. Like in Mahayana, the great vehicle and Hinayana, the small vehicle etc. But then you say that it's the origin of the word zen, so I understand that you mean jhana and you simply mispronounce the "jh" for a "y". But now I think that you're mistaken because the Pali word jhana is unrelated to the word gnosis. Jhana means meditation. The sanskrit word that I know of that means knowledge and could be related to the word gnosis is "jnana" and is not pronounced like yana.

    • @TheTrueReiniat
      @TheTrueReiniat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Mishlove was trying to say sanskrit "dhyana", in pali "jhana". But the interesting thing here is that "jnana" - knowledge, is indeed a daughter of the proto-indoeuropean "gneh" - to know, just like greek "gnosis".

      Well, I don't know why you think the others forms of Christianity are any different, they all are just systems to understand the world. In the case of gnosticism, you are ignoring their metaphysics that I personally think are the most structured ones in all Christianity.

    The teacher that has raised his own stature, who has believed his own
    hype, who sees the world from a lofty perch so as to look down upon the
    rest of us, and does not feel a great sense of responsibility, is not
    worthy of the job. When we understand what can be known, what we know
    that we don't know, and what we don't know that we don't know, then we
    have begun to make progress.
