Thanks for showing that just because your glow plug glows red when you connect the glow igniter, doesn't necessarily mean its still good. I pulled my hair out due to this one for a while. I think another one that can be misleading is the "oh the piston and sleeve still has pinch. Therefore its still good.". I have had engines that run and idle great up until past ~210F degrees. Then the engine will die out. I get the feeling that this can be due to the fact that the engine was not broken in properly and the piston expanded too much when the sleeve was still too cold (i.e. engine was less than ~210F when breaking in. Or possibly for another). That being said, in this case the pinch can seem ok when you check it and your still irritated trying to find the reason why the damn thing just wont work properly. I love these type of videos man. Its rare to find a nitro engine video with good solid specific information. Maybe you can consider doing one about engine temps? (i.e. when breaking in, when tunning, where to temp the engine during break in?). Keep up the good work and cheers!!!
It definitely can drive people crazy if they're not used to it and and usually when the sleeve is worn out the engine will run as long as it's cool warm up to operating temperature shut off and will not restart till it's cold again if it's extremely tight when it's called means the sleeves are still good we're very little Break in time usually with a new engineer when you're uncertain of it's good to preheat them and keep the cylinder had wrapped with foil and keep the temperatures over 200゚F during your break and heat cyclin the heat cycling you can follow the atom Drake method for that

Bug I love this video!!! Awesome information was wondering what plugs do you recommend or bee better to run in the 2.5 2.5r and the 3.3 ? I know the manual says a long med I guess I’m asking what others are long med because some don’t say if they are long or short ?
This video answered a lot of questions I had in regards to the science of it all, thanks. I have an HPI 4.6 on 25% fuel and I'm currently using Fastrax 5 medium plug and I'm about to swap to an O.S 8 plug hoping for better quality. I like to think that I'm pretty clued up on the tuning side of things. What plug would you recommend for this engine? Thanks
The os 8 or 7 are great plugs but keep in mind they are short reach! If you need standard aka long reach plug get a OS LC4 or lc3. Just make sure you know what plug you are putting in. Some people say it makes no difference. In that case the manufacturer would tell you to put any plug in it and hope for the best.
Great video thank you. Do you know if these glow plugs share the same thread? IE they are interchangeable at least in the sense that they can be screwed into the same hole/
Yes they are the same thread and can be swapped between engines just note the length because some engines will take a long reach OS LC3 or LC4 some will take a short reach plug OS #6 #7 #8 plug. The Truro plug is only for use in turbo plug engine as it is a completely different design. Much bigger then the standard plugs i just mentioned. Hopefully that helps 🍻
@@thebug4046 It does thank you! I am using a plug for a different purpose than rc and was hoping they were interchangeable. You wouldnt happen to know the thread pitch would you? :)
@@DylanEdmiston no worries! What are you working on? And unfortunately I'm not sure what the thread pitch is. If you are on Facebook you can pop into the Nitro RC enthusiasts group im an admin in their
It all depends on the manufacturer what they want you to put in there but like I was mentioning for most off road Or ready to run type engines require a medium or hot or hot cold plugs really have no place on offer old engines unless you're on road racing they really don't make any sense other than giving you an extremely narrow tuning window However I did make a video explaining plug protrusion it's down a little bit in the videos if you want to have a look for a couple of minutes
Great videos, your fortunate covid is mild for you. You can’t say it’s not as bad as it’s made out to be. Other people are not so lucky 😢 different for each person. Hope you get better 👍🏻
The problem with the motor shutting off once the igniter is off I've actually bad this problem, the difference is that it seemed to be the crank bearing tried new glow plugs and all that stuff but no results.
Nope. Just a 2 stroke engine that uses a catalytic reaction between platinum and methanol. To run vs using spark. They are only around 8:1 compression ratio. About the same as a gas weed eater. A lot of people think they are a Diesel because they have a glow plug but the glow plug in these is very different from what you find in a Diesel truck. Rc glow plugs react and stay lit the hole time the engine runs. In a Diesel they are only to warm the air in the cylinders to help it start. That being said there is RC Diesel engines that only use high compression to start and run but they also use a different fuel mixture and the construction is different all tho they are still a 2 stroke. I have video explaining it
Bug Got a question for you about the dynamite .19 Mach 2. I have a new one that has not been broke in yet. In your opinion how will it run on 30% nitro and 13% oil?
can you do a vid on compression, checking the piston/sleeve, how close to tdc the piston is related to when a pinch is needed, when compression is on the lower side and when best to repinch.
Checking compression on these engines will always be different since these engines all have different exhaust port height witch will effect the reading because of trapped air space is different between engines. Usually when the engine Starts to shut off when it's hot and only restart after it cools off is the point when you pinch the piston and sleeve or replace it depending on how warn the pin bores are. If it starts good runs good and doesn't shut off when hot don't worry about it. Some engines will run with no pinch at all since it's still has good piston seal and compression. My pro 15 for example has zero pinch left but still has good compression. And runs good. Check out my rebuild videos I show and explain how all that works.

Hey their just a question I am kinda new to nitro tuning I’ve always ran it on factory tune but on my Kyosho usa 1 I’ve ran it a bit lean like way too lean only for like a little bit tho for around a quarter tank only but I was using some side winder 30% nitro 12% oil as long as it still has compression it should be fine right?
Well running to lean is damaging your engine as it is starting for fuel as well as starving for oil. Running over lean shortens the engine life drastically or it will engine up going bang. If you think you're to lean open the high speed needle give it more fuel and if it's still running good then you're lucky.
@@thebug4046 so I have been out of the nitro world for forever and I’m back in now. I have been running it on 33% Traxxas fuel and it runs good but on tank 4 of the break in process I went thru two glow plugs. And I ran out so don’t have anymore atm. But honestly I’ve been moving the high speed needle literally toward the rich direction the whole time since I started. Do you have any recommendations?
@@Cuervo0 ditch the 33% it's not good fuel got to much oil 16 to 20% oil way.... to much dye and the 3% extra isn't doing much. It's basically heli fuel. Go with a 30/9 blend fuel it will blow the doors off the 33% and the more oil you add the leaner it's gunna run as the oil takes up fuel volume and changes your AFR %%% the 30/9 blend will not where the engine out any faster like they say. However you will have a much bigger tuning window cooler temperatures and much better performance. Also switch to a OS LC4 Glow plug and it will be 100% better! I promise! And watch the Adam drake method for brake in will help lots
Hello If my Savage X 4.6 come with r5 glow plug, and I run it at under 0 degrees Celsius, what type of glow plug I need ? And at my Traxxas Revo 3.3, I find just 3232x glow plug. Can I ride with this regardless of the outside temperature? Thx
The R5 was a terrible choice plug for that engine it was too cold for it made the tuning terrible as well. Run a OS #7 it will tune and perform much better! And for the 3.3 OS LC3 is most common.. and yes you don't change plugs for outside temperature it doesn't work that way. Run the same plugs year round. As explained in the video they don't dictate engine temperature directly.

@@adrianstreet8330 ah yes. PAW engines are very nice i would love to have one some day! And yeah man covid sucks !
It definitely can drive people crazy if they're not used to it and and usually when the sleeve is worn out the engine will run as long as it's cool warm up to operating temperature shut off and will not restart till it's cold again if it's extremely tight when it's called means the sleeves are still good we're very little Break in time usually with a new engineer when you're uncertain of it's good to preheat them and keep the cylinder had wrapped with foil and keep the temperatures over 200゚F during your break and heat cyclin the heat cycling you can follow the atom Drake method for that
Get well soon, great plug detail.

OS LC3 plug is the best for Traxxas engines
Cheers bro 👌 iam now a bit more clued in on glowplugs 😁
Great video got a cheat sheet for what plugs go in which engine seems like you know them all pretty well
It usually if I'm uncertain of the engine I will take the cylinder head off and do a protrusion test to make sure

Interesting haha
Very cool vid. So is it safe to say that mostly big blocks run shorter plug, maybe medium/cold side and small block run short plug?
Get better soon
Yes very true! But it isn't seeming to get any worse just a little one I guess haha
Whoo thanks for another video!

The problem with the motor shutting off once the igniter is off I've actually bad this problem, the difference is that it seemed to be the crank bearing tried new glow plugs and all that stuff but no results.
Rod stretch or a really bad bearings can take put plugs as well.
Got a question : Do nitro engines kinda work like diesel or semi-diesel?
I have video explaining it
Bug
Got a question for you about the dynamite .19 Mach 2. I have a new one that has not been broke in yet. In your opinion how will it run on 30% nitro and 13% oil?
Should be just fine
Thanks for the 🎥.
No problem!
can you do a vid on compression, checking the piston/sleeve, how close to tdc the piston is related to when a pinch is needed, when compression is on the lower side and when best to repinch.
@@thebug4046 ya ive seen some of them they are great. thanks for the uploads they have helped a lot. nobody talks about this stuff or does videos. cheers lets have a few crispy molson ices and work on engines. id like to see more detailed breakdowns like this on the chainsaw engines!

Do you have any experience with the vx18 engines in some of the cheap hsp nitro cars? Also it dies almost every single time it tries to shift up a gear, thinking anout just swapping it out for an OS 18 tz
Yeah yes actually they are a very easy good tuning engine I've run several of them but they need the correct plug OS number 7 Make sure you have no fuel or exhaust system leaks
@@thebug4046 ok ill try a new plug and check on the exhaust, ill look for some factory needle settings too, manual doesnt have any. Using a body clip as an idle gauge lol, about .8mm, love your videos btw! Watch them while on the treadmill, have a great voice!
@@That_Puppet No problem buddy hopefully all goes well and check your fuel tank seal as well as your fuel lines and make sure your exhaust pressure tap is not plugged because if it is you will receive no fuel pressure and your factory settings will be flush on the high speed flush on the low speed and idle gap at 1 mm
@@thebug4046 great call on the plug! Car came with some no name plug in it and the coil is wavy almost to the point of touching the body of the plug, and its snow white, not silvery or gray. Ill try the os#7 plug soon as i get it, thank you thank you thank you!
Keep away from those HSP plugs, they are a real crap. Two of them melted into my engine. Never had any issue with OS plugs.
Thank you ...
Welcome!
@@thebug4046 thanks I think it’s still good
Can running the TRX 3.3 engine too rich wear out the glow plug as well?
Not really
@@thebug4046 thank you 🙏🏾 I appreciate you getting back to me!

Hello
If my Savage X 4.6 come with r5 glow plug, and I run it at under 0 degrees Celsius, what type of glow plug I need ?
And at my Traxxas Revo 3.3, I find just 3232x glow plug. Can I ride with this regardless of the outside temperature?
Thx
The R5 was a terrible choice plug for that engine it was too cold for it made the tuning terrible as well. Run a OS #7 it will tune and perform much better! And for the 3.3 OS LC3 is most common.. and yes you don't change plugs for outside temperature it doesn't work that way. Run the same plugs year round. As explained in the video they don't dictate engine temperature directly.

Sounds like your tired of ruining with the hobby with idiots, or ignorant people, defined: you don't know the truth, I don't mean your stupid some just believe whatever their told without research. There is science to everything...gee, sounds familiar in our political system, but let's not go there, Just the fact Mam, just the facts... Anyway I just started with these engines and with a background in thermodynamics what you say make sense. Instead of looking at it as a nitro engine I now look at it differently, if I know the science then my troubleshooting skills just elevated. Just the same if I research the life and habits of a trout I catch more trout. I'm glad I ran into you instead of the guy at the field who knows everything, but doesn't. I've worked with plenty of them and end up walking away and do what do best...fly. I love to help, but when you know the science and try to help and they brush you aside like they think I'm a "smarty pants, " it get frustrating because I really want to see them advance, I'd don't like seeing a awesome jet, crash unnecessarily. I have a degree in aeronautics and worked on every type of military, some cavilian, aircraft. Except hellacopters for years. I'm not bragging on myself I'm giving you information so you can decide to believe me or not. I've flown RC planes for years, electric. I found an old Freedom 20 float plane, cheap so I brought it to restore to original condition. It's propelled by an engine, a Taiwan pro 25 whatever that means. With no experience in SMEUIS engines, (a small engines with a unique ignition system) otherwise known as a glow, nitro, or diesel, engine...It's frecken 4am in the morning and I can't work in my shop because for some reason my wife is still asleep ! So I'm a grumpy old man right now.. This is great you just told me I have a bad plug. Because it runs great untill I pull off the ignition thingy it stops I put it back on real fast and it keeps going. After I rebuild it I did the unthinkable, like a ignorant engine rebuilder, I did it, I used the same old plug. We all can be idiots at one time or another. I placed a plug order right away. Thanks to your grumpy video, which I don't mind, I'm more interested in your knowledge as long as it's right I don't care how you deliver the info. thanks again I look forward to your next video.
Hey man no worries and I'm not grumpy about it I just have a odd ball sense of humor. And a different way of saying stuff. Yeah I don't like stupidity as I run into on a daily basis I think we all do. Haha I just like to crush the BS people have made up over the years that scares people away from the hobby or make it sound so exotic when it's not. The amount of nonsense people have made up over the years is unreal! Like saying you can't switch back to 20% if you run 30% or it will blow up NOT TRUE AT ALL!! lol or people that think just because it has a glow plug it's a Diesel and it's not. I get the point across and people usually catch on and leave a comment like oh I get it! Thank you for clearing that up now I'm on point! I don't know everything I will be the first to admit that but I know what's true and what's not.
Hey Bug, do turbo plugs have wider threads? Just picked up a Siri .23 and a rb.23 and their threads are definitely wider, a standard plug will not fit. Been in the hobby 17 years and I’m just realizing that they must be different? lol Anyways, just wanted your expertise on the subject.
Yes Turbo plugs are completely different they fit like no other plug you need the correct plug with the correct taper for your engines as they are different!
