My sons got quite an unusual job. He’s a Mortician. He quite often brings his work samples home. And I must say they do work - on aged skin like mine. Great video many thanks.
I rarely need a primer living in the UK and having normal skin, but when I do I use the ELF Liquid Poreless Putty Primer (despite also never liking the original version), it is excellent.
Years ago I tried the Hourglass Veil based on your recommendation- still to this day it's at the top of my list and I ALWAYS have it on hand. Oddly enough their newer one (Vanish) immediately turns my skin red and blotchy. Thanks for all you do....love your recommendations and videos!!!
I swear by the power grip primer, I have combo skin. In the winter it works magic and keeps my hydrated. Even now in the super hot summer it only get slightly shiny around my nose later in the day
Just ordered this after going reading reviews on it! I have both dry AND mature skin (64 y/o). Going to return Milk hydro grip because it pills so much on my skin and makes a mess of my makeup!
I live in Houston and use the Caliray & Thank Me Later under my Drmtlgy matte SPF and makes it last all day and boots its coverage!! Add a little spot concealer and *poof* instant gratification 🎉❤
I wish Onesize would have been more honest about the "noncomodegenic" aspect. Ethyhexyl Palmitate is rated 4 on the scale so as much as I would love to try this one because I am oily, it's not worth the risk of breakouts and hyperpigmentation for my acne prone skin. I know everyone is different so this could work wonders for lots of people. I will definitely check out the Vanish though! It is a struggle finding something that is for acne prone skin. So glad you did an updated video! I was excited to see your picks! ❤
I very much appreciate you mentioning the base. I'm finding silicone based primers just don't work for me (not exactly sure why. I have dry mature skin). They just slide around.
The Hourglass is my OG. I also like both of the Milk mattifying primers. I am 57 and my oil breaks through after only an hour! It's just really oily so I am always looking for recs! Will check out some of these!
I have been using Hourglass for years. One tube will last me 3(ish) years. I have tried others from low end to high end but always go back to Hourglass. I tend to purchase during Prime Days and get it for a pretty good price 😁
Thanks for all the work you put into these reviews. I'm not someone who wears primer often but when I do I like the Caliray So Blown. I have mature normal/dry skin with visible pores and it works perfectly to extend the life of my foundation and smooth over my texture without getting patchy or dry looking. I will be looking at some of your other recommendations 😊
I'm so glad you mentioned the Elizabeth Mott primer. It is the primer I reach for most often. I use it on no makeup days just because I love how it makes my skin look. I also love the Bobbi Brown primer you mentioned. Those two are my most used. I also love the Tatcha Silk Canvas primer, but I find myself reaching for the Bobbi Brown or Elizabeth Mott more and more.
I usually skip primer now. I just use my sunscreen and then pat the Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer on the couple spots on my cheeks with larger pores. I use the Mercier Ultra Blur powder and a setting spray.
Awesome review! Thank you for mentionning cruelty free products, i only support those. Very helpful. The Soopergoop unseen sunscreen 40 is the best primer ever! 2 products in 1. Blurs my pores, fine lines like no other & perfect for all skin type. Not too hydrating & not drying. Perfectly balanced:). Do Wonder on my combo dehydrated skin!
I’ve tried all of these and while I like some nothing beats my Tarte Timeless Smoothing primer. Pores and fine lines are my top concern and I haven’t found anything that makes my (mature combination) skin look as smooth. I did just buy the new O/S primer and while I don’t like it as a primer, I do like it on my crows feet and lines around my mouth. I think it beats the City Beauty, PTR, and the It Cosmetics products although the O/S isn’t marketed that way.
Hi Stephanie Revolution have a dupe for the Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched face base called superbase. It is fragrance free and much more affordable. As much as I like the scent of the original my rosacea doesn’t and the Revolution version therefore works really well for my extremely dry rosacea and eczema prone skin. My other most used is a green primer from Daniel Sandler as it really blurs the redness without turning orange on my pale skin ( a lot of green primers turn shades of beige and most are too dark for my skin tone). It blurs the pores a little but it’s reduced redness ability is my main reason for using it. Best wishes x
I've tried several of the primers you suggested. However, my current favorite is the Cover Girl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Primer in Velvet Blur. There are three other finishes for plumping dry skin, color correcting, or gripping that I haven't tried yet.
Thank you for all your recommendations . They always work great for me. Do you put primer with a powder foundation? If yes, which one do you recommend? Thank you ❤
Thanks for doing this. My daughter just gave me the niacinamide elf primer that I'll be trying so it was good to hear your review. I'm just so intrigued by the o/s. I'm so very grateful you're here for us !
Stephanie, have you tried, NYX Pore Filler? I have found it to be the best on the market. You only need to use a little, covers pores, stays matte, is long lasting and affordable. There is a learning curve on how to apply it, as it can pill a bit. But once you’ve mastered that, you can enjoy its benefits.
Fantastic video as usual. I purchased the one size recently and applied it wrong so I appreciate your thorough explanation of how to use it. I also agree with many of your primer picks. I too have very oily skin and live in a hot humid climate in Florida and all the ones you mentioned work the best for me.
Thanks for making this video! My Bare Minerals Good Hydration primer has been discontinued so I’m looking for a similar one. I’m going to purchase a few mini sizes from your recommendations & try them out :)
Hi Stephanie! I’ve got mature skin with a slight bit of oil on the nose. I really want to try the Caliray. I’ve heard such good things about it! You also got me interested in trying the Hourglass. I may get the travel size just to try! Great picks, thanks for the video! ❤
Such a great video on primers!! I’ve actually been curious about the caliray one. I can vouch for the Hourglass veil one. I live in Florida and the humidity is unreal. I sweat as soon as I leave the house. I spend a lot of time outside all day at parks through rain and sweat and water rides and my makeup lasts and I believe it’s that hourglass primer that does it! It’s my go to. I do want some other options though just to try out. Would you say the caliray one is as good as the hourglass? Or which would you recommend I try? I have oily skin on top of the lovely humid environment lol
Hi Stephanie, thank you so much for the thorough review of so many options. I have tried to do my own research on primers with silicone that break me out... and why!!?? So many foundations have them and don't cause a problem. Trial and error feels way to annoying/ stressful to risk the massive pore congestion. I have a couple water based primers... but they are not very effective and blurring pores, texture, etc. Any insight on why certain primers with silicone cause this... which silicones are the bigger culprits? I always think back to the OG - smashbox... it is the best! And I can NOT use it sadly. But over the years, I have run into the same issue with other primers. Anyway, sorry for the long winded-ness.... thank you for any insight / guidance you could offer.
I've tried that Danessa Myricks primer and just could never get it to work no matter how I used it. I also don't like the Milk Mattifying Primer, even though I seem to be in the minority there. It mattifies just fine, but every time I use it I find that I have more blackheads and other breakouts. Major bummer. The Hourglass primer is fantastic though! And I just recently purchased the Thank Me Later primer and I'm excited to try that one out.
Out of this list, I've only tried the Elf ones. My go to primer is still the Heimish Artless Base. But in the depths of winter, I will need more moisture, so I will have to try one of these.
I use the Makeup Forever HD foundation (I'm 64 with dry skin) so do I need water based or silicone based primer? I found this video looking for information on Milk primer pilling on my skin.
Hi! MUFE HD Skin has silicones at the top of the ingredient list and is also a waterproof formula. Waterproof formulas usually don't work well with water based primers like Milk Makeup's primers. I hope that helps!
I probably have 15+ primers in my "primer drawer" I stabled on purely by accident the CoverGirl essence foundation as primer. I bought it applied it and thought, this makes my skin look nice but.. I'm not wearing this as make up, so I put my foundation right on top, that was my best makeup day in a long time, I've since worn it under every different foundation I have and its perfect. I've tested by not using it. Nope it works. My primer drawer is getting very dusty.
You asked, so the primers I'm surprised you didn't mention are: *Revlon Photoready Prime Plus. All Skin types, Vit B5, HA, Blurs, Smooths, Fills fine lines. *Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firmx No Filter Primer. Idk, never tried it. Heard it's finicky, and I'd never pay that, but it's Angie's HG. 🙄 *NYX Blur Screen. Blurring Primer Sunscreen SPF 30. Does what it says. Thanks for the video, I might try that L'Oréal one, as I have the Age Perfect Radiant Serum Foundation. I've always wanted to try Bobbi's, and although I am lucky enough to afford it I will never pay that for a primer period. I am pink tax sensitive, and it never ceases to amaze me how easy it is for brands to get women to drop $30-$40+ bucks on one piece of makeup. Don't get me started on Mascaras. 😂
For years I had the Matte Primer vom Estee Lauder but they discontinued it I guess but I just ordered the Shiseido Primer and hope it’s working… thank your for your Video!
The Elizabeth Mott primer is great for oily skin, and so is the milk makeup primer. But no primer or moisturiser can work for all skin types. I have very oily skin, and can tell you that every time I try a product marketed for all skin types, or has the word 'dewy' or 'glow' I end up looking like a grease ball 😅
Thank Stephanie! It's super humid in the Northeast. Out of the lower priced primers, which one works best to minimize shine? Nothing seems to be working right now!
Helpful video. I have to find my Thank Me Later and see how it would work with the foundations I have been wearing lately. What type of primer works best for powder foundations because when I am in a hurry I find myself grabbing them
Have you ever tried Joah Blur activator mineral primer? I have heard that it is a dupe for the Hourglass. I would love to hear your opinion if you are familiar with the product. Thank you for all of the thought and work you put into your content!💕

Hi there. Would it make sense to put a thicker, pore filling primer on first (e.g elf putty), to first fill in the pores. Then after it dries, another smoothing primer (e.g. the Hourglass).. what do you think ? just a little of each
And I’m sorry, but your criticism attempt makes no sense here. I’ve been testing and reviewing beauty products for over eight years now. I’m fairly certain I know how to test and compare products by this point. 🤦🏼♀️ But it’s understandable if you don’t do this for a living, why you wouldn’t understand what’s entailed with constant testing, comparing, and reviewing products on multiple platforms. First, the levels are visible in only five of them. The Hourglass is quite possibly my eighth bottle that I’ve talked about dozens upon dozens of times here, as I stated in the video. I guess I could have emptied it out to make it more “credible”, but that would have been wasteful and silly. I’ve repurchased others several times and have thoroughly tested all of these primers. A few, like the two elf gripping primers are for drier skin than I have, so they of course have less usage - because I tested them and reach for them in colder, drier weather (which is like 3 months out of the year here) but don’t have them in my daily rotation. Since it takes a pea-sized amount of primer for each use, how much do you think should be gone when one rotates several primers in their daily life? Even testing a primer for two solid weeks wouldn’t make a dent in it and that’s more than plenty of time for a solid review - more time than most people give products these days on social media.
This was a helpful video, thank you! Would you consider a follow-up video where you show your favorite foundation to pair with each of these primers?
