    "Is anyone still watching this sanding ..."?
    Of course! I've got no problem watching someone performing "Oh Glorious Sanding"! (Mads - Sail Life reference)
    😄
    Besides, one never knows what they may miss that could be of use later. So, yes, I watch all the way through.

    You are the best boat worker I’ve ever seen, I love your finishing skills, she looks better than new. And I’m from a island in Sweden and I have seen a lot of boat builders that don’t have your skills. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

    Can’t get enough of the sanding. I rewound it twice. You should get together with Mads and do some ‘Duelling sanding’. 😂

  • @The_R_Vid
    @The_R_Vid หลายเดือนก่อน

    I appreciate this is a year old, so I doubt you see new comments now, but if so, I'd be curious to know why the large hatches were installed with the hinges forward. I appreciate that that was the orientation of the original ones, but on the boat I learned to sail on as a teenager (a beautiful Ericson 34), the large hatches opened with the hinges aft, so that you could get a nice 'scooping' effect of fresh air when at anchor. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the whys of installing the hatches with hinges forward. Thanks for such great content!
    and you can *almost* never have too much sanding. It communicates just how much work it takes to produce a quality result!

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a safety thing, if hit by a wave the hatch is forced closed not open. However on my boat that I took to the Caribbean the fwd hatch opens as you describe to help scoop in the breeze at anchor. So there is a difference between what the safety standards here say you should do and what is best in-practice as I would not sail with the hatch unlocked anyway.

    You have the best videos. When do you know when to use filler or gelcoat?

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. Gelcoat is purely decorative, the top surface, it is not there for any structural purpose. A filler can just be there just to fill holes and gaps in a non structural way or you can get/use semi-structural fillers depending on what’s in them, there are also structural bonding and filling materials available. What you use really depends on what you are trying to achieve in a particular job/repair. Hope this helps

    Did you use same sealant for the hatches as the portlights?

    Since Mads has now moved on from Oh Glorious Sanding, at last we now have a dance music mix with Oh Glorious Sanding to watch! This is quite niche, but needed. No skipping here. More sanding with EDM please.
    Thanks for the guide coat explanation. What grades of sandpaper do you go through? You mentioned 80 and 240?

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, thanks Greg. Are fir grades of paper… all of them. Initial flat with 80 and 240 then 400 all dry. Then wet with 600 upwards normally stopping at 1200 as you can then compound polish from there but not much point in going beyond 1500 as finishing compound and a decent polishing machine with a wool mop does the job nicely.

  • @thepigwillfly5869

    Nice video....top notch work as always. What sealant did you use to bed the hatch?

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Sabatack used to seal onto the deck.

  • @mickey1299
    @mickey1299 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You've done a seriously good job of making the interior surfaces of the deck good , well done mate . I actually thought it was some kind of removable trim during the introduction sequence . But i gotta ask , why did you choose a non flange hatch as opposed to a flanged hatch , to match that of what was originally fitted ? .

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. The corner radius of the new hatch does not match the corner radius of the deck (and the original hatch) so it would have required some deck mods to make it fit. So I generally fit this one on co32’s and normally it’s a quick replacement but the aperture was so grotty on Lottie I could not leave it as it was.
      On my own boat (which is from a different manufacturer) I have Lewmar hatches with the inner flange and it uses an internal plastic trim. The issue with the trim kits is that they slowly degrade in the UV and become brittle.

    • @mickey1299
      @mickey1299 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RefitandSail Yeah i totally agree , you couldn't leave it . But that was a seriously good job mate . I totally understand you walking away at one point . I do the same myself , when something doesn't go right , nothing seems to go right . So you're better off just walking away , and forget about it for a while . Normally , just like you , after having a good cussing session .
      Yeah the plastic trims are not good news either . I've spent a lot of time repairing mine on the motorhome . I learnt to plastic weld , a couple of years ago , mainly to repair a bumper . But i repair all kinds now .

    • @mickey1299
      @mickey1299 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RefitandSail Oh and by the way , i didn't fast forward either . There are a lot of people on TH-cam who enjoy watching the sanding , but to me it shows the job is not quite as straight forward , as you may imagine . More true to life , like . I think the fast forward is a happy medium .

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mickey1299 yep, walking away is sometimes necessary, better to come back fresh than make things worse by pushing on when not in the mood!

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mickey1299 I massively cut down the sanding but left enough in to show what was happening. Refinishing gelcoat is very time intensive but lasts longer and is tougher than a paint job.
