All about the sailing and refit works I do on boats I own, work on or just get to play with.
I particularly enjoy Solo sailing and do a lot of work on Contessa 32 yachts so if that’s your thing then stay tuned.

Westerly Yacht Headlining Replacement + New Windows And Insulation
This is up there are one of my least favourite jobs when doing yacht refit works but if you own a Westerly sailing boat or yacht with similar vinyl headlining their replacement is inevitable so in this video I show you how we go about removal, preparation, insulating and then fitting of new interior linings with new Lewmar Windows.

About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

Rudder Removal, Draining, Repair, Bearings and Refitting (Race-boat Refit)

When buying this virtually abandoned SJ320 performance cruiser-racer the rudder was stuck in the hard-over position so it was firmly on the list of refit jobs. Removal of the rudder was a challenge and repairs carried out to finish with a serviceable and safe rudder to reinstall. The boat is now one step closer to launch and sailing (then racing in 2025). Nice job. Just in case, I would have reseal those chainplates on the outside..
That’s fair, if there was any sign of leaking I would have done the same but it was not done long ago and I didn’t want to disturb the newish decking in that area and make a bigger job.
I used copious amounts of asethone, rags, scrapers and elbow grease to remove that damn snot. It took days just for a 27 footer's main cabin. I still have to do the forward cabin, and the thing making me postpone that job is the removal of contact adhesive. Dreading it.
Just came across your channel, following with interest as I've got same job to do in my Solaris cat
Welcome aboard!
I'm here to (CONFIRM) post that I seen with my own eyes a gunboat 80 catamaran on TH-cam video at "round the island race 2024" achieve 24.1 knots! A gunboat 80 catamaran clocking 24.1 knots! Wow, simply amazing that a 80 FOOT CATAMARAN can clock 24.1 knots!
Hi George can you repeat the name of the firm that makes these insulation panels or where we can get them , much appreciated! Fine video again 👌👌👌
Various companies sell the insulation, google self adhesive insulation or campervan conversion insulation and lots of options will pop up
More talk than work!
Yeah, probably but if I don’t explain what’s happened and being done I get a bunch of questions or complaints about skipping the explanation so try to get a happy medium. Can’t keep everyone happy all the time 😅
Awesome video! Gave me some ideas, I'm going to be changing all the port lights on our boat and not looking forward to it.... but needs must. What is the vinyl you're using? It looks perfect. I do worry about you using contact adhesive without a mask though! Please mask up, it's known to go straight into the brain and give people terrible tumours.
The vinyl I prefer to use is Nautolex, this colour is “champagne” but you can get all colours. I like this vinyl because unlike some others the material has a texture but it’s not as aggressive as some other suppliers so it is easier to keep clean.
Graphics look great and superb name choice!
Great Video, George. And bring your Furioso back soon! We love her, and you, too! Best wishes always from the largest isle of the Marianas chain.
Thanks, Furiosa is back soon.
Hi George. Great stuff. I can't find the link for the dremmel grinding bits. Could you send to please. Thanks Phil Also was it a Makita 1901?
Doing this to my westerly discuss bloody nightmare 😂 great video wish you had done it sooner didn't know about the abrasive wheels
Awesome, keep the Corsair stuff coming George!
@@BeetrootGeorge I had hoped to do a series of vids on the Corsair refit but time/word pressure has meant I have been unable to do so. After part to that will be it for this particular refit.
Hello Wonder if you would let me know where you get the insulation foam and the vinyl? Thanks Andy
@@bigkfaekca nautilux vinyl from Kayospruce (who are mostly trade but will Sell to consumers). The insulation was from another supplier… can’t recall the name now but Google is your friend. Look for van conversion insulation
Fascinating video. I did exactly the same on my ‘92 Rustler 36. Your description of the ghastly state of the GRP after removing the vinyl was right on the button. I removed the “rest” by scraping, with some limited use of a hot air gun. It took ages and was difficult! I didn’t replace the vinyl or the ply headlining, deciding to fill, sand, and paint. Although to be realistic, it was fill, sand, fill sand……prime, sand, paint, sand, paint. It took forever, but did give one positive, it increased headroom by about 15 mm. On the hull sides, and the headlining in the forecabin I used a combination of 20 mm closed cell foam, covered with vinyl, to improve insulation.
@@billfromgermany my folks had the same linings on their Rustler 36 and it was drooping when they sold it. Nice boat though, very solidly built.
@ I forgot, I also used ceiling (oak laths) to cover the closed cell insulation in visible areas, and the vinyl only in lockers. The Rustler is a nice boat, and inspires confidence even in heavy weather. But I’m getting on a bit, and would like to move to a Fisher 37, only if I could find one in half decent condition. Refitting/rebuilding my Rustler is not something I want to repeat.
Love Westerly's!
@@Marread yeah, I have owned a couple of them. Can’t say I love them all but they certainly made some very good boats

@@bekirbayburt6157 fair comment, there was more talk at the start of this one than normal but trying to explain what had been done as I hadn’t filmed the prep work.
Me thinks that one droopy panel in the vbirth did not receive clamps?
@@McBrian_is_BACK all where clamped, there is a radius between the deck and coach roof side so the plywood won’t go hard up against the deck
I'm not sure why you'd put liner between the deckhead and the backing plate for the chain plate fitting - don't you want a solid contact between those surfaces?
It makes for a neater job and the vinyl will be squashed totally flat having been clamped indeed the plate.
Just iin time for my next project. Thanks yo,u.
I don't like talking. Half the video is talk...should i do thumbs down then? lol
@@redsailor101 that’s a fair comment and I’m aware that I did do a lot of talking in this one, particularly up front but I was trying to explain how I had done the prep work (which I hadn’t filmed) and if I did not explain that then I’d be asked how it was done in the comments so can’t really win on that one. Half my viewers want the detail and the explanations the other half want to just see the works and so I try to do a happy medium.
Great Video and tips! What's the name of where you buy the insulation from and/or do you have a link? Cheers!

I sprayed the walls with a layer of contact adhesive before and let dry before fitting the insulation sheet This assures the glue backed insulation sheet won't peel off in the future. Works well and consolidates the wall surface too. 😊

@@spindly_killer_fish 😬
if you’ve got an older Westerley and you need a new headliner, do the work yourself it’s messy but you can use the right equipment then go to Hawk house they’ll sell you a kit for about 500 quid rather than paying about 5000 to this boat butler dude 🥴
Horses for courses...
@@Anglosaxon69 this boat butler dude is only too happy for westerly owners to do this themselves as there are other jobs I’d much rather be doing. It is, after all, one of the reasons I make the vids. Personally I don’t really like the vinyl that HH sell, when I last looked it mostly had a very coarse imprinted pattern. Far prefer the Nautilux stuff I have used here. I also don’t like the sewn kits (for the reason in the video) but each to their own. Ps, you lost definitely can’t buy a complete headlong kit for a Corsair for 500 😂. It would be a significant multiple of that!
Thank you for this video as requested :)it is very much appreciated. looking forward to part two, will that show some of the installation of the tongue and groove type marine ply?
@@RosemaryS2127 I don’t really cover making up the ply boards, they are just screwed up the same as the old ones.
@@RefitandSail Okay George, thank you for that information.🙂
I removed the original vynil lining the last refit season. It's slavery, it should be illegal, it took all my freetime for a month from my 25 ft Maxi. I used a small 12V Parkside polishing tool (like a drill) with a straight wire bush and isopropyl alcohol. While IPA doesn't dissolved the glue as well as acetone or the Palmatex glue remover, the two latter made a huge mess with the spinning brush, IPA was cleaner and less toxic (I still used gas mask). I faired the whole interior with one or two layers of polyesther premixed CSM gluing compoung, then applied 3 layers of polyesther gelcoat (the last is topcoat) as you showed in one of your old videos. The end result isn't as beautiful as your job with the new lining, but probably will outlive me :)
This has become one of my favourite boat restoration channels top work as always George
@@buzzkillington3354 thanks ☺️
Wheb I built my boat in the 1990s I looked at many and the carpet and vinal finishings was not satisfactory ae all. As I had many scrap pieces of grp lying around with no real purpose except maybe to be thrown away I decided to make 2 molds with smooth and patterned Formica sheets. I laid up panels and even colored them, which is 100% optional. The end result was in basically indestructible panels easy to fit and clean.
Have you considered investing a couple hundred quit in a standing mixer? I have one from "Kitchenaid" that can sling a couple kilos of dough like it's nothing.

Do you have a source for the heat/ vacuum pads? And do you use a fluid trap in your vacuum setup?
Great channel I just discovered. Question, does the b2b get confused or do unwanted things if you go to combine on your switch? Sorry if already asked.
Thanks, great tips and super informative. I will change the way I gelcoat going forward
Is it ok to do this with the rudder still attached to the boat?
Can it be used in a Caravan or a boat 12v?
Just to add a slight correction. The cycles on lithium cells are measured in 100% cycles ( ie two 50% cycles = 1 cycle, five 20% cycles = 1 cycle ) or at least on every cell data sheet I have ever read. I seem to remember some company once changing it, and basically everyone complained so they released a new data sheet with the correct 100% cycles on them. Some data sheets do vary in how much usable energy is stored after their spec. The new EVE MB31 cells for instance (314Ah) have greater than 70% after 8000 cycles on their datasheet... which is still 220Ah which is still perfectly usable. If anyone is still reading this... we have now reached the point where the depth of discharge is now irrelevant, as age itself is a bigger factor in degrading cells on a solar system. And for anyone wondering, 8000 cycles is about 1 cycle every day for 21 years.
Great video! I am working on my 50 year old Grampian 26 sailboat and planning on doing exactly what you just showed! All the best from Central Florida.
