I think y’all should figure out a way to do ranked choice voting, not eliminate any phones, and test all 16 (or however many phones get included, you could have as many as you want). You could have them separated into pools that are made by price, features, etc or just completely randomized. That way instead of just a contest of “this camera took this one photo better in this moment,” it’s a true test where every camera gets the same shot.
Yeah i agree do something like each phone shoot in 4-5 different scenarios at day and night and let the crowd come in and see how many photo they are preferred out of all 5 photo and give a score based on that like the pixel took 5 photo and people love it all so they go yes for each photo on either a yes or a no on instagram so we have 5yes out of 5 for pixel , iphone 3/5 something like that and we can rank all of them later on in the end. and 5 photo can be break in to main camera , potrait shot , dynamic range test ( against harsh sun light ) or picture of a color pallet to see how well the software handle those color , and night shot

Maybe to use the pro camera as a reference, and truly appreciate the HRD, colors, white balance, textures… I also think that every phones is made for different types of photos, like for example Samsung with the 108Mp camera shines when it comes to detail, but maybe the HDR isn’t the best; so maybe the bracket should be more like a ligue, more that one photo, and the top 10 move on (in terms of more points overall, or more win matches)
Pixel 5A with a 12.2-megapixel camera beating pixel 6pro having a 50-megapixel camera says a lot about how much the photo depends on processing rather than just the number of megapixels.
Y'know what would be really interesting is that after they created their predictions, is if they keep taking pictures each round with their predicted winner (even if it loses) to see how it compares with the winners of each round
One thing I've noticed in this test that's interesting is that to my eye the iPhone 13 Pro has better contrast & sharpness than its competitors but it white balance was completely off in comparison. Honestly I think if Apple can fix the white balance it would win more often... But I don't know maybe I'm wrong.
Always a fun video to watch and see the results. I do think it shouldn't be single elimination though. And social experiment time : post photos of MKB slightly smirking in one photo and slightly frowning in another and expressionless in another. Take all the photos from the same camera but pretend they were taken by different phones. See if people are just naturally drawn to the facial expressions rather than the phone.
I think if the iPhone 13 didn’t have that bad green shift, it might have made it further! Would love to see this exact bracket re-lettered but color corrected and see how the results change! (That’s the techy photographer in me coming out)
I am pleased to say that in the first round I always picked the photo of what I consider to be a better phone with an exception of picking Motorola over iPhone because it made Marques look better instead of the window.
Next year I want to see an editor's bracket, where only the MKBHD studio team votes blind. Even better would be collabing w/ Who's The Boss, Mr. Mobile, Unbox, and the other top phone channels!
I love this channel. Somewhat confused about the microphone distortion. A median of -12dB with peaks up to -6 for digital audio works wonders for recording. Then pushing it to -1 (not over) does the trick. No need to get anywhere near that distortion level during recording. Just play it safe, there's no background noise anyway ;). HAPPY 2012 Marques & Crew!
would love to see these vids be 30-60 minutes long, even if it will bring a bit of dead air here and there. like to put these in bg while I work to soak up the studio vibes
I feel like for this challenge none of the pictures should be taken inside the studio cuz that place is overall well and evenly lit. Which is barely ever the case in a real life situation

The candle and ribbon in the second round looked so blant that people chose fuller colors. The subtle details on the candle flame and cookie color/texture were too small on the otherwise empty table. Same with ROG vs OP9P but honestly people either reeealy love full red or the camera was too high so the clapper reflects much more light.
as a OP9 Pro owner, I can understand the very high ratings. Out of the box with no edits, ultra wide and normals pics are just great. The last photo annoyed me because the difference in distance/ lense was so massive that it was no comparison.

Maybe next year you can have a blind smartphone camera test with tech TH-camrs. Let’s see if that gives interesting results too. If it does, it would really change the way we think about Smartphone cameras.
