    I just got the tulip neon kit it makes all the colors of the rainbow and comes out amazing! I used about 50% cotton and 50% polyester shirts and the colors faded a little bit so I suggest to use 100% cotton for more vivid colors. I also got to excited and unwrapped mine after 8 hours normally for the color to come out the best leave in for 24 hours (: I suggest you do the DIY videos with a damp shirt just so people know it works best and also show the end result.

    Hi nice video I learned a lot and it's fun, my question / comment is if I'm only doing one color on a white T shirt can i just place the shirt ( after I swirl it and use the elastics to hold it in place) in a tub of RIT dye that i have leftover from another project ? will it soak thru to much and eliminate the white swirls ? Peace !

    • @TulipColorCrafts
      @TulipColorCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Moda! Great question, we recommend covering your fabric with plastic after applying your dye to keep it damp for 6 to 8 hours; this helps the dye really soak in and reach its full color concentration potential. Once the tie-dye project has set for 6-8 hours, make sure you thoroughly rinse the fabric under running water until the water runs clear, then remove the rubber bands or ties, and wash as instructed.

    I have made shirts before at my high school with some other dye brand, and we always pre-soaked the shirts. When I bought one of your kits, I noticed it said pre-soaking is not required. I was apprehensive, but I went along with it...the dye bounced right off! I've read the comments and see that you supposedly need to wash it first to remove the "sizing", but I don't think that's the main issue. Even watching this video, watching the way that the dye lands on the shirt, it looks like it's not really soaking in or covering evenly. Dry shirts just don't seem to tie dye very well -sizing or no sizing. Having the shirt damp is very important for even color dispersal in my experience. You should modify your instructions to say that pre-soaking is recommended, especially if you are not going to wash the shirt beforehand.

    • @TulipColorCrafts
      @TulipColorCrafts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there ... thank you for your feedback! We do still recommend washing fabrics before you dye them because the chemical coating on them that helps repel stains and keeps fabric looking nice while in the stores (sizing), in our experience, often prevents dyes from completely absorbing into the fabric until it's been washed off. If you don't want to wash your shirt beforehand, then yes, pre-soaking in soda ash would be very helpful! Dampness is definitely important if you are attempting to achieve even color dispersal, but dry fabric can be dyed as well, depending on the technique and the look one is trying to achieve. Our dye expert Lauri does do some dry tie dye from time to time, but always makes sure to wash the fabric before drying and dyeing. Pre-soaking is definitely a personal choice but not necessary with One-Step Tie Dye ... although we have come across many people who love to use soda ash before tie dyeing!

    @Sqm.120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    does the shirt have to be wet when your putting the dye?

    • @TulipColorCrafts
      @TulipColorCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! We generally recommend washing your fabric and leaving it damp before tie-dyeing, as the dye has an easier time saturating the fabric when it’s wet. But depending on the technique and the look you want, you can apply dye to dry fabric. Just make sure the fabric has been washed (if it’s new) to remove the sizing. Applying dye to dry fabric results in more color saturation but less uniform permeation throughout the fabric.

    Hello! I tried to do this recently but the shirt repelled all the paint! the shirt was dry though, do you think I should wet it slightly or is it due to the kind of fabric? thanks!!

    • @TulipColorCrafts
      @TulipColorCrafts  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there ... Did you wash and dry the shirt before adding the dye? It's important to wash the shirt before dyeing it because generally fabrics in stores are coated with this chemical called "sizing" that keeps them from wrinkling. Unfortunately, sizing will also prevent the dye from absorbing into the fabric so you'll definitely want to wash it first for better dye absorption. You can then dye the fabric damp right out out of the washing machine or dry it first. It just depends on the type of dye effects you want to create! And make sure that your fabric is 100% natural fiber like cotton for best results; artificial fiber fabrics won't absorb the dye very well or at all. Good luck with your project! We hope this helps!

  • @TulipColorCrafts
    @TulipColorCrafts  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Nutss329 Yes, after you're finished dying both sides, wrap them in plastic to set for 6-8 hours. Then you rinse the garment until the water runs clear, and put it through a wash cycle at the hottest temperature for the fabric you used to permanently set the color. It will stay vibrant washing after washing!

  • @TulipColorCrafts
    @TulipColorCrafts  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sourstraw16 As long as your garment is wet, it will absorb the dye. It doesn't have to soak for an hour...

No 2 shirts are going to come out the same so it's pointless to show the color and amount of dye you put on a particular shape if you're not going to show the end result. And if I'm not mistaken, the measly amount of dye you're putting on the shirt comes nowhere NEAR looking like or having the coverage of the shirt you show at the end. Waste of time!!

      +Harry Moore Hi Harry ... we're so sorry to hear that you are having trouble with fading! Are you using fabrics that are 100% natural? (Like cotton, rayon or silk) ... Blended fabrics and fabrics made with synthetic fibers (like polyester) will fade easily or not absorb the dye at all. You'll also want to make sure that you wash your new fabrics prior to dyeing to remove the chemical called "sizing" that is on most fabrics (to help keep them stain and wrinkle free); sizing can affect how well the fabrics absorb dye. Please email us at love@ilovetocreate.com ... We would be happy to work with you to help ensure you have a more positive experience with our dyes in the future.

      +iLove ToCreate I was wondering if it was possible to do both crumple and swirl on the same shirt?

    • @TulipColorCrafts
      @TulipColorCrafts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there ... Yes, it IS possible but it will require a little extra diligence when applying dye. =) You'll want to choose where you want the spiral, then twist the fabric a few times and secure, leaving the ends unbound by rubber bands (instead of twisting the entire shirt into a swirl). The part that is left unbound, you can crumple up and apply dye over the crumples, and for the spiral section, you'll want to make sure to apply the dye carefully to each wedge shape so that the spiral turns out. Does that help? Let us know if you need clarification on any details ... Good luck!
