  • In today's episode, I chat with Dr. Therese Posas-Mendoza, a Filipino US IMG and recent graduate of Rheumatology fellowship. She talks about how her medical school help her get to where she is now, the number of residency programs she applied to + number of interviews she got, what made her stand out during the match process, what it was like managing being a mom, wife & resident all at once, her clinical experience in Hawaii, applying to fellowship + how it's different from applying to residency, why she chose to subspecialize in rheumatology and a lot more!
Feel free to follow and reach out to Dr. Therese on Instagram:

I love listening to the IMG series while driving to work. It’s like my little dose of inspiration. I’m an old IMG working full time here in the US.

Thank you for this episode! I am currently going through the process of preparing for USMLE. I have barely started and already feel overwhelmed. Watching your videos really inspires me to keep on going no matter how difficult it is going to be.

I always appreciate your videos like these, Dr. Kristina ❤️ I'm on my Finals week for 3rd year of Med school and been seriously considering having my residency in the US so this has been really inspiring being able to see a lot of our fellow Filipinas and Filipinos having residencies there too. It really is my dream. I didn't really have a goal before about what to do after graduating, but when I realized that this was possible, it's something I really want to do. Wishing you the best on your journey too, I'm so excited for you! Gonna binge watch your videos after Finals week haha! Again, thank you so much!!! ❤️

Thoroughly enjoyed this interview. Congrats Ther! Just to comment on the fellowship bit. I think a reason why some doctors opted to do a fellowship instead, whether it is through matching or outside a match, is because they probably have no intention to practice in the US and just aimed at bringing back what they learned to the Philippines. I think it would be nice to discuss in the Summit if doing a fellowship first increases someone's chances of matching for residency the following year. The fellowship could count as a USCE and maybe if an IMG could impress the attendings during her fellowship, this may just help her match for residency in the same hospital after completing fellowship or get a really good LOR. I have heard of people who have taken this route and succeeded.

Hey Cori! Nice to hear from you. Definitely think that may be an option but a long and arduous one as international fellowships are not ACGME accredited and not available in every institution. So if it worked and got you into residency, you would still need to repeat the entire usmle, residency, fellowship process again from scratch

public health delivery in the philippines probably needs a complete overhaul.. and I fully agree that doing residency in the country is not at best optimal compared to western countries..but you have to admit that going through med educ and residency in the country, no matter how heirarchal and imperfect, have prepared you well in your residency here in the US.. so chuck it up to experience and suck it up
