I just came off a 12 day water fast, supplementing with salts (magnesium, potassium, and sodium). I got some severe chills on day 5 (keto flu), but after that i had mental clarity like never before. I lost the urge to eat, and will be doing 20 days. My goal is to hit 45 days, but will speak to a doctor to make sure my bloodwork is ok. Coming off these type of diets is dangerous if you decide to go and binge eat immediatly, as the stress could hurt your heart. A 3-7 day, probably not, but a 30 day and beyond, yes. My goal is 45 days as some people have cured their arthritis, reversed prediabetes completely, and fat loss to me is secondary, etc.
Having done intermittent fasting, OMAD for the last 4-5 years ive learned to realize when my habit of eating vs actually need food is real. Like you said, awareness of ALL stresses need to be analyzed and applied. The awarenesses of the whole system of the body (physical, mental and spiritual, i.e. emotional) need to be accounted for. BTW this usually becomes aware to me in distress in my bowel movements, when enough is enough.
A good term to describe what you're talking about is "hormetic stress," which is finding the right balance of stress for your body. This video was insightful into considering fasting options. As I seek to finish my first 72 hour fast, I do tend to disgree with your aversion to discomfort in that I have to get through the overly hungry and uncomfortable parts so that my body properly engages in autophagy towards the second half of my fast which is my ultimate goal. Granted you're talking about intermittent fasting or fasting on a regular basis, so it's a little different in finding something sustainable, long term, in that regard. Just some of my thoughts! Thanks.
Good to know thanks, I would agree if you are doing a 3-day fast you simply have to go through the discomfort to get the benefits. But the great part is after the 3 days are done it's over. You've gone through the stress, your body has gone through autophagy and you have gained the benefits. Then you can very quickly go back to normal eating patterns. I was trying to differentiate between the simple discomfort of being hungry, which I have frequently gone through for short and long-term fasting, versus an illogical feeling of need and want, that was putting my body in a state of fight or flight and was not making me healthier but sicker. Good luck with finishing your fast!
There’s levels to this. I just tapped out on a 54 hour fast with only water and I was dying in a good way. I won’t eat until another 20-24 hours. I can’t wait for the warmer weather so that I could tone it down with more outdoor activities.
Good to hear your insights on food, discipline and how to notice if you're overdoing it. I've been eating 2 meals between 12 & 7pm for a year and have lost 26kg with no problems. The aim was to stop harming my body with the high carb processed rubbish I was eating. I really enjoy eating nutrient-dense unprocessed foods now. It's a great feeling knowing you're feeding your body well. Love instant coffee - I don't restrict it, except none after 7pm. Ground coffee doesn't agree with me so I avoid it.
I’ve been digging a 5hr window with breakfast and lunch after a workout. Always meeting caloric needs. I think there’s a lot of ways to do IF, but people willing to do it may be prone to extremes. It has to be about sustainability and enjoyment
I’m in the middle of a water fast. It’s Friday afternoon. Last thing I ate was Sunday night around 9pm. I’m down 13lbs since Monday morning. I believe everything you were experiencing that was “dark” is because of mindset and mental toughness. I’ve gotten hungry idk how many times. I drink one black coffee and water. Sometimes I put Celtic sea salt in my water. Today I didn’t even have a coffee. And I feel great.
any additions like coffee will technically break your fast. If weight loss is your goal you’re good to go. Black coffee and stevia/monkfruit sweeteners are safe, and won’t trigger your insulin response. But some of the autophagy benefits might be lost. I fasted for 35 days in August just water and black coffe/tea. Having something else to drink is very needed 😅
@@madisonsnellings8501 I was wondering about this- the green tea I've been drinking is technically zero calories though. I'm on hour 42 of water, black coffee tea, and salt. First time. I'm only shooting for 72 hours so I'm wondering if I even really need electrolytes. Do electrolytes and non caloric tea really interfere with autophagy? Is there any scientific literature?
@@ataylor992 it’s really hard to say to be honest, unfortunately there’s not a lot of meta-analysis on this. This is what I’ve heard from experts and water fasting communities.
@@wandayonder9772 There are a range of benefits of fasting while only drinking water. Biologically our bodies our meant to fast on occasion, as you can imagine a hunter gatherer being without food for a number of days. You need roughly 36+ hours of fasting for autophagy to truly get going. This process is why I started water fasting. This is when old, dysfunctional genetic material in our bodies are broken down and recycled. In addition you will reach therapeutic levels of ketosis, human growth hormone spikes 5 fold (mostly to preserve muscle while you burn your fat), and towards the end of a three day fast (between hour 60-72) your body actually produces stem cells from your bone marrow which turn into a replacement cell for any of the old dysfunctional genetic material that has been recycled out of your body. During autophagy, certain types of cancers have been shown to go into remission. That is to say activating this process can be a form of cancer prevention. In addition you can obviously expect greater levels of insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.

Interesting, thank you.

What's the purpose of your water fast?
