Never been a huge Sum41 fan, but man, everything about this is perfect. Their tone, the sound engineering, the vocals. This isn't just "let's prove we can metal"; the love is absolutely there.
Wow......I felt the exact opposite but I guess to each their own. Soulless guitar, forced "grit" in the vocals. The only good part about this performance was the drums and the sound engineer doing his best to make these guys sound good.

I just love how Sum 41 have really grown as performers. They sound incredibly tight now, and Deryck sounds SO GOOD now. If you look up old performances, they kinda sounded mediocre, but now, they're totally killing it. This was a great Metallica tribute!

Benji 41 I agree. almost every other pop punk band from the 2000s has gone full-on pop by now, like All Time Low for example. Blink in 2019 sucks too now. Sum 41 was the only band that went in a direction that I actually liked after emo killed pop punk in the late 2000s.
I guess they just wanna stick to their roots. It makes them stick out more anyways. I wish more bands would cover stuff like old punk songs and shit. At least it would be better than the pop covers.

I mean, it’s Metallica. Not the toughest stuff to play. Most beginners start off learning Metallica riffs. Yeah they did good, but it’s nothing special. Me and my bro jam the same songs no issue

Some Metallica is not difficult, I'll give you that. Some is not the easiest. Especially trying to play all downstrokes like James instead of alternate picking.
@@sd5775 I’ve been playing almost 20 years. Point is, anyone who takes guitar fairly seriously can learn Metallica riffs at least. I was just jamming master of puppets with my bro. I down pick the whole song the way it was recorded. It definitely isn’t the easiest song to play for beginners due to the dexterity and speed involved with the Down picking, but it’s the rare Metallica song that can give a beginner to moderate some trouble. Metallica is my 4th favorite band of all time so I’m not hating on them, just pointing out to the non guitarists and musicians who think it’s some phenomenon that sum 41 can play these well. I’m a casual sum 41 fan as well. They were huge when I was in middle school in the early 2000’s

I've played with couple drummers back in the day that it just didn't fit. So it's hard to be tight and precise like this song is unless you have the right people together.

Freaking hell the sound is beyond amazing. The Kempers sound badass. It also helps greatly that the drums have sound shields to help with leakage. Amazing live sound.
I remember seeing them doing this at the hall of fame induction years ago and being blown away by how good they were. As a fan of both bands I absolutely loved it. What a blast from the past.
Ironically, Sum41 do some of the best Metallica covers out there. I remember watching MTV Icon back in the day where they had first done it, and Metallica had totally dug it. Just as I did.

A while back in Tucson, AZ, KFMA Day , as I was entering the show at Tucson Electric Park , Sum 41 was playing Seek And Destroy, I can still remember how good it sounded.
It’s so obvious that they’re huge fans. Really well done. Also it’s great to see a brown guitarist! I know maybe it sounds derivative but it’s really great to see artists who did well who look like you.
I was at a Sum 41 concert about 15 years ago. During a quiet moment I yelled out "PLAY SOME METALLICA!!" and the band stopped what they were about to do while the entire pit Booo'd me for like a really awkward amount of time! Super embarrassing!!!!

GODDAMN. Once again, Sum 41 proves they are a metal band playing pop punk. KILLER performance. That was so tight. Deep in the pocket the whole way through. These guys should do a full thrash record; I’d buy it in a heartbeat!
