Hello!! You won't believe this, but I thought of you as I did this. I thought of the messy, deeply satisfying change to the paper, the dabbling and the lovely melted wax and wondered if you might have a go at this too??🥰🥰💜💜👍
I *love* the "screwing up" part! It really helps me get past the "Oh no! I messed everything up and now I have to start over." mentality. Especially since you also " messed up" the more decorative piece of paper. Also, I think I'd use a grater to make little pieces of wax.
I need that grater.....and screwing up is now officially a "thing" on my channel....I'm afraid it just happened again in filming today....oh well, never mind 🤣🤣👍💜
Have you thought of starting a patreon? It would be so fun to have live craft-a-longs or a bonus video or whatever. I know there’d be a que to sign up. Some TH-camrs even have a happy mail tier where you get a piece of handmade ephemera, or goodies, there’s loads of options.
Ok, just watched this awesome video, plus the one by Shannon Green and I’ve got to say, I AM HOOKED! I’ve been waxing everything I can find in my craft room! But being the impatient soul I am, I just dug out some wax melts, grated them with my kitchen cheese grater and put the shavings in little plates. Using an old stash of Manila art paper (kid’s stuff) from Dollar Tree, I just sprinkled the shavings on my papers, and ironed over them with my trusty little craft iron. VOILA! Instant waxed paper and it smells heavenly - in fact my entire house smells heavenly. I did a set of envelopes, Manila tags, coffee dyed papers, fussy cut printable sheets that I hadn’t yet cut out, scrapbook papers, napkins and some magazine pages…….only took a break cause I ran out of wax melts. I see a trip to Wally World in my afternoon future………..thank you so much Josie and Shannon. You guys rocked this ole lady’s world. :). Kim, literally melting, in Texas.
Well Kim! I totally understand, I'm sure it smells fabulous, and it's calorie free!! Welcome to my channel, I hope to be able to make you this happy again!!👍🥰🥰🥰🌹
Great reminder of using wax. I buy my wax from Amazon in pellets for the same reason. I don't have candles in house to re-use. I have also bought short stubby candles at dollar store and just rubbed them on paper and then iron. I love the feel of them. Thanks!
You have such a wonderful imagination! You have such a way to bring it to life to! Thank you so much for sharing it with us/ me! Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing! God bless! Love hugs and prayers my friend! ✝️😇💜🤗🙏✝️
what a fabulous idea!! and good timing since while cleaning my window sill, I made an error of putting a scented candle on the window ledge. Since the temps here are a balmy 40C, it melted the candle. I added some other end candles on the ledge and created one new candle. And now I have yet another use for the melted candle! Thank you!
Joie, I've been missing you. I hope that you are gaining strength for your days and enjoying a bit of crafting as often as possible. I am posting a short video tomorrow (Aug. 31, '23) about waxing paper for journals. I am linking to this video of yours for more details on the process. I hope it brings you some views to this video. I just watched it again, myself, and enjoyed your tutorial. Thank you for making it. All the best to you.
Oh! There was a similar technique using beeswax and paper napkins quite a few years ago. I still have the supplies, I’ll have to dig them out and give this technique a try! I was lucky enough to find a thrifted travel iron too, which I love because it doesn’t have the steam holes in it, so the wax won’t gunk them up. Thank you for another great tutorial!
Interesting - I've seen people do encaustic with wax beads and I've wanted to try it. I only have regular wax candles, but I heard that those will work. I never thought about using scented wax candles - now I want to go get some to try with those because, like coffee dyed papers, I think a bit of a scent (as long as it's not overpowering) would actually be really nice. I'm currently practicing/learning journal making and already have been commissioned by a friend to make two - one for her and one for her granddaughter who loves to "collect" journals and scribble in them. She is a gardener and said that I could take some of her flowers. I am going to surprise her and dry some and use them in the journal I make for her! Maybe I'll use this wax technique for some ephemera in her journal or something.Either way - I'm def gonna wax something as I think it's a lovely effect. Especially with foiled paper.
Cool twist on the beeswax technique! Using scented wax is genius. I can't resist metallic mediums either! I might have a time of it screwing up my matt photo paper🙈 probably use copy paper. Ah yes, nail buffer blocks are a bit smoother than emery boards as they're for smoothing. Btw you can use a cheese grater for little bits. I did it with beeswax when I made skincare products. Lol yes, Barber jackets, we had them when I was young. I love vanilla! Acrylic might cling better for you. I like that you re melt to trap the paint inside the wax 💡. Ooh you could make weather resistant happy mail envelopes! Splendid results. Tfs and have a great day 💖💖💖
Oh my goodness you dear talented fantastic girl, u did it again….amazing results. I tried and my papers are awesome. I could not use scissors like u did, I used my grater and the results are phenomenal. Thank u again for the wonderful idea. ❤❤❤
Hello, my friend!! Love waxing paper, but I absolutely love your extra steps in making these more fun! I will definitely give this a go sometime. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas… have a wonderful day’ ❤️
Hi joie, I love this technique! I just saw Shannon Green's video and she couldn't rave enough about you turning her onto this technique! I love it as the book cover. But have a big question. You mention after you wax it, you can if you wish, run it thru your sewing machine as a border. I've heard other artists say, you can ruin your machine if the wax crumbles off and get's in the sewing machine mechanics!! you mentioned it a bit, but said you never had any problems with that. I guess if your not sure, you could sew edges first and then wax the pages? What are your thoughts? I certainly don't want to gum up my machine. But definitely want to give this technique a try! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this Joie! I have worked with encaustic wax for my paper crafts for years but never thought of using the wax from my fragrance tubs! So genius! ❤️❤️
Thank you so, so much for this Super Thanks. I am sorry that I missed this at the time, I am not very well so I missed it. I really appreciate it. Hugs, Joie 🤗💜💜💜
New subscriber here after seeing Shannon Green demo what you did. Wow!!! Using that paper as a journal cover absolutely blew me away!! Gorgeous!! And I love textures- the feel of these pages are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity!!
This is wonderful and I can't wait to have a go. I love watching your videos because you are such a talented lady. I am in the process of making a really chunky junk journal and am enjoying filling it with all the goodies you've shown me how to make. Have a fab Sunday!! Ps I bought a box of Arteza acrylic paints from amazon they arrived yesterday. And I can't wait to have a play. Keep these amazing videos coming. I love them all!!
I have used vanilla scented tea light candle that I rub on the paper and the put it in my vintage gas oven that has a pilot light. It is warm enough to melt the wax.
I may have to ask some friends for their cast off scented wax as I use a different freshener system. I adore the idea of the scented paper. I've used wax paper to seal Journaling boards and for making covers, but I think this is such a great process, that I'll be trying it soon. I'll be interested in how things adhere to the waxed areas. Tip for sewing...you can get a Teflon foot for most sewing machines. They are quite inexpensive.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this a fabby technique I've never tried, I dabbled with encaustic wax painting. You did make me chuckle when you asked the last time you cut up wax. Thank you so much for the inspiration 💗
This is the first time I have watched your Channel . And now I'm going through some of your other videos and greatly enjoying them . I was watching you melt the wax shavings and it made me think of project I did many years ago. I used a cheese grater to get my wax shredded into it's little pieces and it didn't Gunk up any scissors that I use for crafting. Just a suggestion. I'm also thinking that if you don't have an iron but you do have the wax melting air freshener systems, why not just go ahead and melt some of that wax in your air freshening system and use an old paintbrush and just paint the wax on to the areas you want. This is just a suggestion for those of us that may not have an iron we want to use with wax, but have the capacity to melt wax and paint it on the papers. I can't wait to have a go at this one.
Joie this is wonderful - your papers are absolutely beautiful - i remember doing something like this a few years ago - i used a food grater to sprinkle crayon shavings all over my papers lol - yea they were colorful but now you came up with this technique to make vintage papers and i love it - thank you so much for this inspiration - be well xx
Wonderful. I've done encaustic wax art years ago. Take oil pastels squiggles and iron over. Then think about applying candle stamp as your signature. Got me thinking
Just a thought, when applying the book pages and packing paper try ironing them after you applied the those papers gently. Just a thought. I have used the laminater when I've applied glue for the heat only.
Great project Joie. I have tried this method and I love it. Thank you so much for sharing you ideas for adding the extra touches. Thank you so much for sharing.
Such a cool technique...TYFS!! Lovely additions w/ the stamping & splatters!! 💕 Just watched a video by Shannon Green on TH-cam today(dated 7/21) where she used a product called "Daddy Van's All Natural Beeswax Furniture Polish" that transformed tissue paper from opaque white to almost clear/see through...possibly another/similar option(?) 😉
I have used vanilla scented tea light candle that I rub on the paper and the put it in my vintage gas oven that has a pilot light. It is warm enough to melt the wax. Have not tried adding the paint and splatters but an excellent idea. Love the kuretake metalics
Brilliant!! I watched Shannon‘s version this morning and then came over to watch yours and saw that I had already given it a thumbs up! I knew it sounded familiar but I never got a chance to actually watch the whole thing as life seems to stay crazy around here. Thank you so much for sharing! Beautiful as always. xx
I think those are excellent suggestions. I tried the other way round to prevent the interior also being waxy, but your suggestion is probably better 👍👍👍💜🥰 I'm sure grating will work too.
So glad to see you used wax melts! Was playing the other day with the same! Just what I had on hand!🤩 PS: it’s took way less than I expected! I had a mess at first. Love your cardboard idea👍🏼
Wow this was an amazing video. I'm anxious to see what I can do with it. I always loved projects when I was a kid using crayons that I would shave up and put between wax paper and iron it. I'm on oxygen 24/7 so I can't have any candle burning or open flames so I don't have any candle wax anymore. But I do have a block of paraffin which I will see if that will work and I might try using the crayons and get some color going. I'll let you know how it turns out
Once again, you are an absolute genius! I LOVE this idea!!
Hello!! You won't believe this, but I thought of you as I did this. I thought of the messy, deeply satisfying change to the paper, the dabbling and the lovely melted wax and wondered if you might have a go at this too??🥰🥰💜💜👍
I’m already tearing up my house looking for wax I can use! 😂😂😂
I *love* the "screwing up" part! It really helps me get past the "Oh no! I messed everything up and now I have to start over." mentality. Especially since you also " messed up" the more decorative piece of paper.
Also, I think I'd use a grater to make little pieces of wax.

It’s also fun to rub a bees wax candle over the paper and melt it with your heat tool. Such a great feel to the paper!
Ooooh that sounds lovely!!🥰🥰

💜💜💜 I just KNEW if I saved my scented wax left-overs, eventually I’d be able to use them for something!!! Thank you!
I'm afraid I can't throw things away, so I'd better come up with a use for them 🤣🤣🥰👍
I do remember doing this when we were kids.😊🤗🤗💙 Using crayons.
Great reminder of using wax. I buy my wax from Amazon in pellets for the same reason. I don't have candles in house to re-use. I have also bought short stubby candles at dollar store and just rubbed them on paper and then iron. I love the feel of them. Thanks!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this a fabby technique I've never tried, I dabbled with encaustic wax painting. You did make me chuckle when you asked the last time you cut up wax.

You're very welcome Michelle 🥰👍💜
Wonderful. I've done encaustic wax art years ago. Take oil pastels squiggles and iron over. Then think about applying candle stamp as your signature. Got me thinking

Hello Joie, what a fabulous way to make vintage paper, they came out so pretty and bet smell awesome. TFS
They definitely smell rather nice in my craft room!🤣💜
Unbelievable Joie! You come up with the most awesome techniques!
Hehe, just playing 👍🥰
Love this. I have a scented candle I can use. Tyfs 🙂
Sounds great!!🥰👍
Such an awesome idea. I have so many of those scented wax melts that I’ve never melted. Now I know what to do with them.
..and your papers will smell amazing!!💜
I have used vanilla scented tea light candle that I rub on the paper and the put it in my vintage gas oven that has a pilot light. It is warm enough to melt the wax. Have not tried adding the paint and splatters but an excellent idea. Love the kuretake metalics
I bet that smells good 🥰

Those sound fun too!!💜👍
Stunning. Very creative. Love it
Thanks so much!
Simply brilliant Joie! I need to give this a try. 😍🙂
Definitely!!
I always wondered what I could do with the little wax puddles I pull out of my warmer. Now I know. Can’t wait to try this.
Fantastic!!❣️
Love this! Thank you for another great idea. I save wax too now it has purpose.
Fantastic!!😁💜👍
Great technique!
Thanks very much!!💜
Wax, how brilliant is that…This project has been quite an inspiration.
Thanks so much!!💜👍
Can you wax after you sew? Can you grate the wax...?
I think those are excellent suggestions. I tried the other way round to prevent the interior also being waxy, but your suggestion is probably better 👍👍👍💜🥰 I'm sure grating will work too.
I love how you created the cover with the wax. This was such an awesome video. Now I have to save my wax melts and give this a try. Thank you!
Absolutely!!🥰💜👍
Very beautiful.
Greetings from germany ♥️
Greetings from me to you Lyna! Thanks for visiting!! Welcome to my channel!🌹👍
Nice idea looks so pretty.
Thanks so much
Great stuff Joie. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks very much!!💜
I have done encaustic art and used an old veggie/cheese grater to grate the wax over the paper/
That's a great suggestion....I'm pretty new to this so I'm learning 😁😁👍💜
So glad to see you used wax melts! Was playing the other day with the same! Just what I had on hand!🤩
PS: it’s took way less than I expected! I had a mess at first. Love your cardboard idea👍🏼
So true, once it melts you don't need a kit 👍🥰
Wow this was an amazing video. I'm anxious to see what I can do with it. I always loved projects when I was a kid using crayons that I would shave up and put between wax paper and iron it.
