32:00 i haven't heard anyone mention Gothic for a long time. Those were the best games, janky as they were. Massive open world with no loading screens? Complex learning and mastery system? Currency-free trade system?
All these great things, easily 15 years before it was cool.
i grew up with the gothic games here in germany, my brother showed them to me and since i first played them i made it a habit of mine to play all of them, yes even 3, on a yearly basis, easily my favorite games from my childhood

sadly they aren't really recognized outside of germany and eastern europe but everyone i know, loves them just like i do, cult classic
i respect piranha bytes for trying to bring the series back in a way through elex, gothic will alway have a huge place in my heart though, thank you for bringing that up
if anyone reads this and has never played it, but likes grim rpgs with a carefully crafted world and setting that really feels alive, please give it a shot!

you know, piranha bytes is a really small team from the "ruhrpott" (ruhr area) in germany, which has really "unique" people, lots of coal miners and their offspring, hard working, simple and modest people, who speak their mind
that contributes heavily to the originals atmosphere, i hope that studio from barcelona is able to capture it enough for people to learn to love it and i'm praying for it to be amazing, i really do.

Limited inv space is the way to implement whole base building. So you'll need some place to stash your findings, create crafting area to operate with those findings. It's the way to make some game mechanics viable and not just "existing" in game.

Honestly, even if there's a lot to be desired, it had me interested.
But the 30eu asking price, or the 25,50 with its current discount, is just too much.
In a world where Valheim and V Rising cost 20eu (and also often are on sale), asking above that for less polish just seems greedy to me.
The game gets better as more mechanics are given to player a good deal later, but that doesn't change all the glaring issues this game already has and you pointed out. Definitely feels in the early alpha stages of development. Though I'm glad I was able to try it, it should have waited before hitting early access.
The crazy thing is that it did wait before going early access. It was in a closed beta dating back to 2019, then it had a month long demo in 2022 (which was basically just open beta) during which players gave the devs a lot of feedback. Then there was a 3 month period before early access came. I honestly have no idea how there's so many issues with the game despite players continuously giving the same feedback.
21:10 They are called Weenies. Supposedly the idea came from Walt Disney himself. As he was designing his Theme Parks, he needed some way to guide guests towards different areas, without necessarily putting markers on every intersection. So by placing tall structures as the centerpieces of different areas, guests would be able to navigate the park more easily. The name had something to do with his dog... I don't remember. Ask Wikipedia or whatever.
The Disney castles are obvious Weenies, but rollercoasters or towers on top of buildings work just as well.
Please note many of the negative reviews concern the dedicated server aspect which as of now is fixed - the developers have a github page with details on how to host your own server so you are not FORCED to use G-Portal if you don't want to. People are very quick to rush into a review of an early access game and make blanket statements that are subject to IMMEDIATE change lol

Makes sense that you wouldn’t be able to see any of the keys for a controller remap without having one plugged in. Otherwise how does it now if it should show Xbox or PS keys?
part of the lore in the books of the elder scrolls games confirms the ability of certain individuals to save and load, although they refer to the phenomenon as a dragonbreak. one of the main protagonists in the lore that the player does not get to play as, was apparently capable of this. and one of the antagonists you face was apparently enlightened and was able to do weird reality warping things, after achieving a state of 'chim', but the fans of the series think he figured out that he was in a video game, and that the writers of the lore simply use the word chim.
there are other neat things, and expanded/fanfiction canon made by the original author.
also, you have to read the complete works of the argonian maid.

I would always read some of the lore whenever the game gave me a chance. Both for lore and curiosity.... In Skyrim, I actually read the first book I've encountered after escaping Helgen (One Cold Night in Hammerfell, that's the book's title) just to know why it actually gave me +1 to one-handed and legit, the book mentioned how to strike one's pressure point with a stick to make them paralyzed

corpse runs add a risk factor to the game so that you dont just pray to rng and run deep into dangerous territory for fear you might not be able to get your gear back.

I wish Splat would actually read stuff, it was painful watching him use all his apples to make fruitcakes after Hornhead specifically said, "Don't use 2 apples together, I don't like Fruitcake. One apple is enough." If he's too impatient to even read quest descriptions, that goes beyond just ignoring the lore.

In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Veruca wanted a goose that laid golden eggs. While standing on the egg-o-meter it classified her as a bad egg and sent her to the incinerator.
It was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that had the squirrels.
Even though the book was called Charlie (etc) and may have been more faithful adaptation, the Willy Wonka version is the much better of the two movies.

I've been kinda the same. Haven't been in a mood for one of these since my Valheim addiction ran it's course.
sorry for the rant, but while i love the idea of valheim and liked it for what it is, i just hate that there's not really new content after almost 2 years of development, even the roadmap was abandoned.
i have like 40 hours or so in the game, not much for a survival game and saw everything at least twice lol. and mistlands, which was teased ages ago, still has no release date.
that's why i won't buy early access titles anymore and pirate them, before i consider buying them, which hurts small teams, but i just don't trust them anymore. they sold millions of copies, but it seems like the devs aren't using the money for the development, as it's supposed to be with early access games, but rather for their own.
if mistlands doesn't at least triple the content they have now, they will lose their playerbase, people, me included, are pissed.

I really want to like this game, and might still try it, but for me two things you said struck hard: the combat being not very smooth and fun, which is a problem cause the player seems expected to spend a lot of time in combat. Also a shame since I usually really like souls-like and action-rpg combat, but it does look really clunky... second thing is the monotony of the map and things like the no wildlife thing. Its so important for immersion, that you'll just be able to stop on your way to some destination and look at animals grazing or birds flying or whatever. There were fish though, technically :)
seems like a mix of fable/alumar(edit, yeah genshin as well) and v/valheim.
has some promise but that carrying capacity and general low enemy density is working against it so far.

oh god please dont put this idea in developer's heads that sliders in the lobby removes the responsibility for balance. especially when starting the first game, especially when solo I think almost everyone will not want to touch the sliders and so the default settings become the developer intended settings. that's how i see it.
since this is my second comment on this channel and its kinda negative again I wanna say thanks for all the videos every day. I do realise it is quite the effort and we dont see the behind the scenes stuff. but there are several games I found through you and wishlisted or just bought and I'm very happy you're making content. thanks man! you're doing the lord's RNGesus work.
Thanks for the review. The graphics look very pretty and there's a lot to explore, but for me time trials and jumping puzzles are a deal-breaker. I'm a klutz and I would get stuck there forever.

I wanna get spawned into that world just to be that super-BUFF!, damn!, Splatty called it! No-way you're that buff without "majical" help, damn! In these games I always find the building system is just huge, if things don't snap well it's hugely important. I agree there need to be neautral creatures just wandering around to make a world feel "alive". Hopefully issues will be addressed in a timely manner.

Definitely getting single player Genshin vibes from this. And I don't dislike that. I'm probably not sold on jumping in right away, but it seems interesting enough to keep an eye on it.

So they changed a cooking process. In previous open test, it was instantaneous.
For an alpha it's looking good, now the hard part is to see how it handles the trial of time. Emptyness and clunkyness will have to be ironed out and I'm hoping they will be, my interest is definitely piqued.

I agree with you 50/50 on the encumbrance part...most games are fine but in games like Skyrim and Outward weight is *way* *way* too overdone

Proper fruit cake is great, the cheaper ones aren't great and homemade tend to be Really dry unless they were soaked in alcohol (Rum preferred for me).

At first I thought you were overly critic for an early access game, but then I took a look at the steam page and it seems the current stage of the game is mostly or 100% complete regarding gameplay, and we should expect mostly just additional content from now towards 1.0, like more recipes, more biomes, more items and so on. So I think your criticism was spot on. Specially regarding combat, I can feel the clunkiness through the video, and it seems there's going to be a LOT of combat in the game. No denying the game looks awesome though.

I agree about the carrying weight. Unless the game also has an inventory management system i assume you just have a magic bag that fits that 4000 ore you just collected. So there is no point for weight and getting overburdened.

You know Now that I think about it I think it's okay that it doesn't have a lock on, it'll kind of add to the challenge. Because you know in real life you're not going to have a lock on so sometimes your attack might miss. Get what I mean?

I'm weirdly the opposite when it comes too RPG's. I NEED to read the lore and all the text and talk to all hte NPC's to get engrossed in the game because if I'm not engrossed in the RPG I'm not playing more than 4 hours lol.
For what it's worth, G-Portal is a pretty good host. If it's just you and a few friends I don't understand what the issue is.
I'm glad for the review and the summary that it's best to wait, but I'm a bit disappointed with your advice to people on the fence about this is to play Breath of the Wild instead.
Frozen Flame is a PC game. Breath of the Wild is Nintendo Switch & Wii. While certainly some people will own both, many people won't. Comparing a PC game to a console game is fine in the review, but suggesting it as an alternative a bit weird. It's easier to spend $25 on an EA title than $300 on a 5-year-old console and game.

lol I completely forgot about this as I tend to do with most demos so thanks for reminding me this existed, I love puzzles and I love rpgs so I was really excited when I first heard about it XD I played the demo of this awhile ago and I remember really enjoying it and glad to see they added things since then, and I hope they fix the issues which they seem to be doing and I can't wait for more development updates from them. This games seems pretty ambitious. Lots of work, but with all that work, how is it hoping to compete with say.. Immortals: Phoenix Rising or BOTW? I guess it could be the extensive building mechanics.
It clearly doesn't have the dynamic and interesting combat of these two games though, it looks much more rigid and simple (as in straightforward, not "easy"), like a basic Souls game formula.
Graphics gave me a windbound vibe, and i do like that graphics style....great review of a sweet game!..thanks for sharing and keep it up mr splatt!

been almost 2 years and they are at version 0.2, mistlands, if it's not their 1.0 update, is one of idk 10 (?) updates on their roadmap and it still has no release date.

BOTW with some building mechanics?? Definitely could be interesting. Hopefully they take their time and I can def see the combat needing some sprucing up but also this vid doesn't seem to get deep enough to unlock many mechanics so idk
