She’s smiling and laughing a lot-that’s Indonesian. And the best part is that she seems to have found peace in Singapore and with herself. I see many Indonesians changing their nationality and not happy with their life. Every time they have a chance, they will compare and b*tch about Indonesia. I am very happy for this lady. LOL. It depends. Many Indonesians emmigrated and never look back. Indonesia has too many problems, one of them: ageism in finding job, no wonder Indonesia's unemployment is no.2 in ASEAN. Singapore is not the best destination to emmigrate, it is just a city state with overcrowded problem.

I worked in construction on Batam in the 90's. At that time I saw so many Singaporean worked in Batam so I thought why couldn't Indonesian work in Singapore, in Construction. After hundreds applications sent by fax (no email that time), I got some calls for interviews and eventually got a job. From that time to 2005, I worked in and out of Singapore. During my time there, so many people baffled how come Indonesia (Batam) is so near but no Construction people from Indonesia in Singapore. For them, I was the first Indonesian Site Engineer they noticed
I think language barrier (maybe) one of the major reason? at least the insecurities associated with having to deal with foreign language at daily basis might hinder some people not used to speak other than their mother tongue. But that's just my opinion though.
@victorquintoro245 There were plenty of Indonesian construction workers in Singapore in the '90's. They were mainly from Java and some stayed in Kampung Kapor district, I stayed with some of them in a Haji's house. I worked with them to build a milk factory in Jurong.
@@dompretcloud2when was that? Because when I started working there in 1994, there were none Indonesian construction workers, let alone in the Engineer level. I believe lots of Indonesian were working there in office work, but not on Construction Sites. I knew that Indonesian workers were banned in Singapore because they were rioting or fighting between themselves.

As an indonesian who has been spending the 2/3 of my life in Krasnodar, Russia.I can tell you that this lady is telling amazing stories that somehow resonate well with me as well. The reason why indonesians didn't travel much before it was because our country is super huge and many indonesians at that time thought that if you have Money better see the outside world rather than seeing what we have. However, now due to Instagram era many young indonesians are started to explore our own backyard.

It doesn’t seem there’s work life balance in Sg. Sg in hyper capitalist country where you work until you fall over. I have couple friends who are Singaporean and don’t want to live there especially bringing kids there. At the end of the day, it depends on what is your priority in life.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but most people who change their nationality from Indonesian to Singaporean are of Chinese descent, They came from China and then moved to Indonesia, where they settled and had children. As their economic situation improved, some of them moved to Singapore, Australia, or other countries, but many chose to remain in Indonesia. Those who change their citizenship are usually people who are accustomed to traveling abroad because they have the financial means to do so. There are rumors that some also moved to Singapore from Indonesia to escape corruption cases they were involved in back home. Unlike the indigenous people of Indonesia, very few of them are willing to change their citizenship. This is partly because most of them belong to the middle class and rarely travel abroad, but also because they deeply love their homeland, where they were born and raised.
yeah you right most indonesia i know a local ethnic never give up their citizen even they work abroad in years . . . why because since little they taught love their motherland or maybe food or maybe culture . . . you know even i move to new province but i still miss my own province culture every day . . . (yep i comeback every month)
Many of them come to SG because ethnic clash at 1998 where the political and economic is not stable. Its not because they are richer, its just safer at that time and few years after. The trauma esp in jakarta area is not easy to erase. Many of the chinese decendant is not like second generation, so they actually have roots, culture, life in indonesia. Their big family is in indonesia. Therefore, while they go to sg, it isnt easy. Like many other indonesian.
@@khatascloset5840also there are places in Indonesia that are catching up to Singapore in terms of quality services and facilities such as in Jakarta, Tangerang, and Surabaya. Steady and strong economic growth utilizable by many Indonesians including those of Chinese descent. Unless there happen sudden negative economic and social shocks like the one happening back in 1998 there is no urgency to flee and abandon Indonesian citizenship.

Not to mention, the national service will delay your child's educational age. Sure, they are pro and kontra but living in SG is not perfectly nice as people told. 7:18 she looks uncomfortable here, but her sentiments are shared with the rest of the country. Of course racism is a thing in Indonesia just like everywhere else, but it’s not embedded in the institutions like in Malaysia and Singapore where the “races” are herded but their governments to live their lives separate from each other. Racism in Indonesia naturally occurs, while in our neighboring countries they used the old British strategy to segregate the communities to avoid tensions. Which one is better, which one is worse? It’s really up to you. But just like what she said, we would identify first as Indonesian above all. Singaporeans and Malaysian would always identify themselves as Chinese Malaysians, Malay Singaporeans, etc when introducing themselves to foreigners but Indonesians would just say that they’re Indonesians, even those who’ve changed their nationality like the lady in this video.
There's some truth to this but saying things like 'naturally occurs', 'not embedded', or recycling (or not) the colonial master strategies, missing a whole lot of history and nuances. There are many instances where the military (ex: Ambon) or the regime (Mesuji) or fractions of both (kerusuhan 98) ignited this so-called 'naturally occurs' racism to deadly gruesome violence. Worse, they let it sink to our subconscious without ever dealing with it. Not embedded? By law, Tionghoa could never owns a land in DIY.

I have Chindo friends (Chinese Indonesians) in medan and jakarta. Was in medan also known as the "Gotham City" for a wedding and the pace there was slow moving but the traffic there was scary especially during peak hours. At the zebra crossing the cars and motorbikes will not stop for you to cross unless you raised your hands like a stop sign to indicate that you are crossing only a few will stop automatic for you to cross. Indonesians are friendly, helpful and smiling people and Indonesian food is super delicious too. I love this drink called "bedak" which is equivalent to our Sarsi here. If they are rich they are super rich if they are poor they are super poor you can easily spot them begging along the road dividers ranging from adults to children. The cousin of my friend insured our safety that he had to locked the car doors. I seen this when i was in medan. The tour guide also shared with us that families of children who stay in the outskirts usually will wake up early to start their journey on foot to walk to school miles and miles to and fro. So one should travel overseas to appreciate our home country better.
The beggar you see along the road is definitely not poor, at least by Indonesian standard. They just pretend to be poor or sick to fool people. Most of them comparable to middle income people with decent house and car.
@@rian4104 thanks for the clarification. Glad you reply. Its not easy to tell especially coming from me as a tourist. Now i understand why the motorist at the traffic light junction do not give money probably 1 or 2 will give. Even my friend's cousin did not give either. I learnt something. Thanks again!
As a Singaporean, even i refused to call us friendly. My years of experience travelling to Indonesia. I wont even said generally Indonesians are friendly and helpful. The last straw came before covid global lockdown. Flew over to Semarang for a friend's wedding. To my horror while i was there, my friend told me. My passport particular was shared in a FB community page there, warning everyone in there to keep a look out for me, for i might be a carrier of the covid virus. Long story short, my friend and his village head requested that i keep out of the issue and let them settled it. Generally people are not nice and friendly everywhere. My friend is nicer, because he is my lifelong friend and the rest whom i had crossed path with Naaahhh... simply rubbish! 🤪🤪

The rich Indonesians swear by Singapore Airlines. On the flight , quite often the passengers in first and business class know each other. The Ibu Ibu in their big perfectly coiffed hair and the bapak in batik shirts. Once, long ago on a flight from Singapore to London, a family occupied the entire first class. Even the infant had a seat to himself in first class. What was astonishing was that the nanny and helpers were seated in business class! I will not forget the size of the diamond on the Ibu’s finger! 😂😂😂.
Yea the wealth inequality in Indonesia is crazy, I went to school with some people who are at this level, it's just insane to see. Their homes are literal mansions with elevators and swimming pools, one person's backyard has a dock attach to it with a small boat that's theirs. Meanwhile I'm eating noodles trying to survive another month of uni in Singapore.
Yeah poor majority Indonesian people. Still lots of poor people and big gap between poor and rich and super rich. The rich become richer and obsess with money. The poor become poorer. I don’t envy these people flexing their wealth. That’s why I love living in other country where majority people can have opportunities to live better.
Racism in Singapore is exist and systematic. Race-thinking in Singapore was influenced from British colonialist who introduced the polygenism in the British colonies.
She's such a great ambassador and keeping her positive vibes. As an Indonesian who has been living away from home for a long time, I can definitely relate to some of the 'challenges' when you just started learning about a new culture.
I was going Umrah to Saudi, a place that i love in there is Madinah and The Prophet Rawdah, others is how thankfully i'am as Indonesian, very different nature. Btw nice talk both of you, rich information, singapore is a good place for work, i understand the decision and good luck ☕
If your ancestors are not native Indonesians, if your ancestors were immigrants in Indonesia for trading long decade ago, if you do not feel a connection with the original Indonesian culture, if you feel you are more connected to the global culture, if you prioritize personal success over contributing to the country, if you feel Indonesia is more suitable as a country for tourist visits, if you have an interest in seeking world wealth, your decision to move is absolutely right. Visit Indonesia once in a while as a tourist.
Ya i guess live in indonesia is better than other countries, while you can live in landed house, you can build your own house and it is not expensive, to do what ever you want, you can travel to any island, make friends, very livable social life

Chindos and Indonesians get along well, i've never heard anything about racism towards each other but what i've noticed is, I have alot of chindo friends that has racist parents (maybe because of what happened in 1998), they don't allow their kids to be in a relationship with Indonesians or not even that, i'm not allowed to go to my friend's house because their parents don't want their kids to be seen hanging out with Indonesians. But the younger generation typically doesn't care about race, maybe we'll joke about each other but nothing racist
Likewise, I find a lot of Indonesians parents (non chindos) are very racist towards chindos. I have one of my friends who got a comment from their parents "iya kamu pacaran doang gapapa tapi kalau menikah mama ga akan restuin" Which is... wow.. thats a not so nice statement.

@@rf7182 That is true also. What bothers me is the word 'should' that he used. Should in the English language is almost like must do this or ought to do this. As if the other has no choice and would be 'left out' or even stupid if the other person refuses. If he would had used the word 'can' or 'could' it would had made a big difference. Then the option is with the other person, then there would be not so much force put onto the other. It would be more like a suggestion, an idea. And then there is the social phylosophical aspect. In this time and age almost everyone and their dog is on social media vlogging their lives way or selling their products. We really don't need more influencers. It is as if this has become the only way to communicate and a substitute for idol worshipping. People have gone mad and they don't realize it. As if life won't exist anymore without all these influencers. It is a very selfish thing to say that others should open a TH-cam channel. The influencer will then feed their emptines, their constant hunger. Plus people underestimate the consequences it has for a person to give up their privacy and go online all the way. Many of them suffer from mental ilnesses. We are living in the age of narcissism.

Systematic racism in Singapore, indeed exist. The basis of a racialised mode of ethnic governance is the Chinese-Malay-Indian-Other (CMIO) model, which is based on the notion that separate management of racial groups ensures optimal functioning of society. The effects of these racialisation policies have permeated almost every aspect of life in the city state, creating key social divisions among Singaporeans. That's why She got better offer job, payment, accomodation, allowance, etc as Chinese descent compared to the other races. She knew, that she always be welcome and accepted in Indonesia.

Deng Xiaoping said, 'Singapore was built from the descendants of illiterate, landless peasants from Fujian and Guangdong. But then they denied their origin/ancestors'.
Nonsense assessment. In many ways, Malaysians and Singaporeans Chinese are more Chinese than China Chinese. Example practising the religion itself "Shenism" or Taoism is more preserved and widely practise here than in China. There is hardly any one practising their ancestors' religion in China.
Own a beautiful spacious piece of tanah air land is the true wealth if not luxury that not all nationalities can afford or has thr opportunity. It is definitely much worth it than visa hassles when traveling.
In Indonesia there is not much racism anymore actually since long ago, the main racism was from the government and long ago instigated by the Dutch for divide and rule. If you go to chinese temples in smaller towns specially in East Java, you will often see Muslims (many with tudung) following the chinese puppetry and they know the story even better than us Chinese. Many Muslims also work at temples explaining the chinese how to pray and the customs.....best example of Tolerance! Indonesians are very tolerant! There are exceptions of course, but try to look at the majority, a lot of violence in the near past was instigated by certain groups in society, not by the common people themselves

Max, out of all your interviews of foreigners who settled in Singapore, this lady is the most technical one. She settled here for her convenience, and not for the love of the place. My takeaway is purely based on the video, of course, since i don't know her. "Singapore is nice, in a way, to live in." Such enthusiasm after 20 years and building a home and family here. "Once the plane lands, it's like, I'm very familiar with this, this is home." I wouldn't be surprised if her family packs up and leaves before her boys needs to serve NS. As a Singaporean, i feel "used". Let's hope her economic output contributes to Singapore more than her emotional attitude.
To lose your Indonesian passport can hurt a lot. It is not just a piece of paper. It has big consequences. Yes, from etnicity and origin she is Indonesian and her father said those words meaning that she will always be part of the family. Once the passport is gone there is no turning back, at least not in an easy way.

@@kilanspeaks no, we would intro ourselves as malaysian to foreigners. We are not so much in following the brit style anymore. Racism is still strong but relationship were better compared to the past. In the past, ppl just avoid contacting diff race unless u live in the same village.

Just because the majority has a religion, doesn't mean that racism is caused by religion. The same goes for everything else.
South Korea, which is predominantly atheist, still has high racism, especially towards Southeast Asia and South Asia.
Racism in Indonesia, at least, is caused by politics. Even the person who restored the rights of Chinese people in Indonesia was a very religious Muslim (the 4th President). And the one who caused racism was the least religious president (Soeharto, the 2nd President)

Yea the wealth inequality in Indonesia is crazy, I went to school with some people who are at this level, it's just insane to see.

@NishanthSalahudeen start a channel just because someone has great communication skill is a poor reason
