I looked Dr. Mcglory up. I could not find a single other non-literature source that broadcasts his work. I’m a medical resident and longtime fan and find you fulfill such a unique role in the longevity space. Under-recognized researchers like Dr. McGlory desperately need platforms to discuss their fascinating findings. This video is exactly the content I’m looking for to advance my knowledge of longevity literature topics.

Mega dosing of fish oil of 40 to 60 grams a day was giving by Charles Poliquin strength and conditioning coach to Olympic and professional athletes. He said his athletes increased their reaction time on this dose and improved their recovery time. He said this amount has to be reduced after 6 months to 10 to 3 grams. He said looking up omega 3s on pubmed has a positive outcome for almost every condition. I have experimented with high dose liquid fish oil before and I felt just overall sense higher well being and I had a slight lsd effect for a couple of days of everything looking more brighter, colorful, and detailed. I'm going to try to do this for a month again of 16 ounces a week for a month.

Dr. As an N=1 , I can attest to the increase in strength of resistance training. 66 YT old male, 6ft. 204lbs, 17 % body fat. Now my strength is not what it was in my early 20’s and 20lbs lighter, but I’m quite sure that is do to my test levels being lower and the wear and tear of training all these years. Eat as clean as possible with as little processed food, mostly chicken rice, eggs, protein supplements as well as om-3, k2/d3, magnesium, creatine contains beta Ali mine and glutamate. Initiated om-3 a few weeks ago and have gained 4lbs. Will be doing another body fat test at end of month to check my numbers. My ab check shows no increase in abdominal fat. I do appear fuller in my muscle bellies though. Thanks for sharing info. AMA will be last to adopt such information because of the lack of financial incentives for them. I distinctly recall the late Canadian strength coach, Charles Poliquin, advocating omega 3 intake with the claims that omega 3's, among other things, enhanced fat loss and increased protein synthesis. The articles he wrote would have to be somewhere near a decade ago, i would think.
I recall a suggested loading phase of 15 g per day, followed by a maintenance intake of 5 g a day. I actually followed the above protocol . No idea if it enhanced protein synthesis, but it certainly got rid of joint pain that was significant when I began resistance training after 2 decades of doing no exercise.

Excellent: detailed but accessible, full of confidence-boosting comments ‘I don’t know’, ‘we don’t have information on that’ and with zero grifting (not selling Omega-3). All this signs true expertise. The discussion (at around 1:28 in the podcast) of possible interference or possible synergy between aerobic and resistance exercise was gripping and unexpected. The idea that resistance and aerobic training somehow work against each other is increasingly out there in gym-bro land but is seldom put in such good perspective.

Great interview as always! Ive got a question though. What about arachidonic acid. I somewhere read that with a high dose Omega 3 supplementation your arachidonic acid levels will drop low. I wonder if this also has clinical relevance for example for vegans who naturally might have a very low arachidonic acid supply. Also interesting that there is talk about how arachidonic acid supplementation might stimulate muscle protein synthesis (I'm a layman, no guarantee anything about what i just said is true). Maybe you can shed some light on that topic in the future. Thank you!

I’ve been able to maintain my strength but I have lost weight and muscle mass the last few years. After watching this video, I will increase my high quality omega 3 supplementation. I have heard from different plausible sources that constant activation of mtor can actually cause an increase in sarcopenia. I would love to hear your thoughts on doing an on and off mtor activation protocol and the best way to do that, if you think it would be beneficial.

This has been such an interesting talk. I have just been through observing and managing a two stage deterioration of muscle in my 90 year old mother. Her exercise history was 45 years of yoga (advanced) and treadmill and some light weight lifting up until 82. Around 88.5 y.o. my mother went into a sharp physical decline with rapid sarcopenia where I needed to take care of her virtually full time (which changed my own health since I wasn't able to eat or exercise as I normally did). Her weight went down to as low as 44 kg which later decreased to 41.7. At 89 she had two falls 3 months apart. The first fall she wiped off the skin on her left arm from her upper arm to her upper hand. She had plastic surgery with her own skin stuck back on. I had carefully stuck the skin back in place to bandage her for transport to hospitatal. Once she had that procedure she was transferred to a rehab hospital where she did physio (biking) and light weights. This was for 6 weeks, she ate well and had increased cardiovascular health. On returning home she was home 2 days and had another fall because she failed to walk across her bedroom with a walking stick which would have prevented the accident (as with the first fall). This time she injured her left arm again in the same way but only affecting her lower arm. She also hit her head on furniture. Back to hospital (fortunately one of Sydney's top hospitals), same plastic surgery, return to rehab but a different rehab hospital with much better exercise. She again ate well and increased her weright to 44.3. She was able to walk using a walker but the gerontologist said she needed 24/7 care in a nursing home. She does some exercise but not as intensely as the second rehab hospital where she gained weight. I have no idea how much of her weight gain was muscle. She stopped taking fish oil which she'd taken previously when she had her falls. She is back to deteriorating slowly in the nursing home and needs to have someone with her to do anything as she walks with her walker. The rapid deterioration in her late 80s was very odd to me. She has never done a lot of resistance training, just cardioi and stretching/balance/small weights type exercise during the past 3 years. She's about to turn 91. The rapid muscle loss has been very mysterious to me. My own "fun" experience included muscle loss too and a slipped disc from a lot of heavy lifting of over 40 kg
I've been taking omega 3 for 2 years now so I guess I need to introduce it to my mother!

You might want to look into Creatine Monohydrate, and Betaine Anhydrous (Trimethylglycine TMG), for the muscle, and Hyaluronic acid and Collagen peptides for skin. And Taurine looks good too for senors.
And given the suddenness, there may be a nutrient deficiency. Good to test that directly from the blood. Her gut may not be taking up something. And it could be the other direction too. Too much Vitamin B6, Niacinamide, Iron, or Vitamin A can damage health. Also, look at any medications she might be taking, and whether any of those can cause nutrient shortfalls.
Also, if she was doing good before, she may have had a diet that served her better than what she is eating now. I think it is important to avoid cooking at high temperature or heavily blending, because that makes Advanced Glycation End-products. Those have to be cleared by the kidneys, and kidney function often declines in advanced years. Safer to have more soups, stews, boiled Italian stuff, fresh salads, steamed or boiled vegetables and fresh fruit. And if she was going outside, say, to garden or something and now isn't, she could be low in vitamin D.
Rotting teeth are also very bad for health.

Other life benefits would be great! Now my mother is In a nursing home I'm not in a position to "interfere" in dietary stuff or supplements. We are talking about a woman who weighs 44kg on a good day with not a skerric of body fat anywhere. But I take algal omega and have been for a while. I know it's not the case for many here but I'm also WFPB, which my mother wasn't. To be honest, I want to find some fun in life among all this research and rather rule-bound approach many here seem to follow. A lot of it sounds pretty earnest.
I'm so glad your mother had a better time once she was back with family. This is not the first time I've heard of such a good outcome after people removed their parents from nursing homes during covid. One friend of mine had a mother-in-law who resumed playing the piano when she returned home, after not playing for 20 years, it was Bach, Bartok and Beethoven every day with her super arthritic hands. That just seems wonderful to me.

@@L.J.01 Not true, in a half truth of way. Ironically, there is a growing base of data indicating that MTOR is chronically activated in sarcopenic muscles (In fact, you can actually make muscle sarcopenic by activating MTOR nonstop leading to broken mitochondria! You don't even have to ruin your vascular system!) so throwing more protein at what amounts to a anabolically resistant black hole is not the solution. If anything, you would want to do a prolonged fast and temporality sacrifice some muscle. then refeed and sprint or weight lift on the following days with re-sensitized muscle and of course fix your arterial system. -Meat based KD sprinter
I've seen people still grow even with 1.2-1.5g/kg of protein indicating that if sufficiently efficient, there will still be enough leftover for anabolism.

I’m 62, a lifelong exercise enthusiast, & I’ve just had surgery to repair my supraspinatus tendon in my rotator cuff using a graft. The surgeon doesn’t want me to overload on omega-3’s, at least initially. I imagine reluctance comes with the understanding that omega-3’s reduce inflammation and thin blood. Blood thinning guards against clotting which can confound early wound repair and inflammation reduction blunts pain, but clearly there are proper balances to maintain. Can anyone help me to better understand the benefit/detriment balance in using up to 5 grams of omega-3’s daily to stave off inevitable disuse atrophy?

In my opinion, krill oil is not a ‘better’ option, but rather, a complimentary partner to highly concentrated fish oil supplement. I take 3 concentrated fish oil a day to get my 3g or so total EPA plus DHA. Then I will take 2 krill oil pills a day to add approximately 0.36g of omega 3. I get my total omega 3 intake between 3-3.5g, but also get some benefit of Astaxanthin and phospholipids in Krill oil without swallowing too many krill oil pills, and break the bank in the process (krill oil is a very expensive form of omega 3 oil source).

Chris mentioned that the omegas will assist with preventing loss of muscle mass dependent on simultaneous exercise, but Dr Anura Singh said that Urolithin A behaves like exercise and is additive to those effects. So I guess a point to ponder is how effects of high dose omegas will interact with Urolithin A.

flaxseed and walnuts are not food sources for DHA and EPA. They do provide ALA, but the conversion of ALA to EPA or DHA within our human bodies are very low.
Algae oil do provide DHA and EPA (that’s how marine animal get their omega 3 when they eat algae). However, it’s cost prohibitive to most people to get the 3 or even 5g net of combined EPA and DHA via algae oil by swallowing a very high number of algae oil pills.

At around 1:18:00 he mentions someone is doing work studying taking, for instance, 5gr per day for 5 days and then a maintanance dose. Can anyone refer me to that work? or even understands the name he mentions? It's crucial info for me since where I live it is unaffordable to take 5gr per day, it's not prescribed and I need it desperately as treatment.

How do you resolve what I perceive as a contradiction with using Omega-3 to diffuse the impact of muscle disuse atrophy when it is also understood that NSAID’s blunt muscle hypertrophy, unless Omega-3’s do much more for this problem than lowering inflammation?

Is omega 3 consumption cumulative or do you have to take it daily...so for instance, I eat 5 to 6 cans of sardines in one day...giving me 13 or more grams of omega 3...is that 2 and a half days worth (at 5g per day) or do I need my 5g again the next day?

    • @FoundMyFitness

It's probably more optimal, all things being equal, to distribute that intake a little bit more evenly. There are acute effects that happen that are on the timescale of hours rather than days.

This is sort of a new tier of effects that Chris has demonstrated at high doses of 5 grams per day. He wants to determine the optimal dose to achieve them, but it's not clear yet if it's strictly necessary to have the dosage that high. It might also be the case that aspects of these anti-catabolic (and anabolic) effects may be present at lower doses.
That being said, for a typical person, it may be safer and generally more conservative to optimize based on the omega-3 index. This is a bit more oriented towards cardiovascular health.
For most people, around 2 to 2.5 grams of omega-3 per day of combined EPA and DHA would get them in a very healthy range on this basis.
You can learn more about that in this interview:

Good luck getting all your omega 3 by krill oil. I buy a ‘ultra concentrate’ name brand krill oil, and it would take 28 such pills to get to 5g of total omega 3! Even if you don’t mind the high cost of krill oil, I’d say swallowing 28 pills a day of only a single kind of supplement is a bit excessive 😮

This should be a personal message vs a post, but I as I was watching this, I thought, wow, Dr. Patrick looks her age today (in this clip). I wonder why… Then I just saw another video recorded 8 years ago, and I realized Dr. Patrick looks almost exactly same now as she did 8 years ago. As a matter of fact, she looks better now than 8 years ago. So while she looks amazing for her age usually, I’m now thinking it has more to do with lighting on this video. :D Goes to show what she’s passionate about works.

@@FoundMyFitnessDo you agree with his belief that plant based keto is just as effective, if not more, as animal fat and protein based keto?
Also, what do you think of the strength or validity of his own trials that he uses to back up his plant based philosophy? No control group, not blinded, and a published paper I read reviewing them said he may have cherry picked the participants. His clinic and the manufacturer of his own supplements funded his last study. He had to pay to get these studies published in notorious pay-to-play publications.
I researched him when I was considering going to one of his clinics for early cognitive decline and saw the initial consult fees ($1800 or more plus his monthly vitamin packs). What astonishes me is respected researchers and doctors like yourself and Dr. Hyman promote his sketchy work.

I see all the comments about Andy being too aggressive or whatever and I guess I can see that he might be too high energy for some, but the guy walking by and ignoring an extended hand from another man, then instead of saying hello of something, he bitches about the music. Well, I’m not going to say he is wrong, but I will say that is the type of guy I consider a dick. So maybe they were both wrong, but don’t give the other guy a pass. Before you say it, no, the guy doesn’t have to shake his hand. True, but it still makes him a dick for pretending to ignore it. Just for all the betas out there that don’t get it.
