    My girlfriend’s grandma (age 96) & great aunt (99) grew up in Newfoundland and fish was the primary souce of protein throughout their lives. Her grandma passed last year but her great aunt still lives alone and is very independent. I’m amazed that she has all her mental faculties and can hold conversations recalling stories of her younger years.

      fish is a brainfood omega 3 comes from it. people with low omega 3 and vit d get diagnosed with mentall illness alot

      I'm from newfoundland and there is a company from here that makes an omega 3 supplement from seal. I take them regularly and would love to know where it stands on the "marine" Omega scale as Rhonda discusses.

    In 2008 I started getting some hip pain in my left hip. It soon began in my right hip. I asked my GP about it and he said "let me know when it gets bad enough and we will schedule your hip replacement surgery." The pain gradually got worse til in 2013 it was bad enough that I quit a hike and came home early. I figured it would get debilitating so I wanted to have one more good volcano season first. So I started taking new supplements that would help my strength and stamina. In early 2014 I noticed that my hip pain was gone. I had a great season hiking 260 miles, 75,000 feet & some great volcanos. After volcano season I stopped all my new supplements. My hip pain came back. I started resuming them one at a time to see which cured my hip pain. It was EPA/DHA. I took EPA/DHA for a year. No hip pain. I stopped EPA/DHA. The pain came back. I resumed EPA/DHA. It is now 2024. I am 74 years old and still have no hip pain. I am taking pills that have 500mg of EPA and 250mg of DHA, 4 per day. I have tried several brands. They all work.

      The future will only provide information to help you if the government values you as a productive person. We will all be judged. The algorithms are already doing this. Information like this will not occur for many as our food sources become more scarce. I already know what it's like having all the algorithms go against you. They make it hard for you to learn about any knowledge to help yourself. They are worried about overpopulation.

    Thank you for going on that tangent about mercury in fish. My mom loves fish and I know it’s a great source of omega-3, but I would sometimes worry about how pollutants would affect her health. I’m glad to know that the omega-3’s counteract at least mercury.
    It wasn’t totally clear if you were also saying that it counteracts other pollutants commonly fish.
    I’m eager to find out more about this .

    Fish oil lowered my triglycerides 30 points in two months. Nordic Naturals has a lemon flavor liquid no big pills and very pure.

      ​@chazbo3071fun 1000mg EPA/DHA daily has helped lower my Triglycerides from 1.53 to 0.67 (now down from 2.53 a year ago). Note: 2.53 down to 1.53 was from Statins (then I plateaud)
      The wild fish oils took it down even further. Using Kirkland (Costco) Omega's (figure I'd start with an easier brand of fish oil to start with).

      I take the same. For me it’s a very noticeable yet subtle improvement in cognition, mental recall of all sorts and I swear it keeps my appetite in check. I know more is going on as well but those are the obv benefits for me. I also eat canned sardines and salmon everyday on top of it just cause I love them and it’s the perfect meal for lifting weights. I feel cleaner and lighter. If that makes any sense. YMMV

    super interesting!
    when I was younger my stepdad was a commercial fisherman so we ate fish all of the time, and the best quality too. We ate fish majority of nights including clams, crabs and so on, in retrospect when I think about those times I remember how I was at the top of my class, never dealt with depression/anxiety (even though life wasn’t so easy) & I also had great blood work. I was 10-16 at this time. Now I’m 21, eat seafood maybe once a month or less and feel like I notice a change and it’s much harder for me to do well in school, stay focused, bloodwork is wacky, interesting to say the least. Not sure if there’s a connection but gonna make sure I get my fish oil in at least

      @@hikerJohn Pacific Northwest, we ate salmon, tuna, crab, shrimp, cod, trout, and so on. Mostly tuna crab and salmon since every year those were the fishing seasons

    I would be very curious to see a podcast episode specifically on inflammation in the body.
    I say this because, while I am aware of the literature linking chronic inflammation with reduced lifespan, inflammation also plays a role in processes like muscle hypertrophy, which is shown to positively correlate to lifespan.
    Is it the chronic nature of inflammation that makes it reduce lifespan? And if so, would it be reasonable to assume that chronic resistance training without enough recovery would actually be detrimental to lifespan via inflammation effects?
    I'd love to hear a more in-depth discussion on this.

    How would “icosapent ethy” interact with the genetic mutations that doesn’t take advantage of the omegas?

      Flax seed is very poorly absorbed no matter what. Most people only take in less than 1%. Waste of money.

    I try to include seafood in my diet but I live in a landlocked state so it’s not easy. I do supplement with cod liver oil and the neurological benefits I’ve experienced are huge!

    So, am I correct to believe.. if a woman is post- menopausal- and has low to No estrogen.. it is a good idea to supplement a plant based diet with an Omega 3 supplement? Or choose to eat small fatty fish 3x week? Any concerns about link of these Omega 3 supplements to cancer metastasis? (As I heard about a prostate study that linked this)

    Surprisingly, many a times labs inducate that those of us who have been megadosing on omega3s in isolation have develiped low levels of omega6 which is also a problem !
    Few facts :
    1. Your body needs an optimal Balance between omega 3 and omega 6, and NOT very low omega 6.
    2. Your body needs Full spectrum omegas and not just omega 3. Full spectrum omega complex will have omegas 3-5-6-7-9-11 !

    Excellent info from Dr. Rhonda Patrick. A bit leery on the Omega-3 offsetting mercury poisoning though.
    Personally, I'm a ovo-pescatarian that is mainly plant based. I eat fish 2-3 times per week and eggs when I go out for breakfast. Not a big fan of supplements, though I do take a D3 and on occasion magnesium and B multivitamin. Having said that, it seems that a lot of people should consume an Omega-3 if deficient (as pointed out).

      If you take D3, you should consider pairing it with K2. Make sure your B complex doesn't contain folic acid. Opt for folate instead. 😉

      @@rossstevens6165 I wouldn't suggest that. I eat them a couple of times a week and minimize omega-6 intake the rest of the week. If you're worried about mercury, spend some time in the sauna and consider supplementing chlorella. 💚

    I support your inference that omega-3 acids are very important. However, there is a need for a clearer presentation of what we know so far. Not all formulations
    of omega-3 have shown to be equally effective. Please look at the JELIS trial in Japan and REDUCE-IT trials that focused on icosapent ethyl (EPA); also how at higher concentrations of EPA (> 2g/day) there is a risk of AFib and bleeding. There is a huge amount of recent activity on EPA within the cardiovascular community and definitely needs to be included in any balanced presentation on omega-3s.

    I have systemic vasculitis. I got the idea of a can of sardines every day from you. Not sure if you explained this but it takes a few weeks for the omega-3's to saturate your cells, just in case people were expecting something immediate. Besides omega-3, my stack includes fisetin, magnesium l-threonate, vit D3 and I'll usually rotate some others in there, such as alpha lipoic acid. As the first responder, I can usually keep this beast at bay, at least until I get the doctors involved.

      The active ingredient in rat poison D-Con is so-called Vitamin D3. Yes you are eating rat poison when you supplement your diet with it.

    Nordic Natural ProOmega 2000 has 2150mg total omega3 (1125mgEPA, 875DHA) in a serving (2 pills). So is it reccomended we take two servings a day (4 pills)?

    I love smoked wild caught salmon with my eggs for breakfast. However, I heard that counted as "processed meat" and was bad for you just like processed deli meats are and you should avoid it. Any thoughts on that?

      For good or bad, processed meat means sodium nitrite. Smoked salmon, traditional smoked salmon, contains smoke chemicals that may be carcinogenic, but there's no evidence of that, and if you chose to dig into it, people who eat smoked salmon have better health outcomes than people who don't... much like Rhonda talking about mercury! Wild salmon is wicked healthy.

    I have always taken fish oil, but I am warming up to algae oil. As a more sustainable option. Just wish it was cheaper.

    Very persuasive and informative video for those who practice ¨How Not to Age¨. I wonder if there is such a thing as eating too much Salmon, like for lunch and dinner, daily. Could that raise your total and LDL cholesterol levels. And isn´t cholesterol responsible for heart attacks and strokes, the leading cause of death. From my limited reading, a total cholesterol level of 150 is better than 200 in maintaining unobstructed arteries . So, is eating fish daily a wise practice.? At home, I eat a vegetarian diet, but while I was on a cruise, I ate salmon as stated above, for 74 days and my cholesterol level increased drastically. Is there something like ¨too much of a good thing¨

    hi Dr. Patrick, there are some updates on Consumerlab, regarding fish oil supplementation, stating that healthy people (no cardiovascular disease) who supplement fish oil might be at a higher risk (13%) of developing atrial fibrillation and stroke (5%). Any thoughts on that?

      Chris masterjohn had an article about this called how essential are the essential fatty acids I believe. His conclusion was that if you have good levels of all the vitamins and minerals that they basically appear to not be essential, or even if they are it’s nearly impossible not to get the amounts required through a varied omnivorous diet. Everyone is so afraid of seed oils because they promote inflammation, and they certainly can, but omega 3’a are even more unstable and prone to oxidation than omega 6’s. Most animals have a more saturated fatty acid profile in their body fat. The reason fish like salmon, trout, sardines etc don’t is because they live in cold water. All the studies on omega 3’s show a mixed bag of results but no improvement in lifespan, and most oils are already oxidized before you ingest them and even if they somehow aren’t they oxidize inside your 98 degree body.

      If people were being genuine, they would note that pretty much every meaningful result regarding n-3s is observational. Also, they ignore the observation that there is an interspecies inverse correlation between general DHA and lifespan. *One* study with a monoacylglyceride shows a 14% increase in lifespan in *drosophila*--funded by the patent owner. Evidence is mixed, but Peat emphasizes that n-3 (pufa overall) are inherently sensitive to damage and antagonistic to respiration, which is undeniably true.

    Thank you for an in depth fact based discussion. My understanding is that supplements of fish oil have been shown to be highly oxidised and rancid so consumption of small fish is recommended over supplementation.
    Does Rhonda have any access to studies proving / disproving this?

      Yep, I’ve seen the same results of rancidity of commercially available fish oil products.
      It leads me to think though - since heat is an oxidative stressor…won’t cooking fish cause the oils to go rancid too?

      Don't take supplements because you want a lower concentration of blood thinner, maybe eat small amount of sea food or do grass fed meats.

      Yes. Omega-3 fatty acids only can be obtained by the diet or by supplemantation. Eat sardines or buy a high quality fish oil.

      I don't trust sources of olive oil anymore. There isn't enough produced to satisfy world production so its cut with seed oils no matter the brand.

    I wish you would go in depth on the sourcing and supplement quality. The lab grade product used in these studies is not the same as 99.99% of what's sold on the market with all the environmental pollutants and contaminants. Would also be interesting to see you cover algae oil, which would be a direct source of omega-3. Fish do not produce omega-3 so why not discuss marine plants?

      @@SACKBOY123432 Testing is widely available in the private sector, although if you had real healthcare you could ask your doctor about it. We have "socialised" healthcare in the UK, so we basically have very limited options unless we go private.

    I've just come across info suggesting that over supplementation of omega 3s can cause heart arrythmia. As someone who genetically has this issue anyway this has led me to momentarily cease taking the tablets (3 days in now). Does anyone have further concrete info on this?

      @@davidturner3188 maybe a little bit. I still get the heart 'jumps' at night but it's maybe slightly less so than previously. Not a massive difference yet though whereby I would say wow this has really worked. Then again my diet is awful currently at this time of year and I know with myself that if I'm not doing cardio and eating good then my palpitations are worse so probably January will be a better measuring stick

      I've been taking 4000 milligrams of omega 3 high strengh cod live oil for 45 years due to bad injuries to my knees as a child..im 60 and have athletic heart syndrome ( super fit) look 40 and not in a wheelchair.

    I think historically that when the British French American ships rolled the seven seas these adventurers ate lots of seafood and also opened their eyes to the world creating genius people like Charles Darwin, to Trains Plains and Automobiles electricity grids and computers, that era for the west is now over.       In mu experience, I don’t think they need it as long as they have a proper diet… I started giving my kids omega-3 when they started becoming more independent with eating out (change to secondary school as of 12 yo). I have less control over what they eat and want to make sure they do get enough…

      Studies show your assumption to be correct that smaller fish have less mercury, though mercury may possibly stay in the body longer than omega-3s so a low mercury algae or fish oil supplement should still be considered in my opinion.

      Yes, Vitamin-D3 K2 is perfect with conjunction of a high quality Omega-3. Looks for brands like Big Bold Health and Nordic Naturals. If you want to take magnesium with those supplements prior to bed it may help get into a faster REM sleep. The research is being conducted for sleep aid.
