Found myself completely immersed in Dr. Patrick's 2012/13 videos when I first found her a couple months ago and was very pleased to see that she continues to pump out content to this day. Thank you for all the work you have done. I have never learned so much regarding health and fitness in such a short amount of time.
As a nutrition researcher on Omega-3 in Japan & China some 35 yrs, it proved in front of my eyes with my study subjects that W3 fatty acids seem to bring magical benefits
Wow. So much insight. I’m African and carry the sickle cell trait (AS) and have been taking omega 3 supplements in addition to a omega 3 rich diet. Lately Have noticed from recent test that my blood oxygen levels has inexplicably dramatically increased from an average of 92 to 98… I’m guessing Omega 3,s to blame 🙂. Dr Rhonda Patrick thanks so much for your incredibly informative podcasts.
Interestingly; Tru deep abdominal breathing as well...when the lower lobes of the lungs get filled...one's O2Sats increase statistically, as well. Just need to have a simple $20 Pulse Ox,...to show this on one's self
There's something satisfyingly... Human... about people who feed their passions and devote their lives to nutrition. If Patrick was Queen of the World, she would become beloved for making the world believe she cares about them. Imagine her traveling the world and teaching the populations how to become healthier. it's a gift that might as well mean to say "You're worth it. You're worth taking better care of yourself." I swear there's a latent potential in her to be a great figure in history. If I'm biased for not saying the same thing of Harris, and many others like him, yeah you're right I'm being politically correct. The world is ready to listen to a voice like Patrick's. That iron is now hot. The way things are I'm sure shel'll continue to have mildly exponential organic (grassroots) growth for the rest of her life. This video is enlightening I can't wait to properly watch it in full.

Hey Rhonda. Great interviews! I’ve been measuring my Omega3 Index for 2.5 years with OmegaQuants. I’ve been able to move mine from 7% to over 17%. I eat mackerel daily and supplement with fish oil. I moved past the Japanese and almost reached dolphin level. Can this get too high? I’m 62 and my HRV ranges from 130 to 160. Is there a correlation between Omega3 and HRV?
Really well done interview with a scientist so gifted in clear, articulate discussion of such a complex field. How does Dr Harris keep himself so grounded while amassing so much knowledge?
I am taking 5 grams of fish oil every day, did so for the last few years. My reason was primarily a study that found that omega 3 can work for dry eyes with more than 70% of patients reporting to get better. And indeed, my dry eyes are totally gone, never returned.
Same result for me. Long term issues with dry eyes. Saw similar studies and took on average 3-4gm / day. The key I believe is to stay the course for 12 weeks. It's way too easy to give up when results don't happen in the first 4-8 weeks.
Something not mentioned in video or comments. I use omegas topically as well as internally. On my 74 yr old arthritic knees I prick a capsule with a pin and massage in and let absorb for a few hours. Once a day till pain goes, usually 2 or 3, then when needed... absolutely miraculous!!
Very interesting talk. Just a point on omega 3 in salmon, it wasn't stated that there would be a great difference if the salmon is farmed or wild! This fact would have a significant effect on the oil quality and the omega 3 content of the salmon, as farmed salmon are fed with pellets (which sometimes also contains colouring) rather than what a salmon would naturally eat in nature, this also goes for cows being fed grains and what ever else to produce as much as man wants to consume cheaply, rather than their natural food, grass. We as a being wonder why we are so sick.
Actually, there was a study, it had a result that defies the common narrative, so did not get much airtime. The farmed salmon have much more Omega 3. "Fatty acid profiles of commercially available finfish fillets in the United States" 2014
Depending on the grower the coloring fed to salmon is often the exact same molecule that colors wild salmon. I am not saying there aren't differences(farmed salmon are measurably different and usually have a higher fat content due to lower activity levels and direct fat supplementation) but the coloring isn't usually a problem.
At one time I was eating three cans of sardines a week. My omega three index was right around 8 but my mercury levels were high. I stopped eating fish altogether and started eating walnuts and flaxseed thinking those will help but my omega o3 index dropped to like 5.32 and epa level was barely above the lower reference limit. Then I started taking fish oil capsules (800mg epa and 600mg dha), o3 index went up to 11.37 after taking the fish oil for about 6 weeks. Now I’m taking 900mg EPA and 300mg DHA. Will test again after 6 months. Apparently I need more EPA. Also since EPA can be converted to DHA as needed, I think the higher epa is needed in my case.
You have a talent for finding the world's experts in so many different fields of research. What a treasure trove of research insights. I have watched this interview and taken notes at least 3 times.

You should not compare all people that have taken x units of Vit D3 with the control group, but different outcome Vitamin D3 levels. Nobody in their right mind can suggest a Vit D3 dose that would always with everyone. No, you would adjust it to reach a certain level that suggests positive outcome.
very interesting re covid @1:14:12 that those hospitalized omega-3 index was below 6 and most survivors were in the top quartile. The fact that none hospitalized were in the 6-8+ range ,leads to conjecture that those were not sick enough to be hospitalized. Fair assumption? Was there any FU studies done with larger db that confirmed these findings.
Hope your doctor friends will watch. We don't have Omega 3 index test in the Philippines. Does dried fish retains Omega 3? We have a lot of dried fish in the Philippines. Please have a test on dried fish.
Great interview! Omega-3 is good for lowering TG's but higher doses can increase LDL (due to DHA) but the EPA does not do this. Walnuts and other nuts contain another form ALA (that gets converted mainly to EPA & tiny amt to DHA) and reduces total LDL particles by 4.3% and also decreases TGs by a small amount. In March 2022, researchers found that consuming ALA in walnuts and flaxseeds etc was associated with a 10% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 20% reduced risk of fatal coronary heart disease. 1 regular fish oil capsule/day is ok but I would not overdo it. You can decrease CVS issues with just nuts and certain seeds. For weight loss I would stick with fish and some nuts
1:01:10 Is the information shown at the bottom of the screen about Lp-PLA2 really correct? I thought Lp-PLA2 plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and as predictive biomarker for future cardiovascular events. Lp-PLA2 is a vascular-specific marker of inflammation. The correlation of Lp-PLA2 with atherogenic risk is even greater considering that it is secreted by the macrophages of the atherosclerotic plaques and may well represent the transition to plaque instability. During inflammation of the arterial wall, Lp-PLA2 protein is localized within the plaque in high concentrations.
I love the information on these talks. They are so long is hard to listen to them in one sitting. Please create shorter clips of key points. Thank you!
Right now the biggest challenge with microalgal supplements is the concentration tends to be low. It's the right stuff, but getting enough of it in a cost-effective manner proves challenging.
@@FoundMyFitness Thanks so much Rhonda. I'm looking at a daily supplement that contains 250mg Omega-3 with 150mg EPA and 100mg DHA. That seems similar to krill oil supplements I've seen. I also take an ahiflower oil supplement that has 945mg ALA and 384 DHA. Trying to do my best to reduce pressure on fisheries and reduce heavy metal exposure. Hoping this is as good as it's going to get with algae and other plant sources.
@@FoundMyFitness The extra strength Nutravege version in the bottle form is less expensive per equivalent serving than some of the premium priced fish oil capsules
@@davenielsen413 I use algae oil as well because I am vegan. It is so expensive, but worth it considering all the benefits mentioned by Dr. Harris. Deva has a DHA (300-420 mg) + EPA (150-210 mg) supplement. It's sold on Amazon for about $27.

@@nutrience1144 Dr. Harris's early study using 2 salmon steaks + a half cup of salmon oil every day, showed that high dose toxicity is not an issue. Just the minimum to get best health.
I would also like to switch. Already found a supplement, it's more expensive and the EPA/DHA ratio is flipped. But I feel kind of bad taking a supplement that's likely derived from farmed fish. From the conversation, I couldn't really get if they know which ratio is better. Sometimes it seems like the dose is just set at some point because of a study and then they stuck with it, like the 4-gram dose that the FDA approved.
I am extremely interested in this new (at least to me) research development done on plants and nutrition. Done by Dr William Li, From ground to ground or (soil to soil) however you choose. It studies plants and their nutritional values ( preferably heirloom varieties) how these nutrients break down in the body. What nutrients enhance (helps the body absorb) each other. The same for spices like turmeric and pepper. ? What exactly do these individual nutrients do to our bodies and minds. Which nutrients when combined perform better than individually. Now the most interesting part is they are using the high end pharmaceutical equipment to investigate all of this. With this equipment and our ability to splice genes. We can make the best food on the planet more nutritious.
It would be great to see if there is any relation between red blood cell size variability and untreated sleep apnea. I suspect the oxygen blood saturation changes during sleep can alter the forming blood cells.
00:23:32 The problem with observational studies is that fish often replaces meat in the diet. So omega-3 status could be just a reversed indicator of meat consumption. The only randomized trial that they presented in the study did not reach statistical significance for cardiovascular disease.

The shown should be called “Between two cacti with Dr. Patrick”. Just kidding! Very informative as always! Thank you for bringing helpful information to the public!
The framing does have good symmetry, 2 cacti, 2 people, 2 back cushions, 2 water bottles, both people have legs crossed and angled about 45 degrees toward each other. Which cacti do you like better? I kind of like the one on left, it's quite stout and has clearly defined lobes - as though it didn't hesitate on decision to start a new lobe and committed to it. It may be fun to pretend it is the cacti that are having a discussion and deep dive into learning about omega 3s.
I experienced the nose bleeds while taking omega 3 fish oil supplements recommended by my physician. They were quite bad and getting worse over time, with the blood sometimes suddenly gushing out. My physician was baffled by them, as it was in the early days of fish oil popularity in the USA and not much was commonly known. The nose bleeds stopped when I happened to stop taking fish oil due to the “fish burps”. I hadn’t heard of the nose bleed risk. I looked into it and found reports of coastal Eskimos who ate diets high in omega 3 fatty acids getting nose bleeds, with some bleeding to death, like Dr. Harris mentioned. In the decades since I stopped taking fish oil, I’ve never had a nose bleed.
@@deborahdean8867 I don’t remember these many years later, though I do recall starting low and gradually increasing when I didn’t get the positive results my physician had hoped for. The takeaway for me was that if one starts to get nose bleeds, to reduce the dosage. I hadn’t seen any warnings about that at the time. Since nothing helped to reduce the fish burps for me, I decided at the time to try other things, which ended up working better for me, such as gluten grain avoidance.
@@deborahdean8867 I used to take about 5 capsules fish oil daily and no problems but when I replaced them with Krill at recommended level I got nose-bleeding (not badly). Krill contains more omega3 if I recall correctly although obviously it depends on how much you take. I cannot remember levels as I went vegan about 5 years ago so now I take algal omega3. But when I got nose-bleeding I was more worried about potential for brain haemorrhage as I am not young anymore and my mother died of brain haemorrhage (as do a lot of people when you look at the stats). You can now get omega3 index and omega6:omega3 ratio blood tests done fairly cheaply so I just aim to get in the recommended ranges on key readings and then go no higher on dosage, so that is what I would recommend. Get a baseline test and then take minimal amounts necessary to get in the right range on key readings. For the 6:3 ratio the hardest part is reducing omega 6 intake on western diets.
@@robman2095 I find I have a slightly noticeable bleeding ir bruising tendency if I take vit E , but I am on a blood thinner too. I take 4 grams omega 3 by prescription so I'm unsure how they make it. It's not fish oil. It does not seem to cause any greater bleeding risk to me sy that dose, but if I use an E supplement it definitely does.
Pretty much yeah, I switch between algal oil and fish oil every couple of months. Although it's a lesser potency it's more much sustainable since it's just water grass. I live in Canada so I use locally sustainable sourced oils, but there are tons of products out there, just have to be mindful of what you're reading.
Just found your channel Rhonda! I love how you bring up references & explanations of terms used for plebs like me to make sense of what's been said. A massive thank you for you consideration.
I took Nordic Omega 3's for a few years until Krogers quit carrying them. They raised my good cholesterol to 55. 40 had been normal for me most of my life. It raised my bad cholesterol to but the overall ratio was improved. I've read that either DHA or EPA is more responsible for raising the good cholesterol. Waiting for them to separate the 2 for a better product. I don't trust Omega 3 pills now that there is a problem with them going rancid so I eat canned sardines and that does not seem to affect my cholesterol number very much
I'm thrilled to hear scientists talking about the way large randomized trials (in general) often miss the truth because they ignore all relevant genetic variables (SNPs). This is the elephant in the room of medical science today. For example, aspirin doesn't prolong my bleeding time at all, but many decades ago, there were rare patients who blead to death during surgery because they had recently taken aspirin. (Presumably, the pro-clotting interaction of their clotting factors with their unusually aspirin-sensitive platelets was greatly diminished by aspirin.) No doubt genetic SNPs will someday explain this potentially lethal phenotypic variation. Go Rhonda !!! :)
More low hanging fruit to consider might be the ubiquitous 'co-morbidity' adverse effects inherent in the toxic metal lead body burden in bone, that can mobilize under any stress where the body needs more calcium? Modern bone lead levels commonly 100 to 1000 times that found in prehistoric bone?
In trying to assess the significance of RDW relative to the Omega-3 index would it be beneficial to also evaluate 25 hydroxy D status, which reportedly has an inverse relationship with RDW?
People keep mentioning Eskimos, but didn't later autopsy reports show that they actually have a high prevalence of arteriosclerosis? (Despite low levels of heart attacks. Probably because of omega 3s and physical activity.) PS Super amazing and informative interview, thank you!
Omega 3s helping with smoking risk could be a paradox, because the main weakness of omega 3s is oxidation, and smoking is a highly oxidative activity. So it wouldn't necessarily be that omega 3s "don't help with smoking", but rather smoking is very bad for omega 3s directly.
I so appreciate your content. Thank you. I just like to mention that the FDA should not be used as a competent source of anything until they STOP sleeping with big pharma. Just to let you know how some of us feel about the FDA. (I am not an anti-vaxxer.)
A lot of higher quality Omega-3 companies already do extensive testing(oxidation, environmental Contaminants etc). Currently I use Nutrasea fish oil and they have the consumer report for every batch. It's great stuff.
Great discussion. I wonder how much O3 index was a measure of overall lifestyle. Assuming that this was looked at, but it seems that higher O3 could represent an overall better diet.
So what's with Mongolia?! It's not like they has much of a fishing fleet. Right? You couldn't be much more landlocked. From whence do they obtain their DHA/EPA??
Wondering if they explored how hormone D levels might explain some of our variability? It affects so much, like 10% of all our genes, so why not this too? So, none of us have the same baseline on D! Also, baseline microbiome health & sleep quality with DeepSleep/N-REM repair systems functioning, or not? Dr.s Bill Harris & Stasha Grominak might have some fascinating discussions!
I have ApoE4 so I cannot eat much saturated fat. Can I get most of my calories from eating nuts and seeds instead of olive oil and avocados. I like eating my vegetables with nuts rather than olive oil and I cannot eat more than one avocado a day. Would this be okay or do nuts contain too much omega-6s? Do I just supplement with fish oil and eat oily fish to offset the omega-6s or do I have to restrict the intake of omega-6s as well?
As I understand it, the problem with ApoE4 is that myelin is compromised, which is the connection to Alzheimer's. So, it would make a lot of sense to eat the foods that are used to make myelin. Arachidonic acid is very important for myelin, but omega 3's lower arachidonic acid, so fish oil wouldn't be a good idea. Eat liver, dark chicken meat, egg yolks, goat cheese, and pork. Nuts and seeds are high in linoleic acid, which is a huge problem because that lowers arachidonic acid too, as it displaces it. Other myelin nutrients are choline, B12, cholesterol, lysine (dairy and fish), fat-soluble vit. A, E, K2, and vit. C, B1, B5, B6, zinc, and copper, serine (basic myelin building block), glycine, betaine, folate, and B6. My Mom had Alzheimer's but ate these foods and did amazingly well!

As I’m sure you’re aware people in many parts of the Arctic (and outside as well) consider “Eskimo” a derogatory term. Although some Alaskan people are ok with the term, we Canadians still prefer other terms, at least in my town(former)and my family. The most widely used is term to replace it is Inuit. I’m not trying to correct the individual using the term Eskimo, only saying that it’s offensive to many and distracts from the excellent info contained within this episode. I hesitated to mention this only because I’m fairly sure Dr. Harris is aware of the controversy around the term Eskimo and chooses to use it anyway, perhaps because when he was conducting his studies the term was still widely used. Thanks for your consistently excellent interviews. I consider you a brilliant interviewer. And thanks to Dr. Harris for sharing this valuable info and his considerable experience in this area of study.
My comment keeps getting deleted. Here are some studies Researchers have found that taking just one gram or more per day of fish oil substantially increased the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. See: Effect of Long-Term Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids Supplementation on the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Randomized Controlled Trials of Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, Circulation, Originally published6 Oct 2021 Researchers found that men who ate fish more than five times a week were 61 percent more likely to develop atrial fibrillation, compared to those who ate fish once a month. See: Relationship Between Fish Consumption and the Development of Atrial Fibrillation in Men," data from almost 17,700 male physicians in the Physicians' Health Study.May 18, 2006, presentation, Heart Rhythm Society's annual meeting, Boston Also see: European Society of Cardiology (ESC). "U-shaped curve revealed for association between fish consumption and atrial fibrillation." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 24 June 2013.
@@FoundMyFitness Thanks! By the way, this may answer your question about Japan: "The overall prevalence of AF is less than 1%, but in people aged 80 years or older the rate is approximately 7-14% in Western countries and 2-3% in Japan." Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in Asia and the world, Journal of Arrhythmia, Volume 28, Issue 6, 2012, Pages 330-337. So if the Japanese are eating high amounts of fish, it's not causing them to have significant AFIB rates. Perhaps there are other dietary or non-dietary factors involved besides Omega 3s.
@@jackbuaer3828 I see the statistics listed by you. There are thousands of coastal communities in Asia and possibly Africa and South America as well, that eat fish every single day and are not prone to increased risk of AFib. I can readily point to specific coastal communities in India where health markers and longevity, including cardiac and arrhythmia markers, are way better than inland. This looks like a correlation but hardly causal.

Lately Have noticed from recent test that my blood oxygen levels has inexplicably dramatically increased from an average of 92 to 98… I’m guessing Omega 3,s to blame 🙂.
"Almost reached dolphin level" 😂 that cracked me up
I loved this conversation! Thank you so much!
What supplements do you take ?
Same result for me. Long term issues with dry eyes. Saw similar studies and took on average 3-4gm / day. The key I believe is to stay the course for 12 weeks. It's way too easy to give up when results don't happen in the first 4-8 weeks.
Are you taking a supplement or eating fish?
@@jamies6534 Yes, same for me. Took at least a month to see results. Good that you mentioned that.
@@radlink14 Supplement. I am popping 5 pills each morning.
Wow, I haven't heard of that. Thank you.
Very good question asked and answered. Also the documentation is well worth reading. Thanks to both of you for a first class educational video.
@jeffm.8134 May I ask if you did test again after 6 months with the 900 mg EPA and 300 mg DHA and if so what were the results?

very interesting re covid @1:14:12 that those hospitalized omega-3 index was below 6 and most survivors were in the top quartile. The fact that none hospitalized were in the 6-8+ range ,leads to conjecture that those were not sick enough to be hospitalized. Fair assumption?

Wish they had discussed what he takes, what he recommends. Tons of info but no recommendations
THANKS RHONDA YOU ARE THE BEST 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️🌼🌼🌼🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!
Thank you for this informative interview on DHA. I also appreciate your footnotes.
In the plant vs. marine section discussing ALA vs. EPA, wondering how algal oil (a marine product) compares to fish oil in this analysis.

I think the problem until now is the dosage of EPA from Algae... But interesting indeed! (Which company/brand?)

I would also like to switch. Already found a supplement, it's more expensive and the EPA/DHA ratio is flipped. But I feel kind of bad taking a supplement that's likely derived from farmed fish.
Thank you for bringing us this wonderful knowledge!

The problem with observational studies is that fish often replaces meat in the diet. So omega-3 status could be just a reversed indicator of meat consumption. The only randomized trial that they presented in the study did not reach statistical significance for cardiovascular disease.

great interview; respectively wonder if term Eskimo is no longer appropriate?
How many grams per day did you take?
Thank you for all the info over the years, 15:40 was a good point!

Omega 3s helping with smoking risk could be a paradox, because the main weakness of omega 3s is oxidation, and smoking is a highly oxidative activity. So it wouldn't necessarily be that omega 3s "don't help with smoking", but rather smoking is very bad for omega 3s directly.

Is the Omegaquant index comparable to the Omegametrix index from Germany?
Yes. OmegaMetrix is Dr .Clemens von Schacky's company. He's mentioned quite a bit in the episode, particular around the time when the omega-3 index is initially discussed.
Dr Bill Harris says that the proportion of epa to dha is about 2 to 1. However, all the ones, I have come across are about 3 to 2 proportions.

See: Effect of Long-Term Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids Supplementation on the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Randomized Controlled Trials of Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, Circulation, Originally published6 Oct 2021
Researchers found that men who ate fish more than five times a week were 61 percent more likely to develop atrial fibrillation, compared to those who ate fish once a month.
