    I like this old man's videos. Grape nuts! I haven't had them in about 30 years... I've been meaning to get some malt extract so maybe I'll give this a go. Also, the resulting cake seems similar to cornbread, might be worth trying to turn some cornbread into an old-timey mouth destroying breakfast cereal.

      Exactly the same thing, except I use non-dairy milk with an acid like lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to make vegan buttermilk. It is also an excellent option for people with lactose intolerance.

    Great recipe! I'm in the same boat where I can't easily find Grape Nuts in the area that I live in. I tried a recipe that calls for putting the dough in a meat grinder, but it was a lot of elbow grease. I ended up switching to my food processor. I like the addition of malt. I'll try your recipe next. And if I may, next time try breaking up the paddy into smaller pieces. It'll be much easier to grind in the food processor. :-) Thanks for sharing your recipe!

    • @FlavorLab

      I agree the one done by hand was a bit course and wasn't so nice for eating, but the one I did in the coffee grinder came out pretty good. I really need to get a grain/meat grinder. It's on my list of things to buy haha.
      I am glad you enjoyed the video thanks for watching!

    1:45 Hey, i strongly recommend not wax paper here bcuz the wax paper will begin to degrade at those temps. Its probs minimal for one batch and the short time, but just in general its best to avoid usin wax paper in the oven at all rly. Even if the temp were below 350f it wud still be a risk, tho at that pt its much less of one.
    Rly the only place your wax paper can go that warms up is the microwave, tho thats not the case for all wax paper for some reason

    I love taking Grate Nubs and microwaving them with milk. When they are desired consistency and heat level (don't be mistaken, over microwaved Brate Nugs, are as hot as the core of the sun). Next put in some butter, whatever kind of sugar, cinnamon and raisins. Mix well, look up the half life of the sun's nuclear core. Splash some milk on it. Bazinga! Amazing breakfast.

      Thank you for sayin parchment paper here instd of wax paper like in the vid. Pls be safe ppl and dont cook with wax paper; the risks may be minimal but ya rly dont want wax in your food nor do you want it drippin down on any heatin elements as it can do.

      May be way past late and maybe ya got an oven since... But this recipe cud probs be made in the microwave all the same. For the initial bake, id use like 50-60% cook power there (up to 70% if ya got a rly low watt of like 900 or less) and knowin that itll take a while tho probs closer to a half hr total.
      The second bake in a microwave wud best be done around 20-30%, maybe 40% if rly low watt, for similar results to a standard oven.

    • @SylviaRustyFae
      @SylviaRustyFae ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, you cud do this all in a pan on a stovetop all the same tho youll wanna cover it for at least the initial bake portion and probs heat on medium or even low-medium to avoid burning.
      Then after crumbling it, cook it uncovered on low to low-medium, if not simmer even, and stir regularly to assure even cookin

      @@carolinagossn6753 "The name may have come from the cereal's resemblance to grape seeds, or from its nutty flavor; C. W. Post may also have intended it to refer to its content of glucose, which Post called "grape sugar.""
      So it sounds like this is one of the many cased in etymology where we are unsure how a name for somethin came to exist.
      There seem to be just guesses with little actual evidence to back them up as more valid than any other theory.
      Honestly, the theory that feels most likely to me is just that its gotta a somewhat nutty flavour and they look akin to grape seeds; particularly grape seeds over a hundred yrs ago which were bigger too
