Hydroxyzine

  • Hydroxyzine will be prescribed more than 7 million times this year. Originally known as Atarax and Vistaril, hydroxyzine is an antihistamine in the same family as Benadryl or diphenhydramine. Unlike the newer non-sedating antihistamines, hydroxyzine readily passes into the brain and causes sleepiness.
    Hydroxyzine remains available by prescription only. It assists in treatment of a veritable menu of conditions ranging from allergies to itch and motion sickness to anxiety. Hydroxyzine provides sedation and may be useful as a non-addictive sleeping pill. It may also boost the analgesic effect of opioids.
    Side effects associated with hydroxyzine appear similar to the other antihistamines. Recent concerns in Europe suggest some individuals appear susceptible to electrocardiographic abnormalities that may lead to cardiac arrhythmias. For this reason the EMA, the European equivalent of the FDA, suggests as low a dose as possible for as short a period as feasible. Those concerns do not seem to be mirrored in the United States.
    Due to hydroxyzine’s likelihood of causing sedation, caution seems appropriate when engaging in any activities that require mental alertness. It might pose a danger to drive a motor vehicle or operate heavy equipment while under the effects of the drug. The half life of hydroxyzine rises from 14 hours in an adult to nearly 30 hours in senior citizens.
    One of the metabolic by-products of hydroxyzine is cetirizine. This later compound is the generic of Zyrtec, a popular non-sedating antihistamine. Interestingly of all of the non-sedating antihistamines, Zyrtec seems most likely to cross into the central nervous system and promote sleepiness.

      I have severe allergies and this works really good for hives....and anxiety. It makes you really slow down after about an hour and and half after you take it. Be prepared to either take a nap or try to fight it the best you can by keeping active. I've been using it off and on for years and it still has the same effect on me. I only take as needed... meaning only when I am covered in hives and can't stand the itchiness anymore. It works almost right away for allergies.

I’m hoping drugs like this that work for some people can help us tackle anxiety regularly. So I am an alcoholic who is weaning off alcohol. I can't stop completely because it causes massive anxiety issues and can be dangerous. I told the doctor I cannot have any type of narcotic, but I need something to help control the anxiety and some other symptoms. They prescribed this to me and it has worked wonders. First couple of days it caused me to be quite sleepy, but after a while it just kinda... calms me down. I am super happy they went with this medicine to help me go through what I'm doing. So far I'm down to about half the amount of alcohol I drink and I regularly just don't want to drink (thank god). The loss of concentration is real, but it isn't anything crazy. Seems that the first few days are when the symptoms are the most common.

    Hey there.... just a tip from me. I was prescribed Doxepin for depression and trouble sleeping. I was on it about 10 years. Meanwhile I thought maybe I could do without the doxepin. Doc had me taper off and was ok at first but then I got this really awful sensitivity to touch. It would start as an itch that would turn into a very painful burning itch. Even a slight touch could set it off. I tried about 2 months and had to go back on. Later another doctor changed it to hydroxyzine. It works well for me. I don't know if I had an unusual reaction coming off the doxepin but it was torture. Thanks for this good lesson.... I learned from you and it's the first time I've come across you.

    I’ve been experiencing extreme anxiety about my heart rate recently, and I ended up going to get some testing done like ECG, stress test, and ultrasound. Even after all of that my anxiety still persists. I’ve had an extended holter monitor for 14 days and I still can’t get it out of my head. After taking this specific medication I’ve noticed extra instances of ectopic heartbeats, and a little bit of relief when it comes to constantly being aware of my own heart rate. So I suppose I would be asking, does this drug increase the chances of my ectopic heartbeats?

I was constantly worried I was going to die, was constantly checking my heart rate and blood pressure, had an ultrasound on my heart, had to wear a Mobile monitor that measured my blood pressure every hour, the whole works. Was prescribed hydroxyzine , and it all went away. The anxiety of feeling my heartbeat, the actual awareness of my heart beat, everything. Actually 10 days ago stopped taking hydroxyzine after taking it every single day for over 3 years (which is not a good idea) , and it helped me Through my tough times.

    Just took this medicine (Half of 25 mg) to see how it would affect me. After a half hour, I felt normal & took another 12.5 mgs.
    It feels very much like a benzodiazepine to me, except you dont have the slow body feeling. Over all its nice, and I'm so glad to feel normal for once. Just worried after a few days it will lose its effects.

    this medication literally only works as an antihistamine. prescription benedryl. 10/10 do not recommend for my generalized anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety & ptsd.
    my psych said i can take it to help me sleep if needed, rather than wasting my klonopin that i need during the day.

    sucks that I have to take 25mg daily just to feel normal man.....Like, if I don't take it, my body would start to itch uncontrollably whenever I'm anxious or nervous or just hot.

    Was just prescribed 50mg a day for sleep aid, and the results are in, I took 1/4 of a pill soon as I got them, didn't notice much and then I took the rest few hours later, was knocked out for a sold 10 hrs and woke up feeling pretty good. My opinion is cut these into what you're comfortable with, so you may have to take one to know what you can tolerate or how much sleep you want, but yes they will put you in la la land.

    • @jameshall9402

      @@kurbicksan4917 I would go ahead and give it a try. It might work fine for you. I was also taking other medications at the same time, So that could have been why I had such a terrible reaction. But everyone is different. For me, I literally would just sit in a chair and do nothing... I mean absolutely nothing. There are many medications for anxiety, and I have taken amitriptyline for many many years and it works wonderfully. Ativan was the best medication that I ever took, but it's rarely prescribed nowadays because it's highly addictive. Gabapentin also worked very well for me. You might wanna give that a try. I wish you all the luck!

    One thing that’s worth mentioning is that Hydroxyzine, unlike some newer generation antihistamines, can affect heart rythm and cause tachycardia. I had a doctor prescribe me Hydroxyzine for insomnia despite the fact that I had already mentioned to him that my dad passed away last year of a heart attack at the age of 59. He was also made aware that I was born with a small VSD and that recently, I feel like my heart has been causing me problems. Despite all this, he prescribed me Hydroxyzine and today, after a short workout, I felt like I was going to stroke out. I cut the medicine earlier today after just 2 days. Be careful and always do your own research.

    • @Brandon-xp4cz
      @Brandon-xp4cz ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know where you got the info about it causing tachycardia. The issue they have found is a low chance of causing a long QT interval. Symptoms are dizziness passing out and heart palpitations. Risk factors are a history of having qt interval issues and electrolyte Imbalance issues.

    • @JairoMauricioGarciajr-xk4ej
      @JairoMauricioGarciajr-xk4ej ปีที่แล้ว

      Tathicardia is what causes heart palpitations. The fact that it affects QT interval time is the reason why patients who have a history of heart issues should not be prescribed Hydroxyzine.

    My 3 year old daughter has to take this whenever she has a flare up
    she has rare autoimmune liver disorder and gets attacks of extremely bad gas and abdomen pain so bad hard for her to breathe
    I feel bad giving it to her but after trying everything creams and lotions to soaps or baths
    Oatmeal baths and scrubs DO help her but nothing else stops her "bile rash" , itchiness and inability to sleep like Ararat does
    I only give it when her skin is peeling off and she sin a lot of pain sometimes she can go months without it
    It's still concerns me but better and safer than the other options
