I made it through perimenopause on diet and exercise alone. I had insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, a 30 pound weight gain and joint pain. Things settled down after menopause, but four years into post menopause, I still could not sleep well. I hadn’t had a full night of sleep in 13 years. I was even afraid to drive. That’s when I found a menopause specialist who put me on body identical hormones. They were a lifesaver! I sleep all night long now, my blood pressure returned to normal, I’m no longer stiff, etc. I’m still struggling to lose the weight I gained, but my most important thing was sleep, and it’s been great!
This woman’s life story is an inspiration. And I’m so grateful. She has made my life better. I have always loved life and ppl. But menopause had me suicidal and none of my physicians diagnosed it. Even my gyno. I read Dr Haver’s book. Changed my perspective. And I’m finally getting myself back. I have hope for having a full life again.
@ I was denied hrt by my gynecologist. So I found an otc plant based (supposedly bioidentical) hrt online. After about a month of using it, my skin stop crawling, I stopped having sores in my mouth, and fewer hot flashes. My hair is growing back, and I feel better. I think I may still have a ways to go, so I’m searching for a more informed gynecologist.
Her holistic approach to menopause is refreshing and much-needed. I appreciate her emphasis on the importance of diet, lifestyle, and stress management. Thanks for sharing.
Dr Mark, PLEASE never feel that you don't have a place or voice in this conversation. You have led the charge in SO MANY areas!! Don't back off now, we will always need YOU❤️🌟❤️🌟
Dr Haver is my menopause guru and Dr Hyman is my lifestyle guru. So happy to see you working together. We will all benefit from doctors in all walks of life combining knowledge to finally help ALL women. Thank you for this awesome and informative show.
We have a aunt who had a hysterectomy at 42 was put on estradiol. Her zest for life is contagious She is now 85 and still on it and now on a patch!!!! She was also a RN for her entire career. On the other hand her sister, our other aunt is 90 and has had multiple bone breaks, has severe cardiovascular issues and uses a walker and a cane, and has dementia as well. She cannot leave her home and has had to have a caregiver for years :*( The comparison between the two is astounding.
Your wife is suffering from abrupt drop in her estrogen levels and this affects her entire body. Women's health especially is grossly under researched. Dr. Lisa Mosconi s research shows that on average the brain has a 40 percent drop in ATP production which cause nasty mood changes in perimenopause. Buy the book " Estrogen Matters "by Dr Avrum Bluming and Dr.CarolTavries to learn what symptoms estrogen causes.Consider the newer forms of transdermal hormone replacement .if you are aware of the Women's Health Initiative was a severely flawed study. Estrogen does not cause breast cancer.
So great you have empathy for your woman and want to help her. You (and her) watching this vid is helpful and there is also lots more information by Dr MC Haver on YT, IG and/or TT. Good luck! ❤️
It’s great seeing a man so supportive of his wife going through this. As a woman, it was a game changer for me, but after going on BHRT, I’m feeling so much better.
I have suffered for over 10 years, frozen shoulder, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, high cholesterol ,weight gain, etc. My OBGYN immediately told me HRT was off the table due to breast cancer in my family, she would only offer me an antidepressant and a statin, both of which I declined and continued to suffer for years. Hopefully with these videos and more knowledge regarding this issue, my daughter's and all woman will not have to suffer like my generation and those before me. Thank you!
I've struggled with sleep on and off all my life. Tried sleeping pills and melatonin, but both left me with a hangover. Utrogestan (progesterone) was a game changer when I went on HRT at age 57. I sleep well and feel good the next day. Wish I'd been prescribed it in peri-menopause to help me sleep.
Hi I’m a 48 breast cancer survivor and although I love listening and getting all the amazing information I can’t help but feel so defeated when I hear all of the finding of HRT and topical estradiol and none of it applies to me because of my cancer diagnosis. Do you have any recommendations for women who have had cancer and suffer from all the standard menopausal symptoms along with having had chemo, radiation and unable to take HRT? I’ll keep listening and hoping to find someone as passionate about educating those of women who are the exception not the rule.
If you goto Estrogen matters on TH-cam Dr Bluming is a retired oncologist who's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. He has an amazing book called estrogen matters which I understand really gives good information for post breast cancer recovery.
Dr Haver does go into the issues that women who've had cancer must consider in discussion with their Dr in regards to HRT. There can be options. Outside of that, there are lifestyle factors that can contribute to better health in menopause. I recently started weight training and love it. It's not just that I feel stronger, it's the mental challenge I enjoy when it's difficult. That aspect of it has helped me get a piece of my old self back.
WOW, I so needed to hear this today! I'm 43 years young and struggling. Then I found out I have vEDS (Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). Now, I am trying to find and learn even more ways to help myself. I truly wish I could find a menopause educated provider like Dr. Mary Claire Haver that is near me, up here in Michigan!! 9 years ago I stopped eating peanuts, all nuts, dairy, wheat, egg, soy, oat, fish, pork, beef, venison. For 6 months and then added venison and friends grass fed beef. Then did that for almost another 1 & 1/2 while nursing my son, he passed beef at 6 months old. I felt so much better back then. I clearly and sadly went back to eating junk. Now in pre menopause everything seems to be spiking up. So I am looking to change every thing, just like she said, to feel better. There is a world of information is hard to know what to do for me without having a doctor like you guys❤
Yes! Your diet your diet your diet your diet. She never answered his question. I'm 58 and I have no symptoms because personally I went carnivore. I feel absolutely wonderful. I just recently cut coffee and I feel even better. I eat meat, eggs, bacon, and butter. I wash it down with water. Everything is organic, grass fed Pasteur raised. My water is from a glass bottle or home filter. I use specific makeup, perfume, and hygiene products catered to my lifestyle. I feel better than I did in my 20, 30, and 40 combined. Also I sleep like a baby 6 to 8 per night. We need to treat our bodies better. It's simple.
@@Katepwe Noted. I stated personally I'm doing carnivore... for ME. It works for me. In the end it's the diet and she did not answer the question. I’m not on carnivore diet but I started fasting for hormone balance. Year 47 was a disaster. I started fasting and 48 has been great and I have no symptoms of perimenopause.
I have been taking Progestin for a few years now for help with my fibroids and since all of my symptoms pointed to estrogen dominance. I take 200 mg at night before bed and it has made me feel sane again. Before I started taking it I felt like I was losing my mind and felt like my anxiety was making life unbearable. My GP had wanted to put me on an antidepressant as a pill like that is there solution for everything. I hope that we can continue to get more doctors to look at what is causing the issue instead of always giving you another pill. I guess we have the Pharm industry to thank for that! Also, I have never had a GYN or GP offer or be interested in testing my hormones. I have been told that it is not tell them much. I am a 53 year old woman that is still in perimenopause.
Two of my favorite doctors! You guys are amazing. I loved the discussion about progesterone. Endocrinologist Dr. Jerilynn Prior's work at CEMCOR in Vancouver BC is also really great.
She is so pretty and has such a natural looking makeup. Thank you for this video. Since menopause, I feel put out to pasture.Ive told all my doctors I cant sleep and they just shrug their shoulders. One even told me to do marijuana! Crazy bad doctors.
That's horrible! Bad doctors!! Dr. Haver changed my life! At 45 years old, I wasn't sleeping, gaining belly fat, lack of libido, etc.etc. Finally, I read her books, watched her on a couple of podcasts, & I found relief. I go through MYAlloy & get my HRT. Our HMO doesn't pay attention to any impurities in a woman's life!
I agree with Dr Hyman every woman needs to address their lifestyle issues first I am a qualified personal trainer and I lift very heavy weights and run consistently however I got osteopenia in my lower spine I started taking estrogen and vaginal progesterone I took the vaginal progesterone as there is a lower risk of breast cancer however the doctor never told me that if my womb does not absorb the vaginal progesterone the lining of my womb will thicken 2 years after starting hrt I started to get heavy bleeding every 5 weeks even though my periods stopped many years ago and then I had to get 1 polyp removed it was so painful the bleeding continued for a year and this week I had to have another hysteroscopy where I had 2 polyps removed under sedation it was so painful being on estrogen has messed me up and if the bleeding continues I will need to have a coil fitted also the worst thing is I put on 9 kg on weight even though I hadnt changed my diet I just want to make women aware of the side effects as hrt is not suitable for everyone I believe good sleep lifting heavy weights cardio and good nutrition and supplements should be the first thing addressed
I am 54 and I think God for this women!!! I found her 6wks ago and my life changed I decided to try HRT that was the best decision I have ever made 6wks ago I just wanted to end my life😢. I have always been healthy working out being carnivore and it 14:58 worked, then I turned 54!!!Being on HRT I am back!!! I up 5 days a week working out and eating my proper diet carnivore I have lost 12pds. I take estradiol patches, progesterone at night and testosterone during the day. This a tool to help you manage life you still have to put work in. 😊
When I was 36 y.o. and just beginning my insomnia journey that would last 26 years, I too was given Prozac and Ambian to help me sleep. What a joke. One more reason to not trust the pharmaceutical industry. After 26 years of not sleeping, and never feeling rested a doctor finally offered me estradiol and testosterone pellets with progesterone caps at night. Less than a week later I was sleeping through the night getting 8-9 hours of solid, restful sleep. Boy, am I pissed off. The Women’s Health Initiative inaccurately blamed estrogen for causing cancer and denied millions of women the necessary replacement hormones that could have alleviated horrific suffering for years. THIS is one more reason I don’t trust the conventional medical establishment. Hopefully the next generation of women and girls will be believed and supported instead of shamed and denied real help.
I’m 45 and I believe I have frozen shoulder. It first began on the left shoulder and shortly thereafter on the right too but not to the same extent at the left. I suffered sleeping for months until a friend recommended that I take Tylenol/Advil Pm for the pain which I still do unfortunately. Despite the shoulder pains, I’ve still dedicated time to go to my gym at least 3x/wk and work out. I’ve modified movements where needed but I’ve made it a point to use my arms instead of not using them and make things worse in the long run. Fortunately for me, I plan to make an appt with Dr Haver’s wellness clinic soon as it’s a little under an hour away from my home. ❤ My gyn couldn’t help me at all because I still have somewhat regular cycles and my estrogen level was “normal” when she did my bloodwork.
Having breast and uterine cancer in my mid forties, then being tossed into post menopause I know the struggle. Thank you Dr. Hyman and Dr. Haver. A few questions. If someone does all the good things you talk about and still have lower belly pouch, can you speak to cosmetic surgery or anything else I may need to try at this point. Why do doctors tell you that checking your hormone panel is not something they recommend., because they fluctuate so much, so its not needed. Lastly, I know men who struggle with andropause, can you do a show on this Dr Hyman?
Thanks for your very balanced view here. I was on oral progesterone for a couple years which helped my symptoms a lot (was pre menopausal). Then I was diagnosed with hormone positive breast cancer and quickly went off that as well as having my ovaries removed (surgical menopause). The night sweats are truly miserable, I’ve tried veozah, vitamin E, gabapentin, etc. I’m desperate to sleep. any non hormonal suggestions? I am a dietitian and personal trainer so have that piece squared up decently considering how crummy I feel after all the breast cancer treatments
For me it was going off low estrogen birth control, a few years later, severe muscular skeletal pain. Dr. wanted to give me an anti depressant . Did not take that for sure! Movement disorder after going off the estrogen. Panic attacks. Urinary issues, and only gave me1 prescription of the estrogen creme. 58 now, an in search for a gynecologist who has some knowledge of new research! That is the hard part.
I started natural topical progesterone. Had a hysterectomy but have overies still I’m 56. Some hot flashes but I have really bad joint hip pain and leg pain. Have tried low estrogen but had severe anxiety with it.
Fabulous discussion with two of my favourite doctors! Thank you so much for all the great work you do!!! ❤ I loved Mark's comment: The most important sexual organ women have is between their ears! ❤😂
I am 48 years old and am having a horrible time with perimenopause. Hot flashes, night sweats, body aches, elevated A1C, LDL, blood pressure and anxiety and panic attacks when going to the doctor. I eat lots of fruit and veggies and do weight bearing exercises as well as Pilates. My doctor wants to put me on blood pressure medicine, anxiety medicine and possibly a medicine for my A1C. I don’t want to take any of that and not sure what other options I have since I can’t take HRTs because of breast cancer and uterine cancer being in my family.
Cut out the carb foods, or at least greatly decrease them. Ketogenic diet, or, even better, carnivore for awhile (after gradual transition from carbs).
I only wish when I was going through perimenopause my doctor would have told me and helped me. They just said nothing we can do until you are in menopause. (No periods for a year). I am 64 now and am taking estradiol patch oral progesterone and the vaginal cream. How long can I keep doing it?
A Dr. that does not look into giving you a estradiol patch after a hysterectomy is wrong. You need it now more than ever. No male would ever be put through this :*(. We have a aunt who is 85 and is amazing. She had a hysterectomy at 42 she is still on estradiol. You do not need a progesterone without a uterus. She has 2 homes and is incredible!!!
Thank you both❤ I used to get joint pain but after taking Vit D with K2 they have almost gone. I also only eat protein diet and veg- so predominantly Keto.
I don’t know how to find a menopause-educated doctor. I have fibrocystic breasts and every two years it seems they make me do a breast biopsy and I have no familial history of breast cancer. It is so frustrating. I am concerned about hormones that would increase my cancer risk, however my cholesterol has been high over ten years and I have heart palpitations and never sleep more than 2-3 hours and suffer terrible depression and anxiety attacks. I can’t tolerate antidepressants. I have tried all the natural things. I just need someone to help me.
Go to the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) and plug in your zip code in the websites search engine…it will generate perimenopause specialists closest to where you live. 😊
Very informative podcast. Too bad many doctors and countries are ignorant and see women as all being the same. They apply cut-off of ages to HRT such as 57 years old. What happens then for the person who goes through late menopause at 57 or later? Surely laws made within the medical and political systems are not looking to better their female counterparts. Maybe I see this incorrectly.
Not a lot of great insight on different non-pharmacological approaches and root causes. She did not answer a lot of your questions regarding those issues and beat around the bush. You answered your own questions, doctor. 😅 What about how the thyroid and adrenals are connected? What about how vitamin D and the role it plays in PMS and PMDD. What about the high amounts of alcohol, caffeine and sugar that women are ingesting nowadays along with low fiber intake that’s contributing to the obesity epidemic, PCOS, infertility, menopausal symptoms, metabolic syndrome, etc. Yes, there is a time and place for prescription of HRT, but I think those other issues need to be addressed first.
Thank you for this discussion! I wish my docs had known why I had hair thinning back in my early 40’s. It was progesterone all along. Fibroids grew for the same reason. Autoimmune disease came on in my 40’s as well. These are all related to PROGESTERONE! Which is ANTI-INFLAMMATORY!
Dr Hyman may I suggest that you interview Carol Petersen. She’s much more knowledgeable, on this topic, she has a list of 23 symptoms that can eradicated with bio identical progesterone. She started out as a pharmacist in 1972. Dr Joseph Mercola recently (just this week!) interviewed Carol and she’s would be excellent as an interviewee with more exact information and be more helpful than this sweet lady. Dr Hyman you had to drag out info from this lady bc you knew endocrine disruptors are one of top problems with women’s health, as well as men. Carol Petersen has a TH-cam channel & website. Dr Mercola's interview with Carol Petersen is on his TH-cam channel. These will help women with more specific information backed by science. Ty for reading this. You saved my life 28 years ago bc of your PBS tv documentary…I greatly appreciate you!! Blessings!
Thank you. I respect this lady as a MD but she's pushing her products and HRT. She may be in a partnership. I would advise all to do their own research.
@@relaxationunwind4377 I see no reason be suspect of pharmacist Carol Petersen. She's very knowledgeable. And yes, I am doing my own research. However, I see no reason why Dr Mark Hyman should not interview Carol. Dr Hyman has excellent interview skills. Thank you for your comment to me. Have a great day. 😊
I think the scaremongering has been the opposite. Every doctor I've seen has been against HRT because "it causes cancer." It wasn't until I found someone trained in menopause that the tables turned. I've never heard of anyone being pushed into HRT, quite the reverse.
It worked for me and I am so grateful. You are correct though. Not every woman is a candidate however every woman has the right to be educated so that they can make an informed decision. 😊
I wanted to also mention even though I stopped taking estrogen and vaginal progesterone last April my womb lining is still very thick as my gynaecologist who did my hysteroscopy said it is not in a normal range you have to be so careful taking estrogen and progesterone
Frozen shoulder happens even if healthy. I developed it in one shoulder in early 50’s and noticed it as I was on my daily walk. I thought it was a muscle pull at first and just got worse over two weeks then finally went to orthopedic who prescribed PT. Dealt with this very painful issue for 18 months, couldn’t sleep - just awful. PT is essential. Then my left shoulder started shortly after my right shoulder was healed! I knew what it was immediately and began the pT exercises I learned about immediately at home that same day. That shoulder wasn’t as bad- bit effected me about 10 months. Dont wait! Begin PT immediately!
I just started getting the frozen shoulder after I kind of had a little injury but oddly enough, the other shoulder started getting it and it had nothing to do with the injury on my right shoulder. I was just turning 65 but in perfect health except for the shoulder pain. Please tell me what you do for physical therapy. Where do I even begin?
Her diet ideas are horrible for me. Estradiol patches all the way though but I don’t tolerate micro progesterone any route. Prempro is nuts to me and expensive. But it’s oral synthetic estrogen and oral progestin and the same progestin as in Depo that causes bone loss why? And Prempro increases blood clot risks and breast cancer risks, no thanks. If I try progesterone again, it will be micro progesterone.
But birth control has estrogen in it and it's causing a bunch of health problems so is this an overdose of estrogen or is estrogen not all that great to try to have more of?
48 yrs old high sex drive my entire life...menopausal, night sweats. Hysterectomy in mid 30's. Still have ovaries. Headaches now almost everyday since right b4 i turned 48 yrs old, pains in joints that are unbearable. No meds or hormones. Pretty sure I need bio identical hormones

Did all these awful side effect occur taking bio-identical hormones and with pulsed progesterone along with estrodiol?
I am 54 and I think God for this women!!! I found her 6wks ago and my life changed I decided to try HRT that was the best decision I have ever made 6wks ago I just wanted to end my life😢. I have always been healthy working out being carnivore and it 14:58 worked, then I turned 54!!!Being on HRT I am back!!! I up 5 days a week working out and eating my proper diet carnivore I have lost 12pds. I take estradiol patches, progesterone at night and testosterone during the day. This a tool to help you manage life you still have to put work in. 😊
What are the recommended Taurine, Magnesium, B6 supplements? 🙏🏼
Yes all these things are happening to me 😔 doing research, I’m happy for this podcast ty!!

The hip function changes. Its all about the hips. When the hips are compromised, it affects everything.
Wow My Frozen shoulder started around that time…
I am 48 years old and am having a horrible time with perimenopause.
“A lot of people not talking about it, Sarah Godfrey…” is this what you said/meant?
I only wish when I was going through perimenopause my doctor would have told me and helped me. They just said nothing we can do until you are in menopause. (No periods for a year). I am 64 now and am taking estradiol patch oral progesterone and the vaginal cream. How long can I keep doing it?
Indefinitely.
What if we have no ovaries. I’m 53. Had them removed at age 33. Now having mental issues, anxiety and blood pressure issues.
A Dr. that does not look into giving you a estradiol patch after a hysterectomy is wrong. You need it now more than ever. No male would ever be put through this :*(. We have a aunt who is 85 and is amazing. She had a hysterectomy at 42 she is still on estradiol. You do not need a progesterone without a uterus. She has 2 homes and is incredible!!!
How about ANY cancer risk??????????
Hrt is giving me bothersome side effects, should I keep taking it? Its only been 2 weeks
are you taking bio identical hormones and also pulsing the progesterone?
@ progesterone daily
Thank you both❤
I used to get joint pain but after taking Vit D with K2 they have almost gone.
Try Lugol’s Iodine (Dr Brownstein’s protocol on fibrocystic breast disease)

Very informative podcast. Too bad many doctors and countries are ignorant and see women as all being the same. They apply cut-off of ages to HRT such as 57 years old. What happens then for the person who goes through late menopause at 57 or later? Surely laws made within the medical and political systems are not looking to better their female counterparts. Maybe I see this incorrectly.
Not a lot of great insight on different non-pharmacological approaches and root causes. She did not answer a lot of your questions regarding those issues and beat around the bush. You answered your own questions, doctor. 😅
What about how the thyroid and adrenals are connected?
I'm subscribed but these videos never show up on my feed
I need doctor Marie Claire to help me 😢please
@janicerobinson5286 I'm suspicious of Dr. Mary. I know who Carol Petersen is and Yes...he should interview her.
@ oohh! Sorry i misunderstood. My apologies. I’m glad we’re on the same page now. Hooray!
Also there is so much scaremongering about how women must take hrt remember it won't suit every woman
I think the scaremongering has been the opposite. Every doctor I've seen has been against HRT because "it causes cancer." It wasn't until I found someone trained in menopause that the tables turned. I've never heard of anyone being pushed into HRT, quite the reverse.
It will for a lot though. It’s knowledge not scaremongering.
It worked for me and I am so grateful. You are correct though. Not every woman is a candidate however every woman has the right to be educated so that they can make an informed decision. 😊
I wanted to also mention even though I stopped taking estrogen and vaginal progesterone last April my womb lining is still very thick as my gynaecologist who did my hysteroscopy said it is not in a normal range you have to be so careful taking estrogen and progesterone
did you take bio identical estrodiol and pulsed progesterone?
Right from birth as babies we are subjected to heavy metals.😪
What is PT?
@@petitfour7687physical therapy
@@petitfour7687I was wondering the same thing but I think it means physical therapy.
Some women can’t tolerate any progesterone unfortunately. Makes them suicidal.
Japan ❤ sugar and simple carbs. Where is he getting his research from about the Japanese eating less sugar?
Her diet ideas are horrible for me. Estradiol patches all the way though but I don’t tolerate micro progesterone any route.
Prempro is nuts to me and expensive. But it’s oral synthetic estrogen and oral progestin and the same progestin as in Depo that causes bone loss why? And Prempro increases blood clot risks and breast cancer risks, no thanks. If I try progesterone again, it will be micro progesterone.
But birth control has estrogen in it and it's causing a bunch of health problems so is this an overdose of estrogen or is estrogen not all that great to try to have more of?
not same type of estrogen
So it's synthetic and that makes it bad, but natural estrogen is good?
Menopause is nothing to “survive” ignorant clickbate.
The Japanese are sugar fanatics.
Thank you Dr Hyman! ❤
