    I've been installing since 1975 and been working for myself since 1987. I have never owned anything but a star roller. After using the roller you set it down then brush the carpet pile once or twice before moving your weight or the Seamerdown forward. The carpet pile doesn't get 200° and so the only way that the pile can get changed from the heat is if you move slowly, set your iron on 4, and use a piece of railroad iron as a seam weight........ which sadly here's the way many carpet installers work.
    I also work my seam into the carpet rather than with it because it's easier to be sure that the carpet pile is not down inside the seam when the two sides go together. All you have to do is brush the carpet flat before you move the Seamerdown onto the carpet.
    Rules are made to be broken and it's all about technique anyway.
    The only thing you didn't mention is that edge ceiling with hot melt can reduce seam peaking because they are melted together edgewise also. It's too bad that know it all installers don't want to try something new or different.

    Seam is cool enough to power stretch after 15 minutes. Keep your iron set just under 3 for most carpets to avoid warping.
    Sometimes I run a set of boards under the seam to maximize flatness. as I pull my vented seam weight down the line. Works great.
    The Seamer Down looks like a good tool, not for everyone, not a necessity.
    Using a smooth wheel roller is good too. I also use a star roller.

    Mohawk dsnt require seam sealer on regular carpet only on pattern or comercial or double stick carpet the iron will burn the seam sealer as soon as it goes threw it blending it with the glue the seam sealer works on regular comercial capets because they dont use seaming tape and those carpets are made of fibers that run threw the carpet in a line regular carpet has single fibers thats why when you pull on fibers on comercial they pull like a roll of yarn threw the carpet causing a line thats why they require seam sealer on seams because they are exposed to the edges comming up

    Question, I have 20 years experience and have noticed the price per yard to install has not come up very much from the time I started. Most guys are being paid $3-4 per yard in Utah to lay a normal cut pile. $.50 more for a pattern. Is anything being done out there to help our prices come up? Shit layers are becoming an epidemic to our industry and it is only getting worse. Especially with crap wage. Most installers struggle maintaining a nice truck for hell's sake. I worked into the $15 - 25 per yard range with wovens and high end pieces so in my niche I do not have to worry too much. But the struggle is real out there. decent layers are struggling to make ends meet because of crap wage. Is anything being done in training to help these qualified installers make more money? There needs to be a standard set for quality and decent wages.

      Close the borders and prices will start going back up. Sad fact. Here around New Orleans hardly no American Installers anymore. This change occurred over a 15 year period.

      Even at 4/yd to install, the people made out 100+/hr. Install new carpet, restretch out the padding, a few tack strips, no tearout or furniture moving.....
      That's more than most trades......
      Then there's REAL tile guys like myself, who do installs to specs and to standards who get barked at for a 3,000 shower when we'll spend a week in their house... im in the wrong trade, but damn if these folks in my trade absolutely suck and ruin my trade......

    Why do you turn the seamer down off and on? Why not just keep moving it along?

    • @kylelove927
      @kylelove927 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because there's a vacuum, it's easier and more ergonomic to move when it's powered down rather than forcing the seamer to move while it's sucking the floor.

    He doesn’t know y it’s white. one is a chemical bond which is the white n melts faster than the other which is mechanical bond the amber color which doesn’t melt as fast. Use for different carpets each type white for a tight backing or soft back the Amber is for carpets with bigger squares on the backing

    Great video. Great info. It's by the book standard. Have had many installers eat it and replace carpet simply due to no seam seal and no power stretch. When we come into inspect, repair or clean we work the claim 1st. It ain't right for some dumb shit to come in and slam it together non-standard and customer has to pay us to fix frayed obvious seams and carpet wrinkles. For you cheap azzed installers try a kool glide and kool glide seam sealer. Easy peezy but yeah you gotta spend some money just like you would for a power stretcher.

    some of your info is workable but your seaming techniqes on direction and placing carpet together was a bit sloppy.....I see gapping in the future of that method...I like the seam cooler but I'll stick with a weighed wood tray....and seaming has nothing to do with wrinkling..unless you waded it up while making the seam...you could use your kicker in a better way for positioning as you go down a long seam...but you need to face forward...hammering the carpet twords the other piece is a SLOOPY attempt at a flawless seam..... roll it back and actually observe the backings touching....then tractor it...better chance of not getting a callback...

      There are many ways of making a seam, everybody has their preferred method. Whatever gets the job done right!

  • @dominatriex
    @dominatriex 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Half the time? Or a Third of time off? Where does 'half the time' to do a job come from? And why do you have buddies who are installers who buy glue sticks from walmart? Was it a buddy or a friend of a friend? If he was your buddy I would imagine you would have already coached and sold him on the idea of installing properly.
    Practical question. You show seeming where you have no walls and all the space in the world in comparison to your carpet. When you come to a wall, how do you get the board out? Or do you do half the seam and then make sure it is cooled enough and then pull the carpet back in bulk and finish your seam? In theory in a vacuum the board under the seamer is so easy and apparently useful, but you don't even address the real world application of it. And I thought that was your whole purpose in this seminar. Instead you seam in a void. And don't even mention the issues that would occur.
    The most important part of the video was how a windmill tractor is needed on a seam, and you start talking about it the moment you become hard to hear. And 'getting used to it'? What are the decibels? I've been using the seem cooler for a few years and only recently I realized how damaging it must be to hearing. Anyone using it should wear hearing protection. I don't know why it isn't required for it to be marked on the tool, but it absolutely is loud enough and is endured long enough to cause permanent damage.

    Will you be ready when Jesus Christ returns? If not confess your sins and ask Jesus to come to you. Praise the Most High for his son acting as a sacrificial lamb, so that your sins can be forgiven (KJV Romans 5:6-11). Confess your sins to the Most High (KJV1 John 1:9) and Repent (KJV Acts 3:19) now while you have time before it's too late, Many people in this world will not see tomorrow(KJV Proverbs 27:1).
    To repent means you will not do any of the sins you've done in the past. You will be a renewed person. What is sin? Sin is a transgression of the laws of the Most High (KJV 1 John 3:4). Learning the Ten Commandments is a good start (KJV Exodus 20:1-17).
