Although Final Fantasy XIII had some questionable villains, with Final Fantasy XIII-2 they looked to address this oversight with the introduction of Caius Ballad to the series.
He was introduced as the eternal rival of Lightning, but his backstory is so much more complicated and compelling than just positioning him opposite Lightning. (Side note: Caius' Theme is also amazing!)
Throughout this video, which sees us tackle another antagonist in our Origins series, we'll look into Caius' relationships with Noel Kreiss and Paddra Nsu-Yeul, as well as Etro, Serah and Lightning. We'll also look at some of Caius' speeches! This will span both Final Fantasy 13-2 and Lightning Returns, although his main focus is within 13-2.

Caius is one of the most sympathetic villains ive seen. He just wanted to protect a girl, forced to see her die over and over without fully getting to know her.
His story makes me realize that immortality will ruin both ourselves and the relationships we have with others.
Theres actually a fragment that you can find that tells you a little more about his name.

@@manaxburn Funny you should mention LO. I think the Caius character was kind of a backhanded jab at sakaguchisan. Pretty sure he did not leave SE on the best terms and he does not have good relationships with most of the "new guard" at SE. Too bad.

Caius is conviction and determination personified.
"You're going to destroy all history just to save Yeul?" asks Serah with dread and disbelief in her voice
"Yes" answers Caius, with no hesitation whatsoever.
Personally, Yeul's motivations for her inability to 'just let Caius go' were so incredibly human and heartbreaking that it's no wonder Caius was pretty much an empty shell come LR.
He literally had *nobody* to blame and natually could *never* blame Yeul herself.
He said it himstlf, she's *'just a child, and children must be looked after.'*
Also it should be noted that Yeul's 'soul' from incarnation to incarnation is the same.
Only her 'heart' is different, hence why each successive Yeul retains memories of the past Yeuls(via their soul) while the individual differences come from each Yeul having a different 'heart'.
It's one rrason why no two Yeuls are 'the same', why the last Yeul could choose Noel, and ultimately why the conflicting desires of the being called Yeul becsme the very reason the world died.
It didn't help that each time she reincarnates with a new 'heart', a piece of her 'soul' gets stuck in Valhalla, fuses with the rest of the tens of thousands of other fragmented Yeuls... and then gets corrupted bc they have nowhere to go and ultimately are stuck in limbo with nothing but their unresolved and conflicting feelings and desires... with 99.99999999999999% of them centered squarely on Caius and Caius alone.

This is why you gotta love Ciaus. Such a respectful gentleman that will literally tear down the foundation of timeslef to protect you, while also protecting the new world!? What a way to anone for your sins for sure
Based on what I know of the FF series; Caius ranks amongst the few antagonists to actually be successful along with Kefka,Venat, and Ardyn. Caius's goal pretty much involved destroying the ENTIRE FFXIII UNIVERSE (with help from his unwitting allies, both the cast and Bhunivelze in their own ways) in order to save at least ONE Yeul from her cursed fate even though he cannot be free of it and put her into the care of the little brother he trusts. To me, he's not a villain but a cursed tragic dark hero.

These characters are still puppets of Buhnivelze as The cycle repeated itself.
Lightning did not defeat Buhnivelze, he manipulated her into returning him into his crystal stasis and he happily went back to sleep in The unseen realm. And lighting still became an incarnation of Ettro, becoming what Buhnivelze always intended her to be.
There was no evidence Velze died.
Caius is basically an archetype of Buhnivelze as lightning & Ettro.
Originally Ardyn would have received his prophecy/revelation from Buhnivelze and not Bahamut. Lightning aka Ettro would have been in ff15 manipulating the world.

I loved Caius and he is unabashedly my favorite villain. He's tragic, and overdramatic, and well acted and it hits all my favorite buttons. His story after reading the story of Yeul's made it even more poignant. The only reason why he abandoned the final Yeul is because a particularly bitter incarnation made him promise to let go of the final Yeul to let her live the life she wanted. This is why the final Yeul wasn't among the girls that desperately wanted to stay with Caius at the end, because she was attached to Noel instead.
Then him giving Noel the final Yeul was such a show of love and trust, I dunno. What a good character.
I think it’s hard to even call Caius a villain, he is a man on mission to end the suffering of yuel is how I have always seen it.
I don't get it. Everyone is writing Yeul improperly. Why?
Dude was single-handedly responsible for the state of the world in Lightning Returns, destroying time itself and causing countless deaths. He’s a tragic figure, but he was still a villain.

One of the most underrated Final Fantasy villains.
I enjoyed Caius! He's the best rival for Lightning! He just wanted to save Yeul. In Lightning Returns, when he accepted to let Yeul go, and towards the end when Noel & Yeul were finally together, I teared up a little, I'm not gonna lie. I hope Caius turns out to be one of the DLC characters in Dissidia NT, they really need to bring this character back! Great video you guys! Amazing job!

I do too. I love Sephiroth but Caius is definitely a favorite Antagonist of mine. I still cry playing XIII 2 and Lightning Returns. 😊

Y'know, the emergence of the archetype of the sympathetic antagonist is a fairly recent phenomenon in the Final Fantasy franchise. When I think back to Garland, the Emperor, Kefka, Zemus, Exdeath, Sephiroth, Ultimecia, Yu Yevon... these are villains generally characterized by overwhelming megalomania, an externally imposed source of anger, or a level of selfishness that far outstrips any average level. It's hard for the average player to relate or recreate a viable thought process that leads to their actions.
On the other hand, if you think of Kuja and his panicked reaction to his own impending demise, Vayne Solidor's grandiose ambition to wrest control of the world from the Occuria, or Ardyn's rage at what he's considered after trying to help people by absorbing daemons, these villains become much more relatable.
Sephiroths not crazy, he was just a good son that wanted to punish the world for tarnishing his mothers name...
... never mind, he was crazy.

Excellent summary!
Caius is another fantastic example of a well-written character who suffers from mental illness; something Final Fantasy is famous for covering well, especially within the Lightning Saga. Not only do you get to see why he acts the way that he does, but you can easily sympathize with his position, despite potentially disagreeing with him. His story is tragic but beautifully told, and as such, he's probably my favorite villain in any game ever. Thanks for covering him! I hope we get to see #CaiusForDissidia someday!

I would have never imagined it would be because he's not popular enough. I only watched FFXIII-2 LPs, but he's an amazing FF antagonist, probably the best next to Kefka. That's how you make interesting antagonists.
Caius is toi damn powerful, is literally unkillable, and has &zero* reason to bother fighting anyone.
And why is he so unpopular in Japan?

I'm not that huge a fan of XIII tbh, but more of a fan of the setting and characters.
I love Caius but you forgot to mention that he is like a father for her. In the book, you get the information that there is a stupid rule. As soon as Yeul can speak her first word she has to leaves her family. The reason for that, is that her family could manipulate her so that's why there is the rule that she must leave her family as soon as she speaks her first word. Image what this mean. The first word is maybe "mother", ",mum" or something like this and when do children normally speak they first word? At the age of 3? So Caius has to get her at the age of three, then he sees her growing up. It's totally normal that he get father feelings for her and then she dies at the age of maybe 15? After that it stated again. So he see many Yeuls growing up as a daughter for him just to see her die again and again without that he can do anything against it.
Noel doesn't have father feelings for her. He has more romantic feelings for her. No wonder because he is 18 and she is 15, at least the last Yeul was 15. So if Yeul gets older they two can become a couple but Yeul normally don't become so old. That means Yeul never married and she never gets children, all those things that normally girl get if they become to woman's. Caius released the last Yeul not only because it was an action of friendship it also was because he feels like he is Yeuls father an which father don't want to see his daughter beein happy? The last Yeul also has romantic feelings for Noel so its not difficult to see, that they two will become a couple.
I hope you understand what I mean because my english isn't really good.
The 13 series is one of my favorites in the whole series honestly.

For all her status of a god-like being, Etro had about as much forethought as a human. She really didn't think about the repercussions that giving a mortal man an immortal lifespan would cause.

Caius had such a huge story behind him and I'm so glad you made a video out of it because sometimes it's not that easy figure out through the game. Lightning is still my absolute favorite, but hearing about Caius makes me feel for the guy, even tho he defeated her!
He should definitely be in Dissidia NT as the villain for FF13. That would be perfect.

Caius ballad is the best antagonist in ff history in my opinion. And he is the exact reason that i love ffxiii 2 so much in trilogy. I felt so sad for him while i was playing ff13 2 . Too bad people gave up on ffxiii and didnt even try to finish this beatiful game.

Liam o brien has played many villains or hero turned villain or villain turned hero in many anime’s/video games and with that being said the voice acting is a very key part of what makes good character development. Half of what draws people into a video game is the story and game mechanics but the other half is the voice acting.

Caius is such an amazing villain. Definitely my favorite in the series! He has a really sympathetic story and reasoning for his actions, and he was able to manipulate everyone so that he would accomplish his goal no matter what!

7:09 I applaud this video. I always had an issue over Etro's foolishness. The Goddess placed her heart within Caius to ensure his immortality. However--she made herself vulnerable to death and could not stop him when he became evil. Did not try to take her heart back. Hence--everything that Bhunivelze created was in jeopardy of being destroyed. So when Noel Kreiss slew Caius in life; he helped usher in the beginning of the world's end. That 500 year countdown. Etro should not have ever given away her heart.
Y’know, after all that is seems like Etros was the true antagonist of the story.

Im not gonna lie I've been struggling with finishing 13 for about 4 years because of many issues I got with it. After hearing about this character I think I finally got the will to finish it. I loved the complexity of this character, it's the kind of origins I could read on for days and days and I can't believe he is been hiding from me for so long xD thank you for this!! Your channels surprises me as always
it wasn't that bad. Compared to other "time/dimensional" travel type stories (FE:Awakening gives me a migraine)

Low key, Final Fantasy XIII-2 was the best game in the franchise. The combat system drew me in, but the story was what made me fall in love.

There's also one final alternative timeline, where noel still refuses to kill cauis, however he impales himself on Noel's sword.
Caius and Yeul's story are the single best thing to come out of of FF XIII, and imo, FF et al.

Can we have Yuna next, her story is amazing and after playing the X series again I really do think she is meant to be the protagonist. She has been through so much, I felt like her story needs to be heard.

FFIV Kain Highwind, FFX Seymour, FFV Gilgamesh, VIII Laguna Loire, FFV Exdeath, FFV Bartz, FF1 Warriors of Light, FFVI Locke and FFXIV Bahamut the Dreadwyrm here is the ones I would like to see on this series
Wasn't FFXIV Bahamut the Dreadwyrm a primal that people summoned years ago, but they sealed it inside the Moon of Dalamud to try to stop it temporarily. Then the seal broke and we get the Calamity and you know the rest. Although I am not sure who originally summoned Bahamut though, so I see your point.
It’s was the dragons of Meracydia that summoned him back as a primal and with Bahamut being powerful the Allagan Empire developed Omega to fight the primal and Omega defeated him. After defeating Bahamut the Allagan Empire sealed him in Dalamud and they want to use as a energy source and to keep him sealed they capture the dragons of Meracydia.
I hope they add him in Dissidia NT

Damn it Etro, your act of compassion basically destroyed a man. And was practically the world's most abysmal suicide note, especially since sticking her own heart in his body caused her death like I said it was a slow burn suicide.

Even though i dont know if I will call him that seeing as he would destroy the foundation of history itself to save a girl he didnt want to see die over and over. His story was so beautiful and tragic at the same time. I feel like i can put him in the same catagory as Madara

Yes!!! Exactly! Had it not been for Caius's meddling with the timeline, the cast would've never gone to the New!World, without Bhunivelze.
Also, he took Lightning's role of the god of death. Had he not taken the role, Lightning would also be unable to live her life normally.
My fave FF antagonist. Love his so much. Would love to see more of him somehow.

Caius Ballad is probably the best antagonist of the entire FF franchise. He has a great VA and wonderful music themes as well. My absolute favorite.
One of the great things about FFXIII-2 is the slundtrack. Yeul's theme is beautifully sung but if you pay attention to the lyrics, the song has very strong ties to Caius' character and motivations.

Caius was definitely a good antagonist, but I am just not understanding what was wrong with Dysley/Barthandalos. I mean I did not like them at all and got stuck fighting them because I was fairly new to rpgs and ff in general at the time, but I mean he was a villain that I could not stand, so he had to have done something right. There are different kinds of antaganists, I know I just don't see how Dysley was "flat."
I guess he just means that Barthandelus was just not over-interesting.

I have lots to say on this iteration of FF, but for now I just want to say how much I loved the look of the crystarium growth system. It’s no sphere grid, but damn it was pretty. I want something aesthetically pleasing for our next frowth system in XVI!!

Caius made XIII-2 sooo good. For all the hate XIII gets, some of it is out of proportion and XIII-2 is an improvement in so many ways. Had goosebumps everytime he was on screen.

For me, Noel was wrong about Yeul, even she couldn't come back again and again to see Caius since every Yeul was a different soul, a different person if you will. and this is proven by the hundreds of Yeul within the chaos.
he's the villain who succeded in his plans, the one villain who actually acomplished his goals and even went further beyond and becoming some sort of savior in the new world.

Caius deserves to be in the discussion for not only great final fantasy villains, but for great villains in general.
My favorite ff villain is golbez, but caius is definitely top 5. 13-2 and 13 as a whole is underappreciated. Sure 13 wasn't great, but it still wasn't bad. I enjoy them more than I've enjoyed 15 that's for sure.
I have 5 characters known collectively as the World Masters who existed in my stories since 2008. When I started looking into the characters of 13-2 and Caius in particular, I was hit with the realization that he not only outdid Kekfa in the extent of the damage he caused but he's the best example I've seen of what the Masters would become if I hadn't put protections in place. Like Caius, the Masters serve as near-immortal creatures whose primary mission is to oversee their planet at the behest of the deity who created them. They keep order while allowing the various Animal Kingdoms and the Human Empire to rule themselves, stepping in only if necessary. Their service has been ongoing for the past 6,000 years and will end when the unknowable lifespan of the universe ends. Their primary protection against the insanity Caius suffered is the fact they are not human. Being beasts makes them better able to handle the emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental toll that immortality brings but they do suffer from dark periods and their atrociously long lives leave their hearts on the verge of total collapse. They would never dream of offing themselves because their connection to the world is so intimate that killing them equals either a localized apocalypse if one dies or the premature end of the world in its entirety if they all do. Caius means a lot to me because without him, I probably never would've given as much thought to the Masters' potential to suffer the level of despair he suffers. He forced me to understand what sort of path I set them on. I owe him for that.

I know you do Final Fantasy origins, buuut, would you consider other game origins videos? Like characters from Kingdom Hearts? Since Final Fantasy is involved in Kingdom Hearts, I thought maybe KH characters could be covered? Just a thought !

For me Caius is an antagonist just like kuja, and he is the salvation of FFXIII-2. But I still have the opinion that Noel, Yuel and Caius should be the protagonists of a hypothetical FFXIII where fábula nova crystallis, lighting and others doesn’t exist in order to have a way better FFXIII
