Rinoa Heartilly served as the deuteragonist and main love interest in Final Fantasy VIII, but he role within the story was much more than that.
Having been the daughter of General Fury Caraway and Julia Heartilly, Rinoa had a complicated past that led to her carrying a lot of emotional trauma. Her development throughout Final Fantasy 8 showed how she started to overcome this, despite being the outsider. Even though her initial focus was Seifer, this shifted to Squall after Rinoa learnt to understand more about the man that was kept locked away.

With Final Fantasy 8 Remastered releasing not too long ago, it felt like the perfect time to dive back into the lore of Final Fantasy 8 as we've only done Squall so far from that game! Hopefully you guys enjoy learning more about her character!

I’m always going to be connected to Rinoa. My dad was such a big fan of ffviii when it first came out, and he loved the character of Rinoa, so he named me after her. I thought my name was just weird before, but after I played the game I realized how lucky I was to be named after her 😊

Rinoa and Squall represent love a generation too late. Laguna and Julia didn't get together, but Laguna's son, and Julia's daughter do ;)
Laguna was one of the main characters tho. The core story isn't stopping the sorceresses, that's just busy work thrown in because final fantasy. The story of FFVIII is a tale of 2 lovers (Laguna and Julia) being separated by the world's events, eventually marrying other people and having children, and then those children finding each other and living out the love their parents couldn't.

But Lagunas love w Julia is one of lust. While Laguna love w Raine was genuine and more deeper
I didn't realize it till later on but I loved how Squall and Riona's love is actually the fulfillment of both their parents' love that never had the chance to blossom. Laguna and Julia had a moment where if things had played out differently, they could have been something beautiful, but it never came to be. However, they found love with others and both produced a child with them, and those children would go on to form a relationship that in a way would in a way complete what Laguna and Julia never could have.
I know you said rinoa was squall's polar opposite but I feel more like rinoa and squall had that similar feel of isolation but they both had different outcomes like tidus and yuna basically living in the shadows of their fathers if that makes sense

I think they definitely had SOME polar opposite traits. He was obviously aloof and uptight, while she was outgoing and carefree. But I agree with where you're coming from. In the important ways, they were very much alike
@James Gravil i wouldn't call Zell an extrovert. His hyperactive nature is just a facade. He's not a conversation starter and he's always repressing his impressions towards other people and Squall is always there to 'listen' to him, venting out his thoughts. Selphie, on the other hand, is the quirky, spontaneous, conversation starter, better candidate for the opposite of overthinker, calculated, silent Squall. Rinoa just happened to be a better pair for Squall because she pushed him to his limits while Selphie was the one who adjusted for Squall's behavior. But yeah, in general, Seifer is his opposite.
They had similar struggles in various different lighting.
Squall felt isolated and alone. Grown as an orphan and staunchly attached to Ellone; when she was forced to flee. Squall felt abandoned and isolated. Withdrawing his emotions and refusing to connect to others in the fear he'd be abandoned once more. Blaming himself that people didn't want him. He'd rather keep everyone away to save him the pain of implied complete rejection of himself.
Rinoa felt isolated and alone due to the loss of her mother and rift between herself and her father. Her sheltered life gave way to a harsh reality that continued to pull various punches. Reminding her of how small she really was, how ignorant she was to others around her. And how her pampered life had hid away an aspect she desperately needed in her life. Rather than withdrawing from the world; Rinoa tries to find and create bonds that make her feel safe and wanted. But it wasn't until she met Squall's crew did she ever have a feeling of belonging and security in herself.
They are pure opposites one being a stoic on the level of Aurelius and the other being an eternal optimist often seeing the world the way they wish it to be and not as it is (ie. thinking you can just slip a bangle on the sorceress)
While everyone mostly started off with FFVII, I started with FFVIII and so this is my favorite and still is. It's beautiful and I still wish for the remake even though I found out that not many liked it because it's completely off the usual story FF series goes for. This is special for me. Thanks for introducing Rinoa to everyone. I think this video is well done and was narrated well. :)

I couldn't agree more. 8 was also my first FF as well. I hate that it gets treated like the ugly step child when it was just as much of a hit as 7 and 9.
I csnt believe that ff7bhas gotten like 10 extra installments in its story when they could easily do either a prequel game or a movie about the sorceress wars

Rinoa is so underrated and so under appareciated. It really makes me sad that people just don't like her. When she went through so much, to get to the mature state that she is now. The pain, the loss, the isolation, all these bad emotions and feelings, yet she still managed to over come them to be a better person. She is my favorite FF character and possibly in general. She is the strongest character I know. Love her so much! Thank you for doing this in her honor! ♥♥

I understand what you mean about Rinoa. I like her as a character, she grew a lot from how she acted near the end of disc 1. I have recently gotten newfound respect for her, she's getting close to the best female characters, in my opinion

Would love to see an origin story on Laguna, his story is a bit fragmented in the game and it would be great to have it all layed out. Especially since his character details offer unique insight in the game like Seifer copying his gunblade techniques from the sorceress movie, how he became a hero to the Shumi tribe, his relationship with Squall and Ellone, etc.

I think VIII probably has my favorite narrative out of the series, or at least character development. The growth that Squall and Rinoa go through is really charming, and Eyes On Me might be my favorite love song ever.

Fan theory: Am I the only one who thinks Caraway sent Laguna and co. to Esthar just to get rid of him to get to Julia!? Kiros even says that it was an order from the general! It can't be a coincidence that after Laguna was declared MIA/KIA that he inevitably swooped in and married her. Granted his jealousy and manipulation did give way to one of the best FF couples in the franchise I still find it to be very sad for both Laguna and Julia who had each naturally started to fall for each other without saying a word to the other.
Caraway is a low key bad guy in this story. 'Nough said.

At that point, Caraway was still not a General, he was another soldier like Laguna but as a member of wealthy family he was station in Deling City. Laguna was order to be shipped to Esthar by another guy, the crazy fan of Julia.

13:00 Irvine didn't "convince" Squall to rescue Rinoa, they just couldn't do anything to help her until the gates to the Presidential estate opened up.
They also needed to go to where Rinoa was being attacked anyway. Not much convincing is gonna be needed if one of Squall's clients is getting killed right in front of him.
i really love the fan theory about ultimecia is another rinoa from alternatives timeline where she want to change the fact that squall is killed by edea ice lance that day. it's improve the quality of the story dramatically. many prove supporting that theory too, like ultimecia castle is actually placed in the flower garden where she and squall promised to meet, her summon guardian force is Greiver, which is squall's ring. and in dissidia version when she about to fight squall she says "shall we dance?" implying her first memory of meeting squall. and lastly if you check ultimecia's weapon name is shooting stars, which the exact same name with rinoa's weapon.
Yeah, that was a brilliant theory. It's so weird that the creators apparently didn't mean it, yet there were so many coincidences. These were epic stories.

Amazing coverage of the events. I would just maybe add one thing - Ragnarok wasn't a random spaceship. Ragnaroks (three of them if I remember) actually carried Adel's Tomb to the space, so it makes exact sense why it would be there. I don't remember though why did they lost contact with Eshtar.

Please do Kuja, he’s such an enigmatic villain and probably the only one amongst the series who ever truly regret his actions at the end of the game. Love his backstory too about the fear of death
Loved this video. I always felt sorry for Rinoa when the SeeDs kind of dismissed her as a 'poor little rich girl'. She has seen genuine tragedy and, whilst the fight for Timber might have begun as spiting her father, I do think she really cares for the town and the Forest Owls.
Could you do Edea, next? Who she is and how she got her powers is sooo complicated!

I have a theory that the Guardian Forces were actual people before they became the summons, i think this due to the ring Squall names matching the GF that Ultamecia uses at the games final battle sequnces.

Fantastic summary! FF8 is always a memorable FF for me, and though it's not without its flaws, it definitely helped shaped me at the time, especially with regard to its amazing musical numbers. I really like how you fleshed out Rinoa and Squall's relationship (of course!), but I've always wondered why people couldn't really believe their emotional connection for each other. But the way you presented it here is exactly how I understood their relationship developing (with Squall responding to Rinoa's love first).

Best girl, I love Rinoa. Every time I replay this game I learn something new about the characters, and this video taught me even more about my favorite ff female protagonist. What I love most about Squall and Rinoa is how much they really needed each other to grow as people. Other ff couples do this as well but I think FF8 does it best

After playing FF8 countless times, there's 2 things that I really dont understand: What are they talking about during the orphanage flower field event, and what actually happened in the ending, the whole time compression thing.
TheGreator the orphanage thing is about showing that all (but Rinoa) party members had a past. Those memories were forgotten due to using Gaurdian forces. Some party members feel it was a big price to pay, but squall says it’s worth it to win. Even if it means forgetting precious memories.
The ending is a happy moment before Ultemecia is Born (Seed having to fight again and a grim future) Squall made a promise to always be at Rinoas side no matter if she becomes the enemy of the world. In the flashes by squall being lost in the void, there are scenes mixing Rinoas death or Rinoa showing some resemblance to Ultemecia. Squall can’t react because he loves/cares for Rinoa.
Even when Squall meets up Edea to see the sorceress pass her power. Edea willingly repeats the cycle/loop. Squall gets lost for he knows even with killing Ultemecia in the future, she will still be born again.
Rinoa brings back Squall, and I can only guess Squall and the party forgets the Sorcerers for they use Gaurdian Forces.
Thus, Ultemecia is born later, and the loop continues.
That’s what I interpreted from FF8
I would love to see Sabin and Edgars story. As their story while short are rather intresting.
Balancing duty and freedom. And how the empire ruin their childhood and even more so. Their ways to support the returners as they spied withon the empire.

Rinoa was always one of my overall favourite characters in the entire franchise. Her dynamic with Squall was really something else. I really liked the story of FF8, but the magic system really sacks the game's replayability.

You can get Degenerator in less than an hour on FF8 and just wreck 90% of the enemies you encounter. That alone is a game breaker. And Quistis is just absolutely lovely on all fronts.

These origin stories are always so well put together and tell me so many things I missed.
I've played a lot of these games multiple times, and for some of them I've delved deep into learning more about the stories etc.
But you always manage to bring so much new info to me :)
Please cover the birth, growth, and end of the Soldier project. Include Genesis, Angeal, Sephiroth, Soldier 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks, the Nibleheim Incident and the experiments done thereafter and last but not least, go in depth on Deepground.
I love this game so much, so I appreciate the work you've done in this video.
Final Fantasy VIII had a lot of speculative hints hidden within its story, but I liked that. It left me guessing, and I could think outside of the box.
As many times as I played ff8 the time that rinoa and squall share in the cockpit of Ragnarok always gets to me the vulnerability she shows just always seems to hit home.

I really love this design of Rinoa over the Final Fantasy Dissidia NT design of her... This one is much more... Cute... Really beautiful.
That is why I fall in love with her when I was 12.
One thing that changed over the years was her jet black eyes. This was removed after the original. Even in the remaster that's no longer a thing. I think that was a signature characteristic (like Tifa's red irises), and I don't know why it went away

Good video, makes me appreciate Rinoa more because even though I enjoy her character I have mixed views on how they portrayed it. Mainly how many times I have to rescue her which became quite tiring, not from her fault but the writer's choices.

kid kytes I like what you said about the writers’ choices. Some people don’t realise that and would be quick to dismiss an otherwise complex character.
The writers in this instance had something good in their hands and instead went with something trite and repetitive within the same game. This is coming from someone who loves weak characters and those who show fragility, where being rescued does have justification. But being rescued 4 or so times where one instance happened because she was literally standing on a spot where the ground collapsed beneath her feet is lazy writing.

This is a great video. Firstly I never understood the hate for FFVIII sure the drawing of magic is a drag and the levelling is whack but at least remastered added a high speed function. The storyline and characters make this one of my favourites and Squall and Rinoa are two of my favourites. The way she gradually breaks down his barriers is really moving. (By the way your Squall vid was equally awesome and very insightful) both these characters are incredibly complex which is precisely why they found love...I dont agree with those comments who said their love story was unbelievable and random. It makes perfect sense as an outgoing and bubbly character like Rinoa who is passionate and caring is the only kind who could break down Squall's resolve and careful walls he had built to protect himself. What a lovely pairing. I much prefer the Squall type characters to the loud, in your face personality of Tidus or Zell (much alike at the start of FFX)
Another reason I love your videos is they teach me correct pronunciation of names and places. I always thought it was See-Dee and Dell-ing City. Obviously I cant reas.
(I also always wondered why I had a weird crush on pixel squall....makes more sense now I know he was based on River Phoenix. One of my favourite actors).

I really enjoyed the video and the idea that rinoa and squalls' romance is also a fitting end to laguna and Julia's as well. Almost like the romance was passed down from father to son and mother to daughter.
This was a wonderful Origins story... You've made sense out of this story by diving deep into its lore. You have a great sounding reading voice and should consider doing audible type book readings.

Even though I have beaten this 5 times it still takes me a while to grasp the story, still your never forget your first love and my game girl will always be Rinoa.

I finished this game multiple times as a teener, but man, i totally forgot about this story of Rinoa. I think i need to refresh my memory after more than 15 years. Wow. Thanks for this nice story. :)

Didn't care for Rinoa but I found her complexity intriguing. In Squall's shoes, I'd have gotten with any of the other girls. Your coverage made her much more sympathetic too. Good work!
Commented 3 years late. FF8 is the best RPG gem of the PS1 generation, when you count magic, refining, cards, mini games, gf relationships, gf abilities, tank heal dps options in the junction menu plus att def, status att and def it was leagues and leagues ahead of any game of it's time. Still IMHO the best FF, it was the truest RPG.
i have a hard time picking my favorite between rinoa and squall. i really enjoyed this video i hope to see more from this one in particular! :)
