You don't see how it will help him in sports? Not just that, but what about what he'll do *off* the field. Remember, he may or may not do it in college and/or the NFL. This is all up to him.
It was so hard for me back in the late 60's. No social media. No computers. and coming out was a way to be avoided by most people. You kids are luckier today. Jake is another story because he was an all american. what courage.

Because even though there has been great progress for the LGBTQ community on so many fronts, we still have a long way to. Coming out is a declaration of ownership of one's authenticity and reality. It is still necessary today.

Tarek, the others hit it on the nose. Remember Michael Sam a few years ago? He was the first NFL player to come out, even if he didn't play all that much. And he's paving the way for *future* players to do so, such as this guy.
at this point in time, how is it newsworthy? no one really cares, and if they do, they need to reevaluate what they deem as important.
Indiana State has picked up a talented young guy who will do great things for their football program. I wish him all the best in his future and know he will well.

This is truly great, and I congratulate him for his courage and for the role model he is giving to the world.
Best wishes to Jake, he's the kid who lives in everybody's neighborhood who has grown up to be a real man of character, standing tall for his identity despite what any else might think. Hopefully, sometime soon his story will become a non-issue because as a society, we will finally look at how a person lives their life rather than who they may love.

I played high school football a few years before this young man and I would've NEVER had the courage to do what he did. It's an incredible feeling being out and proud, so I'm happy he can experience it at such a young age.

He's a very brave soul. Just Goes to show we are in all walks of life. Coming out even in 2019 is still a very difficult thing to do. I came out 2yrs ago in 2017. Most ppl I know are okay with it. Yet I'm still into my Radios, computers, electronics. I hope to get amateur radio license one day. I wish him luck and success in his endeavors as a football Player or whatever his dreams may be.

I can't believe that people are bashing him in these comments. I have been fighting this battle for over 50 years and genuinely thought that we had made it past this homophobic crap. Very disappointed that this brave young man has to waste his energy to be himself and win games at the same time. He plays team sports. But the homophobes don't include him when they say "we won" from the stands. They are not fit to clean the dirt off his shoes.
