i can't do to much these days knees are shot back is knackered after doing it for over 35 years so know i do little bits love the vids i dont miss the muddy days keep on laying and when you step back and say i did that with pride
Did a little side job over the weekend and started doing your double butter technique. Way less pointing to do when I struck my joints. Thanks for slowing the videos down once in a while so fellers like me can see the mechanics
Love watching these just getting going just started on the trowel full time love the job loads working in Northwich watching you really help me pick up little tips thanks stu
What an interesting video Stu! Wonderful - almost a little documentary. I hope they can see it in 100 years - wonder what houses will be like by then..!
You look like you are having lots of fun. Tradies definitely have the life so it seems. I admire your work. Hoping to make the transition from office to trade.
You do have days where you love it but you’ll go home hurting everyday and battling all weathers. Not for the feint hearted. But when you finish you do get a sense of pride. Saying that I couldn’t work in an office. Maybe should have studied harder! Props to you for that.
to be fair mate i really enjoyed today, not laughed as much for a long lime but its been a very hard week, im not use to proper graft like that, suppose it will do me good :)
Interesting to see different types of foundations by comparing the ones in North America. Great work Stu. Got to work hard to earn our bread and butter. Don’t forget to bend your knees...those blocks look pretty heavy.😬👍👍
How do you make sure the first course of trench blocks are level? Are you relying on the foundation to be set level or do you break out the laser level each time? Thanks. Great vids.
9" thermalite have got 'handles' these days then! I still wake up sweating remembering laying 9" 7Kn solid concrete 'bolster busters' on a price, rubbed up both sides!!!
Those large concrete blocks that are used for the first course or two, are those fairly new? I've never seen or laid those! I like the handles. They look a little bit like thermalite but I presume they are concrete? wouldn't want thermalite below ground one wouldn't have thought! Very nice work and thank you for sharing!
There thermalite trench blocks 300mm wide by 215mm deep by 440mm long....used them for many yrs now there much easier than 2 separate skins. Once laid your external skin and internal leaf and cavity are set out!!
@@TheTraditionalGolfer Ah ok, interesting! Many thanks for your reply! I was always taught that thermalite blocks shouldn't be used underground, but obviously people do and must be fine! I like how high they went with the footing! We used to go down to whatever the depth had to be and then put 8 to 12 inches of concrete in and then brick up to the surface!
@@markanthony7184 surprisingly enough there actually better below ground because there high density so alot less likely to be effected by frost....and they have a good load rating 7.3nm as opposed to a standard 3.5nm breeze block there great for footings i won't use anything else but it's amazing how many bricklayers haven't come across them!!! Once you get corners up you can soon thrash a big footing in with them.
@@markanthony7184 yes mate things have moved on now you trench fill now as much as possible... as long as your 9 inch down minimum from ground level for frost protection....so the norm is usually 450 down from dpc so that leaves 1 course of trench and 3 course of splash or 675 down so 2 course of trench and 3 course of splash....
Hi Stu - Just wondered what the name of the song from the epidemicsound library this is at about 1 minute in.... I'm a big fan of the tunes your placing in the background of the vids, gives a real nice flow to the footage when your laying. Few others have asked too.... Thanks
When u start an bricklaying job/apprenticeship should u take your own equipment or will they give u equipment to start with and then get your own stuff
You will only need your own equipment when you come out of collage if it’s your first day of your apprenticeship on site most likely you will be labouring until you get called to collage
What a top brickie you are, not hassling groundworkers to roll the red carpet out and spend hour or so getting rid of water for it to fill up next day. Top man
Are you using profiles too set your corners out ? Just curious we use corner profiles then string across then transfer line down too the concrete pad ? Or is the footing you work on made wider? Then you measure of plans for width and length or building ? Cheers
Never too old Dirk but just know you have to serve a minimum 2 years to get your Nvq then a first 2 years as a labourer and experience then another year to pick up speed on the trowel. It’s not as simple as leave college and become a Bricky
Hi Dirk and stu I’m the same age with similar intent. Just worried about the apprentice wage as i have a son. How good/bad is the wage compared to minimum wage? It’s the only barrier I’m facing right now
Apprenticeship at 31, don't bother Dirk just start as a labourer go to night school doing your brickwork and pick it up as you go, you can always start on the agencies and get some reasonable money
Fair play. I only do one off builds and extensions so am governed by local authority building control. After watching this vid I can honestly say I don’t miss site work 😬😬I hope it’s all back filled and tidy for the brickies when they start from damp. Roll on spring !!! 👍👍
Ok. Good work ethic. I have been a bricklayer for over 40 years and we do things different and that's fine but if you would like to see my 85 year old dad embarrasse both of us let me know. 😊
If you would have told me when I was 12 that I would be spending a considerable amount of time watching videos on the internet of people laying bricks in a different country I would have called you crazy. Then again, once when I was 12 I jumped onto a moving train and rode it halfway across town so, tit for tat and all that. Great video :D
stu u lads r the backbone of British industry, can't beat the workers, especially top quality tradesmen.
Cheers Gary mate
There's something really relaxing about doing this all day then chilling on the pc watching this lol
i can't do to much these days knees are shot back is knackered after doing it for over 35 years so know i do little bits love the vids i dont miss the muddy days keep on laying and when you step back and say i did that with pride
Hi, how was the pay when you were bricklaying?
random name it’s shite pay in winter
@@tsplays7234 is it actually I am considering applying for a bricklaying apprenticeship
Is it good money?
10:15 gonna need subtitles for that one boys! top job.

What an interesting video Stu! Wonderful - almost a little documentary. I hope they can see it in 100 years - wonder what houses will be like by then..!
Great video Stu looks like you’re having a good time having a laugh with the boys
We had a great laugh this week dad. Took our minds of the hard work
Nice video as always a lot of people don’t realize how hard this job is keep up the great work n videos
Yes the don’t mate, it’s not all fancy steps and walls
Look on the bright side Stu , at least it's not snowing.......😀
Nice work as per usual.....👍
Cheers
Great insight Stu, thanks for putting this one together. :-)
As much as i loved this job I watched your videos every day .
You look like you are having lots of fun. Tradies definitely have the life so it seems. I admire your work. Hoping to make the transition from office to trade.
Don’t lol is my opinion but I wish you the best in whatever you do bro
You do have days where you love it but you’ll go home hurting everyday and battling all weathers. Not for the feint hearted. But when you finish you do get a sense of pride. Saying that I couldn’t work in an office. Maybe should have studied harder! Props to you for that.
Top job Stu, you make it look so easy, no foot for yet I hope !!🤗😎😋😆
Proper graft there stu lad! Couldn’t help notice the yellow marshal tubs, brings back memory’s 😄
The movement is beautiful
Great stuff i always love the atmosphere of being on site with all the banter and stuff.
to be fair mate i really enjoyed today, not laughed as much for a long lime but its been a very hard week, im not use to proper graft like that, suppose it will do me good :)
You make it look easy pal
good video brother mason, greetings from Argentina !
Can't wait to get back on the footings, you must be rolling deep in the 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰lol
"Challenging"conditions to work in.Amazing big bosses build their wealth on such acceptance.
STU, the blocks are very heavy ,how do you lift them ? Why would you do that ?))))
Smashed it again Stu, fantastic vid
я думал, что только мы в грязи и воде строим дома. Хорошо кладете кирпич. Удачи вам и вашему каналу!!!
спасибо, приятель, много гадости здесь тоже лол
Should be revising but here I am.

Yes I make sure my knees are bent and back straight when I’m laying those block there’s no other way. They’re 16kg lol
realy enjoy watching you vedio time to time thanks mate
Looking good mate
What are these buildings gonna be ? They all seem to have the same foot print
Starting this as an apprenticeship in two days. I'm 15 lol. But yo, work starts here

How is it going mate?
Keep up the good work stu 👌
you know it jacko
Iv been in the exact same conditions this week m8 water up to my shins nightmare
Hi Stu. Them footing are wide. Trench block and inner skin of 4" block.
Might have a plinth course round the house above or a 150mm cavity......I'm doing 3 houses on a site at the minute all with 150 wide cavity's
Nice full perps there lad. Quality work.
Love the music
Ahhh life in the footings I know it all too well
Site work hasn't been fun for years , slashing for the cheapest subby who got the decimal point in the wrong place on the quote .True !
How come you only do a couple of course, why not more?
How do you make sure the first course of trench blocks are level? Are you relying on the foundation to be set level or do you break out the laser level each time? Thanks. Great vids.
yeah way you set out with laser level i think you can see briefly in the video, then we mark each corner how much it needs picking
nice fast work
but why they use light blocks there or it has to do with the weight of the house construction?????
I like this work
9" thermalite have got 'handles' these days then! I still wake up sweating remembering laying 9" 7Kn solid concrete 'bolster busters' on a price, rubbed up both sides!!!
Your going to have to use a popcan to joint that. looks like a 8 guage.
How do you get into bricklaying? And what’s a average Salary in this field?
Apprenticeship is a good way to go , and probably depends on where you work and who for could be from 30-40k
Or as low as 20 for a beginner

Awesome video as per usual mate
I’m surprised there’s no silos for gobbo and you have to mix it yourself….but harsh on the form you work with like
Love the vids mate, never stop please, dropped a like for ya
Thanks mate
Quality stuff 👍🏻
Brickies should be the highest paid onsite for sure considering how hard they work

Great vids, keep them coming. What’s your playlist Stu?
Cheers Peter what do you mean what’s your playlist? Think I have one how to lay bricks just check the channel
Stu, your music playlist.
Are red bricks mainly just for cosmetic purposes? Like wouldn’t it be quicker using breeze blocks?
Stu. Why do you build corners from profiles instead of running in. Interested. Is it faster?
So that the corner works I perfect with the other, it’s very easy to kink in when building a corner so far away from the other
On a separate note, what are you getting for trench down there?
Nice work man! Love the videos.
Terrible working conditions ! Fair play 👍🏻good work yet again
You are good work
Loving the vids mate
Great vids lads
I just left a factory to do a bricklaying apprenticeship and I'm 31. I'm not told to learn it all am I?

Why do you put joints on the thermalite block, thought they are meant to inter lock together?
I asked the same question Darren but it’s an nhbc requirement 🤷♂️
Ah I see, work with them a lot and and just inter lock them and fill in the top. Very fast process. Tidy work though 👍 enjoy your videos
I wouldnt pay the nhbc in washers they are a waste of space
What do you prefer; being on site or doing your own jobs?
they both have their perks to be fair mate,we had a good laugh today but its been a hard week
Love your vids stu 👍
cheers Paul mate
When are the bloopers being shown? Or are they too blue for you tube 👍😂...great videos... miss being on the tools...
They are too blue for TH-cam maybe I will put them on my Instagram 😁
Why do you put perps on interlocking foundation blocks ?? Dry joint and fill the whole at the top 👌👌
its a NHBC requirement mate, i did ask about that.
Fair play. I only do one off builds and extensions so am governed by local authority building control. After watching this vid I can honestly say I don’t miss site work 😬😬I hope it’s all back filled and tidy for the brickies when they start from damp. Roll on spring !!! 👍👍
