Do We Take Video Game Companions For Granted? - GreedFall PS4 Gameplay

  • Look, I'm sorry (not sorry), but after playing a chunk of #GreedFall, we think we might all be taking our companions for granted. After one companion betrayed us instead of merely leaving her party, Zoe has made a video about how companions in video games like the Fallout games, and Skyrim - to name a few - get the short end of the stick, yet somehow we're still shocked when they dare to do something to harm us, even after being by our side for most of the game.
Filled with GreedFall gameplay, this video might even get you in the mood to play Spiders' latest RPG - or, at the very least, be kinder to your companions. Hopefully.

I wouldn't mind an RPG where you're forced to build up relationships with a group of people who then decide they're going to sacrifice you for whatever reason about halfway through the plot. If your companions could gang up against you, that could make for a really interesting twist that I don't think has ever been done. Also, I've always preferred playing solo & it'd be nice to flip a party based friendship-building RPG into a solo vengeance affair.

I remember in my first time playing Dragon Age: Origins I asked Morrigan if we were friends and some how insulted her to point of like -7 or 8 points. The idea of sending companions on missions makes me think of the war table in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Something like that then debriefing with the companion about the mission would be a rather interesting game mechanic. As well as tying it into something along the lines of the Mass Effect loyalty missions would be really fun to explore.

Really appreciated this video, Zoe! What you've described as happening in GreedFall, reminds me of Blackwall in Dragon Age: Inquisition. I loved that BioWare had the balls to make an, on-the-surface, honourable character harbour such a secret that completely shifted the way you thought about them. More moments like that, and what you've described, can only be to the betterment of the medium's quality of narrative and character.

If Greedfall only had a combat system as brilliant as KoA, while leaving everything else the same, it would have been an absolutely perfect game. Even with its current *meh* combat, it’s already a very good game. I liked KoA very much, but I think it had *way* too many inconsequential quests that didn’t add to the story. Still, I’ve never found a combat system as easily customizable-and as fun-as KoA had. A shame that the IP is trapped in limbo; I felt like a second game in the series might have trimmed some of the fat and achieved greater success. I hope Greedfall gets an opportunity to improve upon the first game and continue in this fascinating world they’ve built!

You are a legate an ambassador for the Congregation of Merchants, already is a giveaway that you are the neutral faction and tend to be more reasonable, steps ahead as a merchant connections is what helps your faction. Do you like Dragon Age? This game is basically Dragon Age set in an early modern age world. Is not open world, but has large hubs to explore.
The plot is rather good, at least where I'm at the moment. Graphics are good if with some hiccup and woody animations, characters and companions are well developed BUT unfortunately I have the impression they join your party for no particular reason, so it's hard empathizing with them at the beginning (aside from Kurt, that's also the best written of the bunch). Character customization is also good and you can micromanage your party, and I find that aspect of the game oddly satisfying.
Combat and the overall ruleset of the game are mediocre at best; even at higher difficulties I found it rather easy, and sometimes you are hindered in movement by the rules in situations that don't make sense. For example you cannot jump from a ledge to the other if you don't have enought Athletics, but in reality that gap is not even a meter wide! The game has a habit of ruining my suspension of disbelief.
On the other hand I also consider Greedfall one of those games where plot and storytelling are hugely more important than gameplay. Still, it can be annoying at times.

I did feel quite guilty that i kept Lydia purely as a pack horse...but then it was never going to be for her sparkling wit and stunning personality, was it? I tried to make it up to her by giving her the best/fanciest/priciest armour and weapons possible (she got the best heavy armour, i was in the light armour), but maybe i only did this because i was fed up of her dying and having to reload the game all the time? I never dumped her in favour of later house carls, but they seemed similarly lacking in personality, plus i was used to her by then. I fear i might be a terrible protagonist!
Knowing that they could double cross me as easily as i could to them (i wouldn't on purpose!) could be a really good addition to rpgs going forward, but jeez it's going to make them stressful!

Probably the only game where I would NOT suggest that this is possible/able to take your companions for granted. Simple cause your Talent points cant be maxed if you spread the equally and you need their friendship to get the extra mile and get that bonus you need for maxing them. Some characters are therefore more useful then others, cause their Talent bonus can be worn all the time as gear example cape - one attribute dedicated gear to Charisma only, compared to Chest Armor that can give you 3 different and you will often use both while rooming the world lockpick/vigor.
the Since is only needed occasionally when crafting/recycling/ some dialog/observation(super rare).
What I missed in this game, was not able to exclude companions. There need to be always 2 in your party. You cant control where they stay, how they fight, what priority target is. Its BAD looking from this perspective. I was surprised to see that the romance was actually just one companion in the room with me instead of always two.
The worst part is your companions always shouting at you drink a potion, if you use Magic. For real? F_U, who made you my tutor throughout the game. I tried to shut the silent within audio options, but nothing there. Who made this call. And how are you levels ahead of me, lower attributes that I can't adjust and have double the stats values then me? How is that possible?
Not to mention, starting choice locked class skill development and fixed starting dedication 'choices'. Ohhh Man. What I really liked was arena infinite exp farm. I hate to roam 100 times to go search for that box somewhere that I could not open when I first saw it. Never again. For that you need in-game map editing and comment adding.
