Good clear commentary, plus 2D chessboard visuals, plus sporadic clips of the contenders= fantastic chess experience; yet this was the 80's, and no such experience can be witnessed even on the 2014 matches available on TH-cam.
The 80s! Weirdnhair. Electric guitars! game shows! lazer lights!... With chess???? We can sit here and complain.. Or appreciate the journey chess has taken in time. This is an amazing clip. Commentator is great.
Honestly, this commentary and instant board visuals is much better than today's programs with idiot chess wannabe champions giving us lines and variations that spoil the fun of watching two great players battle it out. Do the analysis later and let people enjoy the game especially blitz games.
People who are lower rated enjoy the line analysis because it helps to explain some of the less obvious moves. Besides, Ray Keene here is clearly not on the same level as Kasparov and Short - consistently recommending White to queenside castle into an open C file to facilitate an attack on black when Kasparov has not yet committed his king, either. Evgeny Miroshnichenko, for example, is commenting on the current FIDE world Rapid and doing a great job of actually predicting the top level play.
Totally agree the commentary had a lot to do with why I found this whole clip so enjoyable. I think 99% of us who aren't masters enjoy this style of commentary much better
A truly astounding game, chess now is nothing like chess then, I feel almost envious at the amount of fun they two seemed to be having. This match was truly inspiring.
I started watching this clip at random and thought "Kasparov will win because he is Kasparov". Never give up. Re: commentary, this is from the time when chess was shown on TV (in the UK) and Kasparov was considered a superstar.
Absolutely not. It's this kind of programming that holds chess back from becoming a world wide sport. Chess is headed in a magnificent direction for the betterment and spread of the game.
The commentator's a Grandmaster who was trying to give commentary that was geared toward a television audience, which might contain many people who are not highly familiar with chess. I should know--I have one of his books (The Simon & Schuster Book of Chess, by Grandmaster Raymond Keene). He was trying to explain what was going on at a beginner level, with the goal of making it seem exciting (hoping to increase the popularity of the sport).
You can tell Kasparov has extreme confidence, even when he speaks. Even though his English was horrible back when this was filmed, he talked as if he was fluent. Every one was scratching their heads trying to figure out what he said lol. It's a Good quality to have.
I remember this fondly. It was the first ever chess match I was even aware of - there was genuine hype I can remember the news had snippets about the match and the public really bought into it. There was an explosion of chess clubs following it. I thought Short did very well all things considered.
Great commentary. Can we have that kind of commentary back? These days commentary is messed up by showing different variations through the help of engines.
The commentary was geared towards beginners and very weak players. In that respect it was good. However, the almost complete lack of analysis of tactical variations is not very satisfactory for the more advanced player.
@neverd0wnz1 as you can read in the description the commentator is a GM, but of course you can't expect him to talk about prophylaxis, opening theory and so on to a TV audience. In fact, I think he did a good job making the game quite enjoyable and easy to follow for everyone
The commentary was so intense that the 20 minutes just seemed to fly by. why aren't there any chess matches set up like this any longer? They are so interesting!
i like this kind of style of chess matches on yt. i hate the other channels where they dont highlight raw footage of the matchbut instead all they do is explain possible moves in every situation
When you run Houdini 2 alongside this game you can see what good commentary is. Ray K OBE spots when the computer goes 0:0 or favours W after a poor opening. Thanks for posting.
9:58 "There's no computer in the world at the moment that can challenge Gary Kasparov at chess successfully." That man was obviously from the future speaking of Kasparov's 1997 game with Deep Blue.
Prior to watching this video i was watching Bart Hansen analyze a poker hand from 3/15/2021, which took place at the Hippodrome in London. I then clicked on this recommended video and see that it is being played at the Hippodrome in London. Freaky
I have a book about this game (and 5 others) from the Hippodrome, its really good! might be hard to get though nowadays. It has move by move annotation and analysis by Ray Keene.
Quem diria que os dois em parceria, apos se desligarem da FIDE, fundariam a PCA em 93, elegendo um novo campeao mundial fora da FIDE. Parabens Kaspa e Nigel
This was amazing! Kasparov at the end of the interview is referring to the position at 17:03 after a3 Qf4. Kasparov says had a win there with Bxb4 cxb4 Bxe4 Qxe4 (if Rxe4 then simply Qxe4 Qxe4 Rc1 mate) Rc1+! now, if Rxc1 it will be followed by Rxc1+ Kxc1 Qxe4 and hitting both rook on d3 and bishop on e4 so black will collect more material and soon the pawns and will convert queen against rook and a minor easily.
It is so interesting so see kasparov in this old video. Kasparov, 1987, flamant new world champion,.but still is a kid, he is not the confident man that today is Kasparov in front of the camera. I would even say that Kasparov really struggles in this tv situation. You can see in this kasparov how hurt he was after losing a winnning position. Today kasparov is a businessman, a motivator, a.speech giver, but in 1987 kasparov was a just a chess player.
I can't believe that this kind of mistake can kasparov do .....nigel won , due to the mistake of Kasparov otherwise there was huge pressure on Nigel in the early stages of the game I think Qc6 was a big very big mistake
I don't think it is easy to comment on two of world's best players game instantaneously, even if one is a GM. Also, he has to explain basic ideas behind the moves to the audience, since possibly most of them only know how the pieces move and maybe some basics of chess. I think he does pretty well.
Notice how Kasparov is sitting down and moves in with his whole body, postpones the game a few moments to adjust his pieces, leans forward and takes control physically. A lot of psychology going on initially.
What if I called football a sport where 2 teams of armored men chase an egg and try to get it to the other side? (If you're referring to REAL football, a sport where silly men chase a silly ball to kick it like horses to the other side.) Anything can be a sport my friend. Gaming is a sport now.
Kasparov says at 16:40 or he can do ...Bxb4, cxb4 bxe4,Qxe4 Rxb4+,Ka1 Rc1+, Rxc1 Qxe4, and kasparov wins the queen, and thretening the rook and the bishop and one of them will fall
Around 18:00 the commentator states that Short must not move Knight to a5 because then Kasparov would counter would Rook to b4+. However, wouldn't the white pawn just take the black rook if that happened? Am I missing something or overlooking something obvious?
When Kasparov doubles against the pawn (and queen behind it) it seems obvious that the only defender of the queen is the knight at d4. So, after Short moves Rd3 (at the time 14:20) it becomes possible to simply drive away the knight with e5 and after the knight moves, take the pawn at b4 with the bishop, since its defender on c3 is now pinned. Then, after the pawn on c3 is defended by Be1, the bishop simply retreats, to allow Kasparov to move pawn to b4 with a zillion threats against the king.
Good clear commentary, plus 2D chessboard visuals, plus sporadic clips of the contenders= fantastic chess experience; yet this was the 80's, and no such experience can be witnessed even on the 2014 matches available on TH-cam.
ikr, it's extremely aggravating.
cooldudebailey
+Nihilism LOL Good clear commentary
Still the same in 2017. Just an update :)
Nihilism enocuzqnt
Now, if I'm not mistaken, Kasparov... is assembling his pawns... yes, into a Mega Chessatron. This isn't looking good for Short.
Seems Kasparov is pissing all over the board
Kasparov: Full House
Short: Royal Flush
Mrs. Bun the Baker
Stone Cold Steve Austin
Yes
Lol
suddenly Ohio'd in 2013 💀
Wow, this commentator is amazing.
+Jas Sandhar lol one of the worst
Grandmaster Keene. He narrated The 12 Best Games of Chess
That was far more exciting than I expected.
The 80s! Weirdnhair. Electric guitars! game shows! lazer lights!... With chess???? We can sit here and complain.. Or appreciate the journey chess has taken in time. This is an amazing clip. Commentator is great.
Why the hell complain?? This is amazing!!
Amazing commentary. Nigel Short such a great player.
I love this commentator
+rexes92 8:49 10:30 10:45 and the funniest of all 18:03 And his entire analysis is almost always wrong. But he has a nice voice clearly.
I never knew chess commentary could be so entertaining!
This was very pleasant to watch, quality commentary.
Lol I love the heavy metal music and bad-ass set for a game of chess. Might as well be Wrestlemania!
Honestly, this commentary and instant board visuals is much better than today's programs with idiot chess wannabe champions giving us lines and variations that spoil the fun of watching two great players battle it out. Do the analysis later and let people enjoy the game especially blitz games.

I agree
I did enjoy the commentary indeed, not sure though which one is better at that time or nowadays..
I never thought I would get excited over a chess game; this is so EPIC!
(started to learn it couple of days ago only) :D
i started 2 months ago and IT IS epic
Whats you're rating now?
What is your rating 10 years later?
I started watching this clip at random and thought "Kasparov will win because he is Kasparov". Never give up. Re: commentary, this is from the time when chess was shown on TV (in the UK) and Kasparov was considered a superstar.
Great fightback by Nigel. Cool game.
Grandmaster Keene also narrated The 12 Best Games of Chess
Excellent end play by Short, my god. That was beautiful playing.
I like how, at about the 10:00 mark, the commentator basically predicts Kasparov's games against Deep Blue over a decade later.
Im here sitting on a bus, watching this game. What a battle, and a joy to see this
Great game. Amazing how dominate Kasparov was in the opening and then blew it all away. Also like how they tux's match the colors they're playing.
i wish chess was still covered like this :(
Absolutely not. It's this kind of programming that holds chess back from becoming a world wide sport. Chess is headed in a magnificent direction for the betterment and spread of the game.
@@MrJackOfAllTraits I found nothing wrong with the video.
What an awesome game! Thanks for sharing!

This is like chess meets Vegas.
more like blackpool
This is one of the best chess match I ever saw,
Kasparov vs Nigel,
They both has shown high tactics and strategies in chess,
Excellent.....
You can tell Kasparov has extreme confidence, even when he speaks. Even though his English was horrible back when this was filmed, he talked as if he was fluent. Every one was scratching their heads trying to figure out what he said lol. It's a Good quality to have.

@@jimkyle8008 if ur an advanced player u don't need every line to be analysed and everything to be explained to u lol 🙄
Kasparov should've made the Mega Chessatron.
João Pedro Carvalho Ah, but Short had converted his knight into a unicorn, so Kasparov had to have a full house.
Still, why he didn't slip a spy behind Short's defenses?
Good question, his thoughts may have been clouded over with the desperate need to piss all over the table.
If he did that Short would've simply used a Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Nah, the Mega Chessatron is easily defeatable with the lovely swing
27 years ago, and 40 kg ago for Nigel
That's really unfair, you *itch...and if you really must know, it's 40lbs(!) and not a gram more
@Aston Martin good one wasn't it ;-) lmao
22:00 - 22:16 watch Nigel turn and look. Garry is so cool...
besides, the speaker analyses the game very well
wait why, i loved the speaker analyses
Thrill96 what do you think i said there my friend ?
Copernicus oh sry missed your comma xD
It seems like you're saying that the game was good besides the commentary
Ebeneezer stark ikr
God!! they were so young!

Well played Nigel!
The commentary was so intense that the 20 minutes just seemed to fly by. why aren't there any chess matches set up like this any longer? They are so interesting!
In first minutes i thought i am watching a wrestling video
Thanks for this one, realy nice to see this game, nice gentleman involved there
Kasparov almost slipped on the floor.
i want more videos like this, live commentary chess games why isnt this a thing on tv like it is with poker
+Ch3zter this commentary was actually disturbing

All the commentators' expectations were wrong :p
Awesome game. Thanks for uploading. :)
I love Raymond Keene! He's a fantastic commentator.
Awesome video...wish I could find more like these.
One of the best games ever.
The commentator IS a grand master... nice to see all youtube commentators are grand masters.

‘Just take the Rook Nigel’ gave me a flashback of ‘Get in there Frank’ 😂

Kasparov nearly busted his ass @ 2:24. Also, where can I find more matches covered by this commentator? He's great.
Why there aren't awesome shows like this in 2012?
I've only played chess a few times, but I was on the edge of my seat for sure!
would be nice if today we had the opportunity to watch the current top players in a show like this...
This was a remarkable save by Short. It looked as if he was going to get crushed, but Kasparov went wrong at the end - very unusual.
20:46 Kasparov puts on his watch after resigning. He reputedly put it on when he saw that he had won.
Great game, really good commentary.
how often do you see a video that has been viewed for 14,675 times with zero dislikes? Thumbs up!
as always...thanks ChessNoir for that!
Take Care!
This was amazing! Kasparov at the end of the interview is referring to the position at 17:03 after a3 Qf4. Bxb4 is mistake. after this comes Qf6 Kf8 Nc6 Qc6 Qh8+ Ke7 and Bf6 Mate
It is so interesting so see kasparov in this old video. Kasparov, 1987, flamant new world champion,.but still is a kid, he is not the confident man that today is Kasparov in front of the camera. I would even say that Kasparov really struggles in this tv situation.

thank you for the game there need to be more chess on youtube i injoy watching it and i know there are others out there who do to
Wait... so Gary never conglomerated his pawns into a mega chessatron!!??? My life was a lie..
Nigel short is an excellent player
he sure is
I can't believe that this kind of mistake can kasparov do .....nigel won , due to the mistake of Kasparov otherwise there was huge pressure on Nigel in the early stages of the game I think Qc6 was a big very big mistake
I like the fact that white is wearing a white suit jacket, black is wearing a black one.
+The Scribe It was arranged.
And the chairs too
amazing kasparov didn't shove all the pieces off the table with that bliz move 19:10 lol
3:12
Gary: The only result when i dont complain six-love.
The interviewer: You're dic*(captions)
world is really changing... ! we can't imagine such show for game of chess in 2015.
hi, how r u??
I don't think it is easy to comment on two of world's best players game instantaneously, even if one is a GM. Also, he has to explain basic ideas behind the moves to the audience, since possibly most of them only know how the pieces move and maybe some basics of chess. I think he does pretty well.
Yes, essentially, no one alive should be able to always predict the moves of the World's best player other than that player himself.
Much better than today analysis...
Notice how Kasparov is sitting down and moves in with his whole body, postpones the game a few moments to adjust his pieces, leans forward and takes control physically. A lot of psychology going on initially.
this is absolutely fantastic
Different style of commentary for someone used to Agad and Yasser. Surprisingly good !!!
This show has the origin of Driver 2 Chicago at Night theme, Paul Phoenix theme in Tekken 3 and Tragedy from The House of The Dead arcade game.
It's amazing how many grand masters are on here
9:59 oh how the times have changed
It seems that at 14:37 e5 was possible for Black instead of g6, with the idea of B:b4 after the knight leaves d4 (where it defends the queen). Was it?
wow that was impressiv. Nigel short realy got something to be proud of now
Im stoned as fuck nd have no clue why they are taking this so seriously
because it is a championship grandmaster game ?
What if I called football a sport where 2 teams of armored men chase an egg and try to get it to the other side?

that is the best and the most bizarre game match ever!
i like old chess
All he had to do was piss on the board and it would have been a late game victory.
I could win. I was better. Typical Kasparov. Love it.
Kasparov says at 16:40 or he can do ...Bxb4, cxb4 bxe4,Qxe4 Rxb4+,Ka1 Rc1+, Rxc1 Qxe4, and kasparov wins the queen, and thretening the rook and the bishop and one of them will fall
Lore of Short Vs. Kasparov - Speed Chess Challenge Final Game momentum 100
you're welcome dude
Around 18:00 the commentator states that Short must not move Knight to a5 because then Kasparov would counter would Rook to b4+. However, wouldn't the white pawn just take the black rook if that happened? Am I missing something or overlooking something obvious?
On that note, why did the white King retreat to a1 after that move instead of Pawn on c3 taking the rook? What am I missing?
@tolerateu: The commentator is heard only by the TV audience.
When Kasparov doubles against the pawn (and queen behind it) it seems obvious that the only defender of the queen is the knight at d4. Kasparov's slip down the stairs cost him the game
awesome! thx for sharing
This is all very well, but can either of them tune a pair of Weber 32/34's. I think we should be told.
this is where Nigel and Kasparov were young?
The intro is the chicago backing track from driver 2!!
Loved Garrys little arm flail dance at the bottom of the stairs lol!
