Absolutely! And it's so re-watchable. I remember having this read to me in the 5th grade and saw the movie not long after, and the idea of being trapped in a painting has stuck with me, even 32 years later.

Sometimes movie magic is dark magic...
Don't want to be one of those 80's kids who are enmeshed in nostalgia, but... you're dead on about how kids movies used to be "dark" back then... or at least had lots of things that would be inconceivable to out into a kids movie today. Just like with the original Grimm's fairy tales, I think kids were better off when they were exposed to some scary and/or difficult things in their entertainment. Studio Ghibli possibly the only purveyor of children's entertainment that still "gets" that concept.

I remember suggesting this movie for Seen It back in one of the first couple seasons. Ended up watching it for the first time myself while waiting for it to appear on the show. And I have to agree more with Matt...as much as I love love love the book, it's clear that the conflict between the director and studio negatively affected the movie.
This show is always funny but, you guys were fantastic this episode.

I love so many classic Tom Hanks movies, Apollo 13 (still gets me at the end), Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, Etc. But if I ever meet Hanks, the first thing we’re talking about Is Bachelor Party.

Great ep as always guys. Love Giancarlo Esposito! He's a great actor. Great pronunciation Matt. Esposito is a very common surname in Naples, so I wasn't surprised that his dad was from Naples. I don't share the same surname, but my family is from Naples, and my brothers and I swear that Giancarlo Esposito kinda looks like my Dad and Grandad. We are all sure we have a common ancestor, haha.
I made eye contact with Giancarlo Esposito at Comic Con once and it was awesome

This movie absolutely traumatized me growing up. I wound up watching the back half from behind the couch so I could duck behind it and hide. Carousels gave me the creeps for a long time afterward.
Thank you for reviewing this movie! I just remember watching it once as a kid but it left such an impression on me.
Absolutely loved that movie growing up, to this day still a favorite, watch it every Halloween season or fall perfect for the season when the leaves turn, turned my three sons into fans as well, keep up the great work and love the show
I saw this movie in the 1980s and loved it
I was just thinking the same thing with the new Dune movie coming out. I've always thought that Baron Harkonnen's name was pronounced "HAR-CONE-EN", but while listening to Frank Herbert read an excerpt from his first book I heard him pronounce it "HAR-KUN-NUN". As Craig said, it's one of those things where if you say it right, it sounds like you're saying it wrong. To me, "HAR-CONE-EN" just sounds way better. Anyways... Thoughts on Dune?

I know you won't because a) the month has probably already been prerecorded by this point and b) it's an animated mini series not a movie but you guys should watch Over the Garden Wall for an October video, it's one of my favourite things to watch around Halloween, I watch it every year.

I'm a big fan of the original book, and I agree with most of your thoughts on the film version. Ray Bradbury had such a unique and creepy way of describing things that I don't think the movie could ever live up to my expectations, but it was a pretty good effort.
Watching this as an adult now:

We always lived 10 to 15 miles outside of the many towns growing up in the 80s and never had cable, UHF late night was the equivalent, sometimes got lucky and they showed unrated foreign films like (Tombs of the Blind Dead).
As an Italian i can confirm the correct pronunciation but it's weird i too got used to calling him the "american way". Also Esposito is actually quite a common surname in Italy

There’s a scene that they didn’t show right after Mr. Dark catches the boy. The midget is just randomly holding one of the boy’s hands while they walk down the street. He’s there for one clip and then gone again. Our whole class cracked up at that because of the odd camera reveal they chose.

We watched “Johnny Got His Gun” in college in the ‘80s. Probably after seeing that Metallica video. I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a more depressing movie. Jason Robards always good though.

OK listen.... you guys just reviewed a Jack Clayton film and it's Halloween. For the love of god, watch Clayton's The Innocents. It is by far the greatest horror film ever made.
Yet another case of studio interference. Sigh. It's a pretty dark movie. I'd like to see the intended version.
