Over the years I’ve wished I did this a bit better. I’ve also read comments with some better suggestions too. The video is still good. I think for smaller chips, this works. Saw dust with wood glue could work too. Wood filler can be too brittle with large chips. Glad this has worked out for you all these years. Got any suggestions for future videos?
to all germans: i didnt find Wood filler in my local hardware store so i bought a 500g Box of "Molto Holz Reparatur Spachtel" for about 5€ and it works perfectly well.
True. Sometimes it's not a big deal, but not everyone lives in the USA where decks are cheap. Most places, outside the US, decks start at over $80. A lot of people want to make their decks last as long as possible. A friend of mine who is a pro vert skater was so picky about shapes. When he found one that flipped good he actually busted the nose one day and asked me if I could repair it. He could get free decks anytime, but this deck shape felt good. So, repairs are work for a lot of people.
That works too. There are always multiple ways to do things. This method does not work on big chips for the reasons you mentioned. Out method works for small chips on the top surface.
I love your enthusiasm, and you are right about glue and saw dust. Unfortunately, most people don't have wood glue sitting around, so they'll need to go buy it. They probably don't have saw dust that has been carefully placed in a jar that is now sitting on a shelf above the toilet. That's where I keep my saw dust preserves. They will need to saw something like a chair leg. So, buying wood glue and making saw dust versus just buying wood filler and a putty knife... wood filler wins. Sorry.
If you have a longboard that has cut-outs for the wheels that has plywood that has chipped out completely, it might just be more economical to screw in a new piece of wood and add a plastic guard over it. In all of my custom deck's I dip the tips into colored silicone in order to prevent further chipping, also it looks really cool.
Of course it's only a temporary fix. All this is doing is extending the life of the deck. It's going to make it new again. Thanks you for the suggestion. I'll add to the description.
We have a video for this exact thing that has not been released yet. It will be out next week. In short, take the chunk out or any wood that has got between the plies. With a flat screw diver pry open the plies and squirt in wood glue between the plies. Clamp the plies and let them dry over night. Then sand the edge of the deck and reshape nose or tail with sand paper. Did the plies actually split in the center/middle of the deck?
Also there is a little trick, that old time woodworkers use. Instead of using "Wood Filler" you can mix some saw dust, and glue. You will get almost the same result. =)
Yeah it works great too. Skaters aren't wood workers, so they'd have to get a saw and some wood, make saw dust, and go get wood glue. Since they need to get wood glue, it might be a lot easier to just get wood filler. That's why.
Thanks to Rat Vision videos and the brilliant guidance and experienced knowledge plus sage-worthy wisdom! I am really impress - I haven't skate since '94 and I am relieved to watch your excellent videos before buying any equipment. Plenty to learn...Cheers..
Thanks dude! These videos are helping me ALOT! Im completely revamping my longboard and turning it into a bottleneck cruiser, painting it, getting new grip tape and adding under glow! :D
I'm sure there are videos for this already. Undo the bolt and take out the bearing in a similar way that we show in our Remove Bearings From A Wheel video . Watch out for the plastic/metal spacer inside.
Dude. I got into an argument yesterday with some fools. They never heard of repairing a chipped deck before. I'm so glad I found this vid you made 11 years ago!! 🤣 You helped me blow their minds! Skate or Die bro. 🤟🏼
@@jay_maybe wow that person must now think that tp will save them from corona lol yes I am here in 2020 but helpful videos are helpful videos, the think is that person deleted his replies lol
Yes, it can. This is not for big chips. This is really for chips that happen on the top ply that are a result from razor tail (as seen in the video). We have another video for fixing razor tail and delamination.
Bought a board the other day that needs a repair, this video was perfect! Very clean tutorial, short to the point, funny!! And very informative! Thanks bro!!
Sorry for the late reply. Most of you r answers are in the video. The time it takes for the putty to dry is written on the container. Usually 24 hours. Do it won't effect the way you skate. And you can reshape the tail so it isn't square. Go over the grip tape for a couple minutes or when it becomes hard to peel off.
Very professional video with some quirky comments. Went straight to the point with tips, and dos and don'ts. Quality video, that explains what to do and what to get. The guy has a likeable personality and keeps your attention. Subscribed
You can try to peel back just the problem area. As long as the grip is still sticky and you can totally avoid getting any dust on it you may be able to stick it back on. Most likely it won't.
GNasty the day I got my longboard I was going down a hill and needed to get off quickly because of a stupid car . So I hopped off after stopping with my foot and my deck decoded to go under a Fiat and get stuck. Resulted in a chip
Oh man, you fell for the classic sales trick. That's $20, plus tax for some states and shipping. Also, I would say "nope" to that, too. That's going to be the shittiest wood and lamination process they can use. It's going to fall apart faster than the repair job in this video. Also, he did the repair for $10, so still less than half the cost of buying that deck.
***** I got that deck for 23 dollars shipped to my door its hard maple and skates well I bet it hold up alot better than wood filler foh I didnt fall for shit 13 dollars more I got a brand new deck and they threw in grip you keep trying tho

We accidently posted it. It wasn't supposed to go public yet. We keep saying we are going to post our new videos but we've been having issues with our new site. It will be posted in the next day or two, FOR SURE this time!
Don't forget the difference between silicon carbide and aluminum oxide grit. Which one is better. Do you think any pro knows the difference, or do they just ride the grip tape from the brand who pays the most money?
The spot where you put it might have been dirty/dusty. It needs to be clean. It can also break off if the chip area is big or if the wood filler has too much pressure applied to it. Check out our other video on delamination and razor tail. That might help you more.
Why didn't I think of that? Duh! Actually the point I was illustrating was that although the idea of a pointed tube is a nice idea, it doesn't help to get the wood filler between the plies no matter how much you cut off.
i started out with a 7.5, it made landing tricks harder so i got an 8.0, it feels big at first but once you get use to it, it makes landing tricks easier
his tips on gripping a board are fantastic for skateboarders. If you don't "go to town" one some gnarly 24 grit vicious or gator, cutting it will be among the hardest thing you have ever done. Longboarders will know what I mean.
This is an amazing tutorial! It really helped me out its a 2 in 1. A tutorial for fixing chips in your deck also a tutorial to apply some griptape onto your deck i highly recommend this video.

How big was your chip? Did it chip in the same spot or in another place? This is not a solution for any size chip. If the tail or nose is still weak, meaning that it can still move or flex then all the wood filler will break off. The reason is that there is nothing for the wood filler to hold onto for structural support.
It depends on if the deck flexes or not. Yes it will work. Wait until later today or tomorrow to do the repair. We have another video that will be released that may fix your problem better than this. It's like a "pre-quel" to this video.
You could use the old griptape that you removed as a sander. And if I have a chip on my nose that the 2 top plys came up could i just squeeze the wood glue thing into the open area of the plys where it came up and then clamp it down? Without taking off the grip.
It depends on the chip. Usually a chip happens from razor tail, and once you get a chip it can get worse and worse. This isn't for everyone or every situation. If you don't feel you need to fix a chip than this isn't for you.
I came back 8 years later to this video specifically to make sure I was doing this right. Thanks for many fixed boards.

can you also use your old grip tape for sand paperO___o

why not just cut the tube nozzle of the wood filler so its wider and easier to squeeze?
but like it does bc ive done it before....
The Potato King LMAO oh my god. dude you just take some scissors and cut the plastic yo. i mean it takes some effort but its not impossible
The Potato King of course it would, with a wider hole there's less resistance so it's relatively easier to squeeze the filler out

It's off with the griptape or having a chipped deck
It's off with the griptape or having a chipped deck
No you just have to peel it back with a hair drier and make sure nothing gets on it then re stick it with a hair drier
How long did you have the deck? Did you get it wet or leave it in a hot car for a few days?
The grip God says to score it more.

No, thank you for helping me refurbish a few boards. I didn't have to spend big bucks on a deck.
great vid, but what the fuck is that camera angle.

it most likely is. We have new videos hopefully posting today. One is about razor tail and chips. It's like a pre-quel to this video.

Decks do wear down naturally from doing trick, but much faster from stopping with the tail. Avoid any unnecessary sliding on the tail.

Every deck has plies/layers. The plies are veneers (technically speaking). We are posting a video on how to fix this within the next few days.
Grip tape setups are always so satisfying....🤩
How big was your chip? Did it chip in the same spot or in another place? This is not a solution for any size chip. If the tail or nose is still weak, meaning that it can still move or flex then all the wood filler will break off. The reason is that there is nothing for the wood filler to hold onto for structural support.
We are aware of that. Thank you.
