Chips Moman the producer always got artists to sing 'This Time' when they came in as a sound check (he wrote it) so Elvis started it then went into can't stop loving you, which is completely different to his live versions.

Perfect example of Elvis’ country side. “I can’t stop loving you” was a big Country hit for Don Gibson in 1958. “This Time” was a hit Country/Rockabilly hit for Troy Shondell around that time. Don Gibson was a huge star, and had many big hits. Troy Shondell was really a one-hit wonder. Elvis went on to sing “I can’t Stop Loving You” Live thousands of times. It was a fan favorite. You should really listen to the Don Gibson version. Knowing the popular hits, and seeing how Elvis changed them to his style is always interesting and it is how everyone else heard them initially back then.

Thing is...... Elvis first found his style by jamming and screwing around in Sun Studio. I believe he spent quite a bit of studio time ever after doing that just looking for the next spark. He always said he thought it was more about how the music felt than how technically perfect it was.

Video taping back then isn't like it is today. It was extremely expensive and took a lot of time to set up. Even audio tape (professional quality, at least) was so expensive they used to tape over sessions not used for commercial release in many instances. It's actually a miracle we have what we have (this is why we don't have outtakes of hits like "Hound Dog").

This was not a home recording, Seph, just FYI 😀
I'm just gonna jump right in here.
    Everybody ready? Okay.
"It's My Way (Of Loving You)/ This Time/ I Can't Stop Loving You" has more than one composer & lyricist listed under the official recording listing on an Elvis website.
However I know for a fact that Don Gibson was the solo composer & lyricist of "I Can't Stop Loving You" (some think that Ray Charles wrote it, he did not. He won a Grammy for his recorded version of the song in 1963, but again he did not write the song. Don Gibson did in December of 1957. More on that later though).
Okay so the list of composer & lyricists listed are:
    - Chip Moman
    - Don Gibson
    - Webb Pierce
    - Wayne Walker
"It's My Way (Of Loving You)/ This Time/ I Can't Stop Loving You" was recorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis, Tennessee on February 17, 1969 between the hours of 8:00 p.m.- 11:00 p.m.
    Take 1: Master 3:51 (jam)
    Musicians:
    Guitar: Elvis Presley
    Guitar: Reggie Young
    Organ: Bobby Emmons
    Bass: Tommy Cogbill
    Piano: Bobby Wood
    Harmonica: Ed Knollis
    Drums/ Tambourine: Gene Chrisman
    Song info:
"I Can't Stop Loving You" is a popular song written and composed by country singer, songwriter, and musician Don Gibson, who first recorded it on December 3, 1957, for RCA Victor Records. It was released in 1958 as the B-side of "Oh, Lonesome Me", becoming a double-sided country hit single. At the time of Gibson's death in 2003, the song had been recorded by more than 700 artists, most notably by Ray Charles, whose recording reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart.
Gibson wrote both "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Oh, Lonesome Me" on June 7, 1957, in Knoxville, Tennessee. "I sat down to write a lost love ballad," Gibson said in Dorothy Horstman's 1975 book Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy. "After writing several lines to the song, I looked back and saw the line 'I can't stop loving you.' I said, 'That would be a good title,' so I went ahead and rewrote it in its present form."
Note: This original recording was released as "I Can't Stop Lovin' You".
For anyone interested (and that included you, Seph) here is a link to Don Gibson performing "I Can't Stop Loving You" live on television in 1963: m.th-cam.com/video/BZbNgD2aKqc/w-d-xo.html
And that is all for now Seph & everyone!
    LOVED your reaction Seph!

HeavenlyPresley-Tonya has a 4K edit of that live filmed performance on her channel. Again just FYI 😉

There are TWO great live versions:
    (1) the "water throwing incident" from 1972 Hampton Roads, Virginia when at the very, very start of the video Elvis called out “Please Release Me” but the band began playing “I Can’t Stop Loving You” - he didn’t stop them, he went right into the song, he then walked over to his glass of water, picked it up & playfully threw it at Glen @ piano -- a real fun, energetic, powerhouse th-cam.com/video/LNtP5Gd8QGE/w-d-xo.html, Elvis' voice rich & powerful, & full of fun -- but you must make sure to hear him say Please Release Me @ extreme beginning so the water incident will make sense; also note his little irritated look @ beginning
    (2) Vegas '70 at th-cam.com/video/iexL2oOxZu8/w-d-xo.html -- great
